Background: Reports of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for second-line medications to treat multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) remain limited. Methods: A retrospective cohort from the Virginia state tuberculosis (TB) registry, 2009-2014, was analyzed for TDM usage in MDR-TB. Drug concentrations, measured at time of estimated peak ($C_{max}$), were compared to expected ranges. Results: Of 10 patients with MDR-TB, 8 (80%) had TDM for at least one drug (maximum 6 drugs). Second-line drugs tested were cycloserine in seven patients (mean $C_{2hr}$, $16.6{\pm}10.2{\mu}g/mL$; 4 [57%] below expected range); moxifloxacin in five (mean $C_{2hr}$, $3.2{\pm}1.5{\mu}g/mL$; 1 [20%] below); capreomycin in five (mean $C_{2hr}$, $21.5{\pm}14.0{\mu}g/mL$; 3 [60%] below); para-aminosalicylic acid in five (mean $C_{6hr}$, $65.0{\pm}29.1{\mu}g/mL$; all within or above); linezolid in three (mean $C_{2hr}$, $11.4{\pm}4.1{\mu}g/mL$, 1 [33%] below); amikacin in two (mean $C_{2hr}$, $35.3{\pm}3.7{\mu}g/mL$; 1 [50%] below); ethionamide in one ($C_{2hr}$, $1.49{\mu}g/mL$, within expected). Two patients died: a 38-year-old woman with human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome and TB meningitis without TDM, and a 76-year-old man with fluoroquinolone-resistant (pre-extensively drug-resistant) pulmonary TB and low linezolid and capreomycin concentrations. Conclusion: Individual pharmacokinetic variability was common. A more standardized approach to TDM for MDR-TB may limit over-testing and maximize therapeutic gain.

The vegetable brassicas are an important crop worldwide and are of significant commercial value. In order to ensure our targets for food security are met it is important that these crops are continually improved to increase sustainability of production, increase nutritional quality and reduce waste. Development of resistances against both biotic and abiotic stress are recognised as being key. Plant breeding plays a vital role in addressing these issues through the development of new and improved varieties. This continued improvement is becoming evermore dependent on our ability to identify and introgress beneficial alleles from 'exotic' germplasm into elite breeding material. Increasingly, more diverse germplasm such as those found in genebanks is being screened for benificial allelic variation, however, plant breeders often find it difficult to make use of such material due to the time required to remove undesirable characteristics from progeny due to linkage drag. This article describes how we have attempted to overcome this and develop resources that make the diversity available within the $Brassica$$oleracea$ genepool more accessible.

Multiprocessor architectures and platforms, such as, a multiprocessor system on chip (MPSoC) recently introduced to extend the applicability of the Moore's law, depend upon concurrency and synchronization in both software and hardware to enhance design productivity and system performance. With the rapidly approaching billion transistors era, some of the main problem in deep sub-micron technologies characterized by gate lengths in the range of 60-90 nm will arise from non scalable wire delays, errors in signal integrity and non-synchronized communication. These problems may be addressed by the use of Network on Chip (NOC) architecture for future System-on-Chip (SoC). We have modeled a concurrent architecture for a customizable and scalable NOC in a system level modeling environment using MLDesigner (from MLD Inc.). Varying network loads under various traffic scenarios were applied to obtain realistic performance metrics. We provide the simulation results for latency as a function of the buffer size. We have abstracted the area results for NOC components from its FPGA implementation. Modeled NOC architecture supports three different levels of quality-of-service (QoS).

The performance of large scale software applications has been automatically increasing for last few decades under the influence of Moore's law - the number of transistors on a microprocessor roughly doubled every eighteen months. However, on-chip transistors limitations and heating issues led to the emergence of multicore processors. The energy efficient ARM based System-on-Chip (SoC) processors are being considered for future high performance computing systems. In this paper, we present a case study of two widely used parallel programming models i.e. MPI and MapReduce on distributed memory cluster of ARM SoC development boards. The case study application, Black-Scholes option pricing equation, was parallelized and evaluated in terms of power consumption and throughput. The results show that the Hadoop implementation has low instantaneous power consumption that of MPI, but MPI outperforms Hadoop implementation by a factor of 1.46 in terms of total power consumption to execution time ratio.

The CHIMPS2 survey is to extend the JCMT HARP $^{13}CO/C^{18}O$ J=3-2 Inner Milky-Way Plane Survey (CHIMPS) and the ${12}^CO$ J=3-2 survey (COHRS) into the inner Galactic Plane, the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), and a section of the Outer Plane. When combined with the complementary $^{12}CO/^{13}CO/C^{18}O$ J=1-0 survey at the Nobeyama 45m (FUGIN) at matching 15" resolution and sensitivity, and other current CO surveys, the results will provide a complete set of transition data with which to calculate accurate column densities, gas temperatures and turbulent Mach numbers. These will be used to: analyze molecular cloud properties across a range of Galactic environments; map the star-formation efficiency (SFE) and dense-gas mass fraction (DGMF) in molecular gas as a function of position in the Galaxy and its relation to the nature of the turbulence within molecular clouds; determine Galactic structure as traced by molecular gas and star formation; constrain cloud-formation models; study the relationship of filaments to star formation; test current models of the gas kinematics and stability in the Galactic center region and the flow of gas from the disc. It will also provide an invaluable legacy data set for JCMT that will not be superseded for several decades. In this poster, we will present the current status of the CHIMPS2.

