  • Case Based Reasoning (CBR) has come to be considered as an appropriate technique for diagnosis, prognosis and prescription in medicine. However, canventional CBR has a limitation in that it cannot incorporate asymmetric misclassification cast. It assumes that the cast of type1 error and type2 error are the same, so it cannot be modified according ta the error cast of each type. This problem provides major disincentive to apply conventional CBR ta many real world cases that have different casts associated with different types of error. Medical diagnosis is an important example. In this paper we suggest the new knowledge extraction technique called Cast-Sensitive Case Based Reasoning (CSCBR) that can incorporate unequal misclassification cast. The main idea involves a dynamic adaptation of the optimal classification boundary paint and the number of neighbors that minimize the tatol misclassification cast according ta the error casts. Our technique uses a genetic algorithm (GA) for finding these two feature vectors of CSCBR. We apply this new method ta diabetes datasets and compare the results with those of the cast-sensitive methods, C5.0 and CART. The results of this paper shaw that the proposed technique outperforms other methods and overcomes the limitation of conventional CBR.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reproducing accuracy of stone casts made from complete arch impressions using different impression materials. The impression materials studied were 1) polyether, 2) polysulfide, 3) polyvinyl siloxane, and 4) irreversible hydrocolloid. Impressions were made from a partially edentulous acrylic resin model with metal inserts in canine, first molar region bilaterally and mid palatal vault region. Each distance between 2 out of 5 meauring points was measured by using 3dimensional measuring machine. Impressions were poured at once with a type IV dental stone. Data were analyzed using t-test with a sample size of six. The results were as follow : 1. Polysulfide and polyether were significantly superior to polyvinyl siloxane and irreversible hydrocolloid in reproducing full arch model(p<0.05), but there were no statistical differences in amount of dimensional reproducing accuracy for full arch impression between polysulfide and polyether(p>0.05). 2. There were statistical differences in amount of dimensional reproducing accuracy between edentulous area and tooth bound area for polysulfide and polyether(p<0.05). but no statistical differences were observed for polyvinyl siloxane and irreversible hydrocolloid(p>0.05).

  • Squeeze casting process has been used in the field of a commercial manufacturing method, in which metal is enforcedly solidified under pressure enough to prevent the cast defects such as either gas porosity or shrinkage defect. In this paper, to clarify the relationship between applied pressures and macro ${\cdot}$ microstructural behaviors in gravity and direct squeeze casts, specimens were cast by various squeezing pressures during solidification of 7000 series Al wrought alloy in the metal die designed specially. The applied pressures used in this study were 0, 25, 50, and 75 MPa. The microstructural morphologies of squeeze cast were more fine and dense with increasing the applied pressures, because of the greater solidification rate of billet resulting from the applied pressure. A normal segregation phenomenon of an increasing in amount of eutectics towards the center of the billet was observed for squeeze casts, whereas gravity cast showed an inverse segregation phenomenon of an increasing in amount of eutectics towards the edge in the billet. This change in segregation pattern which is normal or inverse is due to a higher radial temperature gradient and reduced time in the semi solid state for squeeze casting.

  • Steel industry is the most capital intensive and the largest energy consuming industry, which operate huge and complex facilities to supply various steel products as the primary materials to almost every manufacturing industry Major steel products are hot-rolled and cold-rolled coils, plates, and wires that are produced through molten iron making, molten steel making, casting, and rolling. Each process runs in batch between setups and the specifications or bach are different with each other High energy consuming and heavy material handling require careful synchronization or processes, as well. Considering the synchronization or processes, the lot planning and scheduling problem in the integrated steelmaking process rovers the roll grouping with given casts. the sequencing or rolls over time, and the machine assignment and time scheduling or charges and casts. The problem is investigated by dividing it into two cases whether single or parallel machines at the molten steel making and the continuous casting processes. Problem descriptions and solution approaches or each instance are introduced. To test their performance and conformity, implementation or the algorithms and numerical experiments are carried out with real world and constructed data sets.

