  • Some of geologists in Korea recently postlated that Okchon system previously known to be precambrian age was the metamorphosed sediments of post-Chosen (Ordovician and pre-Kyeongsang (late Jurassic to Cretaceous) periods, or even definitely of Triassic period simply on the basis of the fact that Okcheon system overlies the Great Limestone series of Chosen system of Camber-ordovician age, and of other few assumptions of minor importance. As a result of such correlation, thick series of metasediments and Okcheon system of unknown age were established in this particular region and vaguely correlated to Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments. Recent study done by the author reveled that: 1) only the upper Okcheon bed of S. Nakamura was true Okcheon system, and the middle and lower Okcheon beds were excluded, because they were correlated to Cambrian and Permian sediments resfectively, 2) Sangnaeri, Seochangri, and rengam formations of unknown age, and Baekhwasan, Jobong, and Ihwaryeong formations of Okcheon system of also unknown age were the metamorphosed Yangdeok system of Cambrian age, all of these formations were differentiated by the previous workers and were equivalent to the middle Okcheon system of S. Nakamure, and. 3) These metamorphosed Yangdeok system overlaid apparently the Great Limestone series in forms of overthrust and klippe which were produced by the orogeny took place during post-Daedong and pre-Kyeongsang period (probably middle to the Jurassic). The Sobaeksan Range, folded mountain Chains was also formed by this orogeny. Thus, Okcheon system newly defined by the author is precambrain age and consists in ascending order of Kemyenogsan, Hyangsan dolomite, and Daehangsan quartzite formation which were previously classified into metasediments of unknown age, and Munjuri, and Hwangkanri, formations which were differentiated into Okcheon system unknown age by the previous workers, but are of reversed sequence. Myeongori and Bukrori formations of Okcheon System are regard by the author as part of Hwangkanri formation. Few other assumption of minor important taken by the previous workers as their positive evidences are carefully explained that they were misinterpreted.

  • The carbonate flat pebble conglomerates (CFPC) are interbedded as lenticular bed in the greenish rhythmite of the upper part of $Hwaj{\check{o}}l$ Formation, $Jos{\check{o}}n$ Supergroup. Pebbles are composed mainly of lime-mudstone with small amounts of bioclasts and silt-sized subangular quartz grains. The matrix among pebbles is composed mainly of sparry calcite with relatively much amounts of bioclasts, silt-sized subangular quartz grains and authigenic pyrite crystals or grains. The sparry calcite of the matrix seems to be the results of neomorphism of skeletal sands and bioclasts. The pebbles are well rounded and no plastic deformations are found. Some pebbles show the outer rim of glauconite. CFPC are not associated with any other intertidal features such as stromatolites, flaser bedding and channel structures. Also any features indicative of subaerial exposure such as dessication cracks, fenestrae and so on are not found in the bed. The sedimentological features of CFPC suggest that the following conditions appear to have been necessary for the formation of CFPC : 1) episodic deposition of thin, permeable calcareous beds separated argillaceous beds; 2) preservation of these beds near the sediment-water interface where they could become rapidly cemented; 3) erosion and redeposition of the partially lithified beds by storms or other exceptional erosional events. Eventually storm erosion and redeposition together represent only one of several critical conditions in the genesis of CFPC. The CFPC are very common in Cambrian and lower Ordovician formations, and become very rare in the younger carbonate formations. The expansion of infauna after Ordovician Period eliminated the widespread potential for rapid submarine cementation which is one of the critical factors to form CFPC.

