  • This study was carried out to examine the relationships between seasonal variations of soil $CO_2$ efflux rates and soil environmental factors in matured Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis stands in the Wola national experimental forests, southern Korea. Soil $CO_2$ efflux rates were measured monthly from March 2015 to February 2016. Mean soil $CO_2$ efflux rates during the study period were significantly higher in the Q. variabilis ($mean{\pm}standard$ error; $2.27{\pm}0.22{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) than in the P. densiflora ($1.63{\pm}0.12{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) stands. Mean soil water content and pH were also significantly higher in the Q. variabilis ($26.96{\pm}0.93%$, pH 5.19) than in the P. densiflora ($21.32{\pm}0.89%$, pH 4.87) stands, while soil temperature was not significantly different between the P. densiflora ($13.92{\pm}0.67^{\circ}C$) and in the Q. variabilis ($13.52{\pm}0.70^{\circ}C$) stands. $Q_{10}$ values were higher in the Q. variabilis (3.35) than in the P. densiflora (2.72) stands. The results indicate that soil $CO_2$ efflux rates in Q. variabilis stand could be more sensitive by the change of soil temperature compared with P. densiflora stand under a similar site environmental condition.

  • The standardization of eddy-covariance data processing is essential for the analysis and synthesis of vast amount of data being accumulated through continuous observations in various flux measurement networks. End users eventually benefit from the open and transparent standardization protocol by clear understanding of final products such as evapotranspiration and gross primary productivity. In this paper, we briefly introduced KoFlux efforts to standardize data processing methodologies and then estimated uncertainties of surface fluxes due to different processing methods. Based on our scrutiny of the data observed at Gwangneung KoFlux site, net ecosystem exchange and ecosystem respiration were sensitive to the selection of different processing methods. Gross primary production, however, was consistent within errors due to cancellation of the differences in NEE and Re, emphasizing that independent observation of ecosystem respiration is required for accurate estimates of carbon exchange. Nocturnal soil evaporation was small and thus the annually integrated evapotranspiration was not sensitive to the selection of different data processing methods. The implementation of such standardized data processing protocol to AsiaFlux will enable the establishment of consistent database for validation of models of carbon cycle, dynamic vegetation, and land-atmosphere interaction at regional scale.

  • As an alternative for the traditional materials packed in biofilters treating gaseous VOCs, a novel packing material has been developed and tested. In the packing material(named as Hydrogel Bead, HB), pollutant-degrading microorganisms were immobilized in hydrogel consisted of alginate, polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), and powdered activated carbon. A closed-bottle study showed that the HB rapidly removed gaseous styrene without the losses of adsorption and biodegradation capacity. Biofilter column experiments using the HBs also demonstrated that greater than 95% of removal efficiencies were found at an inlet styrene loading rate of $245g/m^3/hr$, which was higher biofilter performance than other elimination capacity reported earlier. Furthermore, when the inlet styrene concentration increased stepwise, the adsorption played an important role in overall styrene removals. The absorbed styrene was found to be biodegraded in the following low inlet loading condition. Consequently, the new HB material is able to successfully minimize the drawbacks of activated carbon(necessity of regeneration) and biological processes(low removal capacity at dynamic loading conditions), and maximize the overall performance of biofilter systems treating VOCs.

  • The transition from a carbon economy based on fossil fuels to a hydrogen economy is necessary to ensure energy security and to combat climate change. In order to pursue the transition to a hydrogen economy while achieving sustainable economic growth, a preliminary study into the establishment of the necessary infrastructure for the future hydrogen economy needs to be carried out. This study addresses the economic and environmental interactions in a dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) model focusing on the economic effects of the introduction of renewable energy into the Korean energy system. Firstly, the introduction of hydrogen results in an increase in the investment in hydrogen production and the reduction of the production cost, ultimately leading to GDP growth. Secondly, the mandatory introduction of renewable energy and associated government subsidies bring about a reduction in total demand. Additionally, the mandatory introduction of hydrogen energy into the power sector helps to reduce CO2 emissions through the transition from a carbon economy-based on fossil energy to a hydrogen economy. This means that hydrogen energy needs to come from non-fossil fuel sources in order for greenhouse gases to be effectively reduced. Therefore, it seems necessary for policy support to be strengthened substantially and for additional studies to be conducted into the production of hydrogen energy from renewable sources.

  • The properties of polystyrene and styrenic copolymer nanocomposites containing carbon nanotubes (CNT) and nanoclays were studied. Polystyrene and styrenic copolymer containing styrene and vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride (SVTAC) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. Polystyrene/CNT/clay and SVTAC/CNT/clay nanocomposites with various concentrations of CNT and different types of clay were prepared via mixing of polystyrene emulsion and clay. SVTAC/CNT nanocomposites showed a better electrical conductivity than PS/CNT nanocomposites. Nanocomposites with more surfactant during polymerization showed a better electrical conductivity than the ones with less surfactant. These indicated the positive effect of comonomer and surfactant on the electrical conductivity. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to analyze the state of CNT dispersion. TEM results showed that CNT loading, comonomer composition and amount of surfactant affected the final dispersion of CNT in nanocomposites. In order to confirm the effects of CNT loading, comonomer composition and the amount of surfactant on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties, DSC and DMA analyses were conducted.

  • Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effects of the processing parameters on supercritical $CO_2\;(SC-CO_2)$. extraction of total carotenoids and ${\beta}$-cyptoxanthin from Citrus unshiu press cake. The parameters tested were $SC-CO_2$ pressure, dynamic extraction time, and concentration of ethanol added as the modifier to $CO_2$. Experimental data correlated well with the processing parameters (p<0.01), and there was a high statistically significant multiple regression relationship for the extraction of total carotenoids and ${\beta}-cyrptoxanthin$ ($R^2=0.9789$ and 0.9796, respectively). The optimal processing conditions were extraction pressure 33.4 and 37.3 MPa, extraction time 39.6 and 41.0 min, ethanol concentration 18.6 and 17.0% for total carotenoids and ${\beta}-cryptozanthin$, respectively. Maximum extraction yields predicted by RSM were 61.1 and 95.8% ppm, respectively. The extraction yield of total carotenoids increased asymptotically with the increase of the extraction pressure. It increased in proportion to extraction time and concentration of the cosolvent. The extraction yield of ${\beta}-cryptoxanthin$ increased with extraction pressure, extraction time, and concentration of the cosolvent. The extraction time and the concentration of the cosolvent, and the interaction between extraction time and the concentration of the cosolvent significantly affected the extraction yields of carotenoids from C. unshiu press cake.

  • Atmospheric pollutants such as Nitrogen Oxides(NOx), Carbon Monoxide(CO), Carbon Dioxide($CO_2$), Particulate Matter(PM) and Hydrocarbons(HC) come from vehicle exhaust gases. Emission curves based on average travel speeds have been employed for estimating on-road emissions as well as evaluating environmental impacts of transportation plans and policies in Korea. Recently, there is a growing interest in estimation methods of vehicle emissions considering relationship between vehicle dynamic driving characteristics and emissions, and incorporating such emission estimators into traffic simulation models. MOVES Lite, a simplified version of MOVES, is one of the estimation methods. In this study, the authors performed a study to develop an adaptable version of MOVES Lite for Korea, called MOVES Lite-K. Vehicle types, driving characteristics, emission rates, and emission standards of Korea were reflected in MOVES Lite-K. The characteristics of emission calculation of MOVES Lite-K and NIER emission curves were compared and the adaptability of MOVES Lite-K were examined.

  • Modified polypropylene (m-PP) was fabricated by furfuryl sulphide (FS) as branching agent and m-PP/nano-filler composites were prepared with silicate and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), using a twin screw extruder. The chemical structures and thermal properties of the m-PP were investigated by FTIR and DSC. The chemical structure of the m-PP was confirmed by the existence of =C-H stretching peak of the branching agent at 3100 $cm^{-1}$. There was no district change in melting temperature in case of m-PP, but a certain increase in crystallization temperature was notified and the increase was in the range of $10-20^{\circ}C$. The rheological properties, filler dispersion and foaming behaviors of the m-PP/nano-filler composites were investigated by dynamic rheometer, X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and scanning/transmission electron microscope (SEM/TEM). m-PP/nano-filler composites showed a high complex viscosity at a low frequency, an increase in melt elasticity, and a high shear thinning effect. Compared to pure PP, m-PP and m-PP/nano-filler composites were sufficient to enhance the foaming behavior.

  • The use of composite materials for structural fasteners is increasingly common, making it crucial to assess the deformation of these fasteners under fatigue behavior. In this study, clamp-type fasteners were manufactured using carbon fiber reinforced composites, and their structural stability and sectional damage rates were evaluated using electrical resistance measurement during fatigue behavior. While clamp-type composite fasteners exhibited minimal deformation in flat sections, significant deformation occurred in the bent sections due to fatigue. It was observed that insufficient angular stability led to concentrated damage in the bent sections. The dynamic fatigue behavior showed that the length change rate of the composite fasteners was within 0.6%, but the angular change rate reached up to 6%, indicating that the bent sections are the most critical areas. By utilizing the self-sensing capability of the composite fasteners, sectional damage behavior was assessed through electrical resistance measurement. Significant damage was noted in the bent sections due to fatigue, and 3D-CT results revealed substantial deformation and interfacial damage when the initial bend angle of the fasteners was less than 90 degrees. These findings highlight the importance of reinforcing the stiffness of the bent sections and establishing systematic angular standards in the development of composite fasteners.

  • In this study, the internal structural design, dynamic characteristics and load analyses of the small scaled rotor blade required for LCH(Light Civil Helicopter) main rotor wind tunnel test were carried out. The test is performed to evaluate the aerodynamic performance and noise characteristics of the LCH main rotor system. Therefore, the Mach-scale technique was appled to design the small scaled blade to simulate the equivalent aerodynamic characteristics as the full scale rotor system. It is necessary to increase the rotor speed to maintain the same blade tip speed as the full scale blade. In addition, the blade weight, section stiffness, and natural frequency were scaled according to the Mach-type scaling factor(${\lambda}$). For the design of skin, spar, torsion box, which are the main components of the blade, carbon and glass fiber composite materials were adopted, and composite materials are prepreg types that can be supplied domestically. The KSec2D program was used to evaluate the section stiffness of the blade. Also, structural loads and dynamic characteristics of the Mach scale blade were investigated through the comprehensive rotorcraft analysis program CAMRADII.
