Fungal infections of the spine are relatively uncommon. Moreover, cervical spondylodiscitis due to Candida albicans in non-immunocompromised patient is very rare. We report a case of Candida spondylodiscitis in a 64-year-old woman who complained of neck pain. The clinical feature and treatment option are presented with a review of pertinent literatures.
In the present study, whether squalene treatment relives inflammatory reactions induced by Candida albicans was checked. The experiment was conducted in vivo using seven experimental animals (ICR mice) per experimental group. Among C. albicans-induced inflammatory factors, TNF-${\alpha}$, IL-6, and NO were observed using the ELISA kits method. Through the experiment, the following conclusions were obtained. 1. In the group infected with C. albicans, it could be identified that squalene treatment was inducing NO generation in renal tissues both on the 1st and 3rd days (p < 0.05). 2. In the group pre-treated(intraperitoneal administration) with SQ (80ml/kg) once per day for seven days and infected with C. albicans, it could be identified that squalene treatment was inducing TNF-${\alpha}$ generation in renal tissues only on the 3rd day(p < 0.05). 3. In the group pre-treated(intraperitoneal administration) with SQ (80ml/kg) once per day for seven days and infected with C. albicans, it could be identified that squalene treatment was inducing IL-6 generation in renal tissues only on the 3rd day(p < 0.05). In conclusion, it could be seen that for squalene to suppress C. albicans-induced inflammatory factors, preemptively supplying SQ should be effective. Therefore, effects for recovery from C. albicans-induced immunodepression can be expected from SQ treatment.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and immunodiffusion method were used for the species differentiation of yeasts, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida utils, Candida tropicalis, and Kleuyveromyces fragilis. Comparing the electrophoretic patterns of soluble and membrane proteins, Saccharomyces cereνisiae was similar to Candida utilis but was different from Candida tropicalis and Kleuyveromyces fragilis. In immunochemical properties of soluble proteins, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was almost identical with Candido utilis. However, Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Candida utilis was quite different from Candida tropicalis and Kleuyveromyces fragilis in their immunoreactivities. In immunochemical properties of membrane proteins, almost the same results were obtained irrespective of four yeast species. By using SDS-PAGE and immunodiffusion methods, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida utilis were difficult to differentiate but both species were easily differentiated from Candida tropicalis and Kleuyveromyces fragilis.
This study focused on the isolation of wild yeasts from the soils of an herb park in Seoul, Korea, and characterization of unrecorded yeasts. Fifteen yeast strains of nine species were isolated and identified. Among them, strains of the Cryptococcus genus, such as Cryptococcus laurentii (2 strains), Cryptococcus saitoi (two strains), Cryptococcus podzolicus (2 strains), and Cryptococcus sp. (2 strains) were dominant. Candida boleticola SU14-2, Candida novakii SU6-2 and Cryptococcus podzolicus SU18-3 were also screened as newly recorded yeasts in Korea. Candida novakii SU6-2 formed ascospores and a pseudomycelium, and Candida boleticola SU14-2 grew well in the 5% NaCl-containing yeast extract-peptone-dextrose medium.
