The Relationship Between Family Ownership, CEO Demographic Characteristics and Dividend Policy: Evidence from Indonesia

  • The objective of this study is to examine the effect of family ownership and family CEO on the dividend policy of family firms by using the demographic characteristics of the CEO as a moderator. Dividend policy is a decision taken by the firm in determining whether the profits earned by the firm will be distributed to shareholders in the form of dividends or will be reinvested in the company as retained earnings for future internal resources. Using samples from non-financial family firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange in 2013-2017, 93 firms were selected based on adequate data. We also used logit regressions to provide robustness. The results show that family ownership and family CEO have a positive effect on the dividend payout ratio. This finding supports the family income hypothesis. Among CEO demographic characters, CEO age significantly strengthens the positive effect of family CEO on dividend payout ratio. While CEO tenure does not significantly strengthen the positive effect of family CEOs on dividend payout ratios. Meanwhile, leverage, ROA, and firm size significantly affect the dividend payout ratio, but firm age does not significantly affect the dividend payout ratio.

  • This study investigates the effect of chief executive officers (CEO) demographic characteristics such as age, functional experience, education, and gender, on corporate leverage decisions. This study investigates the independent commissioner's role in moderating the relationship between CEO demographic characteristics and leverage decisions. The data used is panel data with a sample of 283 non-financial companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) from 2010-2017. Moderated regression analysis is used as an analytical technique, with the selected model fixed effects model. The results showed that male and young CEOs were more risk-averse, so they tended to use debt more. However, this study found no evidence of the effect of CEO experience and education on leverage. This study finds evidence that independent commissioners reduce the influence of CEO age and gender on leverage decisions. It shows the role of independent commissioners in controlling risk-taking from male and young CEOs related to leverage decisions. These results become input for companies to consider demographic characteristics in choosing a CEO. Also, companies need a board (in this study seen from independent commissioners) that is strong enough to control the CEO regarding risky decision making, such as leverage decisions.

경영자 특성에 따른 R&D 투자와 기업가치 관련성: 벤처기업을 중심으로 (Relationship between R&D Investment and Firm Value by Characteristics of CEO: Focused on Venture Business)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 기업 내 최고의사결정권한을 가진 CEO의 특성이 R&D 투자 결정과 기업가치에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 검증하는 것이다. 구체적으로 CEO의 특성을 나이, 학력, 전공일치, 재직기간으로 측정하여, 이러한 특성이 연구개발투자 및 기업가치에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 2005년부터 2014년까지 코스닥 시장에 상장된 벤처기업을 대상으로 실증 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, CEO의 나이는 적을수록 R&D 투자를 보다 많이 하는 것으로 나타났으며, 나이가 적은 CEO의 R&D 투자는 기업가치와 유의한 양(+)의 상관성을 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, CEO의 학력은 높을수록 R&D 투자를 보다 많이 하는 것으로 나타났고, 교육수준이 높은 CEO의 R&D 투자는 주가와 유의한 양(+)의 관련성을 보였다. 셋째, CEO의 전공과 업종이 일치할수록 R&D 투자는 보다 많이 하는 것으로 나타났으며, CEO의 전공일치도가 높은 기업의 R&D 투자와 주가와의 가치관련성은 보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 CEO의 재직기간은 길수록 R&D 투자에 보다 적극적인 태도를 보였으나, 재직기간이 긴 CEO의 R&D 투자는 기업가치와 유의한 음(-)의 관련성을 보였다. 이와 같은 실증 분석을 통해 벤처기업의 R&D 투자와 기업가치관련성은 CEO의 특성이 반영된다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 CEO의 인구통계학적 특성을 반영한 R&D 투자가 자본시장에서 어떻게 평가 받고 있는지를 실증적으로 검증하였다는 점에 의의가 있다.

SI 기업 CEO의 인적특성과 재임년수에 관한 연구 (The CEO Tenure and Profiles of SI Companies)

  • In this study, we report the summary characteristics of CEOs of SI firms in Korea. In the first part of our paper, age, educational background, and career of CEOs in SI firms are analyzed according to CEO types (owners versus professional managers). In the second part, CEO tenures of Si firms in Korea are compared with those in the U.S. and Japan. We found that CEO tenures of SI firms in Korea are remarkably shorter than those in the U.S. and Japan. In conclusion, we contend that CEO systems in Korean firms should be improved to guarantee the longer tenures especially for professional managers.

