Synthesis and Biological Activity of (2-Substituted-4-methylthiazol-5-yl) (4-substituted piperazin-1-yl)methanone Derivatives

  • In the present study a novel series of (2-substituted-4-methylthiazol-5-yl)(4-substituted piperazin-1-yl)methanone derivatives were synthesized by reaction of 2-substituted-4-methylthiazole-5-carboxylic acid with N-substituted benzyl piperazine by using 1-ethyl-3-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]carbodiimide hydrochloride (EDCl) and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBt) in DMF. All the newly synthesized compounds were characterized by spectral methods. The title compounds were screened for in vitro antibacterial activity. Most of the compounds show moderate to good antimicrobial activity.

  • The gene CDC70 encoding the${\alpha}-subunit$ of G protein has been known to be a component involved in mating pheromone signalling in the yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. To isolate mutations of the genes involved in the signal transduction, Saccharomyces cerevisiae the strain bearing the cdc70-5 mutation was mutagenized to be forced to recover the ability of colony-formation at restrictive temperature, which means the new mutation can suppress the temperature sensitivity of the cdc70-5 phenotypes. Among these suppressors, $sir^-$ and $mat{\alpha}2^{-}$ mutations are excluded because of no relationship to signal transducer. And the selected suppressors were analyzed for the linkage relationships by the tetrad analysis. Out of fifteen suppressors isolated, twelve were classified into four linkage groups, designated as sga1, sga2, sga3, sga4 by the tetrad analysis. The other three genes were determined for the linkage.

  • A multi-effect air gap membrane distillation (ME-AGMD) module for pesticide wastewater treatment is studied with internal heat recovery, sensible heat of brine recovery, number of stages and the use of fresh feed as cooling water in a single module is implemented in this study. A flat sheet polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) membrane was used in the 4-stage ME-AGMD module. The maximum value of permeate flux could reach $38.62L/m^2h$ at feed -coolant water temperature difference about $52^{\circ}C$. The performance parameter of the module like, specific energy consumption and gain output ratio (GOR) was investigated for the module with and without heat recovery. Also, the module performance was characterized with respect to the separation efficiency of several important water quality parameters. The removal efficiency of the module was found to be >98.8% irrespective water quality parameters. During the experiment the membrane fouling was caused due to the deposition of the salt/crystal on the membrane surface. The membrane fouling was controlled by membrane module washing cycle 9 h and also by acidification of the feed water (pH=4) using 0.1M HCl solution.

FEM-based modelling of stabilized fibrous peat by end-bearing cement deep mixing columns

  • This study aims to simulate the stabilization process of fibrous peat samples using end-bearing Cement Deep Mixing (CDM) columns by three area improvement ratios of 13.1% (TS-2), 19.6% (TS-3) and 26.2% (TS-3). It also focuses on the determination of approximate stress distribution between CDM columns and untreated fibrous peat soil. First, fibrous peat samples were mechanically stabilized using CDM columns of different area improvement ratio. Further, the ultimate bearing capacity of a rectangular foundation rested on the stabilized peat was calculated in stress-controlled condition. Then, this process was simulated via a FEM-based model using Plaxis 3-D foundation and the numerical modelling results were compared with experimental findings. In the numerical modelling stage, the behaviour of fibrous peat was simulated based on hardening soil (HS) model and Mohr-Coulomb (MC) model, while embedded pile element was utilized for CDM columns. The results indicated that in case of untreated peat HS model could predict the behaviour of fibrous peat better than MC model. The comparison between experimental and numerical investigations showed that the stress distribution between soil (S) and CDM columns (C) were 81%C-19%S (TS-2), 83%C-17%S (TS-3) and 89%C-11%S (TS-4), respectively. This implies that when the area improvement ratio is increased, the share of the CDM columns from final load was increased. Finally, the calculated bearing capacity factors were compared with results on the account of empirical design methods.

A Study on Anjoon-gut Music in Daejeon - Focused on Sir Shin Seok-bong's Antaek-gut Music- (대전의 앉은굿 음악 연구 - 신석봉 법사의 안택굿을 중심으로 -)

