Exploring the Implications of Peirce's Abduction in Science Education by Theoretical Investigation (Peirce의 귀추법에 관한 이론적 고찰을 통한 과학교육적 함의 탐색)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of abduction suggested by C. S. Peirce, and to discuss its implications in science education. Peirce's abduction is the logic of generating hypothesis. Abduction is a kind of logical inference, which colligates general rule and the observed result, and then it makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of their resemblance. The process of abduction is also the logic of inquiry. In a Peirce's view, inquiry is a struggle for escaping from the condition of 'doubt' and to 'belief the nature of which is the establishment of habits. Because what habit an object has is its whole meaning, in his views, the fixation of belief is the way of attaining the truth related to it. The beliefs of individuals, however, are always fallible. So, to attain a truth, we need the terminal opinion of community of inquiry that could conduct infinite inquiry. These characteristics of Peirce's abduction give suggestions in science education as follows; firstly, hypothesis generating which transforms the condition of 'doubt' into the 'belief by considering practical effects should be highlighted, secondly, logical inference which makes us judge the observed result as a case of the general rule on the basis of resemblance should be highlighted, and thirdly, communities of inquiry which stand on the view of modest realism should be intended toward. These results could be expected in playing a role in critical discussion on science education relating to abduction.

  • Michael Polanyi's idea of tacit knowledge came from the realization that scientific objectivity and critical philosophy had become too restrictive for philosophy, especially in the realm of meaning, which is beyond positivistic proof and contains more non-critical elements than critical ones. In social life, people still share certain kinds of knowledge and beliefs which they obtain without making or learning those explicitly. Contemplating the role and significance of tacit knowledge, he called for a post-critical philosophy that integrates the realm of meaning and thereby appreciates the intertwined nature of tacit and explicit knowledge. Polanyi's position towards skepticism and doubt shows similarities with Charles S. Peirce's thinking about the relationship between belief and doubt. Although Peirce's semeiotics stands firmly in the tradition of critical philosophy, he affirms that doubt cannot be a constant state of mind and only belief can form a basis for a specific way of life. Polanyi's approach differs from Peirce's by focusing on the impossibility of scientific knowledge based solely on principles and precision, and his emphasis on the crucial role of the community of scientists. Nevertheless, the deeper implications of Peirce's contemplations on belief and doubt have myriad ramifications on the philosophy of science as well as the sociology of science.

A Study on The Triadic analysis of Korean Traditional Space Design by Peirce's Semiotics (퍼어스 기호학에 의한 한국전통공간디자인의 삼원론적 분석에 관한 연구)

  • As today's cultural environment entered the information society, one of the biggest trends of future is the interests of nationalism. The purpose of this study is to interpret interrelation between sign and space design and analyze Korean contemporary space how to universalize traditional conception and attitude in design. The process of this study is illustrated as follows: At first, this study contains basic concepts and theories of semiotics and discusses the possibilities of semiotic approaches in spatial designs. Since the most outspoken theorist in this field can be found in writings of C.S. Peirce, American philosopher, the theoretical basis for this research Is taken from the Peirce's Semiotics. Secondly, this research tries the conceptual approaches based on traditional thoughts of Koreans formed with the philosophic background occurred with the universe, religion and the nature. And then, it approaches for the typical characteristics of Korean traditional space to interpret the meaning and adopt the triadic structure of sign. The structure is classified in status, icon, index, and symbol to analyze the Korean contemporary space design. Finally, it examines the expression structure of the nature of Korea that is succeeded in contemporary space design as the semiotic analysis of the application examples ; and studies the examples that try to set and solve the concept of space in modern society as the real issues in our cultural situations.

  • In der Semiotik ist es sehr wichtig, den Rahmenbereich des Zeichens festzustellen, weil der Bereich des Zeichens je nach Wissenschaftler unterschiedlich ist. Dementsprechend muss jedes Forschungsergebnis in der Semiotik hinterfragt werden, um sichergehen zu $k\"{o}nnen$, ob es zur Semiotik $geh\"{o}rt$ oder nicht. Daher besteht $zun\"{a}chst$ die Notwendigkeit, zu bestimmen, was ein Zeichen ist. In diesem Zusammenhang versuchten wir in diesem Aufsatz, damit wir den Begriff 'Zeichen' besser erfassen $k\"{o}nnen$. das Zeichen von C. S. Peirce mit dem van W. v. Humboldt zu vergleichen. Zu Beginn dieses Aufsatzes stellten wir dar, was ein Zeichen ist. Dieser Vorgang ist notwendig, damit mit Hilfe des allgemeinen Begriffes des Zeichens ein Vergleich zwischen Peirce und Humboldt angestellt werden kann. Danach stellten wir die Zeichentheorie von Peirce vor. Nach Peirce ist die Sprache eine Untergattung von drei Zeichensorten, die Ikon, Index und Symbol genannt werden. Nach ihm gehbrt das Symbol zur Sprache. $F\"{u}r$ ihn ist der Interpretant im Zeichenbegriff am wichtigsten, weil ein Zeichen immer eines Interpretantes bedarf, der das Zeichen interpretiert. Aber der Interpretant ist kein Individuum, sondern ein interpretierendes $Bewu{\ss}tsein$, also eine traditionelle Gesellschaft, die ein Muster zum Interpretieren bietet. $Anschlie{\ss}end\;besch\"{a}ftigten$ wir uns mit der Theorie von Humboldt. Er benutzt verschiedene Zeichenbegriffe wie z.B. Schriftzeichen, Lautzeichen, Sprachzeichen, grammatische Zeichen, $h\"{o}rbare$ Zeichen, zeitliche Zeichen und $r\"{a}umliche$ Zeichen. Bei ihm ist die Unterscheidung zwischen Wort und Zeichen besonders wichtig, weil das Wort nicht zum Zeichen $geh\"{o}rt$, wie wir es normalerweise annehmen. Er behauptet, dass das Wort beim Produzieren motiviert ist. Daher ist nach ihm das Wort transsemiotisch. $Dar\"{u}ber$ hinaus muss das Zeichen und das Wort im Zusammenhang zwischen Sprache und Denken betrachtet werden. Wenn man das Wort als Zeichen betrachtet, ist das Wort ein Zwischending zwischen dem Sprechenden und dem Ding. Damit $k\"{o}nnen$ wir schlussfolgern; 1) Bei Humboldt ist das Zeichen em Mittel zum Denken, das sich vom transsemiotischen Wort unterscheidet. 2) Nach Peirce besteht ein Zeichen aus Ikon, Index und Symbol. Im Zeichen, das aus Reprasentamen, Interpretant und Objekt besteht, ist der Interpretant am wichtigsten, denn ein Zeichen, dass keinen Interpretant hat, ist kein Zeichen mehr, das interpretierbar ist.

