  • This study was performed to investigate aflatoxin reduction resulting from the pre-treatment and the cooking and processing of corn. Aflatoxin was produced by Aspergillus parasiticus ATCC 15517 on a type of corn imported from the United States. The aflatoxin-produced com (AC) was pre-treated in three ways in order to reduce aflatoxin: exposure to sun light for 7 days (SC); ultraviolet irradiation for 56 hours (UC); and washing with water three times (WC). Four kinds of cooking and processing methods (boiling, steaming, baking, and popping) were used to reduce aflatoxin in the AC control, SC, UC, and WC. These treatments produced com gruel, com cakes, com bread and popcorn. The aflatoxin content in the samples was determined by high performance liquid chromatography. The total aflatoxin level of the AC was significantly decreased by sun light and UV (p<0.05), and decreased by washing. After cooking and processing the AC, SC, UC, and WC, and averaging the total aflatoxin levels in the final products, the greatest reduction was found in the com gruel, then the popcorn, then the corn cakes, and the least reduction in the com bread. These results indicate that sunlight and ultraviolet energy could be effective factors in aflatokin degradation in corn before cooking and processing. This study also indicates that boiling, steaming, baking and popping were helpful in reducing the aflatoxin level in the com and that the most helpful factors were exposure time to heat. More research is needed to reduce the aflatoxin level down to below the maximum tolerable level of aflatoxin in foods.

  • The influences of the different mixture of urea fertilizer and pig manure compost as a nitrogen (N) source on Chinese cabbage yield, N uptake, and N agronomic efficiency (AE) were evaluated in two soils having different soil fertility levels. Increasing urea application level was very effective to improve yield and N uptake of Chinese cabbage, and the highest yield was obtained by urea fertilization alone in two soils. On the other hand, the lowest yield and N uptake was obtained from compost alone application in two soils. There was no significant difference in terms of the nitrogen AE between low and high fertility soils that were fully applied with urea. The AE values of Chinese cabbage applied by compost alone were significantly higher in the soil having a low fertility (28.8 g $g^{-1}$) than that in soil with high fertility (16.2 g $g^{-1}$), suggesting that N in compost was more responsive in improving the yield of Chinese cabbage in low fertility soils.

  • Recently, the necessity of accessing spatial data from remote computer via network has been increased as distributed spatial data have been increased due to their size and cost. Many methods have been used in recent years for transferring spatial data, such as socket, CORBA, HTTP, RPC, FTP, etc. In this paper, we propose spatial clearinghouse components to access distributed spatial data sources via CORBA and Internet. The spatial clearinghouse components are defined as OLE/COM components that enable users to access spatial data that meet their requests from remote computer. For reusability, we design the spatial clearinghouse with UML and implement it as a set of components. In order to enhance interoperability among different platforms in distributed computing environment, we adopt international standards and open architecture such as CORBA, HTTB, and OpenGIS Simple Features Specifications. There are two kinds of spatial clearinghouse: CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse and Internet-based spatial clearinghouse. The CORBA-based spatial clearinghouse supports COM-CORBA bridge to access spatial data from remote data providers that satisfy the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for OLE/COM using COM and CORBA interfaces. The Internet-based spatial clearinghouse provides Web-service components to access spatial data from remote data providers using Web-browser.

  • This paper presents an Electrotactile Display System (ETCS). One of the most important human sensory systems for human computer interaction is the sense of touch, which can be displayed to human through tactile output devices. To realize the sense of touch, electrotactile display produces controlled, localized touch sensation on the skin by passing small electric current. In electrotactile stimulation, the mechanoreceptors in the skin may be stimulated individually in order to display the sense of vibration, touch, itch, tingle, pressure etc. on the finger, palm, arm or any suitable location of the body by using appropriate electrodes and waveforms. We developed an ETCS and investigated effectiveness of the proposed system in terms of the perception of roughness of a surface by stimulating the palmar side of hand with different waveforms and the perception of direction and location information through forearm. Positive and negative pulse trains were tested with different current intensities and electrode switching times on the forearm or finger of the user with an electrode-embedded armband in order to investigate how subjects recognize displayed patterns and directions of stimulation.

