Purpose: The aim on this study was to establish the validity, reliability and efficiency of a Pain Self-Report Scale for elderly with dementia and compare these results with an observational pain rating scale. Methods: Study subjects were 136 elderly with dementia who were residents in a nursing home, geriatric hospital, or day care center. The subject's pain was measured by five self-report scales and observational scale. DS-DAT (discomfort scale-dementia of the Alzheimer's type) was used for pain behavior observational measure. Cognitive state was assessed using the MMSE (Mini-Mental State Examination). Results: Observational rating correlated moderately with self-report (r=.225~.585, p<.05) and tended to underestimate pain intensity. Test-retest reliability was high for all five self-report scales, and the correlation between these scales was very strong (r=.735~.856, p<.05). Comprehension rate of VDS (verbal descriptor scale) was 88.3%, and NRS (numeric rating scale) 69.9%, FPS (face pain scale) 66.9%, HVAS (horizontal visual analog scale) and VVAS (vertical visual analog scale) 65.4%. Conclusion: Nurses should not apply observational scales routinely in demented patients as many of these are capable of reporting their own pain. Self-report, the highest standard of pain measurement can be reliably performed in a large proportion of demented elderly.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parental attribution and self-perception in parenting roles according to parenting success or failure situations. A total of 138 mothers who have toddlers in Seoul and other big cities in Korea completed questionnaires, and data were analyzed by paired t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, Fisher's Z score, and multi-regression. The results are as follows: First, mothers in parenting success situations showed higher parental attribution than mothers in parenting failure situations. Second, correlations between parental attribution and self-perception in parenting roles turned out to be significantly different between parenting success situations and failure situations. Third, both internal attribution such as ability and effort, and external attribution such as child behavior and task difficulty, significantly predicted self-perception in parenting roles including equilibrium feeling, competence, satisfaction and parenting investment, especially in parenting failure situations. The implications of the difference in parental attribution between parenting success and failure situations have been discussed.
The purpose of this study was to determine the association between drinking behaviors and the need for periodontal treatment. The data of 5,995 adults from the 2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were categorized into young adulthood (19~39 years), middle age (40~64 years), and old age (${\geq}65$ years) and analyzed. Chi-square test was performed to determine those who needed periodontal treatment by the respondents' general characteristics and drinking behaviors, and logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine the impact of each drinking behavior on the need for periodontal treatment. The results of this study have confirmed that alcohol intake is a factor adversely affecting periodontal status; therefore, patients should know the fact that excessive alcohol intake and increased frequency of drinking may affect the prevalence rate of periodontal diseases. Moreover, moderate-drinking programs that can reinforce prevention of drinking so that dental hygienists can provide good oral health care should be developed. A systematic oral health promotion program should be introduced for constant prevention with the objective of activating oral health education that focused on middle-aged and young-adult people in pursuit of healthy aging society.
The purpose of this study were to examine if the buyers of counterfeits tend to care less about ethical beliefs than non-buyers among Korean, Japanese, and Hong Kong consumers, and if they have more supportive attitudes toward counterfeit products. 573 female college students living in Seoul, Tokyo, and Hong Kong were surveyed. For data analysis, descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and t-test were used. As the results, 65.8% of respondents had experiences of purchasing fashion counterfeits. Handbags among fashion counterfeits were the most frequently purchased by the respondents. The buyers of counterfeits tended to purchase counterfeit goods as more alternative of genuine products than non-buyers, and did not feel guiltier toward purchasing of counterfeits than non-buyers. Also, the buyers of counterfeits tended to have more positive attitudes toward the legality of manufacturing, selling, and buying of counterfeits than non-buyers. In addition, they tended to consider much more purchasing of counterfeits as a way to fight against big-firms than non-buyers. Finally, the buyers of counterfeits tended to have lower consumer ethics than non-buyers. Based on these results, global marketing strategies for fashion goods were suggested.