CEO Education-Performance Relationship: Evidence from Saudi Arabia

  • The study investigates the association between CEO education and firm performance with a sample of 85 nonfinancial firms listed on the Saudi stock exchange during 2018 applying ordinary least squares method. CEO education is defined by three variables, the level of education, if the degree-granting institution is domestic or foreign, and if the highest degree is in management or other fields of study. Financial performance is measured by return on assets and return on equity. Firm size, age, liquidity and growth are introduced as control variables. The study shows that 58 CEOs of the firms studied are graduates, 38 have obtained their degree from a domestic institution and 44 have a management degree. Graduate CEOs are found to enhance performance. Graduating from a domestic institution influences performance positively. Management degree of CEO does not seem to impact performance. Firm size, liquidity and growth are positively associated with performance. Firm age does not explain performance differences of firms. Results are robust to performance measures. The findings of the study suggest that firms can benefit from a CEO hiring policy that emphasizes on the minimum qualification set as graduation or higher, education from a domestic institution and no undue weight on management qualification.

한국내 외국인투자기업 투자지분율형태와 CEO국적에 따른 고용효과 분석 (A Study on the Employment Effect of Foreign Invested Companies in Korea by Investor Ratio Type and CEO Nationality)

  • 본 연구에서는 우리나라에 진출한 외국인투자기업의 투자지분율차이와 CEO국적별차이가 고용에 어떠한 차이를 미치는지 보기 위해서 실증분석을 하였다. 실증분석을 하기위해, 투자비중, CEO국적, 설립시기, 기업규모등을 독립변수로 사용하였다. 고용증가율(EMPG)을 종속변수로 하여 일원분산분석을 실시하고 회귀분석하였다. INVRATIO는 투자비중을 나타내는 변수로서 1-0%<투자비중<50%, 2-투자비중=50%, 3-50%<투자비중${\leq}100%$을 나타내는 변수이며 CEO국적은 1-한국, 2-공동, 3-외국인을 나타내는 변수이다. 실증분석 결과 투자비중=50%, 50%<투자비중${\leq}100%$에서 0%<투자비중<50%보다 고용을 더 낮게 하는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 CEO국적에 따른 고용행태를 실증 분석한 결과 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 시사점은 투자지분율형태와 CEO국적별에 따른 고용분석을 이론적 검토와 통계적 분석을 함으로써 대한(對韓) 외국인직접투자에서 고용에 미칠 수 있는 영향과 그에 대한 대처방안을 검토할 수 있다는 것이다. 또한 고용에 있어서 향후 투자지분율을 현재보다 더욱 중요하게 고려해야 할 요인이라는 점을 제공했다는 것이다.

게임기업 CEO의 관련사업경험이 경영성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증적 연구 -사회적 자본의 조절효과를 중심으로- (The Empirical Study on Relationship Between Corporate Performance and Related Business Experience of Game Company's CEO : Moderating effect of Social Capital)

  • As the CEO`s of game companies should be ready for the rapid change of technical environment of game industry, highly skilled employees and the social capital become very important factors in doing game business. 2013 Korea Game White Paper shows that many game companies prefer employees with job experience. The social capital and network help game companies get industrial information easily. This study empirically examines the relationship among CEO`s related business experience, corporate performance and social capital based on 134 Korean game companies. CEO`s characteristics are measured by using demographic characteristics including age, amount of education, and prior job experience and psychological characteristics, but this study focuses on related business experience. The results of this study show some significant relationship between the related business experience of CEO and nonfinancial performance of the firm. Secondly, this study verifies the moderating effect of the social capital between the related business experience of CEO and non-financial performance of the firm. The results of the moderating effect of the social capital show that social capital increases the non-financial performance.

