The purpose of this study is to evaluate the regenerated bone histollogically using titanium reinforced ePTFE(TR-ePTFE) membrane and to investigate cell occlusiveness, wound stabilization and tissue integration of TR-ePTFE membrane. Adult male rabbits (mean BW 2kg) and TR9W (W.L.Gore&Associate.INC,USA) were used in this study. Intramarrow penetration defects were surgically created with round carbide bur(HP long #6) on calvaria of rabbits. TR-ePTFE membrane was applied to defect. Then guided bone regeneration was carried out using TR-ePTFE membrane and resorbable suture. At 2,4,8,12 weeks after the surgery, animals were sacrificed. Nondecalcified specimens were processed for histologic analysis. The result and conclusion of this study were as follows: 1. TR-ePTFE membrane had good ability of biocompatibility and cell occlusiveness. 2. space making for guided bone regenerayion was good at TR-ePTFE membrane. 3. Tissue integration was not good at TR-ePTFE membrane. So, wound stabilization was not good. 4. At 8 weeks, 12 weeks after GBR procedure, bone formation was seen. From the above results, TR-ePTFE membrane fixed tightiy on alveolar bone might be recommended for the early bone formation.
The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of enamel matrix derivative on guided bone regeneration with intramarrow penetration in rabbits. Eight adult male rabbits (mean BW 2Kg) were used in this study. Intramarrow penetration defects were surgically created with round carbide bur(HP long #6) on calvaria of rabbits. Defects were assigned to the control group grafted with mixture of the same quantity of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft and deproteinized bovine bone mineral. Then, guided bone regeneration was carried out using resorbable membrane and suture. Enamel matrix derivative applied to defects was assigned to the test group. And treated as same manners as the control group. At 1, 2, 3 and 8 weeks after the surgery, animals were sacrificed, specimens were obtained and stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin for light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows : 1. At 1, 2 and 3 weeks, no differences were observed between the control group and the test group in the aspect of bone formation around bone graft. 2. Proliferation of blood capillary was faster in the test group than in the control group. 3. Bone regeneration in intramarrow penetration was faster in the test group than in the control group. 4. At 8 weeks, new osteoid tissue formation around bone graft was more prominent in the test group than in the control group. From the above results, enamel matrix derivative might be considered as the osteopromotion material and effective in the guided bone regeneration with intramarrow penetration.
The effects of gas composition, pressure, temperature and time on the case thickness, hardness and nitride formation in the surface of tool steels(STD11 and STD61) have been studied by micro-pulse plasma nitriding. External compound layer and internal diffusion layer and the diffusion layer were observed in the nitrided case of tool steels. The relative amounts and kind of phases formed in the nitrided case changed with the change of nitriding conditions. Generally, only nitride phases such as ${\gamma}(Fe_4N)$, ${\varepsilon}(Fe_{2-3}N)$, or $Cr_{1.75}V_{0.25}N_2$ phases were detected in the compound layer, while nitride and carbide phases such as ${\varepsilon}-nitride(Fe_{2-3}N)$, $(Cr,Fe)_{\gamma}C_3$ or $Fe_3C$ were detected in the diffusion layer by XRD analysis. The thickness of compound layer increased with the increase of nitrogen content in the gas composition. Maximum case depth was obtained at gas pressure of 200Pa.
This study focuses on the fabrication of a WC/Co composite powder from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere for the recycling of WC/Co hardmetal. Mixed powders are manufactured by mechanically milling the oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap and carbon black with varying powder/ball weight ratios. The oxide powder of WC-13 wt% Co hardmetal scrap consists of $WO_3$ and $CoWO_4$. The mixed powder mechanically milled at a lower powder/ball weight ratio (high mechanical milling energy) has a more rapid carbothermal reduction reaction in the formation of WC and Co phases compared with that mechanically milled at a higher powder/ball weight ratio (lower mechanical milling energy). The WC/Co composite powder is fabricated at $900^{\circ}C$ for 6 h from the oxide of WC/Co hardmetal scrap using solid carbon in a hydrogen gas atmosphere. The fabricated WC/Co composite powder has a particle size of approximately $0.25-0.5{\mu}m$.
Metallic structures in the oil and gas production undergo severe degradation due to sweet and sour corrosion caused by the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2S$ in the fluid environment. The corrosion behavior of 304 austenitic stainless was investigated in the presence of varying concentrations of $CO_2$ or $H_2S$ and $CO_2+H_2S$ to understand the effect of the parameters either individually or in combination. Potentiodynamic polarization study revealed that a small amount of $CO_2$ aided in the formation of calcareous deposit of protective layer on passive film of 304 steel, while increase in $CO_2$ concentration ruptured the layer resulting in sweet corrosion. The presence of $S^{2-}$ damaged the passive and protective layer of the steel and higher levels increased the degradation rate. Electrochemical impedance studies revealed lower polarization resistance and impedance at higher concentration of $CO_2$ or $H_2S$, supporting the outcomes of polarization study. XRD analysis revealed different types of iron carbides and iron sulphides corresponding to sweet and sour corrosion as the corrosion products, respectively. SEM analysis revealed the presence of uniform, localized and sulphide cracking in sour corrosion and general corrosion with protective carbide layer amid for sweet corrosion.
