  • The single crystals of p-$CdIn_2Te_4$ were grown by the Bridgman method without the seed crystal. From photocurrent measurements, it was found that three peaks, A, B, and C, correspond to the intrinsic transition from the valence band states of $\Gamma_7$(A), $\Gamma_6$(B), and $\Gamma_7$(C) to the conduction band state of $\Gamma_6$, respectively. The crystal field splitting and the spin orbit splitting were found to be 0.2360 and 0.1119 eV, respectively, from the photocurrent spectroscopy. The temperature dependence of the $CdIn_2Te_4$ band gap energy was given by the equation of $E_g(T)=E_g(0)-(9.43{\times}10^{-3})T^2/(2676+T)$. $E_g$(0) was estimated to be 1.4750, 1.7110, and 1.8229 eV at the valence band states of A, B, and C, respectively. The band gap energy of p-$CdIn_2Te_4$ at room temperature was determined to be 1.2023 eV.

  • To investigate the effect of fluoxetine, one of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), on the immune system, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were treated with fluoxetine $(10^{-7}\;M)$ for 24 h, and immune-related genes were analyzed by cDNA microarray. Expression of the immunerelated genes such as CD107b (LAMP-2), CD47 receptor (thrombospondin receptor), CD5 antigen-like (scavenger receptor cysteine rich family), copine III (CPNE3), interleukin (IL)-18 (interferon-gammainducing factor), integrin alpha 4 (CD49d), integrin alpha L subunit (CD11a), IL-3 receptor alpha subunit, L apoferritin, and small inducible cytokine subfamily A (Cys-Cys) member 13 (SCYA13) was induced by fluoxetine. This result suggests that fluoxetine may affect the immune system, and provides fundamental data for the involvement of SSRIs on immunoregulation.

  • The $Cd_{1-x}Zn_xS$ thin films were grown on the Si(100) wafers by a hot wall epitaxy method(HWE). The source and substrate temperature are $600^{\circ}C\;and\;440^{\circ}C$ respectively. The crystalline structure of epilayers was investigated by double crystal X-ray diffraction(DCXD). Hall effect on the sample was measured by the van der Pauw method and studied on the carrier density and mobility dependence on temperature. In order to explore the applicability as a photoconductive cell, we measured the sensitivity($\gamma$), the ratio of photocurrent to darkcurrent(pc/dc), maximum allowable power dissipation(MAPD), spectral response and response time. The results indicated that the photoconductive characteristic were the best for the $Cd_{0.53}Zn_{0.47}S$ samples annealed in Cu vapor compare with in Cd, Se, air and vacuum vapour. Then we obtained the sensitivity of 0.99, the value of pc/dc of $1.65{\times}10^7$, the MAPD of 338mW, and the rise and decay time of 9.7ms and 9.3ms, respectively

  • The interaction between UN and CdCl2 in the LiCl-KCl molten eutectic was studied at 1023 K. The chlorination was monitored by sampling and recording the redox potential of the medium. At 1023 K the chlorination of UN with cadmium chloride in the molten LiCl-KCl eutectic proceeds completely and results in the formation of uranium chlorides. The melts of the LiCl-KCl-UCl3 or LiCl-KCl-UCl4 compositions can be obtained by the end of experiment depending on the presence of metallic cadmium in the reaction zone. The higher the concentration of the chlorinating agent, the faster the reaction rate. At [CdCl2]/[UN] = 1.65 (10% excess) the reaction proceeds to completion in about 7.5 h. At [CdCl2]/[UN] = 7 the complete chlorination takes 2.5-3 h.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study is to report the efficacy of infliximab, a monoclonal antibody directed against tumor necrosis factor alpha which is used for both treatment of refractory pediatric Crohn disease (CD) and induction of remission. Methods: Among pediatric patients who were diagnosed with CD at Samsung Medical Center between March 2001 and August 2007, a total of 16 patients were given infliximab to treat conventional therapyresistant refractory CD and severe active CD for induction of remission. Patients needing maintenance therapy were treated with an infliximab infusion every 8 weeks, and fistulizing CD patients occasionally received the infusion upon the condition that a fistula developed. The efficacy of treatment was assessed by comparing the Pediatric Crohn Disease Activity Index (PCDAI), Hct, ESR, CRP, and serum albumin levels using paired t-test. Results: The male/female ratio was 13:3, and the median age was 13 years (range, 21 months~15 years). The patients included 7 cases of therapy-resistant refractory CD, 7 cases of severe active CD, and 2 cases of fistulizing CD. Mean PCDAI before infliximab therapy was 34.19${\pm}$14.96, and mean follow-up PCDAI within 2 to 4 weeks after the last infusion was significantly lower, at 6.88${\pm}$10.31 (p=0.000). Hematological markers such as ESR (p=0.000), serum albumin (p=0.016), and CRP (p=0.009) also improved significantly after infusion. Remission was achieved in 2 of 4 patients refractory to conventional therapy. Among 3 steroid-dependent patients, 2 were able to discontinue steroid therapy, and dose reduction was possible in 1 patient. Remission after top-down therapy without prior use of other immunomodulators was achieved in 6 weeks in all 7 of the patients who had severe CD. Nine of ten refractory fistulizing CD patients also showed improvement after infliximab therapy. Conclusion: Infliximab was effective in pediatric refractory CD for induction of remission and maintenance therapy, as well as in severe CD for top-down induction therapy. Furthermore, infliximab has contributed to steroid cessation and dose reduction. Long-term follow-up evaluation is needed to determine safety and efficacy of infliximab in the future.

