Suppression of Leakage Current and Distortion in Variable Capacitance Devices and their Application to AC Power Regulators

  • The quantity of alternating current (AC) leakage and the value of distortion factor in capacitor currents are discussed with regard to a new power component called variable capacitance device (VCD). This component has terminals for controlling its capacitance. Nonlinear dielectric characteristics are utilized in this device to vary the capacitance. When VCD operates in an AC circuit, the AC leakage from this device through direct current (DC) control voltage source increases according to the conditions of DC control voltage and so on. To solve this problem, we propose techniques for suppressing AC leakage. Although VCD has strong nonlinear characteristics, the current through the capacitor is not distorted significantly. The relations between AC leakage and the distortion in current waveforms are investigated. An application example for an AC power regulator is also introduced to evaluate the distortion in waveforms.

  • 기판과의 동시소성에 의한 고주파 MCM-C(Multi-Chip-Module-Cofired)용 저항을 제작하고 6 GHz 까지의 RF 특성을 측정하였다. 기판은 저온 소성용 기판으로서 총 8층으로 구성하였으며, 7층에 저항체 및 전극을 인쇄하고 Via를 통하여 기판의 최상부까지 연결되도록 하였다 저항체 Pastes, 저항체의 크기, Via의 길이 변화에 따라서 저항의 RF 특성은 고주파일수록 더욱 DC 저항값에서부터 변화되는 양상을 보였다. 내부저항의 등가회로를 구현한 결과, 저항은 전송선로, Capacitance 성분이 혼재되어 있는 것으로 나타났으며 전극의 형태에 따라 Capacitance 성분이 많은 차이를 나타내었다.

A Study on the Equivalent Model of an External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp Based on Equivalent Resistance and Capacitance Variation

  • An External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp (EEFL) has longer lifespan, higher power efficiency and higher luminance than a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL). Moreover, it is easy to drive them in parallel. Therefore, the EEFL is expected to quickly replace the CCFL in LCD backlight systems. However, the EEFL has more complex characteristics than the CCFL with a resistive component, because it has both a resistive component by plasma and a capacitive component by external electrode. In this paper, values of resistance and capacitance are measured at several power levels and at several operating frequencies. They are expressed by a numeral formula based on a linear approximation that represents the equivalent resistance and capacitance as a function of power. Then we made block diagram of the equivalent circuit model using numerical expressions. Simulation waveforms and experimental results are presented to verify the feasibility of the equivalent model.

  • The base-collector capacitance of an npn bipolar transistor in bipolar or BiCMOS technology has significant influence on the switching performances, and comprises pnjunction component and MOS component. Both components have complicated dependences on the isolation oxide structure, epitaxial doping density, and bias voltage. Analytical/empirical formulas for both components are derived in this paper for a generic isolation structure as a function of epitaxial doping density and bias voltage based on some theoretical understanding and two-dimensional device simulations. These formulas are useful in estimating the effect of device isoation schemes on the switching speed of bipolar transistors.

  • MLCC (Multi-layer Ceramic Capacitor) is the most important passive component in electronic devices such as HHP, PC and digital display. The development trend of MLCC is a miniaturization with increasing the capacitance. In this paper, a development history of the high capacitance MLCC in Korea was introduced, and the necessity of the finer $BaTiO_3$ was explained in the viewpoint of the issued electrical and dielectric properties of high capacitance MLCC. The bottleneck technologies to realize the high capacitance was shortly introduced, followed by the prediction of the development trend of MLCC in near future.

  • In order to improve the reliability and the stability of static power conversion system, further to optimize the operational characteristics of the system, it is very important to investigate the effects (output and switching component characteristics) of each parameters in the system. Therefore this paper particualrly deals with the characteristics of a novel ZVS multi-resonant conversion system to duty cycle, resonant capacitance, resonant inductance, and output capacitance. The results show that resonant inductance and output capacitance are dominat factors in the system.

