  • In this paper, we describe implementation of personal media gateway (PMG) for applications over BcN networks. PMG is a TV based set-top terminal, which enables transmission of Full D1 high quality video and audio at the speed of maximum 2Mbps. It supports SIP protocol and QoS for the BcN networks. The hardware of the PMG consists of host module, audio/video codec processing module, DTMF module, and remote control I/O module. H.263 and MPEG4 software are implemented in DSP as codec for hi-directional communication and streaming, respectively. G.711 and Ogg-Vorbis are implemented as audio codec. We examined the quality of video using the Video Quality Test Equpment, which was developed by KT Convergence Lab. The experimental results show the video quality of MOS 4.1 and audio quality of MOS 4.3. We expect that PMG will be prospective business models, and create new customer value.

  • In this paper, RS coded DTMF modulation for reliable data transmission over mobile fading channels is considered. The circuits of (15,9) RS codec are proposed and synthesized, and the performances are evaluated over fading channels. The codec circuits take about 14000 gates standardized by 2-input NAMD gate. The (15,9) RS coded DTMF signalling provides theoretical coding gain more than 20 dB over fading channels for BER 10.6, the criterion for data transmissions in mobile communications such as IMT-2000. Thus, It is very effective to apply RS codec to DTMF signalling for data transmission in mobile communications over fading channels.

  • This paper presents the coding method that have multi-mode and efficiency of audio codecs using the feature of audio signal. Recently, the developed extension super-wideband codec based on G.718 wideband divides two mode between Generic and Sinusiodal. So codec efficently encode audio signal exist in super-wideband. But the codec is not as efficent coding for harmonic component of wind instrument and string instrument and individual-Line component of percussion instrument. The proposed method are modeling and encoding multiple pitch and individual-line feature using multi mode coding. For the performance evaluation, we used SNR in MDCT domain for objective test and MUSHRA test for subjective test. As a result, the performance of SNR and MUSHRA test of the proposed method have better performance than the G.718 super-wideband codec.

  • This paper shows an implementation of video codec (coder/decoder) on an embedded system. The video codec supports both H.261 and H.263 standards. For efficient real-time processing, the video codec is partitioned into a software module and a hardware module. Both modules are codesigned on an embedded system. The software module is processed on a real-time operating system and a RISC processor. It cooperates with the hardware module to compress and decompress images in real time. AMBA (Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture) AHB (Advanced High-performance Bus) is used as the system bus. The hardware module works both as AHB masters and as AHB slaves. The encoder part of the hardware module operates in a pipelines mode to compress images in real time. The video codec compresses 15 CIF frames and simultaneously decompresses 15 CIF frames in a second according to H.261 or H.263 standard at 33 MHz frequency.

  • In this paper, dual-band digital codec for UHF(Ultra High Frequency) and MW(Micro Wave) is proposed for an RFID reader system. Most RFID systems have been supported only one protocol. But, There are many protocols of each bandwidth. Especially, UHF bandwidth which is widely used on the globe consists of A,B,C type, and more standards will be established. Recently, Since an interest about mobile RFID system is increasing, the RFID system with more than one protocol will be need. Therefore, this paper suggests a dual-band digital codec with UHF and MW bands for an RFID reader system. Standards used in this system are 18000-6C and 18000-4 standards. The digital codec is synthesize by the Quartus II compiler. Target device is EPC20Q240C8 which is family of CycloneII. Main Clock is 19.2MHz and elements of FPGA which is used for the system is 18,752.

  • In this paper, we designed a digital codec of an RFID tag for EPC global generation 2 class 1. There are a large number of studies on RRD standard and anti-collision algorithm but few studies on the design of digital parts of the RFID tag itself. For this reason, we studied and designed the digital codec hardware for EPC global generation 2 class 1 tag. The purpose of this paper is not to improve former studies but to present the hardware architecture, an estimation of hardware size and power consumption of digital part of the RFID tag. Results are synthesized using Synopsys with a 0.35um standard cell library. The hardware size is estimated to be 111640 equivalent inverters and dynamic power is estimated to be 10.4uW. It can be improved through full-custom design, but we designed using a standard cell library because it is faster and more efficient in the verification and the estimation of the design.

  • In this paper, an improved architecture of turbo codec for IMT-2000 is proposed. The encoder consists of an interleaver using an on-the-fly type address generator and a modified shift register instead of an external RAM, and the decoder uses a decreased number of RAM. The proposed architecture is simulated with C/VHDL languages, where BER (bit-error-rate) performances are generally in agreement with previous data by varying interaction numbers, interleaver block sizes and code rates.

  • In this paper we propose several mapping schemes for streaming video generated by state-of-the-art H.264 codec over IEEE 802.11e enabled wireless LANs. The schemes take advantage of both 802.11e's QoS mechanism and some novel features of the H.264 codec, so as to protect the most important information in terms of visual quality and reduce distortion under network congestion. The proposed methods are evaluated by means of the H.264 reference software codec, network simulation, and objective video quality measurements. Results show that the proposed methods achieve a robust and error resilient H.264 video streaming over wireless LANs than traditional best-effort streaming.

  • This paper presents different issues of the real-time compression algorithms without compromising the video quality in the distributed environment. The theme of this research is to manage the critical processing stages (speed, information lost, redundancy, distortion) having better encoded ratio, without the fluctuation of quantization scale by using IP configuration. In this paper, different techniques such as distortion measure with searching method cover the block phenomenon with motion estimation process while passing technique and floating measurement is configured by discrete cosine transform (DCT) to reduce computational complexity which is implemented in this video codec. While delay of bits in encoded buffer side especially in real-time state is being controlled to produce the video with high quality and maintenance a low buffering delay. Our results show the performance accuracy gain with better achievement in all the above processes in an encouraging mode.

  • Using intelligent information contained within the speech to identify the specific hidden data in the watermarked multimedia data is considered to be an efficient method to achieve the speech digital watermarking. This paper presents the performance comparison between various types of speech codec in order to determine an appropriate one to be used in digital watermarking applications. In the experiments, the speech signal encoded by four different types of speech codec, namely CELP, GSM, SBC and G.723.1codecs is embedded into a grayscale image, and theirs performance in term of speech recognition are compared. The method for embedding the speech signal into the host data is borrowed from a watermarking method based on the zerotrees of wavelet packet coefficients. To evaluate efficiency of the speech codec used in watermarking applications, the speech signal after being extracted from the attacked watermarked image will be played back to the listeners, and then be justified whether its content is intelligible or not.