  • The area studied is a southwestern part of Okcheon geosynclinal zone which streches diagonally across the Korean peninsula in the mid-central parts of South Korea, and is bounded by Charyeong mountain chains in the north and by Sobaek mountain chains in the south. The general trend of the zone is of NE-SW direction known as Sinian direction. Okcheon system of pre-Cambrian age occupies southwestern portion of Okcheon geosynclinal zone, and Choseon and Pyeongan systems of Cambrian to Triassic age in northeastern portion of the zone. It was defined by the writer that the former was called "Okcheon Paleogeosynclinal zone" and the latter "Okcheon Neogeosynclinal zone," although T. Kobayashi named them "Metamorphosed Okcheon zone" and "Non-metamorphosed Okcheon zone" respectively and thought that sedimentary formations in both zones were same in origin and of Paleozonic age, and C.M. Son also described that Okchon system was of post-Choseon (Ordovician) and pre-Kyeongsang (Cretaceous) in age. According to the present study two zones are separated by great fault so that the geology in both zones is not only entirely different in origin and age, but also their geolosical structures are discontinuous. Stratigraphy and structure of Okcheon system are clearly established and defined by the writer and its age is definitely pre-Cambrian. It is clarified by present study that the meta-sediments in and at vicinity of Charyeong mountain chains are correlated to Weonnam series of pre-Cambrian age which occupies and continues from northeast to southwest in and at south of Sobaek mountain chains, and both metasediments constitute basement of Okcheon system. Pyeongan, Daedong and Kyeongsang systems were deposited in few narrow intermontain basins in Okcheon paleogeosynclinal zone after it was emerged at the end of Carboniferous period. Granites of Jurassic and Cretaceous ages and volcanics of Cretaceous age are cropped out in the zone. Jurassic granite is aligned generally with the trend of Okcheon geosynclinal zone, whereas Cretaceous granite lacks of trend in distribution. Many isoclinal folds and thrust faults caused by Taebo orogeny at the end of Jurassic period are also parallel with Sinian directieon and dip steeply to northwest. Charyeong, Noryeong, Sobaek, and Deogyu mountain chains are located in areas of anticlinorium, and Kyongsang system in narrow synclinal zones. Folds in Okcheon neogeosynclinal zone are generally of N 70-80W direction but deviate to Sinian direction at the western parts of the zone. This phenomena is interpreted by the fact that the folds were originated by Songrim disturbance at the end of Triassic period and later partly modified by Taebo orogeny. Thrust faults of Taebo orogeny coentinue from Okcheon paleogeosynclinal zone into neogeosynclinal zone, forming imbricated structure as previously described. Strike-slip faults perpendicular to Sinian direction and shear faults diagonally across it by 55 degrees also prevail in neogeosynclinal zone. It is concluded from viewpoints on geology and geological structure that l)Okchon geosyncline had changed its location and affected by numerous disturbances through geologic time, and 2)mountain chains in the area such as Charyeong, Noryeong, Sobaek, and Deogyu were originated as folded mountains. Differing from others, however, Sobaek range was probably formed at the time of Songrim disturbance and modified later by Taebo orogeny. It is cut by Danyang-Jeomchon fault at the vicinity of Joryeong near Munkyeong village and does not continue to southwest beyond the fault, whereas southwestern portion of erstwhile Sobaek range continues to Taebaek rangd northeastward from Deogyusan passing through Sangju, Yecheon, and Andong. From these evidences, the writer has newly defined the erstwhile Sobaek range in such a way that Sobaek range is restricted only to northeastern portion and Deogyu range is named for the southwestern portion of previous Bobaek range.

  • The amount of granite distribution area occupies about 40 - 50% of Korean Peninsula. The granite irregularly Intruded through preCambrian to Tertiary times but in Jurassic time so called, Daebo granite most widely crops out in Korean Peninsula. In addition to Bulkuksa Grante which intruded at Cretaceous time crops out at the southern part of Korean Peninsula and in northern part Triassic Songrim Granite is distributed. These granites have equigranular texture and are relatively isotropic. Their uniaxial compressive strength is above $1,500kg/cm^2$ and also seismic velocity is over 2,000m/sec. When these rocks receive a weathering action, the feldspar weathers first and the quartz grains remain plentifully to make the "Masato(Korean name)". Also when the granite receives a weathering action, quite often it make sheeting joint which is topographically parallel to the earth surface and also make a (so called, onion structure. These weathering phenomena easily make a land sliding when it is heavy rain and weathering surface is irregular.

  • The Yeonhwa Lead and Zinc Mine is located in northern part of Kyeongsang-Buk-Do, Korea, and is economically most important mine because it produces most part of the output of lead and zinc minerals in the country. Ore deposits of the mine are localized in the Pungchon Formation and several limestone seams of upper Myobong Formation in Cambrian Age. Ore solution ascended along the fractures of N-S, NE-SW or NW-SE trends and along slate and limestone boundary, and then replaced selectively limestone to make ore bodies. Skarn minerals are consisted of hedenbergite, diopside, and main sulfide mineral orebodies are composed of galena, zincblende, pyrrhotite, pyrite and a minor amounts of arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite. Metal ratio, ${\rho}_{Pb}={\frac{Pb(%)}{Pb(%)+Zn(%)}}{\times}100$, illustrates the zona I arrangements of some ore bodies. It will be inferred the flow trending of ore solution and the process reaction with adjacent country rocks. The sub-divided formations of the Pungchon limestone and Myobong slate are very useful as a criteria for detecting probable ore location. Rhodochrosite veins are good evidence for searching of ore location, especially on Pb-rich ore bodies.