  • CO adsorbates on the surface of Pt supported on carbon catalysts (Pt/C) were investigated by CO stripping voltammetry. Three types of CO adsorbed samples were prepared: by methanol dehydrogenation only (COm), by CO gas bubbling only (COg), and by methanol dehydrogenation followed by CO gas bubbling (COm+g). Our coverage data show that CO gas can be adsorbed on Pt/C catalyst already saturated with CO adsorbates by methanol dehydrogenation. The COm+g sample showed the properties of both COm as well as COg samples in terms of the potential although the CO adsorbed by dehydrogenation was completely exchanged with CO in the electrolyte solution. Therefore, the oxidation pathways of CO on Pt/C were observed to depend on the initial adsorption conditions of CO more strongly than on the CO coverage. Our results imply that an initial CO poisoning condition in fuel cell operation is an important factor to determine the difficulty in removing the adsorbed CO and confirm that the properties of the adsorbed CO do not change even with chemical replacement with CO in different conditions. In addition, our results indicate a low CO surface mobility on the Pt in an electrolyte solution.

  • Human body is hard to be in perfect balance during walking. Most of time the trunk is supported by one leg and the center of mass(COM) falls to the contralateral side. Thus, dynamic variables such as the velocity of the COM should be considered when gait stability is evaluated. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the extrapolated center of mass(XCom) which utilized the COM position and its velocity, is appropriate to evaluate gait stability. Ten healthy adults participated in this study and performed 3 different types of gaits(normal(NG), hands on waists(HWG), and hands on shoulders(HSG)) onto 4 different types of obstacle(obstacle height: 0%, 30%, 40% and 50% of leg length). Medio-lateral Com-CoP and XCom-CoP inclination angle were calculated during support phase. For all condition, greater M-L XCoM-CoP inclination angles were found(p<.05) compared with those of matched obstacle height CoM-CoP. Especially, M-L XCoM-CoP inclination angle at 50% height revealed the best condition for monitoring dynamic stability. Significantly increased in M-L XCoM-CoP inclination angle was found(p<.05) as obstacle height increased on NG and HWG.

  • The oil sorption capacities and biodegradability of nonwoven fabrics(pads) of PP and PP/kapok(10/90wt%) blend prepared in this study and commercial pad(T2COM: 100% PP) were compared. The biodegradability(58.5%) of PP/kapok(10/90wt%) blend pad was about 5times higher than those(11%) of PP and T2COM pads after 45days. The oil sorption rates of oil sorbent pads for various oils(diesel, lubricant and Bunker C oils) were markedly increased with increasing dipping time up to about 5min and then levelled off. The oil sorption rate and oil sorption capacity were found to increase in the order of PP/kapok(10/90wt%) blend>PP>commercial(T2COM) and Bunker C>lubricant>diesel.

  • This study was carried out to remove the water from low grade anthracite slurry produced at Eoryong coal mine by the oil agglomeration process. 80% of Anthracite as a coal oil mixture (COM) was separated from water by the difference of specific gravity. Then, the amount of kerosene, diesel oil, and heavy oil forming COM was 10% of the amount of sample, respectively. The recovery rate of combustibles and ash content of agglomerated anthracite were affected largely by the amount of added oil, pulp density, particle size, mixing time, and impeller speed. The recovery rate of combustibles was increased to 95% and ash content was decrea-sed from 30% to 13.5% under the optimum conditions.

  • In IP-USN for replacing the sensor network based on Zigbee by IP-based it, routing and the address assignment technique for sensor node are important focuses. But, there is a weak point in existing hierarchical routings. It is that all paths must be searched because the end node isn't considered. And the end node based muting is not sufficient in the mobile sensor network environment because it supports the only simple-path-search. Hereupon, this thesis suggests ComHRP(Complement HRP) that have the only merits of existing methods. The address assignment technique and search method are also proposed. ComHRP simplifies the organization of sensor networks and reduces network complexity. Also, It can efficiently deal with restructuring networks for the unpredictable ubiquitous sensor network feature.

  • Purpose: Research on equity carve-outs is necessary because the market has realized that they lead to holding company discounts by double counting, which can only be observed in the Korean market. Considering the differences in the SSG.com equity carve-out compared to previous cases in terms of business strategy, this study contributes to the literature by examining the effects on shareholder value in the Korean distribution industry. Research design, data, and methodology: This study investigated literature, analyst reports, and news articles to examine the causes of holding company discounts and analyze the SSG.com equity carve-out. Results: The monopoly of holding companies' listing premiums is the main cause underlying holding company discounts from equity carve-outs. Protections for minority shareholder value are challenging owing to the complexity of the process of acquiring rights, the short exercise period, and additional costs. Therefore, the motivation for equity carve-outs should be to increase overall shareholder value. Conclusion: By analyzing the reasons for holding company discounts in the Korean distribution industry, this study provides recommendations for improving shareholder value. Moreover, it contributes to the maturation of the Korean capital market by promoting a discussion on the revision of equity carve-outs.