A Study on Measuring Electrical Capacitance to Access the Volumetric Water Content of Simulated Soil

  • Wet porous media representing agronomic soil that contains variable water content with variable electrolyte concentration was measured to study the shape of the curves of the electric double layer capacitance versus frequency (from 10 KHz to 10 MHz. This was done in an attempt to find the lowest practical operating frequency for developing low cost dielectric constant soil moisture probes. Cellulose sponge was used as the porous media. A high frequency electronic bridge circuit was developed for measuring the equivalent network parallel resistance and capacitance of porous media. It appears that the effects of the electric double layer component of the total parallel network capacitance essentially disappear at operating frequencies greater than approximately 25 MHz at low electrolyte concentrations but are still important at 50 MHz at higher concentrations. At these frequencies, the double layer capacitance masks the diffusion region capacitance where true water content capacitance values reside. The general shape of the curve of volumetric water content versus porous media dielectric constant is presented, with an empirical equation representing data for this type of curve. It was concluded that the lowest frequency where dielectric constant values which represent true water content information will most likely be found is between 30 and 50 MHz at low electrolyte concentrations but may be above 50 MHz when the total electrolyte concentration is near the upper level required for most mesophyte plant nutrition.

Analysis of pulsed Plasma Reactor using Modelling Method (펄스플라즈마 반응기의 모델링에 의한 해석)

  • The pulsed plasma wire-plate reactor was analyzed on the basis of experiment, EMTP simulation and modelling method. Though the reactor has a non-linear impedance characteristics, we demonstrate that the reactor impedance can be approximately analyzed with the measured initial capacitance and average resistive component of flat zone. Using this modelling method, the influence of the reactor capacitance on the impedance matching between pulse generator and reactor can be investigated. From this, we found that the energy of 95% was delivered form pulse generator to reactor at the ratio of $C_r/C_p\cong 0.3,\; where\; C_p\; is\; pulse\; generator\; capacitance, C_r$ is reactor capacitance.

  • This study considers the design of a submodule test circuit for the modular multi-level converter (MMC)-based HVDC systems. A novel submodule test circuit is proposed to provide not only an AC but also a DC component to the submodule current. However, the current waveforms depend on the capacitor voltages. Therefore, determining the capacitance value of the test circuit is important. Finding a proper capacitance value is easy when the proposed analysis method is used. Simulation and experimental results show the usefulness of the proposed method.

Analysis for the Ferroresonance on the Transformer by Overvoltage and Prevention Measures (과전압에 의한 변압기 철공진 분석 및 방지대책)

  • Ferroresonance is a non-linear vibrational phenomenon that is generated by the electrical interaction of the inductance component with the capacitor component of a certain capacitance as the device of the inductance component such as a transformer is saturated due to the degradation, the waveform distortion of current and voltage, and the oscillation of overcurrent and overvoltage in a system. Recently, ferroresonance was generated from the waveform distortion of current and voltage, or the overvoltage or undervoltage phenomenon caused by the nature of an electrical power system and design technology of the transformer in the three phase transformer system. Hence, in general, ferroresonance analyzed by converting to the LC equivalent circuit. However, in general, the aforementioned analytical method only applies to the resonance phenomenon that is generated by the interaction of the capacitance of bussbar and grounding, and switching as the capacitor component with PT and the transformer as the inductance component in a system. Subsequently, the condition where ferroresonance was generated since overvoltage was supplied as line voltage to the phase voltage and thus the iron core is saturated due to the interconnection between grounded and ungrounded systems could not be analyzed when single phase PT was connected in a ${\Delta}$/Y connection system. In this study, voltage swell in the configuration of grounded circuit of a step-up transformer with the ${\Delta}-{\Delta}$ connection linked to PT for control power and the ferroresonance generated by overvoltage when the line voltage of the ${\Delta}-{\Delta}$ connection was connected to the phase voltage of the grounded Y-Y connection were analyzed using PSCAD / EMTDC through the failure case of the transformer caused by ferroresonance in the system with the ${\Delta}-{\Delta}$/Y-Y connection, and subsequently, the preventive measure of ferroresonance was proposed.