In order to investigate the diversity of yeasts from major rivers (the Daejeoncheon, Gapcheon and Yudeungcheon) located in Daejeon city, we isolated wild yeasts by plating diluents of samples collected during the summer and winter of 2016 onto yeast extract-peptone-dextrose (YPD) medium, then identified them using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) analysis to compare the nucleotide sequences of the PCR amplicons for the D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA. In total, we isolated 191 yeast strains belonging to 104 species from 148 soil or water samples from the rivers and their junctions. Candida spp. (45 strains) including Candida tropicalis (22 strains) were the most abundantly isolated strains from the Daejeoncheon. Candida spp. (16 strains) including Candida vartiovaarae (8 strains) and Candida spp. (18 strains) such as Candida sake (4 strains) were also the dominant isolates from the Gapcheon and Yudeungcheon, respectively. In conclusion, Candida spp. and Cryptococcus spp. were the most dominant strains, corresponding to 42% and 7% of the 191 yeast strains isolated in this study, respectively.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the transmission of candida in denture by dental polishing lathe. Materials and Methods: Maxillary complete dentures made from the same model were infected with Candida albicans. The infected dentures were polished by dental polishing lathe with sterile pumice and distilled water. And then sterile maxillary complete dentures were polished with same method. Polishing surface was wiped with a cotton swab and the sample was checked for Candida albicans. The polishing wheel at room temperature was checked for Candida albicans every 24 hours for 3 days. Results: A considerable number of Candida was found on the polished sterile dentures. And the Candida albicans in polishing wheel was detected at up to two days. Conclusion: An anti-infection measure is urgently needed when dental polishing lathe is used for denture polishing, because of the possibility of fungal infection.
From September to November 1967, Isolation of Candida species from oral cabity was attempted with 270 cases who made visit at outpatient Oral Surgery Department at Soo Do Military Hospital.
1. Out of 270, yeast like organisms were isolated in 108 cases.
2. Among these yeast like organism, 87 proved to be candida species and 21 to be undetermined group.
3. Eighty seven Candida species are consisted of 26 of C. albicans, 31 of C. krusei, 6 of C. Stellatoidea, 9 of C. tropicalis, 4 of C. guilliermondii, 6 of C. parapsilosis. and 5 of C. Pseudotropicalis.
On the basis of high-osmotic tolerance and xylitol productivity, it was isolated a novel strain from soil of rice field. An isolated strain was tentatively designated as Candida sp. HY200, deduced from the systematic approaches of bacterial identification by Biolog $Microlog^{TM}$ and, revealed an interesting ability of flocculation during the cultivation. With respect to the osmotic-tolerance and flocculation ability, experiment was carried out to investigate the production of xylitol in high xylose concentration. When xylose concentration was 260 g/L, it was obtained 205 g/L xylitol with 79% of yield and 2.14 g/L ${\cdot}$ h of productivity Consequently, We convinced that Candida sp. HY200 stands a very favorable comparison with C. tropicalis.
Invasive Candida infections (ICI) have become the third most common cause of late-onset infection among premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Risk factors include birth weight less than 1,000 g, exposure to more than two antimicrobials, third generation cephalosporin exposure, parenteral nutrition including lipid emulsion, central venous catheter, and abdominal surgery. Candida colonization of the skin and gastrointestinal tract is an important first step in the pathogenesis of invasive disease. Strict infection control measures against the infection should be done in the NICU. The following practices are likely to contribute to reducing the rate of ICI: (1) restriction of broad-spectrum antibiotics, antacids and steroid; (2) introduction of early feeding and promoting breast milk. Fluconazole prophylaxis may be an effective control measure to prevent Candida colonization and infections in individual units with high incidence of fungal infection. In addition, there is a need of further data including the development of resistant strains and the effect on long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of infants exposed to drugs before the initiation of routine application of antifungal prophylaxis in the NICU.

To search and develop the compounds exhibiting antifungal activities against the mycelial phase of Candida albicans, approximately 2,900 microorganisms isolated from soil were examined for antifungal activity. Among them, a strain with preferential activity against the mycelial phase of Candida albicans was isolated and identified as Streptomyces sp. A393. Isolation and purification of compounds A393 showing antifungal activity against the mycelial phase of C. albicans were performed using XAD-7 column chromatography, silica gel chromatography, preparative thin- layer silica gel chromatography, and HPLC. The molecular weights of compounds isolated from Streptomyces sp. A393 were determined as 774, 790, 804 and 820. These compounds appeared to have a structure of macrolide antibiotics, oligomycin A, B, C and E. Especially, oligomycin E, which is formerly reported to have no antifungal activity, showed antifungal activity against the mycelial phase of Candida albicans.
