  • A total of 197 fecal specimens was prepared for quantitative examination of helminth eggs by modified Kato's cellophane thick smear (M.C.T.S.) and Stoll's dilution egg counting technique (D.E,C.T.). The comparative effectiveness of two techniques was evaluated and conversion function was deduced. The average time required for the microscopic examination on one slide by M.C.T.S. was 12.6 minutes and that of D.E.C.T. was 14.6 minutes. M.C.T.S. showed lower false negative rate than D.E.C.T in light worm burden cases. Functions to convert the counts obtained by M.C.T.S. to E.P.G. by Stoll's dilution egg counting technique were $47.86{\times}10^{0.87{\;}logM.C.T.S.},{\;}$ in A. lumbricoides, $41.69{\times}10^{0.82{\;}logM.C.T.S.}$ in T. trichiura and $63.10{\times}10^{0.85{\;}logM.C.T.S.}$ in C. sinensis. It was suggested M.C.T.S. be better than D.E.C.T. for the quantitative examination of intestinal helminthiases such as A. lumbricoides, T. trichiura, and C. sinensis infections even in the cases with low worm burden.

  • For c > -1, let ${\nu}_c$ denote a weighted radial measure on ${\mathbb{C}}$ normalized so that ${\nu}_c(D)=1$. For $c_1,c_2>-1$ and $f{\in}L^1(D^2,\;{\nu}_{c_1}{\times}{\nu}_{c_2})$, we define the weighted Berezin transform $B_{c_1,c_2}f$ on $D^2$ by $$(B_{c_1,c_2})f(z,w)={\displaystyle{\smashmargin2{\int\nolimits_D}{\int\nolimits_D}}}f({\varphi}_z(x),\;{\varphi}_w(y))\;d{\nu}_{c_1}(x)d{\upsilon}_{c_2}(y)$$. This paper is about the space $M^p_{c_1,c_2}$ of function $f{\in}L^p(D^2,\;{\nu}_{c_1}{\times}{\nu}_{c_2})$ ) satisfying $B_{c_1,c_2}f=f$ for $1{\leq}p<{\infty}$. We find the identity operator on $M^p_{c_1,c_2}$ by using invariant Laplacians and we characterize some special type of functions in $M^p_{c_1,c_2}$.

  • We investigate when the .product of two smooth manifolds admits a weakly Lagrangian embedding. Assume M, N are oriented smooth manifolds of dimension m and n,. respectively, which admit weakly Lagrangian immersions into $C^m$ and $C^n$. If m and n are odd, then $M\;{\times}\;N$ admits a weakly Lagrangian embedding into $C^{m+n}$ In the case when m is odd and n is even, we assume further that $\chi$(N) is an even integer. Then $M\;{\times}\;N$ admits a weakly Lagrangian embedding into $C^{m+n}$. As a corollary, we obtain the result that $S^n_1\;{\times}\;S^n_2\;{\times}\;...{\times}\;S^n_k$, $\kappa$>1, admits a weakly Lagrang.ian embedding into $C^n_1+^n_2+...+^n_k$ if and only if some ni is odd.

  • Effect of SiC particle size of the densification of Al2O3-SiC composite during pressureless sintering was investigated. Two types of SiC powders having average particle size of 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were used. Densification rate of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was slower than that of the specimen containg 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles. Although the relative density of the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles was below 90% of theoretical density after sintering at 155$0^{\circ}C$ the complete closure of open pores occurred. Therefore full densification could be obtained by subsequent HIP. On the other hand in the specimen containing 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles the complete closed pore was observed at 95% of theoretical density. Such a fast pore closure in the specimen containing 0.15${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ SiC particles is likely to occur as a result of dense reaction layer formation on the specimen surface which is attributed to the high reactivity of small size particles with sintering atmosphere.

  • This paper describes the characteristics of polycrystalline 3C-SiC doubly clamped beam micro resonators. The polycrystalline 3C-SiC doubly clamped beam resonators with 60 ~ 100 ${\mu}m$ lengths, $10\;{\mu}m$ width, and $0.4\;{\mu}m$ thickness were fabricated using a surface micromachining technique. Polycrystalline 3C-SiC micro resonators were actuated by piezoelectric element and their fundamental resonant frequency was measured by a laser vibrometer in vacuum at room temperature. For the 60 ~ 100 ${\mu}m$ long cantilevers, the fundamental frequency appeared at 373.4 ~ 908.1 kHz. The resonant frequencies of doubly clamped beam with lengths were higher than simulated results because of tensile stress. Therefore, polycrystalline 3C-SiC doubly clamped beam micro resonators are suitable for RF MEMS devices and bio/chemical sensor applications.

