  • This paper presents an investigation into the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams retrofitted by ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) layers. The experimental study has been conducted in two parts. In the first part, four methods of retrofitting with UHPFRC layers in both the up and down sides of the beams have been proposed and their efficiency in the bonding of the normal concrete and ultra-high performance fiber-reinforced concrete has been discussed. The results showed that using the grooving method and the pre-casted UHPFRC layers in comparison with the sandblasting method and the cast-in-place UHPFRC layers leads to increase the load carrying capacity and the energy absorption capacity and causes high bond strength between two concretes. In the second part of the experimental study, the tests have been conducted on the beams with single UHPFRC layer in the down side and in the up side, using the effective retrofitting method chosen from the first part. The results are compared with those of non-retrofitted beam and the results of the first part of experimental study. The results showed that the retrofitted beam with two UHPFRC layers in the up and down sides has the highest energy absorption and load carrying capacity. A finite element analysis was applied to prediction the flexural behavior of the composite beams. A good agreement was achieved between the finite element and experimental results. Finally, a parametric study was carried out on full-scale retrofitted beams. The results indicated that in all retrofitted beams with UHPFRC in single and two sides, increasing of the UHPFRC layer thickness causes the load carrying capacity to be increased. Also, increases of the normal concrete compressive strength improved the cracking load of the beams.

  • The seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures with irregularities leading to soft first floor is studied using capacity assessment procedures. The soft first story effect is investigated for the cases: (i) slab-column connections without beams at the first floor, (ii) tall first story height and (iii) pilotis type building (open ground story). The effects of the first floor irregularity on the RC frame structure performance stages at global and local level (limit states) are investigated. Assessment based on the Capacity Spectrum Method (ATC-40) and on the Coefficient Method (FEMA 356) is also examined. Results in terms of failure modes, capacity curves, interstory drifts, ductility requirements and infills behaviour are presented. From the results it can be deduced that the global capacity of the structures is decreased due to the considered first floor morphology irregularities in comparison to the capacities of the regular structure. An increase of the demands for interstory drift is observed at the first floor level due to the considered irregularities while the open ground floor structure (pilotis type) led to even higher values of interstory drift demands at the first story. In the cases of tall first story and slab-column connections without beams soft-story mechanisms have also been observed at the first floor. Rotational criteria (EC8-part3) showed that the structure with slab-column connections without beams exhibited the most critical response.

  • As 3V cathode material, a new doping spinel material, LiMn1.6Se0.4O4 powder with a phase-pure polycrystalline was synthesized by a sol-gel method. In spite of Jahn-teller distortion in 3V region($2.4{\sim}3.5V$), the LiMn1.6Se0.4O4 electrode shows no capacity loss. The material in the 3V region initially delivers a discharge capacity of 100mAh/g which increase with cycling to reach 105mAh/g after 90cycles. And 5V cathode material LiNi0.5-xMxMn1.5O4(M=Cr, V, Fe) compounds have been synthesized by sol-gel method. a series of electroactive spinel compounds, LiNi0.5-xMxMn1.5O4(M=Cr, V, Fe) has been studied by crystallographic and electrochemical methods. The material presents only one plateau at around 4.5 V vs. Li/Li+ with a large discharge capacity of 152mAh/g and fairly good cyclability.

  • The external post-tension technique is one of the best strengthening methods for reinforcement and improvement of the various steel structures and substructure components such as beams. In the present work, the load carrying capacity of the post-tensioned tapered steel beams with external shape memory alloy (SMA) tendons are studied. 3D nonlinear finite element method with ABAQUS software is used to determine the effects of the increase in the flexural strength, and the improvement of the load carrying capacity. The effect of the different parameters, such as geometrical characteristics and the post-tension force applied to the tendons are also studied in this research. The results reveal that the external post-tension with SMA tendons in comparison with the steel tendons causes a significant improvement of the loading capacity. According to this, using SMA tendon for the reinforcement of the tapered beams causes a decrease in weight of these structures and as a consequence causes economic benefits for their application. This method can be used extensively for steel beams due to low executive costs and simplicity of the operation for post-tension.

  • In this study, a series of centrifuge tests were performed in order to observe the bearing capacity of waveform micropile, a new concept of micropile that uses a modified jet grouting process. A total of six models were considered, conventional micropile, jet grouted pile, and four different shapes of waveform micropiles. The test results indicated that the waveform micropile effectively contributes to the increase of the bearing capacity compared to the micropile without the shear keys. Among the waveform micropiles, the model that has a relatively small space between the shear keys showed the most significant improvement of load capacity. Additionally, the ultimate load capacities of all piles were compared using well-known estimation method. As a result, P-S curve method and total settlement method with 25.4 mm were considered suitable to account ultimate load for the waveform micropile.

