  • In this study, land surface model was used to simulate the soil moisture of South and North Korea for the past 30 years, and the difference in their variation was analyzed. In addition, satellite observed soil moisture data provided by Soil Moisture CCI was analyzed to evaluate the simulation results of VIC model. For the comparison between the simulated and observed data, the CSEOF analysis was applied to indirectly assess the performance of the VIC model rather than simply comparing soil moisture values. The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the annual variability of soil moisture showed a similar tendency in both South and North Korea, but it was found that the soil moisture in South Korea was as high as 1%, up to 7%, higher than the soil moisture in North Korea. Secondly, the soil moisture in spring between April to June is similar in South and North Korea, whereas the soil moisture after the rainy season is up to 40% in South Korea, but remains at maximum 32% in North Korea. Third, the overall simulated soil moisture is about 4% smaller than the satellite observed soil moisture, but the degree of increase over the past 30 years is similar to that of satellite observed soil moisture. Finally, a comparison of the CSEOF from the satellite observed soil moisture and the VIC model derived soil moisture showed that the soil moisture from April to June shows a much different pattern from each other. However, in July and October, there was a slight similarity, and it was confirmed that August and September has quite similar patterns.

  • The impact of a journal is commonly used as the impact of an individual paper within that journal. It is problematic to interpret a journal's impact as a single paper's impact of the journal, so there are several researches to measure a single paper's impact with its own citation counts. This study applied 8 impact indicators to Korean Citation Index database and examined discipline bias of each indicator. Analyzed indicators are simple citation counts, PageRank, f-value, CCI, c-index, single publication h-index, single publication hs-index, and cl-index. PageRank has the least discipline bias at highly ranked papers and journal bias in a discipline. On the contrary, simple citation counts showed strongly biased results toward a certain discipline or a journal. KCI database provides only simple citation counts. It needs to show PageRank (global indicator) to discover influential papers in diverse areas. Furthermore it needs to consider to provide the best of local indicators. Local indicators can be calculated only with papers in users' search results because they uses citation counts of citing papers and the number of references. They are more efficient than global indicators which explore the whole database. KCI should also consider to provide Cl-index (local indicator).

  • The bit error rate(BER) performance of Trellis Coded QPSK signal in the presence of cochannel interference (CCI) and Rician fading is investigated. The trellis coded QPSK system adopts Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) diversity reception and Reed-Solomon code to enhance system performance. Using the derived error probability equation, the error performance of trellis coded QPSK system has been evaluated and shown in figures to discuss as a function of signal power to noise power ratio (SNR), signal power to interference power ratio(SIR), direct to indirect signal power ratio ($K_R$), the number of diversity branch (M), the frame length of Reed-Solomon code (n), the number of error correction symbol (t), and the number of state of trellis encoder. From the results, we know that proposed system is affected by cochannel interference and fading in microcell environment. Also, BER performance of Trellis Coded QPSK system can be improved as increasing either the power of desired signal or the value of SIR. And the BER floor in microcellular system is caused by the cochannel interference and it occurs at high BER when SIR is low. And Reed-Solomon code (n=15, t=2) is more effective to restrain the affection of CCI and fading than MRC diversity reception (M=2).

