  • In this study, adsorption properties of oxidized NO by plasma using aminated polyolefin-g-GMA hybrid anion exchange fibers were investigated. The maximum conversion of $NO_2$ by plasma was 49% at the conditions of 200 ppm NO, 10% $O_2$ and 30 L/min of flow rate. The adsorption content for N02 of hybrid anion exchange fibers increased with increasing the swelling ratio and the highest value was 1.5 g $H_2O/g$ IEF. The adsorption of $NO_2$ by hybrid anion exchange fibers were very fast until 10 min and reached its maximum value of 80% at 120 min. Ion exchange capacity of hybrid anion exchange fibers increased with increasing the swelling ratio and it showed the highest 0.6 mmol/g IEF values at L/D=5. The adsorption isotherm model for hybrid anion exchange fibers were closer to Freundlich than Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. It was shown that adsorption of the multi-molecular layer was dominant.

  • We prepared hydrophobic PDMS-coated porous silica as pre-concentration adsorbent for chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Since CWAs can be harmful to human even with a small amount, detecting low-concentration CWAs has been attracting attention in defense development. Porous silica is one of the promising candidates for CWAs pre-concentration adsorbent since it is thermally stable and its surface area is sufficiently high. A drawback of silica is that adsorption of CWAs can be significantly reduced due to competitive adsorption with water molecule in air since silica is quite hydrophilic. In order to solve this problem, hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin film was deposited on silica. Adsorption and desorption of chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulants (Dimethylmethylphosphonate, DMMP and Dipropylene Glycol Methyl Ether, DPGEM) on bare and PDMS-coated silica were studied using temperature programed desorption (TPD) with and without co-exposing of water vapor. Without exposure of water vapor, desorbed amount of DMMP from PDMS-coated silica was twice larger than that from bare silica. When the samples were exposed to DMMP and water vapor at the same time, no DMMP was desorbed from bare silica due to competitive adsorption with water. On the other hand, desorbed DMMP was detected from PDMS-coated silica with reduced amount compared to that from the sample without water vapor exposure. Adsorption and desorption of DPGME with and without water vapor exposing was also investigated. In case of bare silica, all the adsorbed DPGME was decomposed during the heating process whereas molecular DPGME was observed on PDMS-coated silica. In summary, we showed that hydrophobic PDMS-coating can enhance the adsorption selectivity toward DMMP under humid condition and PDMS-coating also can have positive effect on molecular desorption of DPGME. Therefore we propose PDMS-coated silica could be an adequate adsorbent for CWAs pre-concentration under practical condition.

  • The sorption kinetic was studied to evaluate feasibility of removing PCBs from mineral oil with activated carbon. Adsorption efficiency for Aroclor 1242 which is composed of lower chlorinated PCB formulations was $\geq$ 95%, whereas the adsorption efficiency for Aroclor 1260 having higher chlorinated constituents was considerably lower with the efficiency falling to 75%. The observed difference in the adsorption efficiency is attributed to the geometry of PCBs with non-planar and coplanar structure. The concentration of coplanar PCBs is appreciably higher in Aroclor 1242. Since toxicity is primarily associated with coplanar congeners, the preferential adsorption of coplanar congeners by activated carbon accounts for the fact that toxicity reduction can be achieved through this process. The efficiency of process was assessed in terms of Toxicity Equivalence Factor (TEF).

  • Generally $PbTiO_3$ is manufactured in a form of thin films which is useful for the application of infrared sensors and non-volatile memory devices. Moreover $PbTiO_3$ has a characteristic of adsorption for organic acid as well as electronic property. Organic acid adsorption properties of $PbTiO_3$ powder prepared by sol-gel method was compared with the powder purchased from Aldrich Co. Crystallization and particle size of $PbTiO_3$ are influenced by process variables, such as dilution of sol solution, catalysis, calcination temperature, calcination time, etc. As the size of $PbTiO_3$ power decreased until several nanometers, adsorption of acetic acid and formic acid was increased 1.5-fold and 1.2-fold respectively.

