  • Since regulation or specification for the reinforcing method are quite ambiguous, structural design for the reinforcement can be subjectively and arbitrarily conducted. Thus, reasonable limitation and guide for the quantity of the reinforcement are required for the safe use of the structure after repair. In order to guarantee the safety of the structural member several items should be considered; reinforcing limit to avoid the brittle failure, least required strength of the existing member before reinforcement in order not to fail under the new serviceability load condition when reinforcing steel plates or CFRP sheets are harmed or subjected to fire.

Effectiveness of seismic repairing stages with CFRPs on the seismic performance of damaged RC frames

  • This study aims at evaluating the performance of repairing technique with CFRPs in recovering cyclic performance of damaged columns in flexure in terms of structural response parameters such as strength, dissipated energy, stiffness degradation. A 2/3 scaled substandard reinforced concrete frame was constructed to represent the substandard RC buildings especially in developing countries. These substandard buildings have several structural deficiencies such as strong beam-weak column phenomenon, improper reinforcement detailing and poor material properties. Flexural plastic hinges occurred at the columns ends after testing the substandard specimen under both constant axial load and reversed cyclic lateral loading. Afterwards, the damaged columns were externally wrapped with CFRP sheets both in transverse and longitudinal directions and then retested under the same loading protocol. In addition, ambient vibration measurements were taken from the undamaged, damaged and the repaired specimens at each structural repair steps to identify the effectiveness of each repairing step by monitoring the change in the natural frequencies of the tested specimen. The ambient vibration test results showed that the applied repairing technique with external CFRP wrapping was proved to recover stiffness of the pre-damaged specimen. Moreover, the lateral load capacity of the pre-damaged substandard RC frame was restored with externally bonded CFRP sheets.

Fatigue evaluation and CFRP strengthening of diaphragm cutouts in orthotropic steel decks

  • The cracking at the transverse diaphragm cutout is one of the most severe fatigue failures threatening orthotropic steel decks (OSDs), whose mechanisms and crack treatment techniques have not been fully studied. In this paper, full-scale experiments were first performed to investigate the fatigue performance of polished cutouts involving the effect of an artificial geometrical defect. Following this, comparative experimental testing for defective cutouts strengthened with carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) was carried out. Numerical finite element analysis was also performed to verify and explain the experimental observations. Results show that the combinative effect of the wheel load and thermal residual stress constitutes the external driving force for the fatigue cracking of the cutout. Initial geometrical defects are confirmed as a critical factor affecting the fatigue cracking. The principal stress 6 mm away from the free edge of the cutout can be adopted as the nominal stress of the cutout during fatigue evaluation, and the fatigue resistance of polished cutouts is higher than Grade A in AASHTO specification. The bonded CFRP system is highly effective in extending the fatigue life of the defective cutouts. The present study provides some new insights into the fatigue evaluation and repair of OSDs.

CFRP와 GFRP로 외부 부착된 철근콘크리트보의 장기 처짐 예측 (A Prediction of the Long-Term Deflection of RC Beams Externally Bonded with CFRP and GFRP)

