  • For compensating the error motion of hydrostatic guideways, the structure and the theoretical design method of ACC(Active Controlled Capillary) are proposed. The maximum controllable range, micro step response and dynamic characteristics of ACC are analyzed experimentally for verifing the availability. The experimental results showed that by the use of ACC, the error motion within 2.7${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of a hydrostatic guideway can be compensated with the resolution of 27nm, 1/100 of uncontolled error, and the frequency band of 5.5Hz. From these results, it Is confirmed that the ACC is very effect to improve the moving accuracy of high or ultra precision hydrostatic guideways.

  • As more high power wide band gap devices are being utilized. the thermal management issues associated with these devices need to be resolved. High power small devices dissipate excessive heat that must be cooled, but traditional cooling methods are insufficient to provide such a cooling means. This paper will evaluate a micro-capillary pumped loop thermal management system that is incorporated into the shim of the device, taking advantage of phase-change to increase the thermal conductivity of the system. The results of the modeling of the thermal management system will be discussed.

  • Nanocellulose was surface-functionalized toward the applications in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) as a green alternative. The focus of this paper is on the effect of this material based nanofluid (NF) on foam lamella stabilization through studying its bubble breakup dynamics and flow behaviors in constricted mircofluidic devices. The NF stabilized foam produced an improved flow resistance across the capillary largely due to the capillary trapped bubbles at the contraction. The "snap-off" caused the NF stabilized foam to produce finer textured bubbles, which can migrate readily forward to the deep porous media, as revealed by the pressure profiles.

  • Concrete is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world. Producing economical and durable concrete is possible by employing pozzolanic materials. The aim of this study is to underline the possibility of the utilization of natural zeolite in producing concrete and investigate its effects basically on the strength and durability of concrete. In the production of concrete mixes, Portland cement was replaced by the natural zeolite at ratios of 0%, 10%, 15%, and 20% by weight. Concretes were produced with total binder contents of $300kg/m^3$ and $400kg/m^3$, but with a constant water to cement ratio of 0.60. In addition to compressive and flexural strength measurements, freeze-thaw and high temperature resistance measurements, rapid chloride permeability, and capillary water absorption tests were performed on the concrete mixes. Compared to the rest mixes, concrete mixes containing 10% zeolite yielded in with the highest compressive and flexural strengths. The rapid chloride permeability and the capillary measurements were decreased as the natural zeolite replacement was increased. Freeze-thaw resistance also improved significantly as the replacement ratio of zeolite was increased. Under the effect of elevated temperature, natural zeolite incorporated concretes with lower binder content yielded higher compressive strength. However, the compressive strengths of concretes with higher binder content after elevated temperature effect were found to be lower than the reference concrete.

  • Anticarcinogenic Effect of garlic juice on hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis induced by 9, 10-dimethyl-1, 2-benzanthracene were studied by investigating hamster body weight gain, the skin color of and distribution of capillary blood vessels in their buccal pouches. Amount of garlic juice applied were 1% and 3% in two groups of hamsters. Results show that hamsters fed with higher doses of garlic juice gained less weight. Hamsters fed with garlic juice possessed a pale pink color buccal pouch, and a red color pouch was observed in hamsters which were not fed with garlic juice. Also, capillary vessels in hamster buccal pouches were less distinguishable in garlic juice fed hamsters compared with those in hamsters with no garlic in their diet.

  • The effect of vibration on the viscosity of a shear-thinning fluid was investigated with a newly designed pressure-scanning capillary viscometer. The viscometer was designed to measure non-Newtonian viscosity continuously over a range of shear rates at a time. Low frequency vibration was applied perpendicularly to the direction of the flow. The effect of the transversal vibration was investigated for both Newtonian fluids and non-Newtonian fluids. The experimental results showed that the vibration had no effect on the viscosity of the Newtonian fluids. However, the vibration caused a significant reduction of the shear-thinning fluid viscosity. The viscosity reduction was strongly dependent on both vibration frequency and shear rate. In addition, the viscosity reduction was affected by the amplitude of vibration, and, the bigger amplitude applied, the more viscosity reduction occurred.

