  • The use of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a reinforcing material in a polymer matrix has increased in various industries. In this study, the flexural behavior of CNT-modified epoxy/basalt (CNT/epoxy/basalt) composites is investigated. The effects of CNT modification with silane on the flexural properties of CNT/epoxy/basalt composites were also examined. Flexural tests were performed using epoxy/basalt, oxidized CNT/epoxy/basalt, and silanized CNT/epoxy/basalt multi-scale composites. After the flexural tests, the fracture surfaces of the specimens were examined via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the fracture mechanisms of the CNT/epoxy/basalt multi-scale composites with respect to the CNT modification process. The flexural properties of the epoxy/basalt composites were improved by the addition of CNTs. The flexural modulus and strength of the silane-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt multi-scale composites increased by approximately 54% and 34%, respectively, compared to those of epoxy/basalt composites. A SEM examination of the fracture surfaces revealed that the improvement in the flexural properties of the silane-treated CNT/epoxy/basalt multi-scale composites could be attributed to the improved dispersion of the CNTs in the epoxy.

  • For an analysis of nonlinear dynamic behavior in carbon nanotube(CNT) an electrostatic force of CNT was investigated. The boundary condition in the CNT was assumed to clamped-clamped case at both ends. This type of CNT is widely used as micro and nano-sensors. For larger gaps in between sensor and electrode the van der Waals force can be ignored. The electrostatic force can be expressed as linear form using Taylor series. However, the first term of the series expansion was investigated here. The electrostatic force From this study we can conclude that for larger gaps the electrostatic force play an important role in determining the deflections as well as the pull-in voltage of simply supported switches.

  • Polyimide/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite films, for potential use in high performance microelectronics and aerospace applications, were prepared by mixing a polyisoimide (PII) solution and a CNT suspension in NMP, followed by casting, evaporation and thermal imidization. The CNTs were modified by a nitric acid treatment to improve the thermal and electrical properties, as well as to provide good dispersion of the CNTs in a polymer matrix. The formation of functional groups on the modified CNT was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the modified CNTs to be well dispersed in the polyimide matrix, with a uniform diameter of ca. 50 nm. The thermal stability of the films containing the CNTs was improved due to the enhanced interfacial interaction and good dispersion between the polyimide matrix and modified CNTs. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficient of the composites films was slightly decreased, but the dielectric constants increased linearly with increasing CNT content.

  • Carbon nanotube (CNT) tips in tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM) enable very high-resolution imaging, measurements, and manipulation at the nanoscale. We present recent results based on experimental analysis that yield new insights into the dynamics of CNT probe tips in tapping mode AFM. Experimental measurements are presented of the frequency response and dynamic amplitude-distance data of a high-aspect-ratio multi-walled (MW) CNT tip to demonstrate the non-linear features including tip amplitude saturation preceding the dynamic buckling of the MWCNT. Surface scanning is performed using a MWCNT tip on a SiO$_2$ grating to verify the imaging instabilities associated with MWCNT buckling when used with normal control schemes in the tapping mode. Lastly, the choice of optimal setpoints for tapping mode control using CNT probe tip are discussed using the experimental results.

  • Adhesion between carbon nanotube (CNT) arrays is measured and characterized for number of different contact areas. The CNT arrays are directly grown on an electrostatic microactuator, and they make contact with each other during the growth process. The pull-out force is precisely applied by the microactuator while the contact status is identified by measuring electrical resistance between the CNT arrays. We have designed different contact areas of 1000, 6000, and 8500 ${\mu}m^2$ between the CNT arrays, and the corresponding adhesion increases from 0.9 to 3.7 ${\mu}N$ as the contact area increases.

  • The preparation of $Ti_{50}Cu_{28}Ni_{15}Sn_7$ metallic glass composite powders was accomplished by the mechanical alloying of a pure Ti, Cu, Ni, Sn and carbon nanotube (CNT) powder mixture after 8 h milling. In the ball-milled composites, the initial CNT particles were dissolved in the Ti-based alloy glassy matrix. The bulk metallic glass composite was successfully prepared by vacuum hot pressing the as-milled CNT/$Ti_{50}Cu_{28}Ni_{15}Sn_7$ metallic glass composite powders. A significant hardness increase with the CNT additions was observed for the consolidated composite compacts.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have received increased interest in reinforcing research for polymer matrix composites due to their exceptional mechanical characteristics. Its high surface area/volume ratio and aspect ratio enable polymer-based composites to make the most of its features. This study focuses on the experimental tensile testing and fabrication of carbon nanotube reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams, exploring various micromechanical models. By examining the performance of these models alongside experimental results, the research aims to better understand and optimize the mechanical properties of CNTRC materials. Tensile properties of neat epoxy and 0.3%; 0.4% and 0.5% by CNT reinforced laminated single layer (0°/90°) carbon fiber composite beams were investigated. The composite plates were produced in accordance with ASTM D7264 standard. The tensile test was performed in order to see the mechanical properties of the composite beams. The results showed that the optimum amount of CNT was 0.3% based on the tensile capacity. The capacity was significantly reduced when 0.4% CNT was utilized. Moreover, the experimental results are compared with Finite Element Models using ABAQUS. Hashin Failure Criteria was utilized to predict the tensile capacity. Good conformance was observed between experimental and numerical models. More importantly is that Young' Moduli of the specimens is compared with the prediction Halpin-Tsai and Mixture-Rule. Although Halpin-Tsai can accurately predict the Young's Moduli of the specimens, the accuracy of Mixture-Rule was significantly low.

  • Ni-CNT(Carbon Nanotube) composite coatings is were formed by electrodeposition and their physical properties were investigated with variations of CNT content(1, 3, 6. 9 g/L) in the electrolyte solution, while the current density and electroplating time were fixed respectively at $6A/dm^2$ and 90 min.. With increasing CNT content from 1 to 9 g/L, incorporated CNTs into the composite coating were limited from 4.65 wt.% to 7.38 wt.%. Microhardness and contact angle values were increased with increasing CNT content of upto 3 g/L. With increasing the CNT content further, physical properties were degraded due to agglomeration, poor adhesion of CNTs to Ni matrix and thus rough surfaces. Optimum electroplating conditions were found to be the CNT content of 3 g/L, current density of 6 A/dm2 and electroplating time of 90 min.

  • We prepared yarned carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers from a CNT forest synthesized on a Si wafer by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The yarned CNT fibers were thermally annealed to reduce their resistance by removing the amorphous carbonaceous impurities present in the fibers. The resistance of the yarned CNT fiber gradually decreased with an increase in the annealing temperature from $200^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$ but increased again above $450^{\circ}C$. We carried out thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to confirm the burning properties of the amorphous carbonaceous impurities and the crystalline CNTs present in the fibers. The pattern of the mass change of the sample CNT fibers was very similar to that of the resistance change. We conclude that CNT fibers should be thermally annealed at temperatures below $400^{\circ}C$ for reducing and stabilizing their resistance.
