  • Refrigeration systems can be incorporated with non-adiabatic capillary tubes to improve their efficiency. The non-adiabatic capillary tube is constructed by joining the capillary tube with suction pipe to allow heat transfer between them, which is called capillary tube-suction line heat exchanger(SLHX). There are various joining methods and they may influence the characteristics of the refrigeration cycle. The present work aims to analyze the effect of widely-used two joining methods on the refrigeration cycle. The results show that soldered SLHX has much less thermal resistance than tapered SLHX but slightly outperforms in terms of coefficient of performance(COP) and cooling capacity. The soldered SLHX increased COP and cooling capacity of a refrigerator by 5.09% and 14.77% while the tapered SLHX did by 5.05% and 14.75%, respectively.

  • Salt cementation, a typical naturally-cemented phenomenon, may occur due to water evaporation under the change of climate. Capillary force may influence the distribution of cement in granular soils. This study addresses the effect of capillary force on salt cementation using five different techniques: cone penetration test, electrical conductivity measurement, photographic imaging technique, nondestructive imaging technique, and process monitoring by elastic wave. Glass beads modeling a particulate media was mixed with salt water and then dried in an oven to create the cementation condition. Experimental results show that salt cementation highly concentrates at the top of the small particle size specimens and at the middle or the bottom of the large particle specimens. The predicted capillary heights are similar to the locations of high salt concentration in the cemented specimens. Five suggested methods show that the behavior of salt-cemented granular media heavily depends on the capillary force.

  • A formal solution method using the complex analysis is given for the problems derived by Longuet-Higgins(1963). The same method is applied to a new perturbation problem of higher approximation. Interpretation of its solution made it possible to confirm that the rough agree-ment of Longuet-Higgins\`s prediction with experimental data of Cox(1958) was mainly due to the fact that the gravity effect in the perturbation problem was neglected for the case when the basic gravity wave not sufficiently steep.

  • We consider. a horizontal static liquid layer on a planar solid boundary. The layer is evaporating when the plate is heated. Vapor recoil and thermo-capillary are discussed along with the effect of mass loss and vapor convection due to evaporating liquid and non-equilibrium thermodynamic effects. These coupled systems of equations are reduced to a single evolution equation for the local thickness of the liquid layer by using a long-wave asymptotics. The partial differential equation is solved numerically.

  • The thermal performance of a flat evaporator for capillary pumped loop (CPL) applications was investigated. Two to four layers of coarse wire screen wicks were placed onto the heated surface to provide irregular passages for vapor flow. The evaporator and condenser were separated by a distance of 1.2 m and connected by individual liquid and vapor lines. The wall material was copper and the working fluid was ethanol. The experimental facility utilized a combination of capillary and gravitational forces for liquid return, and distribution over the evaporator surface. The tubing used for vapor and liquid lines was 9.35 mm or less in diameter and heat was removed from the condenser by convection of air. A heat flux of up to $4.9{\times}10^4$ $W/m^2$ was applied to a flat evaporator having dimensions of 100 mm by 200 mm, 20 mm thick. The thermal resistance of the system as well as the temperature characteristics of the system was investigated as the evaporator heat flux and the condenser cooling capacity varied. The performance of the evaporator and effect of condenser cooling capacity were analyzed and discussed.

  • Plasticity is the ability of clay to respond to pressure with a continuous and permanent change of shape in any direction without breaking apart, and hold that shape when released. In this work, the effect of water content and aging period on the plasticity of porcelain clay was evaluated using the capillary rheometer to measure the flow rate and the shear stress. The shear stress of porcelain clay was slightly increased with increasing the aging period, indicating that the plasticity of porcelain clay was influenced by an organic content. It was also observed that the water content in the porcelain clay had a great influence on the plasticity of porcelain clay. The shear stress with water content of 21 wt% was sharply increased with increasing shear rate, but the shear stresses with water contents of 24 and 27 wt% is gently incremented.

  • In this study, we made RFC, RCC and NCC according to the method by which polypropylene capillary tube was adopted, and evaluated cooling performance of each system through model experiments. We also investigated an applicability of the combined use of radiant cooling and dehumidification system. The results are as follows: In case of normal cooling load, RFC and RCC maintained set temperature without a condensation. But, in case of peak cooling load, RFC and RCC resulted in the lack of cooling performance and caused a condensation at the radiation surface. Consequently, the only use of polypropylene capillary tube is considered not to be enough for cooling in real application. Using the combination of a dehumidification and radiant cooling system maintained the set temperature without a condensation. NCC kept the set temperature at anytime without a condensation. It is more economic than packaged air-conditioner system due to the cooling effect of the floor surface.

  • Determination of Co(II) ion as a 4-(2-thiazolylazo)resorcinol(TAR) or 5-methyl-4-(2-thiazolylazo)resorcinol(5MTAR) chelate was accomplished by reversed-phase capillary high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-Capillary-HPLC) using a Vydac $C_4$ column and MeCN-water mixture as mobile phase. The effect of change in pH and MeCN percentage of the mobile phase on the retention factor, k and peak intensity were evaluated. It was found that 30% MeCN (v/v) of pH 5.60 or 7.20 was adequate as mobile phase when TAR or 5MTAR is used. Detection limit (D.L., S/N=3) in each case was $2.0\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$M (11.8 ppb) and $3.0\;{\times}\;10^{-7}$ M (17.7 ppb). The Co(II) ion in mineral and waste water was determined with the optimum column and mobile phase.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of active vibration exercise of upper limb on physical capacity index (endurance, grip strength, balance, and flexibility) and vasomotor index (capillary length and body surface temperature) in middle aged women. 20 participants randomly divided into two groups: vibro-swing exercise (VSE) and non vibro-swing exercise (NVSE). Subjects in each group measured the 30 second arm curl test, hand dynamometer, one leg standing test, back scratch test, nail fold capillary microscope (NFM), and digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI) before and after exercise. The results showed that active vibration exercise of upper limb with vibro-swing equipment increased the endurance, balance ability, and the capillary length. In addition, changes in body temperature immediately after exercise were predicted to affect vasomotor. Active vibration exercise of upper limb has the advantage of being able to exercise anywhere regardless of the location by inducing different frequency changes in movement of various ranges and velocity. For this reason, the combination of vibration and active movement can be expected the physiological effects when producing exercise programs for middle aged women.

  • We wish to develop micro-total analysis system (TAS) on a chip, and to make a trial approach to solve the important problem that is to detect ions separated by the electric field. We propose an idea, which is as for rotational motions of dipolar ions, which are affected by the ion atmosphere in outer regions. This is a new kind of the ion-sensitive field effect transistor (ISFET). We wish to develop the ISFET chips, and give more effective, fast and sensitive, capillary electrophoresis is designed in near future.
