  • In a supercooled or capsule type ice storage system, aqueous solution (or water) may have trouble with non-uniform dissolution though the system contributes to the simplicity of system and ecological improvement. The non-uniform dissolution increases the instability of the system because it may cause an ice blockage in pipe or cooling part. In order to observe the supercooled state, a cooling experiment was performed with pressurization to an ethylene glycol(EG) 3 mass% solution in stationary state. Also, the effect of the pressurization from 101 to 505 kPa to the dissolution of supercooled aqueous solution was measured with the dissolution time of the supercooled aqueous solution at a fixed cooling rate of brine. At results, the dissolution of supercooled point decreased as the pressure of the aqueous solution in the vessel increased. Moreover, the dissolution point increased as the heat flux for cooling increased.

  • Cooling water sampled at Pohang Steel Company, Korea, was used to study the effect of biocide (NaOCl) on biofilm formation and metal corrosion. Planktonic microorganisms were killed in the presence of biocide (0.2% NaOCl) within 1.5 h, but not sessile microorganisms in biofilms even after one week. Black color of biofilms, possibly due to the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria, were made with the natural cooling waters, while orange color of biofilms were formed when cooling waters were autoclaved or when 0.2% NaOCl was added to the natural cooling waters. Microbially influenced corrosion rate in black color of biofilms was 2.3 fold higher than that in orange color of biofilms.

  • The current study deals with the effect of cooling rate and temperature for annealing on medium-carbon Cr-Mo alloy steel, especially for cold heading quality wire rod, to derive the optimum micro-structures for plastic deformation. This is to optimize the spheroidization heat treatment conditions for softening the material. Heat treatment was performed under seven different conditions at a temperature between Ac1 and Ac3, mostly within 720℃ to 760℃, and the main variables at this time were temperature, retention time and cooling rate. Microstructure and phase changes were observed for each test condition, and it was confirmed that they were greatly affected by the cooling rate. It was also confirmed that the cooling rate was changed in the range of 0.1℃/min to 5℃/min and affected by phase deformation and spheroidization fraction. The larger the spheroidization fraction, the lower the hardness, which is associated with the increasing connection of ferrite phases.

  • This study was carried out not only to develop CFD model for numerically simulating fog cooling system but also to verify the validity of the developed model by data measured in fag cooling greenhouse. In addition the developed model was applied to investigate the effects of spraying water temperature, spraying water amount, spraying interval and evaporation percentage on the performance of the fog cooling system. According to the simulation results, the temperature differences between the measured and predicted temperatures at each measurement point were $0.1~1.4^{\circ}C$ in case of no shading and $0.2~2.3^{\circ}C$ in close of shading. The humidity differences were 0.3~6.0% and 0.7~10.6%, respectively in the cases of no shading and shading. Because the predicted data showed a good agreement with the measured ones, the developed model is supposed to be able to predict the cooling effect of the fog cooling system. The performance of fog cooling system was greatly influenced by spraying water amount, spraying interval and evaporation percentage, but it was not influenced by spraying water temperature.

  • During the continuous casting of boron-bearing steel, the corner cracks on the slab are formed by deformation with low strain rate and rapid cooling at the unbending temperature within the range of 800- $1000^{\circ}C$. Especially, the rapid cooling in the corner of slab during the continuous casting leads to as corner cracking. Therefore, in this study, the hot tensile tests applied to the different cooling rates were taken into account in order to study the effect of cooling rate on the hot ductility of boron-bearing steel. The results revealed that increasing cooling rate deteriorate the hot ductility of boron- bearing steel. Rapid decreasing of the hot ductility is caused by formation of a film-like ferrite and precipitate at the austenite grain boundaries. The morphology of the precipitates in the boron-bearing steel was monitored by PTA (Particle Tracking Autoradiography) and TEM, we observed MnS and BN compound and their morphology was quite different depending on the cooling rates. When the cooling rate is increased, rodshape MnS and BN precipitates can be formed along the austenite grain boundaries. It can cause that weakening the boundary region and decreasing the hot ductility of boron-bearing steel.

  • The effect of root-zone local cooling on seedling growth of tomato was investigated. Lower pipe cooling was used for local cooling of the root zone, and the root zone temperature was set at 20 and 25℃. There was no difference in plant height, root length, and leaf number according to local cooling temperature. Leaf area, fresh weight, dry weight, and chlorophyll content of the shoot and root was higher in the 25℃ than those of 20℃ at 28 DAS. These results showed that cooling for seedling growth of tomato 25℃ is sufficient considering energy efficiency. This study will be helpful in the development of local cooling technology that can reduce the energy required for cooling during the production of tomato seedlings in the high temperature season.

  • It's so difficult to obtain simultaneously both product quality and improvement of the productivity of which products are in hot aluminum extrusion process. But significant improvements in productivity and extrudate quality result from die cooling system using nitrogen gas injection during aluminum hot extrusion. These benefits are due primarily to cooling effect nitrogen gas and removal of excess heat in the extrudate temperature. This investigation is carried out hot extrusion experiment, also compared cooling system with non-cooling system to inspect cooling effects on hot aluminum extrusion. The purpose of this investigation is estimated the grain growth fur the extrudate quality, and the ram speed for the improvement of the productivity.

  • An experimental study on the stratified fluids was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics, heat transfer through the interface of fluids, and the applications of thermal behaviors in the square cavity. The same volume of water and silicon oil was filled in it. The experiments were performed with the variations of initial temperatures and cooling surface temperatures. And the effect of vertical or horizontal cooling surface positions in the square cavity was investigated. When the cooling surface temperatures were $-4^{\circ}C$ , the supercooling phenomena were observed for both cases of cooling surface positions in the full region regardless of the initial temperature of fluid. In the square cavity with horizontal cooling surfaces, the lower the initial temperatures were, the longer the supercooling durations were, and with vertical cooling surface the lower the initial temperatures were, the shorter the supercooling durations were.

  • This paper presents demonstration study results derived through field testing of a solar assisted cooling and heating system for the library of a cultural center building located in Gwangju, Korea. The area of demanded cooling and heating for building was about 350m2. Solar hot water was delivered by means of a 200m2 array of evacuated tubular solar collector (ETSC) to drive a single-effect (LiBr/H2O) absorption chiller of 10RT nominal cooling capacity. From March in 2008 to February in 2009, demonstration test were performed for solar cooling and heating system. After experiments and analysis, this study found that solar thermal system was 84% for the solar hot water supply and 12% for space heating and 4% for space cooling.

  • Numerical calculations are performed to simulate the film cooling effect of turbine blade tip with squealer rim. Because of high temperature of inside rim, squealer rim is damaged easily. Therefore many various cooling systems were used. The calculations are based on 100,000 Reynolds number in linear cascade model. A blade has 2% tip clearance and 8.4% rim height. The axial chord length and turning angle is 237mm, 126$^{\circ}$. Numerical calculations are performed without and with film cooling. In a film cooling in the cavity, hot spots of cavity were cooled effectively. However hot spots of suction side rim still remains. The CFD results show that the circulation flow in cavity of squealer tip affects the temperature rise of squealer rim. To maintain the blade integrity and avoid the excessive hot spot of blade, rearrangement of cooling hole is needed.