  • The objective of the present study was to elucidate the effect of bisphosphonates, anti-osteoporosis agents, on glucose uptake in retinal capillary endothelial cells under normal and high glucose conditions. The change of glucose uptake by pre-treatment of bisphosphonates at the inner blood-retinal barrier (iBRB) was determined by measuring cellular uptake of $[^3H]3$-O-methyl glucose (3-OMG) using a conditionally immortalized rat retinal capillary endothelial cell line (TR-iBRB cells) under normal and high glucose conditions. $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake was inhibited by simultaneous treatment of unlabeled D-glucose and 3-OMG as well as glucose transport inhibitor, cytochalasin B. On the other hand, simultaneous treatment of alendronate or pamidronate had no significant inhibitory effect on $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake by TR-iBRB cells. Under high glucose condition of TR-iBRB cells, $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake was increased at 48 h. However, $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake was decreased significantly by pre-treatment of alendronate or pamidronate compared with the values for normal and high glucose conditions. Moreover, geranylgeraniol (GGOH), a mevalonate pathway intermediate, increased the uptake of $[^3H]3$-OMG reduced by bisphosphonates pre-treatment. But, pre-treatment of histamine did not show significant inhibition of $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake. The glucose uptake may be down regulated by inhibiting the mevalonate pathway with pre-treatment of bisphosphonates in TR-iBRB cells at high glucose condition.

  • This study was conducted to identify the growth characteristics of melon cultivated with mixture medium of scoria and perlite in capillary system. The growth and fruit characteristics of all cultivars cultivated under the nutrient solution capillary supplying system were comprehensively favorable. Fresh fruit weight of the three cultivars was similar to weight criterion (1.8 - 2.0 kg/fruit) of melon. In melon of non-net type ‘Aris’ there were no differences in fruit characteristics between nutrient solution supply methods, but total soluble solid (TSS) was higher in drip and capillary systems showing $15.6^{\circ}$Brix and 15.5$^{\circ}$Brix, respectively, than that of mist spray system showing $14.4^{\circ}$Brix. In melon of net type, ‘Earl's elite’, drip and capillary systems showed better fruit characteristics and higher values of TSS compared to mist spray system. The change in pH in the medium before and after melon cropping was not significant between systems, but the pH of upper layer within medium in all system was higher than that of lower layer. The mineral content within lower layer showed higher value than that of the upper layer in drip system, but reversed in capillary system.

  • We reported the direct effect of intrinsic surface energy of dry adhesive material to the Van der Waals and capillary forces contributions of the total adhesion force in an artificial gecko-inspired adhesion system. To mimic the gecko foot we fabricated tilted nanohairy structures using both lithography and ion beam treatment. The nanohairy structures were replicated from Si wafer mold using UV curable polymeric materials. The control of nanohairs slanting angles was based on the uniform linear argon ion irradiation to the nanohairy polymeric surface. The surface energy was studied utilizing subsequent conventional oxygen ion treatment on the nanohairy structures which resulted in gradient surface energy. Our shear adhesion test results were found in good agreement with the accepted Van der Waals and capillary forces theory in the gecko adhesion system. Surface energy would give a direct impact to the effective Hamaker constant in Van der Waals force and the filling angle (${\varphi}$) of water meniscus in capillary force contributions of gecko inspired adhesion system. With the increasing surface energy, the effective Hamaker constant also increased but the filling angle decreased, resulting in a competition between the two forces. Using a simple mathematical model, we compared our experimental results to show the quantitative contributions of Van der Waals and capillary forces in a single adhesion system on both hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. We found that the Van der Waals force contributes about 82.75% and 89.97% to the total adhesion force on hydrophilic and hydrophobic test surfaces, respectively, while the remaining contribution was occupied by capillary force. We also showed that it is possible to design ultrahigh dry adhesive with adhesion strength of more than 10 times higher than apparent gecko adhesion force by controlling the surface energy and the slanting angle induced-contact line of dry adhesive the materials.
