A New Blind Beamforming Procedure Based on the Conjugate Gradient Method for CDMA Mobile Communications

  • The objective of this paper is to present an adaptive algorithm for computing the weight vector which provides a beam pattern having its maximum gain along the direction of the mobile target signal source in the presence of interfering signals within a cell. The conjugate gradient method (CGM) is modified in such a way that the suboptimal weight vector is produced with the computational load of O(16N), which has been found to be small enough for the real-time processing of signals in most land mobile communications with the digital signal processor (DSP) off the shelf, where N denotes the number of antenna elements of the array. The adaptive procedure proposed in this paper is applied to code division multiple access (CDMA) mobile communication system to show its excellent performance in terms of signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR), bit error rate (BER), and capacity, which are enhanced by about 7 dB, ${\frac{1}{100}}$ times, and 7 times, respectively, when the number of antenna elements is 6 and the processing gain is 20 dB.

Design for Microstrip Patch Antenna with Dual Frequency and Dual Polarization for W-CDMA System

  • This paper proposes a design for microstrip patch antenna with dual resonance and dual polarization fed by proximity coupled quarter wavelength stub. The antenna characteristics are analyzed by the FDTD method with Mur's 2nd order ABC. From the simulation results based on the FDTD method, frequency characteristics of structure parameters such as the patch size and the offset feed are investigated. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results, and the comparison shows reasonable agreement for a design frequency.

  • In this paper, we present a performance analysis of the smart antenna test-bed operating in a IS2000 1x through a test-bed that has been implemented on a DSP(TMS320C6711) board. The test-bed consists of a PC (for generating the RX data), beam-former(i.e., a stand-alone PCB for weight computation), and an interfacing module. The performance improvements compared to a normal base station system consisting of a single antenna are shown in terms the BER(bit error rate) in the wide-band CDMA channel.

Optimum and Sub-optimum Decoding Methods of Space-Time Trellis Coded Code Division Multiple Access Systems (시공간 트렐리스 부호화 CDMA 시스템의 최적, 준최적 복호 방식과 성능 연구)

  • We present Space-Time Trellis Coded Code Division Multiple Access systems, which maintain the full diversity and coding gain of Space-Time Trellis Codes(STTC) and have the immunity to performance degradation caused by multipath fading. These STTC CDMA systems are constructed by adding the spreading and despreading processes of PN codes to STTC systems. In multipath fading channels, delay spreaded signals are detected and combined, then decoded. According to the combining and decoding methods, there are four decoding methods. There are optimum ML decoding without combining, adding multipath signals in each receive antenna before decoding, combining multi path signals in each antenna before decoding, and combining all received signals before decoding. Performance of these methods is proportional to complexity. Besides, all methods are shown to compensate the irreducible error rate which appears in multipath fading channels.

  • We consider the problem of estimating a code-timing of DS-CDMA signal in antenna array systems in the presence of flat fading channels and near-far environments. We derive an approximate maximum likelihood algorithm of estimating the code-timing of a desired user for DS-CDMA systems to better utilize the time-varying characteristics of the fading process. In the development of code timing estimator, the given observation bits are divided into many sets of sub-windows with each sufficiently large. The proposed method uses sub-windows with equal size associated with the coherence time of channel fading. The alternative approach is that without the estimation of the fading rate, the sufficiently given observation bits are simply separated into two consecutive sets of sub-windows. The derivation of the proposed algorithms is based on multiple antennas partially correlated in space. The impacts of spatial fading correlation on acquisition and men acquisition time performance of the proposed algorithms are also examined.

Performance improvement of multiuser detection using antenna array in CDMA base station

  • This paper analysis the performance of joint receiving structure consisting of the decorrelating multiuser detection and beamfromenr-RAKE receive for DS-CDMA communication systems. In asynchronous transmission as the number of simultaneous users increase. the capacity of CDMA system becomes severly reduced due to the nonideal orthogonality between user-assigned PN sequences and improper power control. Accordingly, the CDMA receiving system becomes vulnerable to the multiple access interferences and the near-far problem under multipath fading channel environment. To withstand these undesired performance degradations, this paper proposes the new type of multiuser detection which has a form of the hybrid structure of concatenating beamformer-RAKE receiver and decorrelating multiuser detection. the beam former-RAKE receiver performs temporal and spatial diversity combining with alleviating fading effect and suppressing undesired interferences, and the multiuser detection plays a role of making the receiver robust to the near-far problem. Regarding the individual merit on the usage of either multiuser detection or beamformer-RAKE receiver, the hybrid one is expected to produce the enhanced performance in multipath fading CDMA channel. However major drawback of using decorrelating multiuser detection for practical deployment is arised from its computational complexity , which is exponentially increased as more number of users and transmitted symbols involve. To diminish the computational complexity, this paper exploits an efficient block Toeplitz inversion technique using matrix Levinson polynomial will be introduced. And this paper provided the mathematical analysis to show the efficiency of the proposed joint structure under the multipath propagation environment. And results of a series of exhaustive computer simulations are presented in order to demonstrate the overall performance of the proposed hybrid structure in multipath fading CDMA channel.

