This paper describes an efficient harmonic-CELP speech coder by taking advantages of harmonic and CELP coders into account. According to frame voicing decision, the proposed harmonic-CELP coder adopts the RP-VSELP coder as a fast CELP in case of an unvoiced frame, or an improved harmonic coder in case of a voiced frame. The proposed coder has main features as follows: simple pitch detection, fast harmonic estimation, variable dimension harmonic vector quantization, perceptual weighting reflecting frequency resolution, fast harmonic synthesis, naturalness control using band voicing, and multi-mode. These features make the proposed coder require very low complexity, compared with HVXC coder To demonstrate the performance of the proposed coder, a 2.4 kbps coder has been implemented and compared with reference coders. From results of informal listening tests, the proposed coder showed good quality while requiring low delay and complexity.

In this paper we propose a multi-codebook structure which can synthesize high quality speech without increasing of CELP coder's computation. We also design a 4.8kbps CELP speech coder with the proposed codebook structure. The proposed multi-codebook structure is made up of basic codebook and the other codebook which Is formed for strengthen spectrum an4 pitch. Multi-codebook structure can represent accurate gains since it represents excitation signals as summation of two kinds of codebooks and uses different codebook gains respectively. Therefore it can provide better speech quality than other conventional structures. In computer simulation of the 4.8kpbs CELP coder designed with the proposed codebook structure its segSNR was 0.81dB more high than the DoD CELP coder of same transmission rates.
Since a codebook-based CELP coder models its excitation signal according to one of several bit rates pre-assigned to codebooks and synthesizes speech signal using codebooks, it can not support encoding of speech signal at an arbitrary bit rate in one encoder. The proposed variable bit rate speech coder encodes the excitation signal based on the bit rate assigned to a present frame of speech using one-dimensional SPIHT and wavelet transform. Also it does't need to model excitation signal (or codebook) to some types as CELP coder, and can encode excitation signal at various bit rates without exact pitch information according to user requirement. As a result, since the coder doesn't have a codebook structure, it has relatively low coder complexity and provides equal or better speech quality compared to G.729 and G.723.1 coder.

This paper presents a dual-rate (2.4/4.0 kbps) Improved Harmonic-CELP(IHC) speech coder based on the EHC(Efficient Harmonic-CELP) which was presented by the authors. The proposed IHC employs the harmonic coding for voiced and the CELP for unvoiced segments. In the IHC, an initial voiced/unvoiced estimate is obtained by the pitch gain and energy. Then, the final V/UV mode is decided by using the frame energy contour. A new harmonic estimation combining peak picking and delta adjustment provides a more reliable harmonic estimation than that in the EHC. In addition, a noise mixing scheme in conjunction with an improved band voicing measurement provides the naturalness of the synthesized speech. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed IHC coder, the coder has been implemented and compared with the 2.0/4.0 kbps HVXC(Harmonic excitation Vector Coding) standardized by MPEG-4. Results of subjective evaluation showed that the proposed IHC coder and produce better speech quality than the HVXC, with only 40% complexity of the HVXC.
This paper presents dispersed-pulse and random codebook for CELP coder. This coder operates on speech frames of 20ms and generates an excitation vector by convoluting dispersion vectors with signed pulses in an algebraic codevector. The improvement of pulse-based fixed codebook is performed at a low bit rate. A high performance fixed-codebook consists of a partial algebraic codebook and a random codebook in unvoiced and stationary noise regions. The proposed CELP coder is quantized with 4kb/s and is compared with G.729 (Bkb/s CS-ACELP). Subjective testing shows better quality than reference coders under some background noise conditions
In this paper, we propose a weighting dependent mixed source model (WD-MSM) coder that is an improved version of a CELP-based mixed source model (C-MSM) coder. The coder classifies speech segments into three types : voiced, unvoiced and mixed. The excitation for a voiced frame is an adaptive source, and the excitation for an unvoiced frame is a stochastic source. The coder has a modified mixed source for a mixed frame. We apply different weighting functions for three classes. Simulation results show that the proposed coder at 4 kbits/s yields very good performance both subjectively and objectively.

In this paper, we present a half rate speech coder using trellis excitation. The coder combines code-excited linear prediction (CELP) system and trellis quantization method using the codebook expansion, and it produces higher speech quality than the typical CELP coder for the same transmission rate. A subjective comparison with 3~8 bit .$\mu$-law PCM indicates that the half rate coder provides speech quality between 5-bit and 6-bit $\mu$-law PCM .
Existing standard speech coders can provide speech communication of high quality while they degrade the performance of speech recognition systems that use the reconstructed speech by the coders. The main cause of the degradation is that the spectral envelope parameters in speech coding are optimized to speech quality rather than to the performance of speech recognition. For example, mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC) is generally known to provide better speech recognition performance than linear prediction coefficient (LPC) that is a typical parameter set in speech coding. In this paper, we propose a speech coder using MFCC instead of LPC to improve the performance of a server-based speech recognition system in network environments. However, the main drawback of using MFCC is to develop the efficient MFCC quantization with a low-bit rate. First, we explore the interframe correlation of MFCCs, which results in the predictive quantization of MFCC. Second, a safety-net scheme is proposed to make the MFCC-based speech coder robust to channel error. As a result, we propose a 8.7 kbps MFCC-based CELP coder. It is shown from a PESQ test that the proposed speech coder has a comparable speech quality to 8 kbps G.729 while it is shown that the performance of speech recognition using the proposed speech coder is better than that using G.729.

This paper focuses on how spectrum information can be represented efficiently in a very low bit rate CELP speech coder. To achieve the goal, an LPC cepstral coefficients VQ scheme representing the spectrum information in a CELP coder is proposed. To represent the spectrum information using LPC cepstrums, three different cepstral distance measures having different spectral meanings in the frequency domain are considered, and their performances are compared and analyzed. The experimental results show that spectrum information in low bit rate CELP coders can be represented very efficiently using the proposed LPC cepstral vector quantization scheme.
In this paper, we present a new wavelet transform-based CELP coder, called band selection wavelet transform CELP (BS-WTCELP) operated at 4.8 kbps. The proposed algorithm uses a band selection scheme of frequency bands of wavelet transform and selective vector quantization (VQ). The band selection and selective VQ structure is implemented by using a classified VQ structure. The proposed algorithm has about 0.5-1.0 dB improvement in segmental SNR compared with the conventional CELP that uses the random codebook search, while is has significantly reduced computational and storage complexity. Many experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm is more suitable for most real-applications than the conventional CELP and wavelet transform CELP.
