Isotropic pitch based carbon fibers were exposed to isothermal oxidation in carbon dioxide gas to study the activation kinetics under the temperature of 800~$1100^{\circ}C$. The kinetic equation $f=1-{\exp}(-at^b)$ was introduced and the constant b was obtained in the range of 0.92~1.25. It was shown that the activated carbon fiber shows the highly specific surface area (SSA) when the constant b comes close to 1. The activation kinetics were evaluated by the reaction-controlling regime (RCR) according to changes of the apparent activation energy with changes of the conversion. It was observed that the activation energies increase from 47.6 to 51.2 kcal/mole with the conversion increasing from 0.2 to 0.8. It was found that the pores of the activated carbon fiber under the chemical reaction were developed well through the fiber.

In this study, waste carbon fiber obtained by pyrolysis of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) was used to produce carbon fluoride through vapor phase fluorination and recycled as a reducing electrode material for lithium primary batteries. First, the physicochemical properties of the waste carbon fiber obtained by pyrolysis were determined, and the structural and chemical properties of carbon fluoride were analyzed to evaluate the effect of vapor phase fluorination on the waste carbon fiber. XRD analysis confirmed that the hexagonal network carbon laminated structure (002 peak) of the waste carbon fiber was gradually converted into a carbon fluoride structure (CFX, 001 peak) as the temperature of gas phase fluorination increased. The discharge capacity of the lithium primary battery produced using this carbon fluoride was up to 862 mAh/g. This was compared to the discharge capacity of carbon fluoride-based Li-ion batteries made of other carbon materials. These results suggest that carbon fluoride made from waste CFRP-based carbon fibers can be used as a reducing electrode material for Li-ion batteries.

Recently, the applications of carbon fiber have been broader than ever when it comes to such industrials as automobiles, ships, aerospace, civil engineering and architecture because of their lightweight-ness and high mechanical properties. This study analyzed mechanical properties and flexural behavior of carbon fiber reinforced cement composites(CFRC) with different fiber contents and fiber lengths, and also impact resistance by natural drop test on mortar specimens was compared and examined. In addition, contents of carbon fiber(CF) were varied by 0.5%, 1.0%, 2.0% and 3.0%. Fiber lengths was used for 6 mm and 12 mm, respectively. As a result of the test, the flow value was very disadvantageous in terms of fluidity due to the carbon fiber ball phenomenon, and the unit weight was slightly reduced. In particular, the compressive strength was decreased with increasing carbon fiber contents. On the other hand, the flexural strength was the highest with 12 mm fiber length and 2% fiber content. As the results of the impact resistance test, the specimens of plain mortar takes about 2~3 times to final fracture, while the specimens of CFRC is somewhat different depending on the increase of the fiber contents. However, when the fiber length is 12 mm and the fiber content is 2%, the impact resistance was the highest.

This paper presents the results of fire resistance properties of high performance concrete varying with fiber kinds and the size of metal lath in order to verify the validities of fiber on the spatting resistance by fire. Metal lath, glass fiber and carbon fiber are used to confine the concrete. According to test results, plain concrete without lateral confinement and confined concrete with glass fiber and carbon fiber show entire failure after exposed to fire, while confined concrete with metal lath take place in the form of slight surface spatting by fire, which has favorable spatting resistance of concrete. As for the effect of the size of metal lath, when the size of metal lath is more than 1.2mm of thickness, the residual strength of concrete exposed to fire maintains more than 80% of its original strength. However, glass fiber and carbon fiber does not perform desirable spatting resistance by fire due to loss of lateral confinement of fiber exposed to fire caused by melting of fiber and reducing bond strength between concrete and fiber.

Nondestructive damage sensing and mechanical properties for acid-treated carbon nanotube (CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical technique and acoustic emission (AE). Carbon black (CB) was used to compare to CNT and CNF. The results were compared to the untreated case. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) relating to electrical resistivity under double-matrix composites test. Sensing for fiber tension was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic strain. The sensitivity for fiber damage such as fiber fracture and fiber tension was the highest for CNT/epoxy composites. Reinforcing effect of CNT obtained from apparent modulus measurement was the highest in the same content. For surface treatment case, the damage sensitivity and reinforcing effect were higher than those of the untreated case. The results obtained from sensing fiber damage were correlated with the morphological observation of nano-scale structure using FE-SEM. The information on fiber damage and matrix deformation and reinforcing effect of carbon nanocomposites could be obtained from electrical resistivity measurement as a new concept of nondestructive evaluation.