  • In the last ten years, marine geological and geophysical survey and research were conducted by Japanese, Russian and American scientists in the East Sea of Korea (Japan Sea). Many research results were published. However, regional research of the geology of the continental margin of the Korean Peninsula was not conducted. This study has made on attempt to classify submarine strata and stratigraphic boundaries. The study has revealed characters of submarine geology and structure. Isopach maps of each identified stratigraphic unit have been constructed as the results of this study. The study was conducted on the basis of analyses of marine seismic surveys carried out in the continental margin of the East Sea between Kangneung and Pohang. Three depositional basins were identified in the study area and they were named as, Mukho Basin, Hupo Basin and Pohang Basin. The Mukho Basin is developed in continental slope and shelf in the area between Kangneung and Samcheog. Quaternary and Pliocene sediments attain a maximum thickness of 900 m. Basement rocks are interpreted as granite and gneiss. They are correlated with granite-gneiss of the Taebaecksan Series of Pre-cambrian age and the Daebo granite of Jurassic age. The Hupo Basin is developed in the continental shelf between Uljin and Youngdeok. Quaternary and Pliocene sediments attain a maximum thickness of 600 m. Basement rocks were interpreted as granite and gneiss and they are correlated with metamorphic rocks of Pre-cambrian age and the Daebo granites, comprising the Ryongnam Massif. The Pohang Basin is developed in the area between Pohang and Gangu. This basin contains Miocene and older sediments. Basement rocks are not shown. Many faults are developed within the continental shelf and slope. These faults strike parallel with the coast line. A north-south direction is predominant in the southern study area. However, in the northern study area the faults strike north, and north-west. The faults are parallel to each other and are step faults down-thrown to the east or west, forming horst and graben structures which develop into sedimentary basins. Such faults caused the development of submarine banks along the boundary between the continental shelf and slope. This bank has acted as a barrier for deposition in the Hupo Basin. Paleozoic sedimentary rocks distributed widely in the adjacent land area are absent in the Mukho Basin. This suggests that the area of the basin was situated above the sea level until the Pliocene time. The study area contains Pliocene sediments in general. These sediments overlie the basement complex composed of metamorphic rocks, granites, Cretaceous (Kyongsang System) sedimentary rocks and Miocene sedimentary rocks. These facts lead to a conclusion that the continental shelf and slope of the study area were developed as a result of displacements along faults oriented parallel to the present coast line in the post Miocene time.

  • The author aimed to describe the volcano-stratigraphy and petrology of the volcanic mass in the Koheung peninsula, South Cheolla province. The volcanic mass is composed of the volcanics and intrusives of late Cretaceous which extruded the Pre-cambrian metamorphic(Jirisan gneiss complex) and the early Cretaceous sedimentary(Duwon Formation) basement. The volcanic pile consists of, in ascending order, Bibongsan andesite, Koheung tuff and breccia, and Palyeongsan welded tuff, and are intruded by ring intrusives( intrusive breccia, andesite porphyry, intrusive rhyolite and fine-grained quartz-diorite) and central pluton(diorite, quartz monzodiorite, biotite granite and micrographic granite). Bibongsan andesite mainly consists of andesite tuff and lava. Koheung tuff consists of alternation of fine tuff, coarse tuff and lapilli tuff, and Palyeongsan welded tuff which overlies Koheung tuff, comprises K-feldspar and quartz phenocrysts, elongated brown fiamme, lithic fragments in matrix of devitrified brown glass shards, and mainly consists of rhyodacite to rhyolite vitric ash-flow tuff. The results of petrochemical studies of the igneous rocks suggest that the rocks were a serial differentiational products of fractional crystallization of calc-alkaline magma series. This study reveals that the volcanic mass in this area is inferred to the remnant of the resurgent cauldron, measuring 30 by 25 km in diameter. The cauldron block was lowered at least 1,000 m by ring fault displacement.
