  • If water flows through a narrow passage into a medium that keeps the equilibrium of temperature, it causes small temperature difference and makes a temperature anomaly. The seepage or leakage often observed at old dams is a representative example of bringing about a temperature anomaly. Therefore, temperature measurements have been regarded as one of excellent methods that can detect the situation of seepage or leakage. However, because existing temperature measurement methods are based on a single sensor, the application of the method to the whole structure is nearly not possible in technical and economical phases. This paper introduces a temperature monitoring system using a thermal sensor cable that is comprised of addressable thermal sensors connected in parallel at many positions within a single cable. Through various laboratory and field experiments, it has been proved that the temperature monitoring technique can give an useful information about permeability of a medium or connectivity of fractures which have been regarded as difficult problems.

  • Civil infrastructure, in both its construction and maintenance, represents the largest societal investment in this country, outside of the health care industry. Despite being the lifeline of US commerce, civil infrastructure has scarcely benefited from the latest sensor technological advances. Our future should focus on harnessing these technologies to enhance the robustness, longevity and economic viability of this vast, societal investment, in light of inherent uncertainties and their exposure to service and even extreme loadings. One of the principal means of insuring the robustness and longevity of infrastructure is to strategically deploy smart sensors in them. Therefore, the objective is to develop novel, durable, smart sensors that are especially applicable to major infrastructure and the facilities to validate their reliability and long-term functionality. In some cases, this implies the development of new sensing elements themselves, while in other cases involves innovative packaging and use of existing sensor technologies. In either case, a parallel focus will be the integration and networking of these smart sensing elements for reliable data acquisition, transmission, and fusion, within a decision-making framework targeting efficient management and maintenance of infrastructure systems. In this paper, prudent and viable sensor and health monitoring technologies have been developed and used in several large structural systems. Discussion will also include several practical bridge health monitoring applications including their design, construction, and operation of the systems.

  • This paper presents a multi-functional system, consisting of a magnetorheological (MR) damper and an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device, and its applications in stay cables. The proposed system is capable of offering multiple functions: (1) mitigating excessive vibrations of cables, (2) estimating cable tension, and (3) harvesting energy for wireless sensors used health monitoring of cable-stayed bridges. In the proposed system, the EMI device, consisting of permanent magnets and a solenoid coil, can converts vibration energy into electrical energy (i.e., induced emf); hence, it acts as an energy harvesting system. Moreover, the cable tension can be estimated by using the emf signals obtained from the EMI device. In addition, the MR damper, whose damping property is controlled by the harvested energy from the EMI device, can effectively reduce excessive cable vibrations. In this study, the multi-functionality of the proposed system is experimentally evaluated by conducting a shaking table test as well as a full-scale stay cable in a laboratory setting. In the shaking table experiment, the energy harvesting capability of the EMI device for wireless sensor nodes is investigated. The performance on the cable tension estimation and the vibration mitigation are evaluated using the full-scale cable test setup. The test results show that the proposed system can sufficiently generate and store the electricity for operating a wireless sensor node twice per day, significantly alleviate vibration of a stay cable (by providing about 20% larger damping compared to the passive optimal case), and estimate the cable tension accurately within a 2.5% error.

  • There has been a gradual increase in the demand for the electric power in Korea. In order to meet the demand, power station should have technical functions with increased effectiveness. When accident happens in electric machinery at power stations, huge amount of economic losses and mulfunction of equipments occur. One of the accidents is a deteriorated cables operating power stations. In order to prevent cable accident in advance, we should monitor the insulation status of the cable. Cable accidents are resulting from the junctions. We have developed and installed a device in order to identify the status of junction part of power cable at Korea Western Power Co., Ltd.. We performed an accurate diagnosis for the stable utilization of junctions where the accidents occurs most frequently, and to increase the reliability. In this paper, we present the concepts of our device and the method of monitoring diagnosis for the stable use of junctions at cables predicting the life time of cables by analyzing the data obtained by the device. We also present the hardware aspect of the device we have developed.

  • This paper presents a Cable Stayed Bridge Construction Management System, which consists of Structural System Identification Method (SSIM), Error Sensitivity Analysis and Optimum Error Adjustment & Prediction System. The 1st System Identification Method builds an error influence matrix using the linear superposition of each error modes. The 2nd SSIM also considers the second error mode term, which shows good error factor estimation. The optimal cable adjustment can be accomplished within the allowable range of both cable tension and camber. The Post processor, constituted with Motif and GL library on SGI platform, is useful for monitoring construction stage management by displaying construction data, adjustment and prediction results at each construction step.

  • A pedestrian UHPC cable-stayed bridge(Super Bridge I) of the KICT was completed as a test bed. A long-term monitoring system has been installed on the UHPC bridge in order to acquire all types of long-term data such as strain, acceleration, tension force, wind direction and speed, temperature, etc. This system will provide valuable database enabling to assess the long-term behavior of the UHPC pedestrian hybrid cable-stayed bridge. This database will be exploited for the evaluation of the mechanical characteristics and serviceability of the UHPC members so as to estimate the behavioral features of long-span hybrid cable stayed bridges.

  • The trend of partial discharges(PD) magnitude which occured in a artificial void at cable joint is investigated as the function of a time. The results have shown that more than 500pC could be sustained for the considerable duration so the efficiency of monitoring a PD magnitude for diagnosing cable joints is confirmed. The other defects at cable joints are now under the same test, we can get the experimental data sooner or later.

  • The domestic needs for larger capability of power sources are increasing to cope with the expanding power load which results from the industrial developments & the progressed life style. In summer, the peak load is mainly due to the non-industrial reasons such as air-conditioners and other cooling equipments. To cover the concentrated peak load in stable, the power transmission lines should be more constructed and efficiently operated. The ampacity design of the underground cable system is generally following international standards such as IEC287, IEC60853 and JCS168 which regards the shape of 100% daily full power loads. It is not so efficient to neglect the real shapes of load curves generally below 60~70% of full load. The dynamic (real time) rating system tends to be used with the measured thermal parameters which make it possible to calculate the maximum ampacity within required periods. In this paper, the CTM(Conductor Temperature Monitoring) which is the base of dynamic rating systems for tunnel environment is proposed by a design of lumped thermal network ($\pi$-type thermal model) and distribution temperature sensor attached configuration, including the estimation results of its performances by load cycle test on 345kV single phase XLPE cable.
