A manufacturing method has been devised to prepare novel heterogeneous cation exchange membranes by mixing ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers with a commercial cation exchange resin. Optimum material characteristics, mixture ratios and manufacturing conditions have been worked out for achieving favorable membrane performance. Ion exchange capacity, electrical resistance, water uptake, swelling ratio and tensile strength properties were measured. SEM analysis was used to monitor morphology. Effects of vinyl acetate (VA) content, melt index (MI) and ion exchange resin content on properties of heterogeneous cation exchange membranes have been discussed. An application test was carried out by mounting a selected membrane in a membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) system to investigate its desalination capability. 0.92 meq/g of ion exchange capacity, $8.7{\Omega}.cm^2$ of electrical resistance, $40kgf/cm^2$ of tensile strength, 19% of swelling ratio, 42% of water uptake, and 56.4% salt removal rate were achieved at best. VA content plays a leading role on the extent of physical properties and performance; however, MI is important for having uniform distribution of resin grains and achieving better ionic conductivity. Overall, manufacturing cost has been suppressed to 5-10% of that of homogeneous ion exchange membranes.

Intertidal community recovery and resilience were investigated with quantitative and qualitative perspectives as a function of disturbance timing. The study was conducted in a lower intertidal rock bed of the southern coast of South Korea. Six replicates of artificial disturbance of a $50cm{\times}50cm$ area were made by clearing all visible organisms on the rocky substrate in four seasons. Each of the seasonally cleared plots was monitored until the percent cover data reached the control plot level. There was a significant difference among disturbance timing during the recovery process in terms of speed and community components. After disturbances occurred, Ulva pertusa selectively preoccupied empty spaces quickly (in 2-4 months) and strongly (50-90%) in all plots except for the summer plots where non-Ulva species dominated throughout the recovery period. U. pertusa acted as a very important biological variable that determined the quantitative and qualitative recovery capability of a community. The qualitative recovery of communities was rapid in summer plots where U. pertusa did not recruit and the community recovery rate was the lowest in winter plots where U. pertusa was highly recruited with a long duration of distribution. In this study, U. pertusa was a pioneer species while being a dominant species and acted as a clearly negative element in the process of qualitative recovery after disturbance. However, the negative effect of U. pertusa did not occur in summer plots, indicating that disturbance timing should be considered as a parameter in understanding intertidal community resilience in temperate regions with four distinct seasons.
Recently, as a demand for the portable device is surged, there are needs to develop a new fuel cell system for replacing the conventionally used secondary battery. For this purpose, it becomes important to develop direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) that uses formic acid as a fuel. The formic acid can offer typical advantages such as excellent non-toxicity of the level to be used as food additive, smaller crossover flux through electrolyte, and high reaction capability caused by high theoretical electromotive force (EMF). With the typical merits of formic acid, the efforts for optimizing reaction catalyst and cell design are being made to enhance performance and long term stability of DFAFC. As a result, to date, the DFAFC having the power density of more than $300mW/cm^2$ was developed. In this paper, basic performing theory and configuration of DFAFC are initially introduced and future opportunities of DFAFC including the development of catalyst for the anode electrode and electrolyte, and design for the optimization of cell structure are discussed.

Epoxy/$BaTiO_3$composite capacitor films with excellent stability at room temperature, uniform thickness, and electrical properties over a large area ware successfully fabricated. The composite capacitor films with good film formation capability and easy process ability were made from epoxy resin developed for ACF as a matrix and two kinds of $BaTiO_3$powders as fillers to increase the dielectric constant of the composite film. The crystal structure of the powders and its effects on dielectric constant of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). And the optimum amount of dispersant, phosphate ester, was determined by viscosity measurement of suspension. DSC and dielectric property tests were conducted to decide the right curing temperature and the optimum amount of the curing agent. As a result, the capacitors of 7 $\mu \textrm{m}$ thick film with 10 nF/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and low leakage current were successfully demonstrated.

Power semiconductor devices required the low on-resistance and high breakdown voltage. Wide band-gap materials opened a new technology of the power devices which promised a thin drift layer at an identical breakdown voltage. The diamond had the wide band-gap of 5.5 eV which induced the low power loss, high breakdown capability, low intrinsic carrier generation, and high operation temperature. We investigated the p-type pseudo-vertical diamond Schottky barrier diodes using a numerical simulation. The impact ionization rate was material to calculating the breakdown voltage. We revised the impact ionization rate of the diamond for adjusting the parallel-plane breakdown field at 10 MV/cm. Effects of the field plate on the breakdown voltage was also analyzed. A conventional diamond Schottky barrier diode without field plate exhibited the high forward current of 0.52 A/mm and low on-resistance of $1.71{\Omega}-mm$ at the forward voltage of 2 V. The simulated breakdown field of the conventional device was 13.3 MV/cm. The breakdown voltage of the conventional device and proposed devices with the $SiO_2$ passivation layer, anode field plate (AFP), and cathode field plate (CFP) was 680, 810, 810, and 1020 V, respectively. The AFP cannot alleviate the concentration of the electric field at the cathode edge. The CFP increased the breakdown voltage with evidences of the electric field and potential. However, we should consider the dielectric breakdown because the ideal breakdown field of the diamond is higher than that of the $SiO_2$, which is widely used as the passivation layer. The real breakdown voltage of the device with CFP decreased from 1020 to 565 V due to the dielectric breakdown.

