  • As an early stage in the development of a water calorimeter, this study established a computer simulation methodology for analyzing the thermal behavior of a water calorimeter based on radiation transport and energy deposition. As a result, this study developed a method wherein the energy deposition distribution, which is obtained by applying Monte Carlo methods in water calorimeters, is directly used as a heat source for the thermal analysis model. Based on the proposed method, heat transfer in a water vessel and the effect of thermistor self-heating were analyzed. Through an analysis of the water velocities with and without a water vessel, it was found that a water vessel can serve as a convection barrier. Furthermore, it was confirmed that when considering thermistor self-heating, the water temperature change at the thermistor location is 0.219 mK higher compared to that when the thermistor was not considered. Therefore, thermistor self-heating must be considered to analyze the thermal behavior of a water calorimeter more accurately.

  • Nowadays in Korea, KS F 2271(Testing method for incombustibility of internal finish material and element of buildings) has been using for the evaluation of fire safety performance of sandwich panels. The test method in Japan and in Korea was based on the same way. When the Japanese standard building code was revised in 2000, the test method in the ISO 5660-1 was adopted for the test method for combustion performance of internal finishing materials and elements of buildings. According to this, the revision version of draft substituting the test method in the KS F 2271 for one in the ISO 5660-1(Cone Calorimeter method) is informed in Korea. In this study, combustion properties of sandwich panels were tested using the cone calorimeter method. Ignition time, peak heat release rate and total heat released of four sandwich panels and four core materials (thermal insulation material), which are widely used in Korea, were tested. Test results were analyzed for each specimen. Finally, test results were classified by Japanese standard building code and Canadian NBC revised.

  • Chemical behaviors of each surface material for interior facilities affect to fire initiation and growth in general fire situation. These chemical behaviors were characterized by thermal properties (Heat release rate, Pyrolysis rate, specific heat, etc) which could be derived from experimental test. Especially, Heat release rate which indicates aspect of fire size is one of the most important property to asses fire hazard and protection needs. The cone calorimeter test (ISO 5660) has recently assumed to a dominant role in bench scale fire testing to obtain the Heat release rate of materials. This value could be calculated by the 'Oxygen Consumption Method' under various producing irradiances to each surface of materials. In this study, Process of the cone calorimeter test was simulated by Pyrolysis model of FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator by NIST) base on the ISO 5660 international standard. Then, we could estimate the simulation method of FDS in case of single materials through the comparative study with test results.

  • This paper introduces a simple core loss calculation method for output filter inductor in pulse width modulation (PWM) DC-AC inverter. Amorphous C-core (AMCC-320) is used to analyze the core loss. In order to measure core loss of the output filter inductor and validate the proposed method, a single-phase half-bridge inverter and a calorimeter are used. By changing switching frequency and modulation index (MI) of the inverter, core loss of the AMCC-320 is measured with the lab-made calorimeter and the results are compared with calculated core loss. The proposed method can be easily extended to other core loss calculation of various converters.

  • Kinds of Sound & Thermal Insulator are being used for materials of railroad vehicles as a barrier of beat and noise. Glass Wool, PE foam, PP foam are such kinds of materials. In case of fire, it shows various combustion properties. In this study, we compared the Smoke Density of the Rubber Foam Insulator by test between Cone-Calorimeter and Smoke Density-Chamber. The results showed that the Rubber Foam Insulator had an important role in the insulator thickness and the test method, We forecast the smoke density by test between Cone-Calorimeter and Smoke Density-Chamber.

  • The rate of heat release is probably the single most important measure of fire hazard. Several tech-niques were developed for the measurement of rate of heat release, but were not suitable for fire test-ing purpose. Recently the application of oxygen consumption principle made it possible to development of well-characterized heat release rate measurement apparatus, the furniture calorimeter for large-scale fire tests and the cone calorimeter for bench-scale fire tests. The cone calorimeter can be used to determine the ignitability as well as heat release rate and smoke development, mass loss rate, combustion gas production etc. from burning materials. Thus, test method using cone calorimeter, an internationally recognized and accepted for the evalua-tion of fire properties, is a very promising tool for combustion study on various kind of materials and products.

  • Calorific value of mixed gas, like liquefied natural gas (LNG), is strongly depends on its compositions which are affected by the mining place and producing time. The variation in calorific value have an direct influence on the combustion characteristics and performances of boiler, burner, vehicle, power plants etc. Thus, developing experimental method to measure exact calorific value is becoming an issue in the related industrial fields. Flame calorimeter is developed to get calorific value at the dynamic equilibrium state using electric substitution method. Refrigerant-11 carries heat from combustor and/or heater to the Peltier elements which pumped it out to the cooling water. It is found out that error in the measured calorific value of methane is 2.86% compared with the theoretical one. Developed design technique and the experimental data will be applied to design the national standard gas calorific value measuring apparatus.

  • The present study has been conducted to analyse the effects of various pool diameters on the measurement of heat release rate (HRR) of heptane fire using large scale cone calorimeter (LSC). The burning rate which is the major parameter for HRR compared with the previous model suggested by A. Hamins. The combustion efficiency for heptane by oxygen consumption method is about 91%, which is almost same with the previous results of 92% suggested by J. Gore. The convective HRR by enthalpy consumption method was 54% lower than HRR by oxygen consumption method. This results are practical use for establishing the reliability of heat release rate for fire experiment.

  • Polyester type polyurethane foam modified with acrylic polyol was prepared by quasi prepolymer method. Thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of polyurethane foam were analysed by thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA). Also, glass transition temperature was measured by differential scanning calorimeter(DSC). As acrylic polyol contents were increased, thermal stability measured by TGA was slightly decreased. Storage modulus was increased and tan delta was decreased with increasing of acrylic polyol contents.

  • The reduced scale fire test provides basic data but it is not enough to analysis real fire problem directly because there is no exact analogy theory between a real fire and the reduced scale model. Therefore we have developed the large scale calorimeter in order to the real scale fire test. This advanced large scale calorimeter used for physical properties such as a heat release rate, based upon consumption of $O_2$ method. Using this large scale calorimeter, we cameo out the real scale vehicle fire test in order to evaluation for heat release rate. We obtained the calculated result for HRR $2.3{\sim}3.4\;MW$ and this result is very similar to the PIARC candidate HRR. It is approve that this facility has the reliability and it is capable of applying to the advance fire research in the future.