  • Based on a field investigation of intangible cultural asset # 2, author Sir Shin Seok-bong of Daejeon Metropolitan Cityinvestigated the music of Antaek-gut, which is the base and core of Anjoon-gut, and found the following musical features: A Jang-gu(drum) and Kkoaengkwari(gong) were used to recitethe Sutra(kyungmoon) of Anjoon-gut. The Jang-gu, located on the right side, played an accompaniment role with regular beats when the Sutra was recited. The Kkoaengkwari, located on the left side, played the role of covering the caesura of the Sutra passages, so it is played with various rhythmic variations in accordance with Kojang(鼓杖). This is one way of playing Korean national classical music that has temporary caesuras, depending on the rector's bre! ath or the contents of a Sutra during the Sutra chanting, with the Jang-gu covering the pause with its variation. In other words, when being played in concert, the instruments that play the main melody are at rest while another instrument takes its turn to play the main melody as a form of prolonged sound. The rhythmic cycles of the sutras of Antaek-gut recited with this instrumental accompaniment consist of five types; a) Woemarch-jangdan (a single beat) of 4 meter by 3 bit, b) Dumarch-jangdan (two beats) of 8 meter by 3 bit, c) Saemarch-jangdan (three beats) of 4 meter by 3 bit with a fast tempo, d) Mak-gojang, uniform beats with a standardized rhythm, and e) incomplete beats deviated from the regular beats. Sir Shin Seok-bong chanted Chang (唱), a traditional native song which he called 'Cheong (淸)' with a cycle of 'Dumarch-jangdan' throughout the places of Antaek-gut. Only 'Toesonggyung' a chant for the gate that was the last location of the Antaek, was chanted with a cycle of 'Woemarch-jan! gdan'. In addition, 'Saemarch-jangdan' and 'Mak-gojang' that had comparatively faster tempos than the former two jangdans, were played without a chant when a female shaman was dancing and catching her spirit-invoking wand. The 'Saemarch-jangdan', particularly, was played while dancing began at a relatively slow tempo, then proceeded at a violent tempo and then back again to the slow tempo. This shows one of the representative tempos of our music with a slow-fast-slow tempo. The organizational tones were 'mi-la-do'-re'', and its key tones of 'mi-la-do'' were performed with perfect fourth and minor third, which was the same as those of Menari-tori. However, it did not show a typical Sigimse, an ornamental tone, of Menari-tory, whose first tone, 'mi', is vibrated and its Sigimse is gliding down from the tone 're' to 'do'. That is because the regional tone-tori of Chungcheong-do have a relatively weaker musical expression than that of Gyeongsang-do. In addition, the rhythmic types in accordance with the words of a song for the Antaek-gut music had a comparatively faster tempo than the other sutras. Also, it was only with 'Toesonggyeong' that the tone 'la' continuously appeared throughout the melody and showed 'a syllabic rhythm', while other places consisted of either a 'syncopation' or 'melismatic' rhythm. Finally, according to a brief investigation of the tone organization in accordance with each sutra, the tone 'la' was given more weight. The tone procedure showed a mainly ascending 'la-do'' and the descending 'la-mi' with minor third and perfect fourth. Also, the overall tempo proceeded with M.M.♩.=116-184, while the tempo for the Gut proceeded with M.M.♩.=120-140, which was suitable for reciting a Sutra.

A Study on the Association Between Ginseng Intake and Incidences of Cancer - Kangwha Cohort Study - (인삼섭취와 암발생과의 관련성에 관한 연구 - 강화코호트연구 -)

  • Objectives : There are many concerns about ginseng as a cancer chemopreventive substance, but there have been few epidemiological studies on ginseng, This study sought to examine the relationships between ginseng intake and cancer incidence in the Kangwha cohort. Methods ; Between March 1985 and December 1999, 2697 males, aged 55 or over, as of 1985, were followed up for their cancer incidence. The cancer incidence rate, standardized incidence ratio and risk ratios were calculated according to ginseng intake. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to adjust for age at entry, smoking, alcohol intake, hypertension, and body mass index. Results & Conclusions : The ginseng intake group had the same cancer (C00-C97) incidences (Standardized Incidence Ratio: SIR=1.11, 95% Confidence Interval=0.97-1.27) and the same risk ratio (RR=1.09, 95% Confidence Interval=0.85-1.41) as the no-intake group. Analyzing the subjects that had followed up from 1990, however, the ginseng intake group had lower cancer incidences at all sites (RR=0.79, 95% Confidence Interval=0.58-1.09). This was a cohort study to try and evaluate the association between ginseng intake and the incidences of cancer, The results of this study provide no clear conclusions on the cancer preventive effects of ginseng. Therefore, further study is needed in the future.