서비스경제시대 중소기업 경영자의 기업가지향성과 CEO역량이 경영성과에 미치는 영향 연구 (A study on the effect of entrepreneurship and CEO competency on management performance of SME managers in the service economy era)

  • 인류는 서비스경제시대를 맞이하였다. 새로운 경제는 새로운 경영을 필요로 한다. 새로운 경영의 핵심주체는 최고경영자다. 경영자 의사결정의 결과가 기업의 성과로 나타나며, 미래 성장동력의 기반이 된다. 본 연구는 중소 중견기업 경영자의 CEO역량, 기업가지향성, 경영성과가 서로 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 실증분석 하였다. 연구에선 8개 변수간의 가설이 설정되었다. 또한 그동안 연구되어지지 않았던 기업가지향성과 CEO역량과의 관계도 규명하였다. CEO역량의 측정항목으로 개인효과성, 혁신의지, 기회인식, 정보인식, 관계형성, 사업관리, 리더십, 조직문화, 인적자원관리를, 기업가지향성 측정항목으로 위험감수성, 진취성, 혁신성을 설정하고 본 연구에 부합하게 조작적 정의를 한 후 분석을 진행하였다. 분석 결과 기업가지향성은 경영성과에 유의미한 결과를 도출하지 못했다. 그리고 CEO역량은 경영성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 결과를 나타내었다. 이는 관리적 변인인 CEO역량이 경영성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미친 것으로 판단할 수 있다. 또한 기업가지향성과 CEO역량과의 관계에서도 유의미한 결과가 나타났다. 혁신성, 진취성, 위험감수성이 CEO역량에 긍정적인 결과를 나타낸데 시사점이 있다. 마지막으로, 기업가지향성은 CEO역량을 매개로 경영성과에 통계적으로 유의한 결과를 나타내었다. 연구 당시가 COVID19 바이러스의 세계적 대유행(펜더믹)의 발현시기라는 점에서 본 연구 결과에 주목할 만하다 하겠다. 향후 더욱 변화된 경제환경에서의 CEO관련 요인과 경영성과간의 관계에 대한 심층 연구가 필요하다.

패션기업의 최고경영자 특성과 마케팅 활동이 경영성과에 미치는 효과 (An Effect of CEO Characteristics and Marketing Activities on Management Performance of Fashion Corporate)

  • Purpose - This study aimed to clarify the effects of CEO characteristics and marketing activities on management performance of fashion corporate by using financial statement. Design/methodology/approach - This study collected a sample of total 170 companies that can obtain the corresponding data among fashion manufacturing companies listed on KOSPI. The data of the financial statements reported from 2011 to 2018 were analyzed. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted. Findings - First, the more the number of CEO and the younger the CEO, the more employee welfare and training expenditures of internal marketing. The age of the CEO had a negative effect on all external marketing activities. The CEO number had a negative effect on sales promotion and advertising expenditures, but a positive effect on entertainment expenditure of external marketing. Second, as a effect of marketing activities on management performance, the welfare and training expenditures of internal marketing and entertainment expenditure of external marketing had a positive effect but sales promotion expenditure of external marketing had a negative effect on management performance. Research implications or Originality - Marketing activities that consider the differentiated factors of fashion corporate are necessary. Also, the objective accounting information can provide practical information for fashion industry.

The Impact of Board of Directors' Characteristics on Firm Performance: A Case Study in Jordan

  • This study tested the effect of the board of directors' (BOD) characteristics on the corporate performance of the Jordanian industrial and service companies listed on the Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) during the period 2015-2019. The characteristics of the BOD were measured through the following variables: MO = managerial ownership; CEODU = CEO duality; BI = board independence; GD = gender diversity; ND = nationality diversity; AE = advanced education; BM = board meetings; BSIZ = board size; CSIZ = corporate size; CA = corporate age. The corporate performance was measured by return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE). The corporate size and corporate age were used as control variables. The study sample consisted of 85 industrial and service companies with 425 observations to identify the nature of the effect of the BOD characteristics on performance. This study applied time-series data (panel data), and the multiple linear regression method was used to achieve study objectives. Results showed a positive effect of the study variables on performance, while the corporate age and the education level (BOD members) have a negative effect on performance.
