  • As the portable electronic equipments are developed and popularized, the batteies are more important. To prolong life of the equipments, engineers demand to have batteries of high-power density and they are used to use Li-ion batteries popularly Li-ion batteries are better than conventional batteries, Ni-cd, about power density per volume and weight, but they have a fault that discharge voltage of them goes down. In order to maximize life of the Li-ion batterries, we have to use a converter which is suitable for the characteristic of Li-ion batteries. Therefore, capacitive idling SEPIC(Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter) that is derived from the SEPIC topology is proposed as a source of the Portable low-power applications. The converter has characteristics of buck-boost porformance. Besides, that makes it possible to increase the switching frequency by partial soft commutation of power switches through adding a diode and a switch. This paper is presented the characteristics, DC voltage conversion ratio, circuits of operation modes, of the converter and it is analized and implemented.

  • A 12-bit 750 kS/s Dual-Sampling Successive Approximation Register Analog-to-Digital Converter (SAR ADC) technique with reduced Capacitive DAC (CDAC) is presented in this paper. By adopting the Adaptive Power Control (APC) technique for the two-stage latched type comparator and using bootstrap switch, power consumption can be reduced and overall system efficiency can be optimized. Bootstrapped switches also are used to enhance the sampling linearity at a high input frequency. The proposed SAR ADC reduces the average switching energy compared with conventional SAR ADC by adopting reduced the Most Significant Bit (MSB) cycling step with Dual-Sampling of the analog signal. This technique holds the signal at both comparator input asymmetrically in sample mode. Therefore, the MSB can be calculated without consuming any switching energy. The prototype SAR ADC was implemented in $0.18-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology and occupies $0.728mm^2$. The measurement results show the proposed ADC achieves an Effective Number-of-Bits (ENOB) of 10.73 at a sampling frequency of 750 kS/s and clock frequency of 25 MHz. It consumes only 0.13 mW from a 5.0-V supply and achieves the INL and DNL of +2.78/-2.45 LSB and +0.36/-0.73 LSB respectively, SINAD of 66.35 dB, and a Figures-of-Merit (FoM) of a 102 fJ/conversion-step.

  • An efficient sustain driver and a useful reset circuit composition technique are proposed for plasma display panel drive. The proposed sustain driver uses a series resonance between an external inductor and a panel to recover the energy dissipated by a capacitive displacement current of PDP. It consists of four switching devices, an inductor, and external capacitors, which supply sustain voltage sources. Although the amplitude of an input voltage source is twice as high as that of conventional sustain drivers, average voltage stress imposed on power switching devices is nearly same in their values. Moreover, the input voltage source can be directly applied for the use of a reset voltage source. Owing to this scheme, the proposed sustain driver and the embedded reset circuit have a simple configuration. The operational principle and design example are given with theoretical analyses. The validity of the proposed drive system is verified through experiments using a prototype equipped with a 7.5-inch-diagonal AC plasma display panel.

  • Conventional wireless power transfer methods based on coupled magnetic fields need a complex winding structure on the surface of the energy transfer and shows poor efficiency near metal objects due to the eddy current effect. In this study, to mitigate these problems, we investigate an electric field-coupled power transmission system, which is less prone to metal object problems and EMI. Because of the fundamental physical limit in the size of link capacitances, a half-bridge converter with an impedance matching transformer is proposed and the design procedure is derived to provide a soft-switching scheme. Hardware implementation shows that the proposed scheme with a pair of 10cm by 10cm copper plate can power a 1.4W USB FAN in a separation of 0.2mm by using insulating paper when driven by 227 kHz gate pulse.

  • In this paper we present a Capacitor Charging Power Supply (CCPS) using a series-resonant three-level inverter topology to improve voltage regulation and use semiconductor switches having low blocking voltage capability such as MOSFETs. This inverter can be operated with two modes, Full Power Mode (FPM) and Half Power Mode (HPM). In FPM inverter supplies the high frequency step up transformer with full DC-link voltage and in HPM with half DC-link voltage. HPM switching method will be adopted when CCPS output voltage reaches the preset target value and operates in refresh mode-charge is maintained on the capacitor. In this topology each semiconductor devices blocks a half of the DC-link voltage[2]. A 15kW, 30kV CCPS has been built and will be tested for an electric precipitator application. The CCPS operates from an input voltage of 500VDC and has a variable output voltage between 10 to 30kV and 1kHz repetition rate at 44nF capacitive load [3]. A resonant frequency of 67.9kHz was selected and a voltage regulation of $0.83\%$ has been achieved through the use of half power mode without using the forced cut off the switch current [1]. The theory of operation, circuit topology and test results are given.

  • This paper presents a novel shunt radio frequency microelectromechanical system switch on a quartz substrate with stiff ribs around the membrane. The buckling effects in the switch membrane and stiction problem are the primary concerns with RF MEMS switches. These effects can be reduced by the proposed design approach due to the stiffness of the ribs around the membrane. A lower mass of the beam and a reduction in the squeeze film damping is achieved due to the slots and holes in the membrane, which further aid in attaining high switching speeds. The proposed switch is optimized to operate in the k-band, which results in a high isolation of -40 dB and low insertion loss of -0.047 dB at 21 GHz, with a low actuation voltage of only 14.6 V needed for the operation the switch. The membrane does not bend with this membrane design approach. Finite element modeling is used to analyze the stress and pull-in voltage.

  • The conventional phase-shifted full-bridge (PSFB) converter with an LC filter has been widely used for high-power applications of over 1.0 kW. However, the PSFB converter cannot obtain optimal power conversion efficiency during the battery charging in electric vehicle (EV) on-board battery charger applications because of its unique drawbacks, such as a large circulating current and very high voltage stress in the rectifier diodes. As a result, the converters with a capacitive filter, such as LLC resonant converters, replace the PSFB converter in the EV chargers. This study analyzes the problems of the PSFB converter for EV on-board charger applications in detail. Moreover, the newest converters based on the conventional PSFB converter are reviewed. On the basis of the reviews, new PSFB converter topologies are proposed for EV charger applications. The new topologies are formed by connecting the rectifier stage in the PSFB converter with the output of an LLC resonant converter in series. Many problems of the conventional PSFB converter for EV charger applications can be solved and the performance can be more improved because of this structure; this idea is confirmed by an experiment consisting of prototype battery chargers under the output voltage range of 250-450 Vdc at 3.3 kW.

  • Surge protective devices(SPDs) are widely used as a most effective means protecting the electrical and electronic equipment against overvoltages such as lightning and switching surges. When installing SPDs, it is essential that the voltage protection level provided by SPDs should be lower than the withstand voltage of the equipment being protected. But even the proper selection of SPDs are achieved, the voltage at the equipment terminal may be higher than the residual voltage of SPD due to the reflection and oscillation phenomena. This paper was focused on the investigations of the conditions for which the equipment is protected by an SPD taking into account the influences of the protective distance and type of load. The protective effects of SPD with voltage-limiting component were analyzed as functions of types of load and protective distance between the SPD and load. As a result, in the cases of long protective distances, capacitive loads and loads with high resistance, the voltage at the load terminal was significantly higher than the residual voltage of SPD. It was found that the proper installation of SPDs should be carried out by taking into account the protective distance and type of load to achieve reliable protection of electronic equipments against surges.