  • This study examined the effects of dietary ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (${\beta}CD$) on the cholesterol of blood and tissues of swine. Thirty six male castrated swine ($Landrace{\times}Yolkshire{\times}Duroc$) weighing 50 kg were randomly assigned to one of four dietary groups until their weight reached 110 kg. The groups were: basal diet without ${\beta}CD$ (control) and basal diets containing 1.5%, 3.0%, or 5.0% ${\beta}CD$. Diets and water were offered ad libitum. No significant difference was found between treatments in terms of feeding performance measured by daily intake, daily weight gain, and feed efficiency. Addition of ${\beta}CD$ to the diets significantly reduced total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol levels in swine blood, particularly in the group receiving 5.0% ${\beta}CD$, which showed decreases (p<0.05) of 21.9%, 55.6% and 27.7%, respectively. Cholesterol levels in back fat, loin, belly and ham portions of swine fed ${\beta}CD$ significantly differed (p<0.05) from controls, especially in the 5.0% ${\beta}CD$-fed group, with reductions of 26.0%, 27.5%, 17.9% and 18.3%, respectively. These results suggested that the addition of ${\beta}CD$ to the diet of swine could reduce their body cholesterol by decreasing the migration of cholesterol through the blood.

  • Enantioselective production of levofloxacin from ofloxacin butyl ester by porcine liver esterase was enhanced with the addition of ${\alpha}$-cyclodextrin(${\alpha}-CD$) and pH change. The conversion yield was increased from 27 to 64% and 100% with 150 mM substrate when the molar ratio of ${\alpha}-CD$ to substrate was 1 and 2, respectively. When 100 mM of substrate was added with the same molar ratio of ${\alpha}-CD$ at pH 5.6, the solubility was increased 3.8 times and the conversion yield was increased 4.4 times.

  • Cadmium selenide is one of the group IIb-VI compounds, which is the promising semiconductor material due to its wide range of technological applications in optoelectronic devices such as photoelectrochemical cells, solid state solar cells, thin film photoconductors etc. CdSe has optical band gap of 1.7-1.8eV and proper conduction band edge for water splitting. CdSe films are coated with small thickness(20-50nm) nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ film by electrodeposition or chemical bath deposition methods and PEC properties of CdSe and CdSe/$TiO_2$ sandwich structure are studied. The photoactivity of CdSe and CdSe/$TiO_2$ films deposited on titanium substrate is studied in aqueous electrolyte of 1M NaOH solution. Photocurrent and photovoltage obtained were of the order of 2-4 mA/$cm^2$ and 0.5V, respectively, under the intensity of illumination of 100 mW/$cm^2$.

  • Production of cyclodextrin (CD) by cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase (CGTase) isolated from alkalophilic Bacillus sp. was carried out to determine optimal reaction conditions. The maximum initial rate of CD production from amylose was obtained at dextrose equivalent 10.5. The CD production yield showed inverse proportionality to DE values over the range from 0.5 to 37.7. Even though the deactivation constant of CGTase at $60^{\circ}C$ was higher than those at lower temperatures, the production rate and yield at $60^{\circ}C$ were still higher. These results suggest thermal stabilization of CGTase by binding with starch.
