  • Objective: This study is performed to investigate the trend of health care (HC) utilization among cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) during 2007-2016 by using data from the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS). Methods: The KNHIS data were reorganized to count a specific patient only once for a specific year. Cleft type (cleft lip [CL], cleft palate [CP], and cleft lip and palate [CLP]), sex, and age at HC utilization were investigated. The study period was divided into the first half (2007-2011) and the last half (2012-2016). The utilization number and rate per 1,000 population were calculated for the total population and for new-born patients. Independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used for statistical analyses. Results: The total CL/P population (n = 48,707) comprised 19.2% CLP, 35.5% CL, and 45.3% CP (CLP < CL < CP; p < 0.001). Their HC utilization rate increased from 0.066 in 2007 to 0.118 in 2016. The new-born patient population (n = 7,617) comprised 18.6% CLP, 30.4% CL, and 51.0% CP (CLP < CL < CP; p < 0.001). Their HC utilization rate increased from 1.12 in 2007 to 1.74 in 2016. An examination of the utilization number and rate among new-born patients revealed CP exhibited a female-dominant pattern (all p < 0.01), while CL and CLP exhibited a male-dominant pattern (all p < 0.01). However, utilization number showed no difference by sex and cleft type between 2007-2011 and 2012-2016. Conclusions: These results might serve as a guideline for HC utilization among patients with CL/P.

  • Sepsis, a serious clinical problem, is characterized by a systemic inflammatory response to infection and leads to organ failure. Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling is intimately implicated in hyper-inflammatory responses and tissue injury during sepsis. Histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors have been reported to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the hepatoprotective mechanisms of trichostatin A (TSA), a HDAC inhibitor, associated with TLR signaling pathway during sepsis. The anti-inflammatory properties of TSA were assayed in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Polymicrobial sepsis was induced in mice by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), a clinically relevant model of sepsis. The mice were intraperitoneally received TSA (1, 2 or 5 mg/kg) 30 min before CLP. The serum and liver samples were collected 6 and 24-h after CLP. TSA inhibited the increased production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ and interleukin (IL)-6 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. TSA improved sepsis-induced mortality, attenuated liver injury and decreased serum TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-6 levels. CLP increased the levels of TLR4, TLR2 and myeloid differentiation primary response protein 88 (MyD88) protein expression and association of MyD88 with TLR4 and TLR2, which were attenuated by TSA. CLP increased nuclear translocation of nuclear factor kappa B and decreased cytosolic inhibitor of kappa B ($I{\kappa}B$) protein expression, which were attenuated by TSA. Moreover, CLP decreased acetylation of $I{\kappa}B$ kinase (IKK) and increased association of IKK with $I{\kappa}B$ and TSA attenuated these alterations. Our findings suggest that TSA attenuates liver injury by inhibiting TLR-mediated inflammatory response during sepsis.

  • Freezing and drought tolerances in plants are very important for survival in the desert. In an effort to reduce desertifcation in Gobi, a molecular breeding of Artemisia adamsii using the CLP (chitinase like protein, antifreeze protein) and Dhn5 (dehydrin5) genes from barley is performed by introducing them into Artemisia adamsii via Agrobacteria. We had found an optimal combinatorial concentration of hormones at 0.05mg/L of NAA and 0.5mg/L of BA for growth of callus in Artemisia adamsii. In addition, the higher rate of callus induction using hypocotyl as explant was observed comparing to explants of stem and leaf. There were some variations in the level of the proteins expressed among the transgenic lines such that the lines of CLP(CS1-5, 1-7,4-4) and Dhn5(DS2-2, 2-3) lines produce the protein to higher levels. The transgenic lines showing a higher level of Dhn5 exhibited better growth than nontransgenic callus in presence of 10 and 20% PEG. In case of the CLP tansgenic lines, both CS1-5 and CS1-7 showed a higher level of freezing tolerance determined by ion leakage test.

  • In this study the problems of cell marking method used in the field of ATM network traffic control are presented. Also an extended cell marking method considering the user level priority is proposed. The conventional traffic monitoring schemes set the CLP bit of a cell to 1 only under the circumstance of the violation of traffic contract. It causes that the number of low level cells increases and the levels of cells are lowered regardless of the user level priority. The three level priority control method combining FCI bit with CLP bit has also been proposed. It divides CLP=0 cells into two levels. Consequently, the proposed method preserves more cells in high level than the conventional one and the real loss of high level cells can be reduced. The performance of the proposed scheme has also been analyzed by the PBS(partial buffer sharing) with two thresholds for the proposed three levels. The result shows that the PBS with two thresholds can give more efficient control than the scheme with no priority, or the PBS with one threshold.

  • This paper describes a new fading compensation scheme for Wireless ATM(WATM) sytem using pilot symbols. We have carried out a simulation for bit error rate(BER) and cell loss probability(CLP) to analyze the performance of a new scheme. As the resutls, BER performance we improved by means of HEC only above 3 dB of $E_{b}/N_{0}$ in AWGN, but not at all in fading environment. However, by using a new fading compenstion scheme with HEC, BER performance degraded below to 1 dB of $E_{b}/N_{0}$ in AWGN, but BER and CLP performances in WATM system were improved remarkably, and meeted at CLP performance criterion for K=10 dB rician fading. Also, code rate will be high and harware size of codec will be small by using this new scheme with HEC OR FEC.

