  • This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-oil with n mixture of a refrigerant oil and carbon nano-particles in the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors. Frictional loss in the thrust slide-bearing occupies a large part of total mechanical loss in scroll compressors. The characteristics of friction and anti-wear Lising nano-oil is evaluated using the thrust bearing tester for measuring friction surface temperature and the coefficient of friction at the thrust slide-bearing as a function of normal loads up to 4,000 N and orbiting speed up to 3,200 rpm. It is found that the coefficient of friction increases with decreasing orbiting speed and normal force. The friction coefficient of carbon nano-oil is 0.015, while that of pure oil is 0.023 under the conditions of refrigerant gas R-22 at the pressure of 5 bars. It is believed that carbon nano-particles can be coated on the friction surfaces and the interaction of nano-particles between surfaces can be improved the lubrication in the friction surfaces. Carbon nano-oilenhances the characteristics of the anti-wear and friction at the thrust slide-bearing of scroll compressors.

  • Combustion characteristics and toxicity of combustion gas of wallpaper samples were analyzed to evaluate the fire risk of wallpaper furnished in living space. In this study ash residue ratio was measured with high temperature electric furnace, and thermal analysis was carried out with TGA. Combustion time and smoke concentration were measured with cone heater and combustion gas analyzer. Smoke density of samples was measured using smoke chamber of ASTM E 662. The experimental results were showed as followings. Pyrolysis of silk wallpaper started at lower temperature compared to the other samples. It means that the silk wallpaper can be ignited at low heat flux and will have more fire risk than the others. Ignition time by radiation heat flux of silk wallpaper is shorter compared to the other samples, so evacuation time must be reduced. In the case of vinyl coated silk wall paper, carbon mono oxide concentration is the highest and the toxicity and damage effect to consciousness was stronger compared to the other samples. Smoke density of silk wall paper and fire retardant mixed coated silk wall paper were very high due to vinyl coating.

  • Work roll wear in the cold rolling of steel strip is strongly affected by rolling materials, rolling conditions and lubrication. Tests were performed to find the effects of rolling materials under the same lubricating conditions. Surface roughness of cold rolled steel strip as well as the coating technique itself is quite improtant in obtaining high image clarity of electronic products and car outer panels. Therefore this paper reviews for improvement of roughness and peak count about the surface of Cr coated work roll is investigated from the actual temper mill. The conclusions were obtained as follows; 1) Work roll wear in the cold rolling of steel strip is strongly affected by carbon contents of rolling materials, but there is not a separating force and total reduction ratio. 2) The roughness of strip surface is larger in the direction of width than in roll direction. 3) The electro-discharge textured roll has more uniform roughness distribu- tion than shot blasted roll and it's life time is two times longer than shot blasted because it has more harmonic wave roughness, and the higher peak count of surface roughness. 4) The life time of Cr coated work roll is 2 times longer than that of shot blasted work roll and variation of peak count, roughness and life time of Cr coated work roll is similar to electro-discharge texturing work roll. 5) The proper Cr coating thickness is 10 .mu. m at the work roll of temper mill.

  • The key component of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane and catalyst layers (anode and cathode electrode). Generally the catalyst layer is coated on the porous electrode supporter (e.g. carbon paper or cloth) using various coating methods such as brushing, decal transfer, spray coating and screen printing methods. However, these methods were disadvantageous in terms of the uniformity of catalyst layer thickness, catalyst loss, and coating time. In this work, we used bar-coating method which can prepare the catalyst layer with uniform thickness for MEA of DMFC. The surface and cross-section morphologies of the catalyst layers were observed by SEM. The performances and resistance of the MEAs were investigated through a single cell evaluation and impedance analyzer.

  • In this paper, dynamic buckling of a smart sandwich nanotube is studied. The nanostructure is composed of a carbon-nanotube with inner and outer surfaces coated with ZnO piezoelectric layers, which play the role of sensor and actuator. Nanotube is under magnetic field and ZnO layers are under electric field. The nanostructure is located in a viscoelastic environment, which is assumed to obey Visco-Pasternak model. Non-local piezo-elasticity theory is used to consider the small-scale effect, and Kelvin model is used to describe the structural damping effects. Surface stresses are taken into account based on Gurtin-Murdoch theory. Hamilton principle in conjunction with zigzag shear-deformation theory is used to obtain the governing equations. The governing equations are then solved using the differential quadrature method, to determine dynamic stability region of the nanostructure. To validate the analysis, the results for simpler case studies are compared with others reported in the literature. Then, the effect of various parameters such as small-scale, surface stresses, Visco-Pasternak environment and electric and magnetic fields on the dynamic stability region is investigated. The results show that considering the surface stresses leads to an increase in the excitation frequency and the dynamic stability region happens at higher frequencies.