  • 철근콘크리트 구조물은 일반적으로 재료적 특성에 따른 크리프 및 건조수축으로 인하여 장기변형이 발생하며, 이러한 변형으로 인한 구조물의 처짐을 허용 한계 이하로 유지시키는 것이 사용성 확보 측면에서 중요하다 할 수 있다. 노후된 RC보의 성능 개선을 위하여 다양항 보수 보강 방법이 사용되고 있으며 이중 대표적인 방법으로 FRP 외부부착 공법이 있다. 재료적인 성질이 우수한 FRP는 RC구조물의 보강 재료로써 현재 널리 사용되고 있으며, 일시적인 하중 뿐만 아니라 지속 하중 하에서도 향상된 보강 성능을 제공해야 한다. 따라서 FRP가 외부 부착된 RC 부재에 지속 하중이 작용할 때 콘크리트의 크리프 및 건조수축의 영향으로 인한 시간 의존적 장기 거동을 정확히 예측하는 방법이 필요하다. 본 논문에서는 FRP가 외부 부착된 RC보의 장기 처짐 예측을 위해서, CFRP와 GFRP로 보강된 실험체를 제작하고, 25 kN의 지속하중을 470일간 가하여 시간 변화에 따른 처짐을 측정하였다. 또한, 이러한 처짐의 예측을 위하여 ACI-209 code 및 CEB-FIP code에 근거하여 크리프계수와 건조수축변형률을 산정하였으며, EMM과 AEMM을 사용한 ACI-318기준, Branson's method 그리고, Mayer's method를 사용하여 FRP가 외부 부착된 RC보의 장기 처짐을 예측하였다. 실험 결과, CFRP보 보강된 실험체가 가장 높은 장기 사용성을 보였으며, Mayer's method가 장기처짐에 대한 실험값을 가장 근사하게 예측한다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Experimental study on repair of corroded steel beam using CFRP

  • It has been reported that more than thirty five percent of steel bridges in the USA are structurally deficient because of structural degradations. The degraded structures need either full replacement or rehabilitation such that they are able to provide the required services for a longer period of time. The cost for repair in most cases is far less than the cost of replacement. Moreover, repair method generally takes less time than replacement and also reduces service interruption time. Modern advanced composites have been used in aerospace and automotive fields since World War II. In the recent past, because of the high strength-to-weight ratio and high stiffness-to-weight ratio, these composite materials have been introduced to civil engineering infrastructures primarily for repair and rehabilitation of concrete structures. However, only a few preliminary studies on repair of corroded steel structures using theses composite materials are reported in the literature available in the public domain. Thus, in this study, a series of laboratory tests was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of this repair method using carbon fiber reinforced polymer composite. The paper discusses the test method and test results obtained from these tests.

Load carrying capacity of CFRP retrofitted broken concrete arch

  • To reuse a broken plain concrete (PC) arch, a retrofitting method was proposed to ensure excellent structural performances, in which carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) were applied to repair and strengthen the damaged PC arch through bonding and wrapping techniques. Experiments were carried out to reveal the deformation and the load carrying capacity of the retrofitted composite arch. Based on the experiments, repairing and strengthening effects of the CFRP retrofitted broken arch were revealed. Simplified analysing model was suggested to predict the peak load of the CFRP retrofitted broken arch. According to the research, it is confirmed that absolutely broken PC arch can be completely repaired and reinforced, and even behaves more excellent than the intact PC arch when bonded together and strengthened with CFRP sheets. Using CFRP bonding/wrapping technique a novel efficient composite PC arch structure can be constructed, the comparison between rebar reinforced concrete (RC) arch and composite PC arch reveals that CFRP reinforcements can replace the function of steel bars in concrete arch.

Strengthening of concrete damaged by mechanical loading and elevated temperature

  • Despite being one of the most abundantly used construction materials because of its exceptional properties, concrete is susceptible to deterioration and damage due to various factors particularly corrosion, improper loading, poor workmanship and design discrepancies, and as a result concrete structures require retrofitting and strengthening. In recent times, Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites have substituted the conventional techniques of retrofitting and strengthening of damaged concrete. Most of the research studies related to concrete strengthening using FRP have been performed on undamaged test specimens. This contribution presents the results of an experimental study in which concrete specimens were damaged by mechanical loading and elevated temperature in laboratory prior to application of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets for strengthening. The test specimens prepared using concrete of target compressive strength of 28 MPa at 28 days were subjected to compressive and splitting tensile testing up to failure and the intact pieces of the failed specimens were collected for the purpose of repair. In order to induce damage as a result of elevated temperature, the concrete cylinders were subjected to $400^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ temperature for two hours duration. Concrete cylinders damaged under compressive and split tensile loads were re-cast using concrete and rich cement-sand mortar, respectively and then strengthened using CFRP wrap. Concrete cylinders damaged due to elevated temperature were also strengthened using CFRP wrap. Re-cast and strengthened concrete cylinders were tested in compression and splitting tension. The obtained results revealed that re-casting of specimens damaged by mechanical loadings using concrete & mortar, and then strengthened by single layer CFRP wrap exhibited strength even higher than their original values. In case of specimens damaged by elevated temperature, the results indicated that concrete strength is significantly dropped and strengthening using CFRP wrap made it possible to not only recover the lost strength but also resulted in concrete strength greater than the original value.

