  • A non-uniform finite-difference Thin Film Transistor Simulation Program (TFTSP) has been developed for hydrogenated amorphous silicon TFTs. TFTSP was developed to remove as many of simplifying assumptions as possible and to provide flexibility in the modeling of TFTs so that different model assumptions may be analyzed and compared. In order to insure its usefulness and versatility as an analytic and design tool it is important for the code to satisfy a number of conditions. However, at the beginning stage of the program development, this paper shows that the code can compute the static terminal characteristics of a-Si:H TFTs under a wide range of bias conditions to allow for comparison of the model with experiment. Some of those comparisons include transfer characteristics and I-V characteristics. TFTSP will be refined to conveniently model the performances of TFTs of different designs and to analyze many anomalous behaviors and factors of a-Si:H TFTs.

  • A formulation is proposed for modelling the process of intra-granular diffusion of fission gas during irradiation of $UO_2$ under both normal operating conditions and power transients. The concept represents a simple extension of the formulation of Speight, including an estimation of the contribution of bubble motion to fission gas diffusion. The resulting equation is formally identical to the diffusion equation adopted in most models that are based on the formulation of Speight, therefore retaining the advantages in terms of simplicity of the mathematical-numerical treatment and allowing application in integral fuel performance codes. The development of the new model proposed here relies on results obtained by means of molecular dynamics simulations as well as finite element computations. The formulation is proposed for incorporation in the TRANSURANUS fuel performance code.

  • We demonstrate binary spectral phase coded waveform discrimination at 10 GHz for narrow band optical code-division multiple-access (NB-OCDMA) via direct electrical detection without using any optical hard-limiter. Only 9 phase-locked, 10 GHz spaced, spectral lines within a 100 GHz spectral window are used for the phase coding. Considerably high contrast ratio of 5 between signal and multiuser access interference noise can be achieved for $4{\times}10\;G\;pulse/sec$ timing coordinated OCDMA at a simple electrical receiver with 50 GHz bandwidth.

  • This article presents an integrated modeling approach for coupled analysis of heat transfer and microstructure evolution in welding carbon steel. The modeling procedure utilizes commercial finite element code ABAQUS/Standard as the platform for solving the equation of heat conduction. User subroutines that Implement computational thermodynamics and kinetics models are integrated with the FEA code to compute the transient microstructure evolution. In this study, the integrated models are applied to simulate the hot-tap repair welding of carbon steel pipeline. Microstructural components are treated as user output variables. Based on the predicted microstructure and cooling rates, hardness distributions in the welds were also predicted. The predicted microstructure and hardness distribution were found in good agreement with metallographic examinations and hardness measurements. This study demonstrates the applicability of computational models for the development of welding procedure for in-service pipeline repair.

  • To develop GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear), prediction of the flow field including pressure in GIS is very important. The transport phenomena in GIS including arc is also being studied in these days. In this study, to predict the arc behaviour for GIS with voltage rating up to 800kV developed by HHI (Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd.), the analysis of flow and electric field in GIS were investigated. To simulate the compressible flow in GIS, the CFX, commercial CFD code, was used. The movement of the piston and the electrode of the GIS was simulated with moving grid method, which was superior to the method of varying the property of cells in the aspect of accuracy and convergence of solution. The calculated maximum pressure within the puffer cylinder was matched with experimental data within 5% error. Also, the oscillation of pressure in GIS after the movement of electrode was well predicted.

  • In this study, product design and prototype manufacturing of a plastic water-pump pulley has been tried. The designed model is supposed to be made of 33 % glass reinforced resin of which the tensile strength is 180 MPa, and has 24 ribs on each side to increase its structural strength. Structural analysis under a static load of 300 kgf acting on both edges of the belt has been carried out using a commercial finite element code, MARC. The analysis result showed the maximum effective stress near a rib of designed model would be at most 35 MPa (less than 20% of the tensile strength), therefore, the plastic product would be sufficiently safe under that loading condition. On the basis of the structural analysis, a prototype of the designed model has been manufactured by using the fused deposition modelling (FDM) method which is one of the rapid prototyping (RP) methods, using ABS resin and support materials. The CAD data exported to the RP system in STL format was prepared by a commercial solid modeling software, SolidWorks. It has been proved that the plastic pulley can successfully replace the existing flow-formed steel product.

  • We propose multistage parallel nulling (MPN) partial parallel interference cancellation (PPIC) receiver for downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier (MC)-code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Though the V-BLAST is a popular MIMO receiver, it shows error floor for multiuser downlink MIMO MC-CDMA systems. The proposed MPN-PPIC receiver does not produce error floor for multiuser case, and achieves substantial performance gains with multistage processing. For single user case, the proposed method also surpasses the V-BLAST receiver with multistage processing for MIMO MC-CDMA systems with chip level interleaving. The system performance of the proposed MPN-PPIC receiver is evaluated through computer simulations.

  • This paper represents the effects of drain bias on the linearity and efficiency of an analog pre-distortion power amplifier(PA) for wideband code division multiple access(WCDMA) repeater applications. For verification, an analog predistorter(APD) with three-branch nonlinear paths for memory-effect compensation is implemented and a class-AB PA is fabricated using a 30-W Si LOMaS. From the measured results, at an average output power of 33 dBm(lO-dB back-off power), the PA with APD shows the adjacent channel leakage ratio(ACLR, ${\pm}$5 MHz offset) of below -45.1 dBc, with a drain efficiency of 24 % at the drain bias voltage($V_{DD}$) of 18 V. This compared an ACLR of -36.7 dEc and drain efficiency of 14.1 % at the $V_{DD}$ of 28 V for a PA without APD.

  • The energy distribution was calculated for an electron beam from an electron linear accelerator developed for medical applications using computational methods. The depth dose data for monoenergetic electrons from 0.1 MeV to 8.0 MeV were calculated by the DOSXYZ/nrc code. The calculated data were used to generate the energy distribution from the measured depth dose data by numerical iterations. The measured data in a previous work and an in-house computer program were used for the generation of energy distribution. As results, the mean energy and most probable energy of the energy distribution were 5.7 MeV and 6.2 MeV, respectively. These two values agreed with those determined by the IAEA dosimetry protocol using the measured depth dose.