  • This is an analysis of 39 patients studied at the Yonsei Medical Center from January, 1976 to March 1979. Of these35 patient were suspected of having hypothalamic insufficiency and subjected to the L-Dopa stimulation test to observe growth hormone sceretory function while four acromegaly patient received the glucose loading test and L-Dopa stimulation test. The results are as follows: 1. The basal level of GH in the various disease was as follows: a. The basal level was lower than the control level but was not statistically significant b. In diabetes the mean value tended to be higher than the control level but was not significant statistically c. In all four acromegaly patients the GH level was significantly higher than the control level 2. Of 13 patients with diabetes, nine had diabetic retinopathy, and of those nine, sir showed increased L-Dopa response. However, of the four non retinopathic DM patients, only one showed increased response to L-Dopa. 3. Two patients out of ten with Sheehan's syndrome responded to L-Dopa stimulation. 4. One Patient of eight with pituitary chromophobe adenoma responded to L-Dopa stimulation. 5. Four acromegaly patients revealed 3 acidophilic adenoma and one chromophobe adenoma histologically. Of patients receiving the L-Dopa stimulation test. Two showed a paradoxical response. Two patients who received the glucose loading test showed supressed response. 6. Of two craniopharyngioma patients, one showed increased GH response after L-Dopa stimulation. The Growth of L.acidophilus and B. bifidum in Fermented Milk Product (Lactobacillus acidophilus와 Bifidobacterium bifidum의 발효 유제품내의 성장)

  • The optimal condition for manufacturing the yoghurt by using B. bifidum and L. acidophilus was studied. Optimal growth condition of B. bifidum and fermentation effects of B. bifidum, L. acidophilus and Str. thermophilus in mixed culture were investigated separately. Fermentation conditions of B. bifidum were optimized in 12% reconstitued skim milk. The addition of BIOS 2000 to 12% skimmilk was effective on the growth and acid production of B. bifidum. There was asymbiosis among B. bifidum, L. acidophilus and Str. thermophilus in mixed culture which resulted in higher viable cell numbers and acid production. The optimum production of yoghurt was achieved by incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ for 8 hours with 5% mixed starter culture (B. bifidum+L.acidophilus+Str. thermophilus). In this case the effective ratio of B. bifidum: L. acidophilus: Str. thermophilus was 2:1:1 on both acid production and viable cell counts.

Effect of the Fish Meat Hydrolysate on the Growth of Lactic Acid Bacteria (유산균(乳酸菌) 성장(成長)에 미치는 어육단백질분해물(魚肉蛋白質分解物)의 영향(影響))

  • In order to clarify the effect of the fish meat hydrolysate on the growth of lactic acid bacteria(Str. lactis, Str. thermophibus, L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus, and L. helveticus), the optimum conditions for hydrolyzing the fish meat were examined, and changes of the acid production, viable cell count of lactic acid bacteria and the charge of pH of the culture medium by addition of the fish meat hydrolysate were tested. The results were as follows: 1. When the hydrolysis of back muscle of mackerel was proceeded at $50^{\circ}C$ and at pH 8, for 48 hours adding 6% pancreatin of the protein content in the substrate, the best result was obtained. 2. The composition of the fish meat hydrolysate were 53.6% moisture, 32.4% protein, 1.0% fat, 10.7% carbohydrate, and 3.2% ash. 3. Above 0.1% of the fish meat hydrolysate in the culture medium, the acidity of the culture medium by Sir. lactis and Str. thermophilus were increased remarkably. The acidity of the culture medium by L. acidophilus and L. helveticus were increased in above 0.2% fish meat hydrolysate in the culture medium. but L. bulgaricus was not effected by the fish meat hydrolysate. 4. The pH of the culture medium during incubating Str. laclis and Sir. thermophilus failed obviously by adding the fish meat hydrolysate. But in the cases of L. bulgaricus, L. acidophilus, and L. helveticus, the pH were not changed clearly. 5. The viable cell count in all bacterial strains tested here were elevated by increasing the concentration of the fish meat hydrolysate.

Effects of Electron-Beam Irradiation on the Physico-chemical Properties of Hanwoo Meat (전자선 조사가 포장방법을 달리한 한우육의 이화학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of Electron Beam irradiation on physico-chemical characteristics of Hanwoo meat. A total of sir beef carcasses $(280{\sim}300\;kg)$ that were quality grade $1^+$(marbling score No. 7, meat color No. 4, maturity No. 1, texture No. 1) was purchased at the commercial slaughter house. The carcasses were transported and washed using high pressure water, and pasteurized with 50% ethyl alcohol in the laboratory. After the carcasses were deboned and trimmed, loin and round were taken out to make steak (1.5 cm thickness) or patty respectively. Samples were wrap or vacuum packaged and irradiated with 0, 3, 4.5, 6 and 7.5 kGy using electron-beam accelerator. Irradiated samples were used to measure pH, moisture, crude protein, crude fat, and meat color. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference in pH between vacuum packaged (VP) and wrap packaged (WP) treatment, and the pH was not changed by electron-beam irradiation levels. Both control and irradiated treatments of steak showed higher tendency in moisture content. In crude protein content, control was higher than irradiated treatment in steak, but there were no difference in patty. Lightness ($L^{\ast}$) of meat color has no difference between irradiated and non-irradiated treatment (p>0.05). The value of redness and Yellowness of meat was dropped by increasing irradiation (p<0.05), but there was no difference between control and 3 kGy treatment (p<0.05).