Sp3 is a bifunctional transcription factor that has been reported to stimulate or repress the transcription of numerous genes. Although the size of Sp3 mRNA is 4.0kb, the size of the known Sp3 cDNA sequence is 3.6kb. Thus, Sp3 functional studies have been performed with an artificially introduced start codon, and thus an amino-terminus that differs from the wild-type. Ideally, full-length cDNA expression vectors with the appropriate start codon should be utilized for these studies. Using 5'rapid amplification of cDNA ends, a full-length Sp3 cDNA clone was generated and the sequence verified in nine cell lines. No AUG initiation codon was present. However, stop codons were present in all three frames 5' to the known coding sequence. In vitro translation of this full-length cDNA clone produced the expected three isoforms-one at 100 kDa and two in the mid 60 kDa range. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that the protein products had the ability to bind to the Sp1/3 consensus sequence. In vitro studies, using our Sp3 clone and site directed mutagenesis, identified the translation initiation site for the larger isoform as AUA. AUA has not been previously described as an endogenous initiation codon in eukaryotes.

Moore's law has driven silicon technology scale down aggressively, and it results in significant increase of leakage current on nano-meter scale CMOS. Especially, in mobile devices, leakage current has been one of designers' main concerns, and thus many studies have introduced low power methodologies. However, there are few studies to minimize implementation cost in the mixed use of the methodologies to the best of our knowledge. In this paper, we introduce industrial applications of low power design methodologies for the decrease of leakage current. We focus on the design cost reduction of power gating and reverse body bias when used together. Also, we present voltage scale as an alternative to reverse body bias. To sustain gate leakage current, we discuss the adoption of high-$\kappa$ metal gate, which cuts gate leakage current by a factor of 10 in 32 nm CMOS technology. A 45 nm mobile SoC is shown as the case study of the mixed use of low power methodologies.
In the article were observed the epidemiological aspects of malignant tumors of the central nervous system (MT CNS) in Kazakhstan in a retrospective study for the years 2004-2011. The material of the study was consolidated accounting data of oncology centers on patients with MT CNS (C70-72) with first time established diagnosis. Calculated were crude, age, standardized (world standard), aligned and predicted incidence of MT CNS among both male and female populations. It was found that over the studied period, there were 4,604 cases of MT CNS. The average annual crude incidence rate of MT CNS in total population was $3.7{\pm}0.1^0/_{0000}$. Trends in aligned incidence rates in the whole country had a tendency to increase (T=+0.9%). Defined levels of morbidity MT CNS in the whole population in different regions of Kazakhstan: low up to $2.87^0/_{0000}$, the average from 2.87 to $4.45^0/_{0000}$ and high from $4.45^0/_{0000}$ and above on the basis of which was given the space-time estimate. Age and sex differences in MT CNS incidence were also clearly established.
The purpose of this study was to examine different child care curricula according to teacher's teaching method types. The subjects of the study were three hundred and fifty-six teachers, who were divided into four groups according to their teaching method: mixed method(type A), child oriented method(type B), teacher oriented method(type C), and beliefless method(type D). The data on the duration of free play and outdoor play time, activities frequently practiced in class, and outside one the playground were collected. The dimensions of child care programs were measured using Moore(1994)'s "The Early Childhood Dimensions of Education Rating Scale". The results of this study were as follows: first, teachers who used child oriented teaching methods gave more free play time than teachers using teacher oriented or mixed teaching methods. Second, teachers using teacher oriented methods showed the closeness and teachers using child oriented methods showed the openness in child care programs. Last, the activities teachers thought were the most important differed according to the teachers' methods even though in actual practice, there was no difference shown.
A fraction is one of the most important concepts that students have to learn in elementary school. But it is a challenge for students to understand fraction concept because of its conceptual complexity. The focus of fraction learning is understanding the concept. Then the problem is how we can facilitate the conceptual understanding and estimate it. In this study, Moore's concept understanding scheme(concept definition, concept image, concept usage) was adopted as an theoretical framework to investigate students' fraction understanding. The questions of this study were a) what concept image do students have\ulcorner b) How well do students solve fraction problems\ulcorner c) How do students use fraction concept to generate fraction word problem\ulcorner By analyzing the data gathered from three elementary school, several conclusion was drawn. 1) The students' concept image of fraction is restricted to part-whole sub-construct. So is students' fraction understanding. 2) Students can solve part-whole fraction problems well but others less. This also imply that students' fraction understanding is partial. 3) Half of the subject(N=98) cannot pose problems that involve fraction and fraction operation. And some succeeded applied the concept mistakenly. To understand fraction, various fraction subconstructs have to be integrated as whole one. To facilitate this integration, fraction program should focus on unit, partitioning and quantity. This may be achieved by following activities: * Building on informal knowledge of fraction * Focusing on meaning other than symbol * Various partitioning activities * Facing various representation * Emphasizing quantitative aspects of fraction * Understanding the meanings of fraction operation Through these activities, teacher must help students construct various faction concept image and apply it to meaningful situation. Especially, to help students to construct various concept image and to use fraction meaningfully to pose problems, much time should be spent to problem posing using fraction.