  • In general, requirements for QoS are different according to the type of services in wire-line and wireless ATM networks, and real-time video service is more sensitive to cell transmission delay than to cell loss. Existing handoff schemes emphasizing prevention of cell loss had limitations in cell transmission delay to satisfy QoS. In this paper, a novel scheme to transmit ATM cells with low CLP(when CLP = 0) prior to others and discarding cells with high CLP(when CLF = 1) in ATM cell header among cells to be forwarded to new base station during handoffs in real-time VBR service is proposed. The proposed scheme is proven to be suitable for the satisfaction of QoS of real-time VBR service and appropriate for fast handoffs by giving high CLP value to less meaningful MPEG frames through simulations.

  • The present study was evaluated the antibacterial effect of the combination of Coptidis rhizoma, Lonicerae Flos, and Paeonia japonica (1:1:1) extracts (CLP1000). Also, the effectiveness of CLP1000, dioctahedral smectite (DHS), and the combination of CLP1000 and DHS (CLPS1000) against E. coli O157:H7 infection was studied using ICR female mice. During the incubation period, the dose of 10% and 20% CLP1000 were inhibited the growth of E. coli O157:H7 by 30% and 47%, respectively. For 7 days after single challenge with E. coli O157:H7, forty female ICR mice were divided into four experimental groups which were orally administered with saline, 10% CLP1000, 10% DHS, and 10% CLPS1000, respectively. On the 3rd day, the number of E. coli O157:H7 in mouse feces was significantly decreased by administration of CLP1000 (p < 0.05), DHS (p < 0.05) and CLPS1000 (p < 0.001). On the 7th day, CLP1000 (p < 0.05) and CLPS1000 p < 0.001) administration significantly decreased the number of E. coli O157:H7. According to the results of the present study, administration of CLPS1000 to mice can reduce the severity of E. coli O157:H7 infection. Also, it is suggested that CLPS100 represents a good candidate for the treatment of enteric infections in domestic animals.

  • Cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) is one of the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies and occurs more frequently in Asian people. Dental abnormalities in number, size, shape, and eruption of teeth are frequently associated with CLP. The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of CLP on number, size, shape and eruption of teeth and to provide basic clinical data for diagnosis and treatment of the CLP patients. With the orthodontic and cleft charts, diagnostic models, orthopantomograms and intraoral x-ray films from 241 CLP patients who visited Dept. of Orthodontics, Seoul National University Dental Hospital, we evaluated the frequency of congenital missing teeth, supernumerary teeth, Impacted teeth, and microdontia. The results were as fellows ; 1. Frequency of congenital missing was relatively high up to $56.8\%$. Congenital missing occurred frequently in the maxillary lateral incisor and the maxillary second premolar. Among the CLP types, frequencies of congenital missing in cleft lip and Palate group and cleft lip and alveolus group were higher than those of cleft lip group and cleft palate group. And bilateral cleft showed higher frequencies than unilateral ones. 2. Supernumerary tooth was shown in $11.2\%$ of CLP patients. It occurred frequently in the area between the maxillary lateral Incisors and the maxillary canine. Among the CLP types, cleft lip group showed relatively most highest frequency. 3. Impaction was shown in $18.3\%$ of CLP patients. It occurred most frequently In the maxillary lateral incisor and the maxillary canine than other teeth. Among the CLP types, cleft lip group and cleft lip and palate group showed most highest frequencies. 4. Microdontia was shown in $15.8\%$ of CLP patients. It occurred the most frequently In the maxillary lateral incisors and maxillary canines. Among the CLP types, cleft lip and alveolus group and cleft lip and palate group showed relatively higher frequencies. There was no microdontia in cleft palate group.

  • The following study was presented to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of peel extracts (PE) from three citrus fruits: Citrus unshiu, Citrus limonia Osbeck and Citrus hallabong. According to this study, cytotoxicity, NO-production and protein levels of iNOS (inducible nitric oxide synthase) in macrophage cell were analyzed, which had been incubated in murine macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 cell of PE from those three citrus fruits. According to Citrus unshiu peel extracts (CUP), Citrus limonia Osbeck peel extracts (CHP) and Citrus hallabong peel extracts (CLP) treatment, the result showed that there was no cell growth inhibited below 2 mg/mL. Comparing the NO-production of the cell with LPS (100 ng/mL) and the treatment without LPS, significant increase of NO-production was detected. However NO-production also showed decrease trend, as the concentration increased. For each treatment, at the concentration of 1 mg/mL, NO-ihibitory activity showed significant result with following order: CUP > CHP > CLP. According to the result from Western blot, the inhibitory activities of iNOS protein from CUP and CHP showed fairly similar performances. Also inhibitory activity of COX-2 showed the following order: CUP > CHP> CLP. There was no doubt that all the treatments of CUP, CHP and CLP have anti-inflammatory effect and also that the inhibitory activity of the CUP treatment was the strongest among those three.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of Curcuma longa L. powder (CLP) on the quality characteristics of a dumpling shell. Dumpling shell samples were prepared with wheat flour and different amounts of CLP were added to them, after which their instrumental characteristics and sensory evaluation were investigated. The gelatinization temperature of the CLP-wheat flours composite increased, whereas its initial viscosity at $95^{\circ}C$, viscosity at $95^{\circ}C$ after 15 min and maximum viscosity all fell with the increasing CLP content, as measured via amylography. As increasing amounts of CLP were added, the L value decreased, whereas the a and b values increased. With regard to the textural characteristics, the CLP additive became harder, more cohesive and adhesive, and less springy. The DPPH free radical scavenging activity increased significantly as the CLP content increased (p<0.05). Overall, the dumpling shells with 3% CLP were preferred over the other samples, as tested via sensory evaluation.