Objectives: This study was conducted to improve dental health regarding behavior and understanding of dental health of day care teachers by analyzing actual dental health state. Methods: This study was performed from October 1 to October 30, 2008 for 194 teachers who worked at nurseries in Daegu. Results: In the toothbrushing recognition, 42.3% of the said that tooth brushing after eating is necessary but only 26.3% had the children bush teeth. They did not have the children brush the teeth because they did not have enough time. Many teachers (75.3%) said that dental caries could be prevented. But only 4.1% of them said that fluorine is effective for the prevention of dental caries. The preschool teachers had dental health education experience, better understood the importance of dental health education than those who did not have(p < 0.05). Conclusion: The preschool teachers who had dental health education better recognized the importance of dental health education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate bone mineral density (BMD) and risk factors related to osteopenia in community people. Methods: The subjects consisted of 145 community people. The variables of osteoporosis knowledge and preventive health promoting behavior were measured using questionnaires. BMD and BMI (body mass index) were measured. Dietary nutrients intake related to osteoporosis was measured using 24hours recall. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS 18.0 program, using mean, standard deviation, ${\chi}^2-test$, t-test, and logistic regression. Results: Eighty six people (59.3%) had an osteopenia. According to normal group and osteopenia group, there was significant difference in gender (${\chi}^2=6.72$, p=.010) and smoking (${\chi}^2=5.18$, p=.023). Predictors of osteopenia group were male (OR=2.65, CI=1.03-8.98), BMI(OR=0.86, CI=0.72-0.96). Conclusion: Health care providers must consider factors that affect osteopenia such as gender, BMI. These results suggest the need to instruct nursing activities and interventions which are beneficial for prevention of osteoporosis.
Objective: This study aimed to examine the difference in toddlers' accumulated cortisol levels based on childcare experience in toddlerhood and the relationship between temperament and accumulated cortisol levels. Methods: Hair sample were collected for measure accumulated cortisol level in 87 toddlers. The Early Childhood Behavior Questionnaire (ECBQ) was used to measure temperament. Results: First, toddlers in childcare showed higher accumulated cortisol levels than in-home toddlers. Second, toddlers in childcare, exhibited a significant correlation between accumulated cortisol levels and surgency. Third, the accumulated cortisol levels of in-home toddlers exhibited a significant correlation with negative affect. In this research, there was significant range in the accumulated cortisol level according to childcare use, and the factors related to accumulated cortisol levels were different in each context. Conclusion: The results of this research support the "susceptibility to context of HPA axis" and imply a needed discussion about the effect of childcare experiences in toddlerhood.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between emotional intelligence and stress coping of nurses in hospitals. Method: The study was a descriptive-correlational study with a convenience sample of 298 nurses. Descriptive statistics t-test, Mann-Whitney U, One-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficients were used for data analysis. Results: The results of this study were as follows; Emotional intelligence was higher in married nurses than unmarried nurses (t=-2.90, p=.004). Nurses with a clinical career of 4~7 years had better stress coping than nurses with shorter careers (F=5.60, p=.004). Ward nurses better stress coping than nurses in emergency rooms and Intensive care units (F=4.43, p=.013). Fixed shift nurses had better stress coping than nurses on rotation shifts (t=-2.37, p=.019). There was a significant positive correlation between emotional intelligence and stress coping(r=.29, p<.001). Conclusion: The results indicate that stress coping is better in nurses with higher emotional intelligence, 4~7 year clinical experience, working on ward a as well as having a fixed shift. However further development and application of programs which can improve nurses' emotional intelligence are needed.
Although there are many different ways that restorations can be made, it can be said that the biocompatibility of abutment and crown is very important in this experiment. When placed in the actual oral cavity, the differences were obvious. Compared to In-ceram Aluminium, the structure that is obtained after firing reveals a particularly homogeneous distribution of the crystal and glass phase. The In-ceram aluminium system had many problems, such as having weak tensile strength, and having low bonding strength due to the shrinking that occurs after firing. Because of the opaque finish of the metal frame, the two may look similar from the outside, but it is evident that there are differences between using a metal frame and In-ceram. VITA VM9 has been designed as a special ceramic featuring a fine structure or stabilized Zro2 substructures, and so the VITA VM9 excels in its light refraction and reflection behavior, which is similar to natural teeth. It also has outstanding chemical balance, which presents advantages such as considerably reduced accumulation of plaque on the ceramic surface.? This ultimately results in easier care and cleaning for the patient.
Objectives: A healthy campus enables students to pursue their academic goals. This study examines the health in a broad spectrum of university students and suggests a systematic approach to building a healthy university campus. Methods: The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1998-2009) results and the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (2000-2011) report were used as bases for this study. Results: The most common health problems were allergies, sinusitis, ear infections, anemia, depression, and stress among both American students and Korean young people in the 19-29 age group. American students were more likely to be overweight, while Korean young people were to become underweight. College students were also less likely to practice healthy behavior(i.e. vaccinations, physical activity, and not smoking). To build a healthy university campus, six areas of health services are suggested: medical care, health education, counseling, immunization, heath promotion, and employee assistance programs (EAP). In addition, universities should develop effective strategies to improve health on campus, such as community partnerships. Conclusions: To make the most of the limited resources requires a systematic approach that focuses on continuous monitoring of health on campus, health surveys, and collaboration between universities and their communities.
