  • This paper considers a problem of configuring both physical backbone and logical virtual path (VP) networks in a reconfigurable asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network where links are subject to failures. The objective is to determine jointly the VP assignment, the capacity assignment of physical links and the bandwidth allocation of VPs, and the routing assignment of traffic demand at least cost. The network cost includes backbone link capacity expansion cost and penalty cost for not satisfying the maximum throughput of the traffic due to link failures or insufficient link capacities. The problem is formulated as a zero-one non-linear mixed integer programming problem, for which an effective solution procedure is developed by using a Lagrangean relaxation technique for finding a lower bound and a heuristic method exploited for improving the upper bound of any intermediate solution. The solution procedure is tested for its effectiveness with various numerical examples.

  • The demise of the native franchise markets and the emergence of competitive markets in electricity generation service is substantially altering the way that operation and planning activity is conducted and is making it increasingly difficult for market participants such as generation firms to prospect the future electricity markets. Traditional generation expansion planning (GEP) problems which centrally determine the least-cost capacity addition plan that meets forecasted demand within pre-specified reliability criteria over a planning horizon (typically 10 to 20 years) is becoming no more valid in competitive market environments. Therefore, it requires to develop a new methodology for generation investments, which is applicable to the changed electric industry business environments and is able to address the post-privatization situation where individual generation firms seek to maximize their return on generation investments against uncertain market revenues. This paper formulates a new generation expansion planning problem and solve it in a market-oriented manner.

  • The power expansion planning is large and capital intensive capacity planning. In the past the expansion planning was established with the proper supply reliability in order to minimize social cost. However, the planning not used cost minimizing objective function in the power markets with many market participants. This paper proposed the power expansion planning process in the power markets. This system is composed of Regulator and GENCO's model. Regulator model used multi-criteria decision making rule. GENCO model is very complex problem. Thus, this system transacted the part by several scenario assuming GENCO model.

  • A mathematical model for long-rage water supply planning was formulated as a dynamic plant location problem with network arc capacity expansion, and illustative example was presented. The proposed solution procedure identifies economical construction timings of surface water supply facilities and water conveyence systems and the best water supply operating patterns as well. In this study, we present a heuristic solution procedure using Simulated annealing Method in conjunction with Bertsekas & Tseng's RELAXT-II for the 0-1 integer network problem.

  • The failure of expansion joint for bridge is generally occurred on the non-shrinkage mortar and other problem is the release of anchors in expansion joint due to the impact and vibration during the driven car on the bridge. In this study, to overcome the failure of expansion joint by the failure of non-shrinkage, the elastomeric mortar is developed. The pull-out capacity developed elastomeric mortar compared with that of non-shrinkage mortar. Moreover the anchor system which can be change easily and prevent a fracture of expansion joint is developed.

  • This study deals with capacity expansion planning of airport infrastructure in view of economic validation that reflect construction costs and social benefits according to the reduction of passengers' delay time. We first forecast the airport peak-demand which has a seasonal and cyclical feature with ARIMA model that has been one of the most widely used linear models in time series forecasting. A discrete event simulation model is built for estimating actual delay time of passengers that consider the passenger's dynamic flow within airport infrastructure after arriving at the airport. With the trade-off relationship between cost and benefit, we determine an economic quantity of conveyor that will be expanded. Through the experiment performed with the case study of Incheon international airport, we demonstrate that our approach can be an effective method to solve the airport expansion problem with seasonal passenger arrival and dynamic operational aspects in airport infrastructure.

  • Until recently as a method of repairing leaking problem, generally urethane series were used for many structures as subway, box culvert etc. However the lacking of sufficient penetration capacity have made it difficult to repair such structures completely. Now, we could achieve enhanced quality of repairing work by using new material which was compounded of urethane series and cement series properly. This material can penetrate concrete structure efficiently and move interactively with the structure in case of the thermal expansion. Besides of this, we could prevent expecting leakage through several improvements on the aspects of design, materials and site implementation.

  • This paper presents a new airport slot allocation model that uses AIP model to balance the use of airport slots within existing capacity based on the limitation of capacity expansion of airport slots. This new model is called a 'balanced airport slot allocation model', which integrates the airport facility usage system, which is applied independently without linkage, with the airport slot allocation system, introducing the market logical characteristic of 'administered incentive pricing. In this paper, we propose a new proposal to dramatically change the airport slot allocation system in the current situation where the expansion of facilities is limited in the urgent problem of the airport slot shortage, and it is necessary to balance the airport slot allocation. Airline paying for the use of an airport slot can determine the slot of the desired time slot based on the costs incurred by differentiating in the new airport slot allocation model. This is a system that allows the airlines that are willing to pay a lot of money in the market to use preferred airport slots.

  • Recently silicon has attracted intense interest as a promising anode material of lithium-ion batteries due to its extremely high capacity of 4200 mA/g (for Li4.2Si) that is much higher than 372 mAh/g (for LiC6) of graphite. However, it seriously suffers from large volume change (even up to 300%) of the electrode upon lithiation, leading to its pulverization or mechanical failure during lithiation/delithiation processes and the rapid capacity fading. To overcome this problem, Si nanowires have been considered. Use of such Si nanowires provides their facile relaxation during lithiation/delithiation without mechanical breaking. To design better Si electrodes, a study to unveil atomic-scale mechanisms involving the volume expansion and the phase transformation upon lithiation is critical. In order to investigate the lithiation mechanism in Si nanowires, we have developed a reactive force field (ReaxFF) for Si-Li systems based on density functional theory calculations. The ReaxFF method provides a highly transferable simulation method for atomistic scale simulation on chemical reactions at the nanosecond and nanometer scale. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with the ReaxFF reproduces well experimental anisotropic volume expansion of Si nanowires during lithiation and diffusion behaviors of lithium atoms, indicating that it would be definitely helpful to investigate lithiation mechanism of Si electrodes and then design new Si electrodes.

  • Due to extreme urbanization, ground transportation in the city center is saturated, and problems such as the lack of expansion infrastructure and traffic congestion increase social costs. To solve this problem, a 3D mobility platform, Urban Air Mobility (UAM), has emerged as a new alternative. A vertiport is a physical space that conducts a similar role to an airport terminal. Vertiport consists of take-off and landing facilities (TLOF, Touchdown and Lift-Off area), space for boarding and disembarking from UAM aircraft (gates), taxiways, and passenger terminals. The type of vertiport (structure, number of facilities) and concept of operations are key variables that determine the number of UAM aircraft that can be accommodated per hour. In this study, a capacity calculation method was presented using an optimization technique (Deterministic Integer Linear Programming). The absolute capacity of the vertiport was calculated using an optimization technique, and a sensitivity analysis was also performed.