To evaluate steam oxidation behaviours of Alloy 617 and Haynes 230, oxidation test were performed at $900^{\circ}C$ in steam and $steam+20\;vol.-%\;H_2$ environments. Oxidation rate in steam condition was similar to that in air for Alloy 617, while it was slightly lower for Haynes 230. When hydrogen was added to steam, oxidation rate was enhanced. Isolated $MnTiO_3$ particle were formed on $Cr_2O_3$ oxide layer and sub layer $Cr_2O_3$ were formed in steam and $steam+20\;vol.-%\;H_2$ for Alloy 617. On the other hands, $MnCr_2O_3$ layer were formed on top of $Cr_2O_3$ oxide layer for Haynes 230. The extensive sub layer $Cr_2O_3$ formation was resulted from the oxygen inward diffusion in such environments. When hydrogen was added, the oxide morphology was changed from polygonal to platelet because of the accelerated diffusion of cations under the oxide layer. In addition, decarburized zone was extended as hydrogen participated into the reactions causing carbide dissolution.
Silicon carbides with self-reinforced microstructure which hore a small grain matrix and dispersed large grains with rod-like type were prepared by the liquid-phase sintering and the control of starting phases of raw materials. The specimens with self-reinforced microstructure could be obtained from the compacts with mixed compositions of $\alpha$-SiC and 10-50 % $\beta$-SiC powders and by the pressureless sintering at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 5h. Large grains with rod or plate-like types were 4H-SiC and small grains with equi-axed type were 6H-SiC. Fracture grains with rod or plate-like types were 4h-SiC and small grains with equi-axed type were 6H-SiC. Fracture toughness of specimens with self-reinforced microstructure was increased by the crack deflection and formation of microcracking due to the existence of rod-like large grains during crack propagation.
The creation process of a typical machined surface is treated here as a dynamic system. An investigation is carried out to establish a relationship between the characteristics of cutting force fluctuations that cause vibration response of the tool-workpiece system and the formation of surface in face cutting by sintered carbide cutting tool. Cutting force is measured and analyzed in frequency domain. The power spectral densities of cutting force give a useful information in surface generation and it can be used to find out the control factor of surface roughness. The terms, PSD ratio & Normalized spindle frequency PSD, are defined and when the value of power in spindle frequency is absolutely little but relatively large, it is obtained high accuracy surface roughness. The aim of this research is to find surface profile by measured and analyzed cutting force signals. The simulation of surface generation gives the comprechension of its mechanism and help to predict and control the surface quality. In this study, it is suggested what informations about surface generation can be acquired from the cuttuing force signal and an way of generating a better surface.

High speed machining (HSM), specifically end milling and ball end cutting, is attracting interest in the die/mold or aerospace industries for the machining of complex 3D surfaces. HSM of difficult-to-cut materials such as die/mold steels, titanium alloys or nickel based superalloys generates the concentrated thermal/frictional damage at the cutting edge of the tool and rapidly decreases the tool life. Following a brief introduction on HSM and reated aerospace or die/mold work, the paper reviews published data on the effect of cutter/workpiece orientation and cutting environments on tool performance. First, experimental work is detailed on the effect of cutter orientation on tool life, cutting forces, chip formation, specific force and workpiece surface roughness. Cutting was performed using 8 mm diameter PVD coated solid carbide cutters with the workpiece mounted at an angle of 45 degree from the cutter axis. A horizontal downwards cutting orientation proveded the best tool life with cut lengths ∼50% longer than for all other directions (horizontal upwards, vertical downwards, vertical upwards). Second, the cutting environments were investigated for dry, flood coolant, and compressed chilly air coolant cutting. The experiments were performed for various hardened materials and various coated tools. The results show that the cutting environment using compressed cilly air coolant provided better tool life than the flood coolant or the dry.
Microstructure and mechanical properties of five Cr-Mo steels for nuclear industry applications have been investigated. Transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, differential scanning calorimeter, hardness, tensile, and impact test were used to evaluate the Cr and W effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties. Microstructures of Cr-Mo steels after tempering are classified into three types : bainitic 2.25Cr-lMo steel, martensitic Mod.9Cr-lMo, HT9M, and HT9W steels, and dual phase HT9 steel. The majority of the precipitates were found to be M$_{23}$C$_{6}$ carbides. As minor phases, fine needle-like V(C,N), spherical NbC, fine needle-like Cr-rich Cr$_2$N, and Cr-rich M$_{7}$C$_3$were also found. Addition of 2wt.% W in Cr-Mo steels retarded the formation of subgrain and dissolution of Cr$_2$N precipitates. Hardness and ultimate tensile strength increased with increasing Cr content. Though Cr content of HT9W steel was lower than that of HT9 steel, the hardness of HT9W was higher due to the higher W content. W added HT9W steel had the highest ultimate tensile strength above $600^{\circ}C$. But impact toughness of W added steel (HT9W) and high Cr steel (HT9) was low.w.w.