  • The estimation of pile bearing capacity is important since the design details are determined from the result. There are numerous ways of determining the pile design load, but only few of them are chosen in the actual design. According to the recent investigation in Korea, the formulas proposed by Meyerhof based on the SPT N values are most frequently chosen in the design stage. In the study, various static and dynamic formulas have been used in predicting the allowable bearing capacity of a pile. Further, the reliability of these formulas has been verified by comparing the perdicted values with the static and dynamic load test measurements. Also in cases, these methods of pile bearing capacity determination do not take the time effect consideration, the actual allowable load as determined from pile load test indicates severe deviation from the design value. The principle results of this study are summarized as follows : A a result of estimate the reliability in criterion of the Davisson method, in was showed that Terzaghi & Peck > Chin > Meyerhof > Modified Meyerhof method was the most reliable method for the prediction of bearing capacity. Comparisons of the various pile-driving formulas showed that Modified Engineering News was the most reliable method. However, a significant error happened between dynamic bearing capacity equation was judged that uncertainty of hammer efficiency, characteristics of variable , time effect etc... was not considered. As a result of considering time effect increased skin friction capacity higher than end bearing capacity. It was found out that it would be possible to increase the skin friction capacity 1.99 times higher than a driving. As a result of considering 7 day's time effect, it was obtained that Engineering News. Modified Engineering News. • A seismic strengthening method using Velcro is proposed to improve the seismic performance of columns in RC frame structures. The proposed method was evaluated experimentally using three fabricated RC specimens. Velcro was wrapped around the columns of the RC-frame specimen to prevent concrete spall falling. The reinforcing performance of the Velcro was determined from comparison of results on seismic performance (i.e., strength, displacement, failure mode, displacement ductility capacity and amount of dissipated energy). As the displacement of the reinforced specimens was increased, the amount of dissipated energy increased drastically, and the displacement-ductility-capacity of the reinforced specimens also increased. The final failure mode of RC frame structure was changed. As a result, it was concluded that the proposed seismic strengthening method using Velcro could be used to increase the displacement ductility of RC columns, and could be used to change the final failure mode of RC-frame structures.

  • The main structural system of domestic apartments is the wall-slab system. In such structures, the lack of material strength of wall affects severely on the safety of structures. It is fond frequently that the wall in the apartment structures has lower strength in concrete than the specified. This paper presents the retrofitting method of the reinforced concrete wall with low concrete strength. The tests are performed to investigate the structural behavior and the effects of external reinforcing and thickness increasing on the axial load capacity of walls. Six specimens are tested. As the test results, the external reinforcing method is less effective than thickness increasing method.

  • In this paper, we analyze the effect of co-channel interferers coming from other systems with composite log-normal shadowing and Nakagami fading on the capacity of the imperfect power-controlled DS/CDMA cellular system. The analytical results are compared with the results of Prasad and Jansen in which they derive the result under the condition of imperfect power-control of DS/CDMA system and without considering interference. And the outage probability is calculated fro the effect of the log-normal/Nakagami faded inferers on DS/CDMA system using Schwartz and Yeh's method. With the deviation of outage probability, we analyzed the decreases in the capacity of DS/CDMA system with the variation of the paramenters of the imperfect power-control, the fadig index, the processing gain, the power ratio, the voice activity factor, and the number of interferers. Analysis reuslts have shown that the capacity of DS/CDMA system is very sensitive to the imperfect power-control and the number of interferers. It is shown that the DS/CDMA system capacity decreased according to increase of the deviation of the impertect power-control, the increase of the fading, and the increase of interferer number.

  • Reinforced concrete deep beams are general structural members used as transfer-girder, pile cap, foundation wall and so on. They have a complex stess formation. Generally, failure mechanisms differ from either continuous deep beams or simple supported deep beams. In continuous deep beams, a negative moment is occurred over intermediate support and the location of maximum moment coincide with high shear force. Therefore, failure usually occurs at this region. While on the other hand, in simple supported deep beam, the region of high shear coincides with the region of low moment. The web opening of deep beams for accepting a facility makes shear behaviors of deep beams more complex and gives rise to an expansion of crack around the opening and a decline of shear capacity of deep beams. Therefore, Engineers must determine a delicate reinforcement method to control a crack and increase a shear capacity. The purpose of this report is a computation of an effective reinforcement method through non-linear finite element method by means of adopting various reinforcement method as variables and a computation of shear capacity formula taking an effectiveness of reinforcement into consideration.
