  • Compressed natural gas (CNG) composite vessels for vehicles have been generally made of 34CrMo4 for a inner liner part and E-glass/epoxy for a composite layer part. But, there is a problem of material loss of CNG composite vessels used in vehicles due to the design of excessive thickness of the liner. And, light weight of the CNG composite vessel is required for improving fuel efficiency. In this study, optimal design for CNG composite pressure vessel was performed by using basalt fiber, which is the environment-friendly material having a good mechanical strength. The optimal thickness of each part (inner liner and composite layer) was determined by theoretical analysis and FEA for satisfying structural safety and lightweight of the vessel. Also, for improving fatigue life, optimal autofrettage pressure was derived from FEA results.

  • In this study, CNG composite vessel is analyzed by using coupled model with liner and composite layer. For the coupled model, a method using theoretical analysis and FEA is suggested: elastic solution for laminated tube is used for theoretical analysis of the composite vessel, FEA is performed to the model of CNG composite vessel in actual conditions. On the basis of these results, optimal thickness and winding angle of the composite layer considering the material properties and thickness of the liner are determined. The results of theoretical analysis and FEA are compared with those carried out in previous studies for verifying the suggested analysis method.

  • Abstract The optimization is performed to reduce the mass of CNG pressure vessel reinforced with composite materials in the hoop direction. An axisymmetric shell element which takes into account the layered liner and hoop composite materials is thus developed and incorporated into a program Axicom. The accuracy of the program is then verified using the 4 noded element in ANSYS. Three different cases of optimization are then performed using the Axicom: (1) uniform hoop thickness, (2) varying hoop thickness, and (3) varying the ply angles and accordingly the thickness. Compared with a traditional method, cases (2) and (3) were found to be very effective in reducing the thickness and cost of the hoop composite materials by about 80% without sacrificing the safety factors.

  • The fiber reinforced composite material is widely used in the multi-industrial field where the weight reduction of the infrastructure is demanded because of their high specific modulus and specific strength. Pressure vessels using this composite material have two main merits which are to cut down energy by reducing weight and to have long-term life due to corrosion resistance. In this paper, we developed optimal design module of laminate for CNG composite pressure vessel winding E-glass/epoxy based on Von-Mises yield criterion, Tsai-Hill theory and stress ratio using finite element method and ANSYS RSM(Response Surface Method).

  • The bus using compressed natural gas(CNG) trend to be extended in use internationally as optimal counter-plan for reducing discharge gas of light oil due to high concern about environment. But, Composit pressure vessels(CPV) to be equipped with CNG bus is always involved in the point that safety accidents happen due to having compressed natural gas. In this report, we analysis the cause of CPV bursting accident by reviewing design and manufacture factor and suggest preventive measure through this case.

  • Acoustic emission (AE) is one of the most powerful techniques for detecting damages and identify damage location during operations. However, in case of the source location technique, there is some limitation in conventional AE technology, because it strongly depends on wave speed in the corresponding structures having heterogeneous composite materials. A compressed natural gas(CNG) pressure vessel is usually made of carbon fiber composite outside of vessel for the purpose of strengthening. In this type of composite material, locating impact damage sources exactly using conventional time arrival method is difficult. To overcome this limitation, this study applied the previously developed Contour D/B map technique to four types of CNG storage tanks to identify the source location of damages caused by external shock. The results of the identification of the source location for different types were compared.

  • Forensic Engineering is the art and science of professionals qualified to serve as engineering experts in courts of law or in arbitration proceedings. Buses using compressed natural gas (CNG) trend to be extended in use internationally as optimal counterplan for reducing discharge gas of light oil due to high concern about environment. However, CNG buses is equipped with composite pressure vessels (CPVs); since the CPVs contain compressed natural gas, the risks in the case of accident is very high. In this study, the bursting test for the pressure vessel depending on the heat treatment conditions of the vessel in which the actual ruptured accident occurred, after the bursting test, the fracture pattern analysis had performed. The mechanical materials properties test using Instrumented Indentation Test had performed to confirm the mechanical properties for each heat treatment cases. Also, the fractography analysis and metallographic analysis had performed to find out the difference of each heat treatment case. By comparing normal vessel with abnormal vessel which have defect of heat treatment conditions in term of the bursting patterns and characteristics of containers using various forensic engineering methods, especially, it is possible to understand how important the heat treatment process is in the high pressure vessel unlike any product.

  • The objective of this study is to develop and commercialize an on-board fuel storage system for CNG vehicles. A type 4 vessel is made of resin-impregnated continuous filament windings on a polyamide (PA6) liner. In particular, this study localized the PA6 liner's fabrication and development. To analyze the filament winding, a specimen test was performed, and the results were verified values obtained using finite element analysis. In this study, the filament winding and fibers were optimized for a 207 bar composite cylinder in a compressed natural gas vehicle.

  • The fiber reinforced composite material is widely used in the multi-industrial field where the weight reduction of the infrastructure is demanded because of their high specific modulus and specific strength. It has two main merits which are to cut down energy by reducing weight and to prevent explosive damage preceding to the sudden bursting which is generated by the pressure leakage condition. Therefore, Pressure vessels using this composite material in comparison with conventional metal vessels can be applied in the field such as defense industry, aerospace industry and rocket motor case where lightweight and the high pressure are demanded. In this paper, for nonlinear finite element analysis of E-glass/epoxy filament winding composite pressure vessel receiving an internal pressure, the standard interpretation model is developed by using the ANSYS, general commercial software, which is verified as the accuracy and useful characteristic of the solution based on Auto LISP and ANSYS APDL. Both the preprocessor for doing exclusive analysis of filament winding composite pressure vessel and postprocessor that simplifies result of analysis have been developed to help the design engineers.

  • Three failure cases of CNG composite vessels were reported since after January 2005. The 1st and 2nd accidents were indebted to vessel defect and installation mistake. The 3rd was caused by gas leak at pipe connections. In this paper various aspects were studied based on information of the three failure analysis, which must be improved for better safety of the CNG bus system. Overpressure region caused by vessel explosion was theoretically predicted and also assessed by PHAST program. Explosion of 120 l vessel under 20 MPa is equivalent to 1.2 kg TNT explosion. The predicted value by PHAST was more serious than theoretical one. However, actual consequence of explosion was much less than both of the predicted consequences. Since the CNG vessel was designed by the performance based design methodology, it is difficult to verify whether the required process and tests were properly conducted or not after production. If material toughness is not enough, the vessel should be weak in brittle fracture at early in the morning of winter season since the metal temperature can be lower than the transition temperature. If autofrettage pressure is not correct, fatigue failure due to tensile stress during repeated charging is possible. One positive aspect is that fire did not ocurred after vessel failure. This may be indebted to fast diffusion of natural gas which hindered starting fire.