A Semiotic Study on the Formation Process of Korean Folk-Belief (한국 속신의 형성과정에 대한 기호학적 고찰)

  • Man is confronted with a lot of unknowable phenomena in his life. With the passage of time, man has interpreted the world by the accumulation of experience and development of thought. In the early days of the civilization when all the phenomena was not explained in a scientific way, man was dependent of the psycho-cultural interpretation by the accumulation of experience. Folk-Belief is one of the psycho-cultural interpretation about the nature. If Folk-Belief is paraphrased in a semiotic way, it is as follows : 'the traditional expression which believes that one or several sign and condition show one or several effects.' In this respect, Folk-Belief is the interpretation about the nature, man and society, as it were, the world. Folk-Belief is folkloristic semiotics. This article intends to clarify the process of Folk-Belief formation process. To investigate the Folk-Belief formation process, this article regards Folk-Belief as an interpretant which is the term from the semiotic theory of C. S. Peirce. Peirce explains the incessant semiosis that sign brings forth sign through the trichotomy relation among sign - object - interpretant. Folk-Belief is explained by the general characteristics of interpretant of Peirce when we regard Folk-Belief as an interpretant. By Peirce, Folk-Belief is 'something which believes that human mind represents something about some phenomena' The category of 'some phenomena' is included in a range of semiotics, we can look into Folk-Belief in a semiotic way.

A study on story generation model of blogging (블로그 글쓰기의 스토리생성 모델 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze story generation model of blogging. This study considers the structural factors like RSS, Trackback of the blog that generate stories. RSS pushes stories and this makes 'Story Unit'. By contrast, Trackback pulls stories and this makes 'Story extension'. By applying the concept of C. S. Peirce's "interpretant" for analysis process of story generation, story transformation, and story circulation on a blog, this study examines the meaning that each process create. This study suggests the process of story generation model on blogging as an integrated symbol and presents the model in storytelling perspective.

Cases and Features of Abductive Inference Conducted by a Young Child to Explain Natural Phenomena in Everyday Life

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the cases and features of the abductive inference used by young children when trying to explain natural phenomena in everyday life. From observing a 5-year-old's daily activities with his family, and analyzing the data according to the criterion extracted from the form of abductive inference described by C. S. Peirce, a few cases where the child used abductive inferences to explain natural phenomena were found. The abductive inferences in the cases were conducted: (a) based on figural resemblance and behavioral resemblance (b) under the influence by individual belief and communal belief, then (c) resulted in new categorization accompanied by over generalization. Such features of the abductive inference showed the 'double faces'; sometimes encourages and sometimes discourages children's generating better scientific hypotheses and explanations. These results suggest that even young children use abductive inference to explain doubtful natural phenomena in everyday life, although we need to consider carefully with the double aspects of the features of abductive inference for the practical applications to the fields of science education. Finally, several suggestions and following studies for science education are proposed.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the feature and phenomena of women's costume in Choson dynasty by the approach of semiotics. In order to do so, F Saussure's linguistic symbol theory, C. Peirce's conception on semiology theory and cultural semiology of R. Barthes ware used as tool to analyse traditional women's costumes in $Chos\v{o}n$ dynasty. And I choose basic conceptions based on their semiotic theory. which were langue & parole. dennotation & connotation, paradigm & syntagm, code, and analysed. structure of sign, communication though the non-language. The fashion of the $Chos\v{o}n$ dynasty contains various meaning as sign symbol system and makes the communication possible as it is mentioned above. We nay understand the sign symbol system described in the fashion sign by analysing the structure and meaning operation of sign on the basis of social, political, and idealistic background of the times, to understand the polysemy quality of the fashion.

Smart Tourism Design: A Semiotic Affordances Approach

  • This paper presents a conceptual approach to Smart Tourism Design based on semiotic affordances theory. This conceptual approach repositions smart tourism from a techno-centric perspective that frames a seamless connection between the device and its software, to a more human-centric perspective that favors the user's needs, desires as perceived through the senses. An updated Smart Tourism Design emphasizes the aesthetic dimension of smart tourism that presents the objects of the travel experience as destination specific rather than universal, through representations as digital artifacts. This theory is based on an empirical and objective understanding of representations and how they can be identified as useful in the digital augmentation of travel experiences. Using Peirce's sign systems and Gibson's theory of affordances, smart tourism can transcend a prefabricated device-oriented experience to a closer dynamic and direct interaction between the user and the travel destination. Researchers and developers can use semiotics as a structural approach to recognizing objects as sign-types, and they can use affordances to better identify the immediacy of digital artifacts and purpose-driven by users' spontaneous and immediate motives.