  • Diamond-like carbon (DLC) films have been widely used in many industrial applications because of their outstanding mechanical and chemical properties like hardness, wear resistance, lubricous property, chemical stability, and uniformity of deposition. Also, DLC films coated on paper, polymer, and metal substrates have been extensively used. In this work, in order to improve the printing quality and plate wear of polymer printing plates, different deposition conditions were used for depositing DLC on the polymer printing plates using the Pulsed DC PECVD method. The deposition temperature of the DLC films was under $100^{\circ}C$, in order to prevent the deformation of the polymer plates. The properties of each DLC coating on the polymer concave printing plate were analyzed by measuring properties such as the roughness, surface morphology, chemical bonding, hardness, plate wear resistance, contact angle, and printing quality of DLC films. From the results of the analysis of the properties of each of the different DLC deposition conditions, the deposition conditions of DLC + F and DLC + Si + F were found to have been successful at improving the printing quality and plate wear of polymer printing plates because the properties were improved compared to those of polymer concave printing plates.

  • The paper addresses contribution to the modeling and optimization of major machinability parameters (cutting force, surface roughness, and tool wear) in finish dry hard turning (FDHT) for machinability evaluation of hardened AISI grade die steel D3 with PVD-TiN coated (Al2O3-TiCN) mixed ceramic tool insert. The turning trials are performed based on Taguchi's L18 orthogonal array design of experiments for the development of regression model as well as adequate model prediction by considering tool approach angle, nose radius, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut as major machining parameters. The models or correlations are developed by employing multiple regression analysis (MRA). In addition, statistical technique (response surface methodology) followed by computational approaches (genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization) have been employed for multiple response optimization. Thereafter, the effectiveness of proposed three (RSM, GA, PSO) optimization techniques are evaluated by confirmation test and subsequently the best optimization results have been used for estimation of energy consumption which includes savings of carbon footprint towards green machining and for tool life estimation followed by cost analysis to justify the economic feasibility of PVD-TiN coated Al2O3+TiCN mixed ceramic tool in FDHT operation. Finally, estimation of energy savings, economic analysis, and sustainability assessment are performed by employing carbon footprint analysis, Gilbert approach, and Pugh matrix, respectively. Novelty aspects, the present work: (i) contributes to practical industrial application of finish hard turning for the shaft and die makers to select the optimum cutting conditions in a range of hardness of 45-60 HRC, (ii) demonstrates the replacement of expensive, time-consuming conventional cylindrical grinding process and proposes the alternative of costlier CBN tool by utilizing ceramic tool in hard turning processes considering technological, economical and ecological aspects, which are helpful and efficient from industrial point of view, (iii) provides environment friendliness, cleaner production for machining of hardened steels, (iv) helps to improve the desirable machinability characteristics, and (v) serves as a knowledge for the development of a common language for sustainable manufacturing in both research field and industrial practice.

  • Recent studies on recyclable materials in the packaging have an increased attention due to the eco-friendly policies of reducing carbon dioxide emissions in worldwide. Roasted coffee beans mostly packed in multi-layered films and papers according to their expiration date. To satisfy both recyclability and barrier properties, researches have been continued on paper-based packaging materials to enhance their properties. In this study, packaging materials for coffee beans are developed by laminating bioplastic films on papers. The tests of packaging materials were performed with mechanical properties, gas and water vaper permeability, recyclability and storage quality for coffee beans. Compared to other samples, the paper/bioplastics-based coffee package composed of starch coated papers and two bioplastics showed the lowest barrier properties, comparable mechanical strength and ability to maintain the quality of roasted coffee beans. Thus, it could be a good alternative for multi-layered packages for roasted coffee beans.

  • This paper was to investigate of a adhesiveness for the plasma sprayed coating materials did salt spray by acoustic emission method in tensile loadings. The powders used for the coating were nickel aluminum composite powder Ni-4.5wt.%Al and titanium dioxide powder $TiO_2$. These powders were coated on a carbon steel S45C by plasma spray method. The result solution was a 5% NaCl and the slat spray times were 2, 5 and 10 hours respectively. The salt solution penetrated into the surface of the substrate through pore of the coating layer built in the process of plasma spay. Corrosion productions formed on the surface of substrate. The adhesiveness between the substrate and the coating layer is weaken by corrosion and the exfoliation initiated chiefly at the corrosion surface of the substrate. The AE events and energy of the corroded coating specimens decreased as the salt spray times increased.

  • In this paper, a copper foil-thick grapheme (thin graphite sheet)-copper foil structure is reported to achieve mechanically strong and high thermal conductive layer suitable for heat spreading components. Since graphene provides much higher thermal conductivity than copper, thick graphene embedded copper layer can achieve higher effective thermal conductivity which is proportional to graphene/copper thickness ratio. Since copper is nonreactive with carbon material which is graphene, chromium is used as adhesion layer to achieve copper-thick graphene-copper bonding for graphene embedded copper layer. Both sides of thick graphene were coated with chromium as an adhesion layer followed by copper by sputtering. The copper foil was bonded to sputtered copper layer on thick graphene. Angstrom's method was used to measure the thermal conductivity of fabricated copper-thick graphene-copper structure. The thermal conductivity of the copper-thick graphene-copper structures is measured as $686W/m{\cdot}K$ which is 1.6 times higher than thermal conductivity of pure copper.
