  • In this paper, we manufactured silsesquiaznae (SSQZ)-coated carbon nanotube (CNT) surface heating elements, which allowed stable heating at high temperatures. The prepared composite sheet was confirmed by FE-SEM that the SSQZ fully coated the surface of CNT sheet. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the silicon carbonitride (SiCN) ceramic formed by heat treatment of 800℃ have no defects found and maintain intact structure. The CNT/SiCN composite sheet was able to achieve higher thermal stability than raw CNT sheets in both nitrogen and air atmosphere. Finally, the CNT/SiCN composite sheet was possible to heat up at a temperature of over 700℃ in the atmosphere, and the re-heating was successfully operated after cooling.

  • Multiscale hybrid composites, which consist of polymeric resins, microscale fibers and nanoscale reinforcements, have drawn significant attention in the field of advanced, high-performance materials. Despite their advantages, multiscale hybrid composites show challenges associated with nanomaterial dispersion, viscosity, interfacial bonding and load transfer, and orientation control. In this paper, carbon nanotube(CNT)/carbon fiber(CF)/polycarbonate(PC) multiscale hybrid composite were fabricated by a solution process to overcome the difficulties associated with controlling the melt viscosity of thermoplastic resins. The dependence of CNT loading was studied by varying the method to add CNTs, i.e., impregnation of CF with CNT/PC/solvent solution and impregnation of CNT-coated CF with PC/solvent solution. In addition, hybrid composites were fabricated through surfactant-aided CNT dispersion followed by vacuum filtration. The morphologies of the surfaces of hybrid composites, as analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, revealed the quality of PC impregnation depends on the processing method. Dynamic mechanical analysis was performed to evaluate their mechanical performance. It was analyzed that if the position of the value of tan ${\delta}$ is closer to the ideal line, the adhesion between polymer and carbon fiber is stronger. The effect of mechanical interlocking has a great influence on the dynamic mechanical properties of the composites with CNT-coated CF, which indicates that coating CF with CNTs is a suitable method to fabricate CNT/CF/PC hybrid composites.

  • Recently transparent electrodes using carbon nanotube (CNT) have been studied actively to replace conventional ITO. In this work, CNT or ITO coated poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were prepared by controlling the surfaces since the cohesion degree depends upon drying conditions. As transparent electrode application, 3 drying temperatures were set as 20, 80, and $120^{\circ}C$ to produce the change of surface properties. Interfacial durability and electrical properties of prepared transparent electrodes were evaluated by electrical resistance measurement. Surface change with changing drying temperature was observed by FE-SEM, whereas the transparency change was measured by UV-spectroscopy. The electronic properties of nanoparticle coated surface were evaluated using cyclic voltametry method upon the surface change with controlled drying temperature. Durability of CNT coated surfaces was better than ITO coated ease. As drying temperature increased, better coated surface was prepared due to improved cohesion among nanoparticles, which resulted in increased electrical properties.

  • This paper conducted the study on the electromagnetic and mechanical applicability of CNT-coated glass fiber for wind blades. Large-size wind blade has the serious pending problems to meet the target, such as interfering radar signals, increasing weights, and increasing repair costs. In this paper, we are suggesting the CNT-coated glass fiber in order to overcome these problems. First, the CNTs were strongly coated on the surfaces of glass fiber by suggested coating process, and the CNT-coated glass fiber/epoxy composites were fabricated by Va-RTM process. We designed and fabricated a radar absorbing structure using the CNT-coated glass fiber, which showed over 90% radar absorbing performance between 8.3 and 12.1 GHz frequency. In addition, we confirmed the improvement of mechanical properties on the strength and modulus of tensile, compressive, and in-plane shear.

  • In this paper, we fabricated flexible CNT/PVDF (carbon nanotube / polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric composite device with flexible poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) conducting polymer electrode using spray coating method. We tried to improve the piezoelectric performance from the CNT/PVDF composite film by enhancing electrical conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS electrodes. Electrical conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS electrode was enhanced by dipping it into the EG (ethylene glycol) solvent. Changes of chemical composition of the PEDOT:PSS electrode were analyzed with the dipping time by XPS (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) in terms of oxygen (O1s). Finally, Piezoelectric performances such as output voltage and current were measured with the dipping time. We found that enhanced electrical conductivity of the PEDOT:PSS electrodes resulted in improvement of the piezoelectric performance of the CNT/PVDF films.