Effectiveness of some conventional seismic retrofitting techniques for bare and infilled R/C frames

  • The effectiveness of a technique for the repair of reinforced concrete members in combination with a technique for the repair of masonry walls of infilled frames, damaged due to cyclic loading, is experimentally investigated. Three single - story, one - bay, 1/3 - scale frame specimens are tested under cyclic horizontal loading, up to a drift level of 4%. One bare frame and two infilled frames with weak and strong infills, respectively, have been tasted. Specimens have spirals as shear reinforcement. The applied repair technique is mainly based on the use of thin epoxy resin infused under pressure into the crack system of the damaged RC joint bodies, the use of a polymer modified cement mortar with or without a fiberglass reinforcing mesh for the damaged infill masonry walls and the use of CFRP plates to the surfaces of the damaged structural RC members, as external reinforcement. Specimens after repair, were retested in the same way. Conclusions concerning the effectiveness of the applied repair technique, based on maximum cycles load, loading stiffness, and hysteretic energy absorption capabilities of the tested specimens, are drawn and commented upon.

레진으로 접착 보강한 강재보의 거동 (Experimental and Analytical Study on the Steel Beam bonded with CFRP Strip)

  • 이 논문에서는 강재 보와 보강을 위하여 부착한 탄소섬유판의 동일거동을 분석하기 위하여 시험과 유한요소해석을 수행하고, 시험 및 해석 결과를 이용한 분석을 실시하였다. 현재 국내외의 연구에서는 복합재료를 사용한 보수 보강 복구에 대한 사용검토가 많이 연구되어지는 실정에서 섬유보강 복합재료는 얇고 강도가 좋으며 가벼워 구조물의 보강 시에 사하중의 증가를 발생시키지 않고 부재의 치수 증가에도 영향이 없어 매우 유용한 재료로 부각된다. 그러나 노후화에 따른 부착력 저하 등의 문제와 경제성 및 설계상의 어려움으로 사용이 극히 제한적인 부분이다. 이 연구에서는 탄소섬유판이 부착된 단순한 강재보의 성능을 평가하였으며, 부착성능 측면에서는 양호한 사용성능을 가지는 것으로 나타났다. 향후 노후화에 대한 검토가 수행된다면 실제 구조물에 대한 적용에도 문제가 없을 것으로 판단된다.

탄소섬유쉬트(CFRP Sheets)로 보강된 각형강관(HSS)기둥의 유한요소해석 연구 (A Study on Finite Element Methods for HSS(Hollow Square Section) Steel Columns Strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plastic(CFRP) Sheets)

  • 본 연구에서는 탄소섬유쉬트로 보강된 각형강관 기둥의 유한요소 해석결과를 소개하고 있다. 실험체 개수는 총 6개이며, 각형강관에 대해서는 비조밀 단면 단주, 세장판 단면 단주, 비조밀 단면 장주로 구성되어 있다. 실험변수는 탄소섬유쉬트 보강겹수이다. AFRP 스트립과 강재사이의 부착거동과 부착응력-슬립관계를 규명하였다. 총 6개의 실험체에 대하여 ANSYS V.14.0을 사용하여 유한요소해석을 수행하였으며, 파괴모드, 하중-변위곡선, 최대내력, 초기강성에 대해 실험결과와 비교하였다. 끝으로, AISC cold-formed steel structures 기준에 근거하여 세장비에 따른 좌굴응력값을 산정하였으며, 각 단면타입에 대한 좌굴응력값 및 보강효과를 비교하였다.