Purpose: Pineapple is now the third most important tropical fruit in world production after banana and citrus. Phytosanitary irradiation is recognized as a promising alternative treatment to chemical fumigation. However, most of the phytosanitary irradiation studies have dealt with physiochemical properties and its efficacy. Accurate dose calculation is crucial for ensuring proper process control in phytosanitary irradiation. The objective of this study was to optimize phytosanitary irradiation treatment of pineapple in various radiation sources using Monte Carlo simulation. Methods: 3-D geometry and component densities of the pineapple, extracted from CT scan data, were entered into a radiation transport Monte Carlo code (MCNP5) to obtain simulated dose distribution. Radiation energy used for simulation were 2 MeV (low-energy) and 10 MeV (high-energy) for electron beams, 1.25 MeV for gamma-rays, and 5 MeV for X-rays. Results: For low-energy electron beam simulation, electrons penetrated up to 0.75 cm from the pineapple skin, which is good for controlling insect eggs laid just below the fruit surface. For high-energy electron beam simulation, electrons penetrated up to 4.5 cm and the irradiation area occupied 60.2% of the whole area at single-side irradiation and 90.6% at double-side irradiation. For a single-side only gamma- and X-ray source simulation, the entire pineapple was irradiated and dose uniformity ratios (Dmax/Dmin) were 2.23 and 2.19, respectively. Even though both sources had all greater penetrating capability, the X-ray treatment is safer and the gamma-ray treatment is more widely used due to their availability. Conclusions: These results are invaluable for optimizing phytosanitary irradiation treatment planning of pineapple.
The Preparation and electrochemical characterization of anion-exchange membranes containing pyridinium groups were performed. As a result, the pyridinium membranes showed good electrochemical properties, comparable to those of the commercial membranes, with electrical resistance of less than $3.0 {\Xi}cm^2$ in a 0.5 mol $dm^{-3}$ NaCl and high ionic permselectivity (the transport number of $Cl^-$ ions being 0.97). Moreover, water splitting in the membranes containing pyridinium group was about two or three order of magnitude lower than those in the commercial membranes (e.g. AM-1, Tokuyama Crop., Japan) at the same current density because the resonance effedt in the quaternary aromatic pyridinium group contributed to their molecular stability. In addition, the electrodialytic properties of the pyridinium membranes were evaluated in a semi-pilot scale.

In this paper, a power amplifier module for WCDMA base-station applications is designed and implemented using GaN field-effect transistors (FETs), which uses an envelope tracking bias system. The designed module consists of an high gain MMIC amplifier, a driver amplifier, a power amplifier, and bias circuits for envelope tracking applications. Especially, a FET bias sequencing circuit and two isolators are integrated for stable RF operations. All circuits are assembled within a single housing, so its dimension is just $17.8{\times}9.8{\times}2.0\;cm3$. Measured results show that the developed power amplifier module has good envelope tracking capability: the power-added efficiency of 35% at the output power range from 30dBm to 40dBm over a wide range of drain bias.

The mechanical and electrochemical properties of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-coated Rayon separator were characterized using potassium polyacrylate (PAAK)-KOH electrolyte. The supercapacitive properties of activated carbon supercapacitor adopting the Rayon/PEO separator and PAAK-KOH electrolyte was also tested. As the PEO content increased, the mechanical strength increased. Room-temperature ionic conductivity of over $10^{-2}S\;cm^{-1}$ was obtained at the PEO content lower than 5 wt.%, applicable to a supercapacitor. As a result, the specific capacitance at $1000mV\;s^{-1}$ of the activated carbon supercapacitor adopting the Rayon/PEO separator and PAAK-KOH electrolyte was highly stable after 1000th cycle. This was due to high rate-capability provided by the fact that PEO coating could fix the entanglements among fiber filaments of Rayon.

With the change of the agricultural environment (increased rice production, decreased rice consumption, and rice production policies), converting paddy fields into upland fields is an increasing trend. In terms of conversion into upland fields, subsurface drainage is one of the most important factors for good field crop growth. This study evaluates the performance of a subsurface drainage culvert system in paddy fields and reclaimed lands. The obtained results are briefly summarized as follows: 1) After a comparative evaluation of several subsurface drainage culvert systems, including excavated subsurface drainage and non-excavated subsurface drainage types, type 3 (non-excavated, perforated drain pipe 50 mm, filter mat B50 cm, subsoiling 70 cm and culvert spacing 5 m) shows relatively high values among four types in terms of effectiveness (subsurface discharge capability) and economic efficiency (construction cost). 2) Type 3 has proven that it is suitable for design standards of discharge capacity through field tests performed in paddy fields (three sites: Gong-geom, Gae-san, Juk-san) and reclaimed lands (two sites: Gum-ho, Mi-am). 3) In the experiment of Sesamum indicum growth according to the existence of a drainage system, Sesamum indicum growth with a subsurface drainage culvert system had good value in terms of plant shoot and root length, shoot fresh and dry weight, and root fresh and dry weight).
