  • All image data acquisition systems for example the digital camera and digital camcorder, use the image sensor to convert the image data (light) into electronic data. These image sensors are used in satellite camera for high quality and resolution image data. There are two kinds of image sensors, the one is the CCD (charge coupled device) detector sensor and the other is the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) image sensor. The CCD sensor control system has more complex than the CMOS sensor control system. For the high quality image data on CCD sensor, the precise timing control signal and the several voltage sources are needed in the control system. In this paper, the comparison of the CCD with CMOS sensor, the CCD sensor characteristic, and the control system will be described.

  • The geometry of satellite image captured by linear CCD sensor is different from that of frame camera image. The fact that the exterior orientation parameters for satellite image with linear CCD sensor varies from scan line by scan line, causes the difference of image geometry between frame and linear CCD sensor. Therefore, we need the epipolar geometry for linear CCD image which differs from that of frame camera image. In this paper, we proposed a method of resampling linear CCD satellite image in epipolar geometry under the assumption that image is not formed in perspective projection but in parallel projection, and the sensor model is a 2D affine sensor model based on parallel projection. For the experiment, IKONOS stereo images, which are high resolution linear CCD images, were used and tested. As results, the spatial accuracy of 2D affine sensor model is investigated and the accuracy of epipolar resampled image with RFM was presented.

  • Optimum characteristics of digital X-ray sensor components were analyzed to develop intra- oral dental digital X-ray image sensor using indirect method. Parametric analysis was carried out to optimize the phosphor thickness and the fiber optic plate (FOP) coupling to charge coupled device (CCD). X-ray absorption and light diffusion in the phosphor layer were analyzed by the Monte Carlo method. Real time X-ray image was obtained with prototype X- ray image sensor using general CCD camera with 1∼10 Ip/mm resolution. It has been previously shown that large resolution degradation in X-ray images was caused by miss alignment of FOP to CCD and optical adhesive selection. In this study, we reported that X-ray image quality was greatly improved by using optimized characteristics of alignment device and phosphor thickness.

  • EOIS(electro-optical imaging system) is the main target of the laser weapon. Specially, the image sensor will be vulnerable because EOIS focuses the incident laser beam onto the image sensor. Accordingly, the laser-induced damage of the image sensor needs to be identified for the counter-measure against the laser attack. In this study, the laser-induced damage of the CCD image sensor irradiated by the CW(continuous wave) NIR(near infrared) laser was experimentally investigated and mechanisms of those damage occurrences were analyzed. In the experiment, the near infrared CW fiber laser was used as a laser source. As the fluence, which is the product of the irradiance and the irradiation time, increased, the permanent damages such as discoloration and breakdown appeared sequentially. The discoloration occurred when the color filter was damaged and then the breakdown occurred when the photodiode and substrate were damaged. From the experimental results, LIDTs(laser-induced damage thresholds) of damages were roughly determined.

  • The reset operation of a CCD image sensor was improved using charge trapping of a MOS structure to realize a loe voltage driving. A DC bias generating circuit was added to the reset structure which sets reference voltage and holds the signal charge to be detected. The generated DC bias is added to the reset pulse to give an optimized voltage margin to the reset operation, and is controlled by adjustment of the threshold voltage of a MOS transistor in the circuit. By the pulse-type stress voltage applied to the gate, the electrons and holes were injected to the gate dielectrics, and the threshold voltage could be adjusted ranging from 0.2V to 5.5V, which is suitable for controlling the incomplete reset operation due to the process variation. The charges trapped in the silicon nitride lead to the positive and negative shift of the threshold voltage, and this phenomenon is explained by Poole-Frenkel conduction and Fowler-Nordheim conduction. A CCD image sensor with $492(H){\;}{\times}{\;}510(V)$ pixels adopting this structure showed complete reset operation with the driving voltage of 3.0V. The resolution chart taken with the image sensor shows no image flow to the illumination of 30 lux, even in the driving voltage of 3.0V.

  • Thermal infrared camera have poor image qualities compared to commercial CCD cameras, as in contrast, brightness, and. resolution. To compensate the poor Image quality problems associated with the thermal infrared camera, the technique of superimposing thermal infrared image into real ccd image is proposed. The mobile robot KAEROT/m2, loaded with sensor head system at the mast, is entered to monitor leakage of heavy water and thermal abnormality of the calandria reactor area in overhaul period. The sensor head system is composed of thermal infrared camera and cod camera In parallel. When thermal abnormality on observation points and areas of calandria reactor area is occurred, unusual hot image taken from thermal infrared camera is superimposed on real CCD image. In this inspection experiment, more accurate positions of thermal abnormalities on calandria reactor area can be estimated by using technique of mapping thermal infrared image into CCD image, which include characters arranged in MPOQ order.

  • A visual sensor consisted of polygonal mirror, laser, and CCD camera was proposed to measure the distance to the weld joint for recognizing the joint shape. To scan the laser beam of the sensor onto an object, 8-facet polygonal mirror was used as the rotating mirror. By locating the laser and the camera at axi-symmetrical positions around the mirror, the synchronized-scan condition could be satisfied even when the mirror was set to rotate through one direction continuously, which could remove the inertia effect of the conventional oscillating-mirror methods. The mathematical modelling of the proposed sensor with the optical triangulation method made it possible to derive the relation between the position of an image on the camera and the one of a laser light on the object. Through the geometrical simulation of the proposed sensor with the principal of reflection and virtual image, the optical path of a laser light could be predicted. The position and direction of the CCD camera were determined based on the Scheimpflug's condition to fit the focus of any image reflected from an object within the field of view. The results of modelling and simulation revealed that the proposed visual sensor could be used to recognize the weld joint and its vicinity located within the range of the field of view and the resolution. • Satellite cameras are calibrated before launch in detail and in general, but it cannot be guaranteed that the geometry is not changing during launch and caused by thermal influence of the sun in the orbit. Modem satellite imaging systems are based on CCD-line sensors. Because of the required high sampling rate the length of used CCD-lines is limited. For reaching a sufficient swath width, some CCD-lines are combined to a longer virtual CCD-line. The images generated by the individual CCD-lines do overlap slightly and so they can be shifted in x- and y-direction in relation to a chosen reference image just based on tie points. For the alignment and difference in scale, control points are required. The resulting virtual image has only negligible errors in areas with very large difference in height caused by the difference in the location of the projection centers. Color images can be related to the joint panchromatic scenes just based on tie points. Pan-sharpened images may show only small color shifts in very mountainous areas and for moving objects. The direct sensor orientation has to be calibrated based on control points. Discrepancies in horizontal shift can only be separated from attitude discrepancies with a good three-dimensional control point distribution. For such a calibration a program based on geometric reconstruction of the sensor orientation is required. The approximations by 3D-affine transformation or direct linear transformation (DL n cannot be used. These methods do have also disadvantages for standard sensor orientation. The image orientation by geometric reconstruction can be improved by self calibration with additional parameters for the analysis and compensation of remaining systematic effects for example caused by a not linear CCD-line. The determined sensor geometry can be used for the generation? of rational polynomial coefficients, describing the sensor geometry by relations of polynomials of the ground coordinates X, Y and Z.