  • We report a new fabrication process for high performance triode type CNT field emitters and their superior electrical properties. The CNT-based triode-type field emitter structure was fabricated by the conventional semiconductor processes. The keys of the fabrication process are spin-on-glass coating and trim-and-leveling of the carbon nanotubes grown in trench structures by employing a chemical mechanical polishing process. They lead to strong adhesion and a uniform distance from the carbon nanotube tips to the electrode. The measured emission property of the arrays showed a remarkably uniform and high current density. The gate leakage current could be remarkably reduced by coating of thin $SiO_{2}$ insulating layer over the gate metal. The field enhancement factor(${\beta}$) and emission area(${\alpha}$) were calculated from the F-N plot. This process can be applicable to fabrication of high power CNT vacuum transistors with good electrical performance.

  • We investigated tribological characteristics of diamond-like carbon (DLC) in a condition with carbon nanotube (CNT) content of 1wt% in aqueous solution. Si-DLC films were deposited by radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) process on Al6061 aluminum alloy. In this study, the deposition of DLC films was carried out in vacuum with a chamber pressure of 10-5 to 10-3 Torr achieved by mechanical pump followed by turbo molecular pump. The surface adsorbed oxygen on the Aluminum substrates was removed by passing Ar gas for 10 minutes. The RF power was maintained at 500W throughout the experiment. A buffer layer of HMDSO was deposited on the substrate to improve the adhesion of DLC coating. At this point CH4 gas was introduced in the chamber using gas flow controller and DLC coating was deposited on the buffer layer along with HMDSO for 50 min. The thickness of 1 ${\mu}m$ was obtained for DLC films on aluminum substrates The tribological properties of as synthesized DLC films were analyzed by wear test in the presence of dry air, water and lubricant such as CNT ink.

  • Recently the solution-based thin film technology has often been treated in the field of device fabrication owing to easy process and convenience for the development of various semiconductor devices and sensors. We deposited on glass substrate single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs)/silane hybrid thin films by multiple spray-coating which is one of solution-based processes, and examined their electrical response for humidity. Generally silane binders which are often mixed in carbon nanotube (CNT) solution to adhere CNTs to substrate well form easily each own functionalized group on the surface of CNTs after they are hardened by way of the hydrolysis reaction. In this work, we investigated how silane binders (TEOS (tetraethoxy silane), MTMS (methyltrimethoxysilane) and VTMS (vinyltrimethoxysilane)) in CNT thin films make effect to their electrical response on humidity. As the result, we found that the resistance in the samples using TEOS was changed dramatically while it was almost invariant in the samples using MTMS and VTMS for increasing humidity.

  • The $SnO_2$ thin films doped with Pd and CNT as $NO_2$ gas sensor were prepared by spin coating and then the $NO_2$ gas response of these films were evaluated under $1ppm{\sim}5ppm\;NO_2$ concentration and operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. It was found that the sensor resistance was increased with $NO_2$ exposure and $NO_2$ concentration. The 3wt% Pd doped sample showed a sensitivity of 26.5 which was 10 times higher than that of pure $SnO_2$. And also the sensitivity of CNT doped sample increased with CNT content and it had 72 when 0.225 wt% of CNT was added under 5ppm $NO_2$ concentration.

  • CNT and permalloy composite plating was investigated. CNTs were pretreated prior to electroplating to disassemble the tangled CNT lumps. The ball milling as a physical pretreatment and the acid treatment as a chemical pretreatment were used. 10M nitric acid and 10 M sulfuric acid were used for the chemical pretreatment. Sulfuric acid was more effective than nitric acid to disassemble CNT lumps. To disperse CNT in the solution, surfactants were used. SDS, Triton X-100 and PAA were used for this purpose. More CNTs were incorporated in permalloy coating when PAA was used as a surfactant. The surface morphologies were observed with FESEM after electroplating CNT and permalloy. The current densities were varied from 10 to $80\;mA/cm^2$ and the concentration of PAA was fixed at 2 g/L. The optimum current density without surface cracks was $20\;mA/cm^2$. The crystallinity of the deposit was analyzed with XRD and the surface hardness was analyzed with Vicker's hardness tester. The corrosion behavior was analyzed with polarization plot. The physical properties of permalloy were not improved with CNT composite plating.
