The study examines the limit strength for steel cable-stayed bridges. A case studies have been performed in order to evaluate the limit strength lot steel cable-stayed bridges using nonlinear inelastic analysis approach and bifurcation point instability analysis approach, effective tangent modulus $(E_f)$ method. To realize it, a practical nonlinear inelastic analysis condoling the initial shape is developed. In the initial shape analysis, updated structural configuration is introduced instead of initial member forces for beam-column members at every iterative step. Geometric and material nonlinearities of beam-column members are accounted by using stability function, and by using CRC tangent modulus and parabolic function, respectively Besides, geometric nonlinearity of cable members is accounted by using secant value of equivalent modulus of elasticity. The load-displacement relationships obtained by the proposed method are compared well with those given by other approaches. The limit strengths evaluated by the proposed nonlinear inelastic analysis for the proposed cable-stayed bridges with tee dimensional configuration compared with those by the inelastic bifurcation point instability analyses.

In this paper the reliability analyses of the cable-supported bridge design code which is recently issued in Korea are performed and the results are presented. Governing load combinations for the member design and the statistical properties of the main members are introduced and the analysis is performed using an example cable-stayed bridge for which the design is performed following the load and resistance factors defined in the design code. The reliability analysis shows the target reliability index can be achieved by applying load and resistance factors and the application of the resistance modification factor can enhance the reliability level if the importance of the bridge needs to be increased. The sensitivity analysis reveals that decreasing uncertainty of the cable strength is critical for obtaining the target reliability index. The study results show that the design using the load and resistance factors of the code can achieve the target reliability indexes for the design of cable supported bridge.
To investigate the seismic performance of long-span partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge, a super long-span partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge scheme with main span of 1400m is taken as example, structural response of the bridge under E1 seismic action is investigated numerically by the multimode seismic response spectrum and time-history analysis, seismic behavior and also the effect of structural geometric nonlinearity on the seismic responses of super long-span partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridges are revealed. The seismic responses are also compared to those of a fully self-anchored cable-stayed bridge with the same main span. The effects of structural parameters including the earth-anchored girder length, the girder width, the girder depth, the tower height to span ratio, the inclination of earth-anchored cables, the installation of auxiliary piers in the side spans and the connection between tower and girder on the seismic responses of partially ground-anchored cable-stayed bridges are investigated, and their reasonable values are also discussed in combination with static performance and structural stability. The results show that the horizontal seismic excitation produces significant seismic responses of the girder and tower, the seismic responses of the towers are greater than those of the girder, and thus the tower becomes the key structural member of seismic design, and more attentions should be paid to seismic design of these sections including the tower bottom, the tower and girder at the junction of tower and girder, the girder at the auxiliary piers in side spans; structural geometric nonlinearity has significant influence on the seismic responses of the bridge, and thus the nonlinear time history analysis is proposed to predict the seismic responses of super long-span partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridges; as compared to the fully self-anchored cable-stayed bridge with the same main span, several stay cables in the side spans are changed to be earth-anchored, structural stiffness and natural frequency are both increased, the seismic responses of the towers and the longitudinal displacement of the girder are significantly reduced, structural seismic performance is improved, and therefore the partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge provides an ideal structural solution for super long-span cable-stayed bridges with kilometer-scale main span; under the case that the ratio of earth-anchored girder length to span is about 0.3, the wider and higher girder is employed, the tower height-to-span ratio is about 0.2, the larger inclination is set for the earth-anchored cables, 1 to 2 auxiliary piers are installed in each of the side spans and the fully floating system is employed, better overall structural performance is achieved for long-span partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridges.