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of assertiveness training and value clarification training on nurse's conflict and conflict management mode. Fifty seven registered nurses participated in the study ; they were employed by three general hospital located in Daegu, Korea. The study employs two treatment groups. The assertiveness training group consisted of subjects who participated in 90-120 minutes sessions of assertiveness training nine times over five weeks. The other treatment group, was adiministed nine, 90-120 minutes sessions of value clarification during the same period. For the control group, nursing subjects were appointed the training after five weeks. Pre-test evaluation were administered to all subjects in three groups prior to one week of the treatment. Role conflict Inventory-general(RCI-G) and Communication Conflict Inventory-general (CCI-G) measure nurse's conflict management mode. Post-test evaluation were administered to all subjects in three groups two weeks after the last session by Role Conflict Inventory-Specific(RCI-S), Communication Conflict Inventory-Specific (CCI-S), Management Model-Specific(CMMI-S). The analysis of variance(ANOVA) and covariance(ANCOVA) on gain scores were running the SPSS program. In order to test statistical differences among mean scores of the scales obtained after treatment, multiple comparisons were carried out by Turkey method. Conclusions obtained from the results are as follows. 1. The assertiveness training and the value clarification training were effective in decreasing the nurse's role conflict. The value clarification was more effective than the assertiveness training in decreasing the nurse's role conflict. 2. Both assertiveness training and value clarification training were effective in decreasing nurse's communication conflict. There was, however, no differences between assertiveness training and value clarification training in decreasing the nurse's communication conflict. 3. The assertiveness training and the value clarification training were quite effective in compromizing and collaborating conflict management mode, to reducing the withdrawl and accomodate, force and accomodate conflict management mode to conflict. There was no difference in the effectiveness of assertiveness training and value clarification. In assessing the effects of the treatments, this study employed different measurements. It is unclear whether the measurement affected the test results. It is worth conducting a further test using the same measurements. The results of future studies can be compared with those of this study. The homogeneity of the control group and treatment group is questionable. Futher studies may employ homogeneous sample group to evaluate whether the sample characteristics bias the test results. Assertiveness training or value clarification training for nurses can be utilized in nursing intervention.

  • This study was conducted to develop a customized severity-adjustment method and to evaluate their validity for acute myocardial infarction(AMI) patients to complement the limitations of the existing severity-adjustment method for comorbidities. For this purpose, the subjects of KCD-7 code I20.0 ~ I20.9, which is the main diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction were extracted using the Korean National Hospital Discharge In-depth Injury survey data from 2006 to 2015. Three tools were used for severity-adjustment method of comorbidities : CCI (charlson comorbidity index), ECI (Elixhauser comorbidity index) and the newly proposed CCS (Clinical Classification Software). The results showed that CCS was the best tool for the severity correction, and that support vector machine model was the most predictable. Therefore, we propose the use of the customized method of severity correction and machine learning techniques from this study for the future research on severity adjustment such as assessment of results of medical service.

  • This study examined the effect of the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet of the Korean multi-domain dementia prevention program on the cognitive functions of the elderly with dementia risk factors. We developed the program including nutrition, exercise, cognitive training, vascular disease prevention, and motivation. One- hundred and fifty-three participants aged 60~79 years with at least 1 dementia risk factor were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to the facility-based intervention (FMI), home-based intervention (HMI), and the control group. The nutrition education program consisted of 10 classes over 24 weeks: the FMI received 7 group sessions and three 1:1 sessions, the HMI received 4 group sessions and three 1:1 sessions with 3 homework sessions. The Nutrition Quotient for Elderly (NQ-E) and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) were used to evaluate nutritional status. The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE), and the Cognitive Complaint Interview (CCI) were used to evaluate cognitive functions. A total of 136 people completed the program with an 11.1% dropout rate. The NQ-E (P=0.009) and RBANS (P=0.001) scores significantly increased in the FMI (N=45) and HMI (N=49) groups compared to the control group (N=42) after the study. The changes in the score of MNA and CCI did not differ significantly between groups. In conclusion, the nutritional intervention which focused on the MIND diet as a part of a multi-domain intervention program had a positive effect on the improvement of healthy eating habits and cognitive function scores in the high-risk dementia group.

  • The issue to be discussed is set as the relationship between urban fragmentation and urban heat phenomena. The fragmentation is recognized as a negative form that commonly occurs in the process of urbanization. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between urbanization entropy and heat phenomenon by looking at the five major cities in Korea. The employed methods are InVEST Urban Cooling Model and MSPA (Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis) by using the meteological data for the July 2018. The major results are as follows; First, a low rank correlation(rho=-0.3) is found in the relation between entropy and Cooling Capacity Index (CCi). Second, a very high level of rank correlation is observed between entropy and Average Temperature(℃)(rho=0.9). The implications are that 1) a city with a large degree of sprawling development can have a negative effect on urban heat phenomena; 2) the composition of land use including dispersion and concentration in non-urbanized areas, which has the characteristics of open space, can affect the urban thermal environment. Due to the limited number of case studies, it is appropriate to understand that a possibility, not generalization, is observed between entropy and heat phenomena in urbanized areas.

  • Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an ongoing global public health threat and different variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) have been identified. This study aimed to analyse the factors associated with negative conversion of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and prognosis in critically ill patients according to the SARS-CoV-2 variant. Methods: This study retrospectively analysed 259 critically ill patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to the intensive care unit of a tertiary medical center between January 2020 and May 2022. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) was used to evaluate comorbidity, and a negative PCR test result within 2 weeks was used to define negative PCR conversion. The cases were divided into the following three variant groups, according to the documented variant of SARS-CoV-2 at the time of diagnosis: non-Delta (January 20, 2020-July 6, 2021), Delta (July 7, 2021- January 1, 2022), and Omicron (January 30, 2022-April 24, 2022). Results: The mean age of the 259 patients was 67.1 years and 93 (35.9%) patients were female. Fifty (19.3%) patients were smokers, and 50 (19.3%) patients were vaccinated. The CCI (hazard ratio [HR], 1.555; p<0.001), vaccination (HR, 0.492; p=0.033), and Delta variant (HR, 2.469; p=0.002) were significant factors for in-hospital mortality. The Delta variant (odds ratio, 0.288; p=0.003) was associated with fewer negative PCR conversion; however, vaccination (p=0.163) and remdesivir (p=0.124) treatments did not. Conclusion: The Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 is associated with lower survival and negative PCR conversion. Contrary to expectations, vaccination and remdesivir may not affect negative PCR conversion in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

  • Background/Aims: Optimal risk stratification based on simplified geriatric assessment to predict treatment-related toxicity and survival needs to be clarified in older patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). Methods: This multicenter prospective cohort study enrolled newly diagnosed patients with DLBCL (≥ 65 yr) between September 2015 and April 2018. A simplified geriatric assessment was performed at baseline using Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental ADL (IADL), and Charlson's Comorbidity Index (CCI). The primary endpoint was event-free survival (EFS). Results: The study included 249 patients, the median age was 74 years (range, 65-88), and 125 (50.2%) were female. In multivariable Cox analysis, ADL, IADL, CCI, and age were independent factors for EFS; an integrated geriatric score was derived and the patients stratified into three geriatric categories: fit (n = 162, 65.1%), intermediate-fit (n = 25, 10.0%), and frail (n = 62, 24.9%). The established geriatric model was significantly associated with EFS (fit vs. intermediate-fit, HR 2.61, p < 0.001; fit vs. frail, HR 4.61, p < 0.001) and outperformed each covariate alone or in combination. In 87 intermediate-fit or frail patients, the relative doxorubicin dose intensity (RDDI) ≥ 62.4% was significantly associated with worse EFS (HR, 2.15, 95% CI 1.30-3.53, p = 0.002). It was related with a higher incidence of grade ≥ 3 symptomatic non-hematologic toxicities (63.2% vs. 27.8%, p < 0.001) and earlier treatment discontinuation (34.5% vs. 8.0%, p < 0.001) in patients with RDDI ≥ 62.4% than in those with RDDI < 62.4%. Conclusions: This model integrating simplified geriatric assessment can risk-stratify older patients with DLBCL and identify those who are highly vulnerable to standard dose-intensity chemoimmunotherapy.

  • Soil moisture is an essential satellite-driven variable for understanding hydrologic, pedologic and geomorphic processes. The European Space Agency (ESA) has endorsed soil moisture as one of Climate Change Initiates (CCI) and had merged multi-satellites over 30 years. The $0.25^{\circ}$ coarse resolution soil moisture satellite data showed correlations with variables of a water stress index, Temperature-Vegetation Dryness Index (TVDI), from a stepwise regression analysis. The ancillary data from TVDI, Land Surface Temperature (LST) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from MODIS were inputted to a multi-regression analysis for estimating the surface soil moisture. The estimated soil moisture was validated with in-situ soil moisture data from April, 2012 to March, 2013 at Andong observation sites in South Korea. The soil moisture estimated using satellite-based LST and NDVI showed a good agreement with the observed ground data that this approach is plausible to define spatial distribution of surface soil moisture.