Electro-micromechanical techniques were applied using four-probe method for carbon nanotube (CNT) or nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their content. Carbon black (CB) was used to compare with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) relating to electrical resistivity for double-matrix composites test. Sensing for fiber tension was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic strain. The sensitivity for fiber damage such as fiber fracture and fiber tension was the highest for CNT/epoxy composites, and in CB case they were the lowest compared with CNT and CNF. Reinforcing effect of CNT obtained from apparent modulus measurement was the highest in the same content.
This study was to correctly estimate the friction and wear behavior of carbon fiber and PEEK sheet composites, and the validity of using them as alternatives to the metal-based materials used for artificial hip joints. Moreover, this work evaluated the friction coefficient according to the fiber ply orientation, along with the fractured surfaces of the carbon/PEEK composites. The unidirectional composites had higher friction coefficients than those multidirectional composites. This was caused by the debonding between the carbon fiber and the PEEK sheet, which was proportional to the contact area between the sliding surface and the carbon fiber. The friction test results showed that there was no significant differences in relation to the fiber ply orientation. However, in a case where the speed was 2.5 m/s, the friction coefficient was relatively large for configuration I. The friction surface of the specimen was analyzed using an electron microscope. In all cases, the debonding of the fiber and PEEK could be confirmed.
The interfacial properties in carbon fiber composites, which control the overall mechanical properties of the composites, are very important. Effective interface enhancement work is conducted on the modification of the carbon fiber surface with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Nonetheless, most surface modifications methods do have their own drawbacks such as high temperatures with a range of 600~1000℃, which should be implemented for CNT growth on carbon fibers that can cause carbon fiber damages affecting deterioration of composites properties. This study includes the use of in-situ interfacial polymerization of polyamide 610/CNT to fabricate the carbon fiber composites. The process is very fast and continuous and can disperse CNTs with random orientation in the interface resulting in enhanced interfacial properties. Scanning electron microscopy was conducted to investigate the CNT dispersion and composites morphology, and the thermal stability of the composites was analyzed via thermogravimetric analysis. In addition, fiber pull-out tests were used to assess interfacial strength between fiber and matrix.
Carbon materials are widely used in many areas of our lives. A fiber having a carbon content of 90% or more obtained by heating an organic fiber precursor is referred to as a "carbon fiber". Carbon fibers are currently used in the medical market to manufacture radiation transmission device parts, artificial joints, and medical aids, as many developments have been made to utilize carbon fibers' characteristics such as light weight, radiation permeability, biocompatibility, high strength, high heat resistance, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity. In order to maintain body temperature and increase immunity in long-lasting nuclear medical examination and treatment through the idea of convergence of carbon materials and radiation technology, the quality of medical services can be improved by utilizing carbon materials. We should be aware of the domestic carbon-based medical device industry and make efforts to contribute to the development of medical devices. As a radiation expert, we should try to use our skills and experience to find items that can be fused with medical devices to develop various nuclear medical examination fields and radiographic examination fields that can be widely applied. We should actively engage in future technology development and carbon material research to strengthen the global competitiveness of the domestic medical device industry and improve the quality of medical services.

This paper is a fundamental study on the mechanical properties of the high performance concrete confined with metal lath, glass and carbon fiber laterally. According to the results, it shows that the compressive strength increases by 9%, 8% and 6% in metal lath carbon fiber and glass fiber in case of W/B 30% respectively. In case of W/B 30% and 40%, flecxural strength shows largely in order of carbon fiber, metal lath, glass fiber. In strain-stress curve with the kinds of material for lateral confinement, while brittleness failure occurs in plain concrete just after maximum load, it is improved in some degree in confined concrete due to increase of the strain by increase of toughness. But, elastic modulus shows the similar tendency between confined concrete and plain concrete. Length change ratio by drying shrinkage shows little a bit in order of carbon fiber, glass fiber and metal lath due to confinement.