  • The bacterial communities in the intestinal tracts of earthworm were investigated by culture-dependent and -independent approaches. In total, 72 and 55 pure cultures were isolated from the intestinal tracts of earthworms under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, respectively. Aerobic bacteria were classified as Aeromonas (40%), Bacillus (37%), Photobacterium (10%), Pseudomonas (7%), and Shewanella (6%). Anaerobic bacteria were classified as Aeromonas (52%), Bacillus (27%), Shewanella (12%), Paenibacillus (5%), Clostridium (2%), and Cellulosimicrobium (2%). The dominant microorganisms were Aeromonas and Bacillus species under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. In all, 39 DNA fragments were identified by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) analysis. Aeromonas sp. was the dominant microorganism in feeds, intestinal tracts, and casts of earthworms. The DGGE band intensity of Aeromonas from feeds, intestinal tracts, and casts of earthworms was 12.8%, 14.7%, and 15.1%, respectively. The other strains identified were Bacillus, Clostridium, Enterobacter, Photobacterium, Pseudomonas, Shewanella, Streptomyces, uncultured Chloroflexi bacterium, and uncultured bacterium. These results suggest that PCR-DGGE analysis was more efficient than the culturedependent approach for the investigation of bacterial diversity and the identification of unculturable microorganisms.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the long-term stability of rapid palatal expansion (RPE) followed by full fixed edgewise appliances. Methods: This study included 67 patients treated using Haas-type RPE and non-extraction edgewise appliance therapy at a single orthodontic practice. Serial dental casts were obtained at three different time points: pretreatment ($T_1$), after expansion and fixed appliance therapy ($T_2$), and at long-term recall ($T_3$). The mean duration of the $T_1-T_2$ and $T_2-T_3$ periods was $4.8{\pm}3.5years$ and $11.0{\pm}5.4years$, respectively. The dental casts were digitized, and the computed measurements were compared with untreated reference data. Results: The majority of treatment-related increases in the maxillary and mandibular arch measurements were statistically significant (p < 0.05) and greater than expected for the untreated controls. Although many measurements decreased postretention ($T_2-T_3$), the net gains persisted for all of the measurements evaluated. Conclusions: The use of RPE therapy followed by full fixed edgewise appliances is an effective method for increasing maxillary and mandibular arch width dimensions in growing patients.

  • Purpose: The objects of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the dental stone casts made from alginate impressions according to storage condition and stone pouring time. Materials and Methods: Each of upper and lower impressions of dental model was taken. The dental stone models were made immediately, 10, 30, 60, 180, 360 minutes after the impressions were taken at each storage condition. 3D models were constructed by scanning the stone model using 3D laser scanner. With Reference points, positioned on digital models, linear measurements of the dimensional change were compared by 3D metrology software, 3D average models were made and superimposition to identify the specific site of dimensional change and to measure surface deviation (mm). Results: Dental stone models which were made immediately after taking the impression showed the smallest linear dimensional change. As the stone pouring time was prolonged, the linear dimensional change was increased. More than 180 minutes after impression taking, linear dimensional change and surface distortion increased in the posterior molar region, regardless of the storage condition. Conclusion: For the optimum accuracy of the dental stone casts, alginate impression should be poured as soon as possible. If there were a need for storing, a humidor with 100% relative humidity must be used and be stored less than 180 minutes to fabricate the accurate dental model.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the possibllity of composting from cow manure using earthworms. In order to rear earthworms safely and control moisture soil was used as conditioner. Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium sp.1 were isolated from soil and two isolates of Bacillus sp. were selected as antagonists from earthworm casts. By rearing earthworm, C/N ratio was reduced by 40.9% and 41.9% after 28 days, reducing sugar was also decreased by 37.1% and 37.5%. On the other hand, reduction of C/N ratio in cow manure alone was 9.67% and reducing sugar was 12.01%, respectively. Bacillus sp. was apparently increased in earthworm casts than in ordinary soil. It seemed that the earthworm casts contained antibiotic subatance.
