  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop and assess the feasibility and effectiveness of digital therapeutics for supportive care after gastrectomy. Materials and Method: The study included 39 patients with gastric cancer who underwent minimally invasive gastrectomy and were able to use a mobile application (app) on their smartphones. The developed research app automatically calculates and provides daily targets for calorie and protein intake based on the patient's body mass index (BMI). Patients recorded their daily diets, weights, and symptoms in the app and completed special questionnaires to assess the feasibility of the app in real-world clinical practice. Results: At the 10-week follow-up, the mean questionnaire scores for ease of learning, usability, and effectiveness of the app (primary endpoint) were 2.32±0.41, 2.35±0.43, and 2.4±0.39 (range: 0-3), respectively. Patients were classified as underweight (<18.5, n=4), normal (18.5-24.9, n=24), or overweight (≥25.0, n=11) according to predischarge BMI. Underweight patients showed higher compliance with app usage and a higher rate of achieving the target calorie and protein intake than normal weight and overweight patients (98% vs. 77% vs. 81%, p=0.0313; 102% vs. 75% vs. 61%, P=0.0111; 106% vs. 79% vs. 64%, P=0.0429). Two patients transitioned from underweight to normal weight (50.0%), one patient (4.3%) transitioned from normal weight to underweight, and two patients (22.2%) transitioned from overweight to normal weight. Conclusions: The mobile app is feasible and useful for postoperative supportive care in terms of ease of learning, usability, and effectiveness. Digital therapeutics may be an effective way to provide supportive care for postgastrectomy patients, particularly in terms of nutrition.

  • Children need oral care according to their developmental stage and accordingly, the appropriate dental treatment is different, which requires parents to have an active attitude and the applicable oral knowledge. As there is so much unreliable oral care information and PR, it is hard to find accurate information and parents are in need of a preventative oral healthcare mobile application for healthy oral care. Also, pediatric adolescent care should be focused on prevention rather than treatment and children should be instructed and educated to eat cariogenic foods as little as possible as well as told to brush before going to bed. This study designed a smart application for oral health care education to provide information and knowledge regarding oral health care for infants, oral health education, and oral health care prevention for parents of young children.

  • Purpose An increase in the number of fitness apps across the world is a testament to the growing interest in health. As focus on medical services shifted from treatment to prevention, this type of app plays an essential role in promoting one's health and exercise management. Yet little has been known about practical effects of fitness apps in existing literature thus this study searches for factors that affect daily use of fitness apps and examine the relationship between app usage and exercise patterns. Design/methodology/approach This study surveyed people who used Cashwalk, the pedometer app for a minimum of a week to analyze reasons why they used the app. Particpants' exercise patterns were also recorded. By examining survey results of fitness app users and developing a research model based on the Customer Value Theory, this study provides real-life factors to the fitness and smart health care industry that will adopt a proactive lifestyle pattern. Findings Empirical analysis proved properties such as the complexity of fitness apps, monetary rewards, exercise monitoring and the enjoyment of using fitness apps contribute to using fitness apps on a daily basis. Furthermore, more daily use of fitness apps was shown to have a greater impact on exercise. This study also confirmed that social comparison does not affect the daily use of fitness apps and the amount of exercise, and the habitual walking was proved to directly affect the amount of exercise.

  • Background and Objectives: Self-monitoring of blood pressure (SMBP) is a reliable method used to assess BP accurately. However, patients do not often know how to respond to the measured BP value. We developed a mobile application-based feed-back algorithm (SMBP-App) for tailored recommendations. In this study, we aim to evaluate whether SMBP-App is superior to SMBP alone in terms of BP reduction and drug adherence improvement in patients with hypertension. Methods: Self-Monitoring of blood pressure and Feed-back using APP in Treatment of UnconTrolled Hypertension (SMART-BP) is a prospective, randomized, open-label, multicenter trial to evaluate the efficacy of SMBP-App compared with SMBP alone. Patients with uncomplicated essential hypertension will be randomly assigned to the SMBP-App (90 patients) and SMBP alone (90 patients) groups. In the SMBP group, the patients will perform home BP measurement and receive the standard care, whereas in the SMBP-App group, the patients will receive additional recommendations from the application in response to the obtained BP value. Follow-up visits will be scheduled at 12 and 24 weeks after randomization. The primary endpoint of the study is the mean home systolic BP. The secondary endpoints include the drug adherence, the home diastolic BP, home and office BP. Conclusions: SMART-BP is a prospective, randomized, open-label, multicenter trial to evaluate the efficacy of SMBP-App. If we can confirm its efficacy, SMBP-App may be scaled-up to improve the treatment of hypertension.