  • Adsorption and desorption characteristics of the representative 10 kinds components consisting of gasoline vapor on activated carbon were investigated at the temperature range of $-30^{\circ}C{\sim}25^{\circ}C$. The breakthrough curves of each vapors obtained by the Thomas model were well described the breakthrough experimental results of this study. The breakthrough times of each vapors were correlated with the molecular weight, density, and vapor pressure. The breakthrough times had greater correlation with boiling point than molecular weight and density. The slope of the breakthrough curve was a proportional relationship with the rate constant (k) of Thomas model expression. The higher the slope of the breakthrough curve, the rate constant was larger. The biggest slope vapor had the smallest adsorption capacity ($q_e$). Adsorption and desorption characteristics of mixed vapor similar to the gasoline vapor were studied at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). The mixed vapor consisting of 9 components; group A (pentane, hexene, hexane), group B (benzene, toluene), group C (octane, ethylbenzene, xylene, nonane) was examined. Group A was not nearly adsorbed because of substitution by group C, and the desorption capacity of group A was smaller than group C. The adsorbed substances were confirmed to be Group C.

  • We demonstrated the efficacy of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) produced from a low grade iron ore as an adsorbent for the removal of Cr(VI), a toxic heavy metal anion present in wastewater. The adsorption of Cr(VI) by these MNPs strongly depended on the dosage of MNPs, the initial concentration of the Cr(VI) solutions, and pH. The highest Cr(VI) adsorption efficiency of 22.0 mg/g was observed at pH 2.5. The adsorption data were best fit with the Langmuir isotherm and corresponded to a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The used adsorbent was regenerated by eluting in highly alkaline solutions. Sodium bicarbonate showed the highest desorption efficiency of 83.1% among various eluents including NaOH, $Na_2HPO_4$, and $Na_2CO_3$. Due to the high adsorption capacity, the simple magnetic separation, and the high desorption efficiency, this nano-adsorbent produced from inexpensive and abundant resources may attract the attention of the industries to apply for removing various metal anionic contaminants from wastewater.

  • The adsorption properties of organo sulfur compounds on cation exchanged natural zeolites from n-heptane were investigated. The equilibrium adsorbed amounts were dependent upon the exchanged cation and the nature of organo sulfur compounds such as length, volume, electronical structure. The increasing orders of equilibrium adsorbed amounts were thiophene derivatives, disulfide, sulfide mercaptane and thiophene, benzothiaphene, dibenzothiophene. And $Co^{+2}$-zeolite was the most prominent adsorbant. Rate determining step of the adsorption at initial stage was intraparticle diffusion into the transitional pores of zeolite. These adsorption rates were dependent upon the bulkiness of adsorbate. Finally, preadsorbed water didn't affect these adsorption until the cation exchanged natural zeolite contained 2.26${\times}10^{-3}$ mol/g of water. It indicated that water preferentially occupied the micro pores of the cation exchanged natural zeolites.

  • The activated carbon was produced from Sancheong bamboo by steam and carbon dioxide gas activation methods. The carbonization of raw material was conducted at 90$0^{\circ}C$ and gas activation reactions were conducted with respect to various conditions. -activation temperature 750-90$0^{\circ}C$, the flow rate of steam 0.5-2g-$H_2O$/g-char$.$hr, the flow rate of carbon dioxide 5-30$m\ell$-$CO_2$/g-char-min and activation time 1-5 hr. The prepared activated carbons were measured yield, the adsorption capacity of iodine and methylene blue, BET specific surface area and pore size distribution. The adsorption capacity of iodine (680.5-1526.1 mg/g) and methylene blue (18.3-221.5 mg/g) increased with creasing activation temperature and activation time. The adsorption capacity of iodine and methylene blue increased with the activation gas quantity in the range of 0.5-1.5g-$H_2O$/g-charㆍhr, 5-18.9$m\ell$-Co$_2$/g-charㆍmin. But those decreased over those range due to the pore shrinkage. The steam activation method was superior in efficiency to carbon dioxide activation method.

  • In this study, we used coal based activated carbons as starting material and phenolic resin (PR) as a bonding agent to prepare spherical shaped activated carbons. The textural properties of SAC were characterized by BET surface area, XRD, SEM, iodine adsorption, strength intensity and pressure drop. According to the results, the spherical activated carbon prepared with activated carbon and PR at a ratio of 60:40 was found to have the best formation of spherical shape, which was found in sample SAC40. After activation, SAC40 has high BET surface area, iodine adsorption capability and strength value, and lowest pressure drop.