Recently, cable-stayed bridges have been attempting to apply bold and experimental shapes for aesthetic and originality. In the case of bridges that have no similar cases, deep understanding and verification of analytical modeling is needed. S-shaped curved pedestrian cable-stayed bridge is always twisted because the cable is arranged on one side of the inverted triangular truss girder. In order to suppress the torsion, the Link-shoes are arranged at the left and right top members with reference to the Bearing placed at the mid-bottom member. The first research is related to the modeling method of Link-Shoe and Diaphram. In order to accurately reflect the transverse structural system and the torsional stiffness, it was necessary to model the Link-Shoe and the Diaphram directly rather than indirectly using the stiffness of the Bearing. The second study is related to the lateral arrangement of Bearing and Link-Shoes. Method 1 is to place in order of Link-shoe, Bearing, and Link-shoe from outside the curve radius. Method 2 is place to in order of Bearing, Bearing, and Link-shoe. In method 2, compared to method 1, the stress in the outer top member was larger and the stress in the inner one was decreased. It is analyzed that the stress adjustment is possible according to the lateral arrangement of Bearing and Link-Shoe.
At the end of 2013, there were 434 nuclear power reactors in operation worldwide, with a total capacity of 371.6 GW(e), approximately 80 % had been in service 20 years and more. Many Member States have given high priority to licensing their nuclear power plants to operate for terms longer than the time frame originally anticipated(e.g. 30 or 40 years). One of challenges for long term operation is cable ageing management. How can qualify the existing cable under harsh environment in nuclear power plant? The paper described the approaches on qualification, condition monitoring, and management of low voltage cables in nuclear power plant.
Exact application of the tensile force is critical to high-tension members in civil engineering structures, and thus actual tensile forces have often been estimated in field. To date, a few methodologies have been presented utilizing static and/or dynamic responses of tension members. Each of these methods has its disadvantages as well as advantages in its procedures, accuracy, and equipment requirements. In this paper, the feasibility of a sensitivity based methodology, based on the relationship between the natural frequencies and the applied tensile force, developed by the authors, is verified using the measured data from a cable-stayed bridge structure. From the results, it is shown that the proposed method can be utilized in estimating the tensile force in tension member of a real structure.
The paper presents a model to calculate reinforcement strain using measured crack width in members under applied tension, flexure, and/or shear stress. Crack mapping using a new type of distributed coaxial cable sensors for health monitoring of large-scale civil engineering infrastructure was recently proposed and developed by the authors. This paper shows the results and performance of such sensors mounted on near surface of two flexural beams and a large scale reinforced concrete box girder that was subjected to cyclic combined shear and torsion. The main objectives of this health monitoring study was to correlate the sensor's response to strain in the member, and show that magnitude of the signal's reflection coefficient is related to increases in applied load, repeated cycles, cracking, and reinforcement yielding. The effect of multiple adjacent cracks, and signal loss was also investigated. The results shown in this paper are an important step in using the sensors for crack mapping and determining reinforcement strain for in-situ structures.

Recently, CSB(Cable-Stayed Bridge) have been attempted to be atypical forms for landscape elements in Korea. CSB with new geometry need to analyze their characteristics clearly to ensure structural safety. This study's bridge is the S-shaped curved pedestrian CSB that has a girder with S-shape plane curve and reverse triangular truss cross section, inclined independent pylon, modified Fan type main cable and vertical backstay cable. Curved CSB can have excessive lateral displacement and moment when the tension is adjusted, focusing only on longitudinal behavior, such as a straight CSB. In order to analyze the effect of the cable on the lateral behavior of bridges, the cable is divided into two groups according to the lateral displacement direction of the pylon due to tension. The influence of the combination ratio of GR1 and GR2 on the girder, bearing, pylon, and vertical anchor cable was analyzed. When the tension applied to the bridge is 1.0GR1 plus 1.0GR2, In the combination of 1.2GR1 plus 0.8GR2, the stress on the left and right upper member of the truss girder and the deviation of the both were minimized. In addition, the horizontal force of the bearing, the lateral displacement and moment of the pylon, and the tension of the vertical backstay cable also decreased. This study is expected to be used as basic data for determination of tension of CSB with similar geometry.

This paper presents an investigation on the geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges using geometric nonlinear finite element analysis method. The girder and mast in cable-stayed bridges show the combined axial load and bending moment interaction due to horizontal and vertical forces of inclined cable. So these members are considered as beam-column member. In this study, the nonlinear finite element analysis method is used to resolve the geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges in consideration of beam-column effect, large displacement effect (known as P-${\delta}$ effect) and cable sag effect. To analyze a cable-stayed bridge model, nonlinear 6-degree of freedom frame element and nonlinear 3-degree of freedom equivalent truss element is used. To resolve the geometric nonlinear behavior for various live load cases, the initial shape analysis is performed for considering dead load before live load analysis. Then the geometric nonlinear analysis for each live load case is performed. The deformed shapes of each model, load-displacement curves of each point and load-tensile force curves for each cable are presented for quantitative study of geometric nonlinear behavior of cable-stayed bridges.
