  • The fault location algorithm based on wavelet transform was developed to locate the fault more accuracy after the operation of relay. The stationary wavelet transform(SWT) was introduced instead of conventional discrete wavelet transform(DWT) because SWT has redundancy properties which is more useful in noise signal processing. The algorithm was based on the correlation of wavelet coefficients at multi-scales. Fault location algorithm was tested by simulation on real power cable system. From these results, the fault can be located even in very difficult situations, such as at different inception angle and fault resistance.

  • This paper presents basis functions for curvilinear square elements and describes finite element analysis for coaxial cable and coaxial cross-section waveguide. On the case of coaxial cable, the more exact results is obtained by the propotional elements than by the equal elements with the same number of elements. It is found that the cutoff frequency of coaxial cross-sectional waveguide is more dependent on the inner and outer radius than the cross-sectional angle.

  • To investigate the influence of partial discharge(PD) distribution characteristics due to various defects on the power cable joints interface, we used the K-means clustering method. As the result of PD number(n) distribution analyzing on $\Phi-n$ graph, the phase angle($\Phi$) of cluster centroid shifted to $0^{\circ}\;and\;180^{\circ}$ increasing with applying voltage. It was confirmed that the PD quantify(q) and euclidean distance of centroid were increased with applying voltage from the centroid distribution analyzing of $\Phi-q$ plane. The dispersion degree was increased with calculated standard deviation of the $\Phi-q$ cluster centroid. The PD number and mean value on $\Phi-q$ graph were some different by electric field concentration with defect types.

  • Inverted pendulum is a classical example and a famous tool for testing the effectiveness of many control schemes. Owing to their nonlinearity and unstable characteristic, a controller development either for swinging-up or stabilizing its upright position had been a great interest of many researchers. In this paper, the swinging-up control of the inverted pendulum using energy control will be presented. However, the saturation function in its control law could harm the experimental equipments. In addition, this swinging-up method did not consider limited sector of the arm angle to avoid another hazard, for instance, the twisted cable in the apparatus. Therefore, in this paper the position control of the arm angle using simple PD control in accordance with the energy control is proposed. Consequently, the limited arm sector angle can be achieved and the saturation function can also be replaced effectively by the PD control.

  • Shear strength of the discontinuity on which the pre-failure of rock slope was occurred during surface excavation was measured through the direct shear test using core samples obtained in-situ. Internal friction angle was increased as the roughness of discontinuity surface(JRC) was increased. Results of the tilt test using core samples of higher JRC also showed very similar trend as those of the direct shear test. When the samples replicated from natural cores were used int he tilt test, results of friction angles showed almost perfect continuation of the residual friction angles from the direct shear test. However, when the gouge material existed in the discontinuity the internal friction angle strongly depended upon the rate of filling thickness to the height of asperity irrespective of the JRC. Based on the results of both direct shear test and tilt test internal friction angle and cohesion of discontinuity, which reflect the in-situ conditions fo pre-sliding failure and also can be used for the optimum design of support system, were assessed. Two kinds of support measures which were expected to increase the stability of rock slope were considered; lowering of slope face angle and installation of rock cable. But, it was found that the first method might lead to more unstable conditions of rock slope when the cohesion of discontinuity plane was negligibly low and in that case the support systems of any kind which could exert actual resisting force were needed to ensure the permanent stability of rock slope.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop in plate heat exchangers for absorption applications, and to quantify the effect of mass flow rate, solution concentration, and geometric conditions such as chevron angle on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in the plate heat exchangers. The working fluid is $H_2O$/LiBr solution with the LiBr concentration range of 53.2 - 62.5 % in mass. The results show that the overall heat transfer coefficient increases linearly with increasing Re. The heat transfer rate increases with increasing the chevron angle while it does not significantly depend on the LiBr concentration. The pressure drop also increases with increasing the chevron angle. The effect of the chevron angle on the pressure drop is more significant than that of the concentration.

  • This paper includes new nozzle design, basic design factors of water mist system that minimize a thermal damage of cable causing business interruption and applying underground utility tunnel. A underground concrete structure (2.5 m(H)$\times$2.5 m(W)$\times$25 m(D)) is constructed in order to test a nozzle performance. Under the designing fire scenario, critical thermal damage of cable sheath ($400^{\circ}c$) reached within a 2 minutes with unsuppressed fire, but type 1 nozzle (SMD 470 $\mu{m}$) and type 2 nozzle (SMD 650 $\mu{m}$) control cable temperature below $400^{\circ}c$. A system performance and fundamental design factors; K factor, flow rate, spray angle, size distribution, nozzle pressure, spray density are analyzed and proposed for system optimization.

  • Open decks are a widely used deck configuration in long-span cable-stayed bridges; however, incorporating aerodynamic countermeasures are advisable to achieve better aerodynamic performance than a bluff body deck alone. A sectional model of an open deck cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 400 m was selected to conduct a series of wind tunnel tests. The influences of five practical aerodynamic countermeasures on flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance were investigated and are presented in this paper. The results show that an aerodynamic shape selection procedure can be used to evaluate the flutter stability of decks with respect to different terrain types and structural parameters. In addition, the VIV performance of $\prod$-shaped girders for driving comfortableness and safety requirements were evaluated. Among these aerodynamic countermeasures, apron boards and wind fairings can improve the aerodynamic performance to some extent, while horizontal guide plates with 5% of the total deck width show a significant influence on the flutter stability and VIV. A wind fairing with an angle of $55^{\circ}C$ showed the best overall control effect but led to more lock-in regions of VIV. The combination of vertical stabilisers and airflow-depressing boards was found to be superior to other countermeasures and effectively boosted aerodynamic performance; specifically, vertical stabilisers significantly contribute to improving flutter stability and suppressing vertical VIV, while airflow-depressing boards are helpful in reducing torsional VIV.

  • The angle of attack of a cambered otter board in a bottom trawl was estimated using a three-dimensional semi-analytic treatment of a towing cable (warp) system that was applied to the field experiments of a bottom trawl obtained by the Scanmar system. The equilibrium condition of the horizontal component and vertical component of forces was used to the three forces acting on the otter board in the horizontal plane. Those forces were the force on the warp at the bracket, hydrodynamic lift and drag forces on the otter board and the force on the hand rope attached just behind the otter board. Also the equilibrium of moment about the front edge of the otter board was used to find out the angle of attack of the cambered otter board. When the warp length was 120m and 180m long and the towing speed was between 1.23 and 1.90 m/s, the estimated angle of attack of the cambered otter board was ranged between $26.1^{\circ}$ and $29.6^{\circ}$, respectively, though the maximum lift force was at the angle of attack $22.6^{\circ}$. The angle of attack of the otter board was tended to increase weakly with the longer length of warp (180 m) at the same towing speed in the experiment.