The Design and Implementation of a Multi-Band Planar Antenna for Cellular/PCS/IMT-2000 Base Station (셀룰러/PCS/IMT-2000 기지국용 다중대역 평판 안테나 설계 및 구현)

  • In this paper, a novel dual and wide band aperture stacked patch antenna for Cellular/PCS/IMT-2000 base station is presented. It consists of single microstrip patch having notches along the radiating patch, two dielectric substrates and a form material. To achieve wide band characteristic, we utilize the coupling effect between the notched patch and the resonant aperture in the ground plane and by properly cutting notches on the patch, an aperture stacked patch antenna could be designed to yield dual frequency operation. By the proper choice of resonant aperture size and height of a foam material, dual and wide band characteristic could be realized the measured impedance bandwidth(1:1.5 VSWR) of designed antenna at lower band(860 MHz) reaches 77 MHz and covers the Cellular CDMA band(824∼894 MHz). The measured impedance bandwidth(1:1.5 VSMR) of the designed antenna at upper band(1,960 MHz) is about 550 MHz and covers both the PCS band(1,750∼l,870 MHz) and the for-2000 band(1,920∼2,170 MHz). Good broadside radiation with high gain(5.65∼7.4 dBi) characteristics have also been observed.

Coded performance evaluation of a multi-antenna OFDMA system for reverse-link (다중안테나를 고려한 직교 주파수 분할 다중 접속 방식의 역방향 부호화 성능 검증)

  • In this paper, link-level performance of a OFDMA technique, which has been considered as a standard for 802.16, 802.20, 3G-LTE, WiMax, and WiBro, is evaluated for next-generation wireless communication systems. While many researches have focused on uncoded forward-link performances, this paper provides a coded performance of a reverse-link OFDMA system. Performance degradation due to time offset among reverse-link users and frequency offset during FFT process is investigated. Transmitter and receiver antenna diversity techniques are used to overcome performance degradation. Performance of a OFDMA system is compared with a CDMA system in terms of FER and throughput to emphasize the advantage of OFDMA system for a reverse-link. Finally, under given specification, Eb/No required to achieve the maximum throughput of a reverse-link is proposed considering various coded rates and antenna permutations.

Effects of Vibration on Passive Intermodulation Distortion in Mobile Base Station Antennas (이동 통신 기지국 안테나의 수동 상호 변조 왜곡에 진동이 미치는 영향 분석 및 개선 방안)

  • This work investigates the effects of vibration on the passive intermodulation distortion characteristics of base station antennas for 800 MHz CDMA mobile communication systems. In general, base station antennas are located at high positions such as on building rooftops or iron towers. Thus the antennas are always affected by random vibrations, coming from various natural environmental factors such as rain and wind, or from living environmental factors such as vehicles and trains passing by. The measured intermodulation distortion characteristics before and after vibration accelerated degradation test show that vibrations are indeed the main cause for the intermodulation distortion performances of such antennas. To minimize the effects of vibrations, a new antenna design isptoposed that has an improved tolerance for vibrations. Experimental results show that the proposed antenna design dramatically reduces the degradation of the intermodulation distortion more than 35 dB.

  • Extension of the mobile communication and the rapidly developing services connected with wireless multimedia(W-CDMA, DMB, Wibro, and so on) need great many base station transceiver systems, antennas, and many signal transmission line to embody these services. The min communication appliances system is exposed always in danger of transient overvoltage by direct stroke or induced lightning surge flowing in through antenna because the antenna of base station transceiver system or relay equipment is combined with expensive communication network equipments through signal transmission line. Now, gas discharge tube(GDT) or narrow band stub arrestor which is used by the surge protector for communication use is exposing limitations as for lightning surge protective means of the communication facility with high speed and wide frequency band. Therefore, for improving performance of surge arrestor, we applied ceramic filter which can reduce lightning surge invading from antenna effectively, and proved that ceramic filter is effective in residual voltage reduction through the experimental research.