  • In order to investigate the effect of intracellular cyclic GMP on the calcium channel, whole cell patch clamp technique with internal perfusion method was used in the single ventricular myocytes of the rabbit. Cyclic GMP, cGMP analogues, cAMP, isopernaline and forskolin were perfused into cells and their effects on the calcium current were analysed by applying depolarizing step pulse of 10 mV in amplitude for 200 msec from holding potential of -40 mV. Calcium currents usually activated from -30 mV and then reached a peak at +10 mV. Amplitude of the calcium current was standardized with membrane capacitance, 50 pF. Peak amplitude at +10 mV in control was -0.15 nA/50pF. When 100 mM cAMP was applied from the pipette, peak amplitude of calcium current increased to -0.32 nA and addition of 1 mM isoprenaline further increased its amplitude. In the presence of cGMP it alone also produced an increase of the calcium current to -0.52 nA/50pF and addition of isoprenaline or forskolin increased its magnitude to -[0.55~0.95] nA/50pF. Simultaneous application of cGMP and cAMP increased the calcium current to -0.67 nA/50pF. Among the cGMP analogues, 8-Br-cGMP was the most potent stimulant for the calcium current activation. From the above results it could be concluded tlat cGMP increases the calcium current not through cAMP dependent protein kinase nor cAMP dependent phosphodiesterase pathway, but through independent phosphorylation pathway, possibly cGMP dependent protein kinase pathway.

  • Polycrystalline(poly) 3C-SiC film is a promising structural material for M/NEMS used in harsh environments, bio and fields. In order to realize poly 3C-SiC based M/NEMS devices, the electrical properties of poly 3C-SiC film have to be optimized. The n-type poly 3C-SiC thin film is deposited by APCVD using HMDS$(Si_2(CH_3)_6)$ as single precursor and are in-situ doped using N2. Resistivity values as low as 0.014 $\Omega$cm were achieved. The carrier concentration increased with doping from $3.0819\times10^{17}$ to $2.2994\times10^{19}cm^{-3}$ and electronicmobility increased from 2.433 to 29.299 $cm^2/V{\cdot}s$.

  • A Strained Layer Multiquantum-Well (SL-MQW) distributed feedback laser at a wavelength of 1.31 um operating from $-40^{\circ}C$ to $85^{\circ}C$ without any cooling is grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Lasers with high slope efficiency are achieved through careful optimization of a SL-MQW active layer, especiallyoptimizing the amount of strain, the well thickness, the barrier thickness, the number of wells, and the active layer width. In this paper, we obtain the slope efficiencies of 0.38[mW/mA] and 0.26 [mW/mA] at $25^{\circ}C$ and $85^{\circ}C$, respectively. Threshold currents are 7.1[mA] and 19.8[mA] at $25^{\circ}C$ and $85^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Background: Alu elements are one of the most common repetitive sequences that now constitute more than 10% of the human genome and potential targets for epigenetic alterations. Correspondingly, methylation of these elements can result in a genome-wide event that may have an impact in cancer. However, studies investigating the genome-wide status of Alu methylation in cancer remain limited. Objectives: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) presents with high incidence in South-East Asia and thus the aim of this study was to evaluate the Alu methylation status in OSCCs and explore with the possibility of using this information for diagnostic screening. We evaluated Alu methylation status in a) normal oral mucosa compared to OSCC; b) peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of normal controls comparing to oral cancer patients; c) among oral epithelium of normal controls, smokers and oral cancer patients. Materials and Methods: Alu methylation was detected by combined bisulfite restriction analysis (COBRA) at 2 CpG sites. The amplified products were classified into three patterns; hypermethylation ($^mC^mC$), partial methylation ($^uC^mC+^mC^uC$), and hypomethylation ($^uC^uC$). Results: The results demonstrate that the $%^mC^mC$ value is suitable for differentiating normal and cancer in oral tissues (p=0.0002), but is not significantly observe in PBMCs. In addition, a stepwise decrease in this value was observed in the oral epithelium from normal, light smoker, heavy smoker, low stage and high stage OSCC (p=0.0003). Furthermore, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses demonstrated the potential of combined $%^mC$ or $%^mC^mC$ values as markers for oral cancer detection with sensitivity and specificity of 86.7% and 56.7%, respectively. Conclusions: Alu hypomethylation is likely to be associated with multistep oral carcinogenesis, and might be developed as a screening tool for oral cancer detection.
