  • We developed a local-scale ecophysiological model, Sim-CYCLE Fine by modifying Sim-CYCLE which was developed for a global scale simulation. Sim-CYCLE fine is able to simulate not only carbon fluxes but also plant growth with various time-steps from an hour to a month. The model outputs of $CO_2$ flux and biomass/LAI were highly reliable; we validated the model results with measurements from the eddy covariance technique and the harvest method ($R^2$ values of around 0.9 for both). The results suggested that the phonology and the seasonal dynamics of the $C_3/C4$ plant communities affected significantly the carbon fluxes and the plant growth during the plant growing season.

  • We present IR flux density measurements, models of the broadband SED, and results of SED modeling for the Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) 3C 58. We find that the Herschel flux density seems to be slightly lower than suggested by interpolation of previous measurements in nearby wavebands, implying that there may be multiple electron populations in 3C 58. We model the SED using a simple stationary one-zone and a more realistic time-evolving multi-zone scenario. The latter includes variations of flow properties in the PWN (injected energy, magnetic field, and bulk speed), radiative energy losses, adiabatic expansion, and diffusion, similar to previous PWN models. From the modeling, we find that a PWN age of 2900-5400 yrs is preferred and that there may be excess emission at ${\sim}10^{11}Hz$. The latter may imply multiple populations of electrons in the PWN.

  • The total global emission of $CO_2$ from soils is recognized as one of the largest fluxes in the global carbon cycle. Especially it is necessary to quantify the amount of $CO_2$ emitted by the organic material decomposition processes of microorganisms in the soil, because it becomes one of a factor for determining the carbon stocks in the soil. This study was conducted to estimate the impact of the Korean water deer(Hydropotes inermis)' feces to the soil organic matter. Also, effects of Korean water deer' feces on $CO_2$ emissions of soil and land use pattern dependent $CO_2$ flux quantification are studied. The organic materials in the Korean water deer' feces significantly changed organic matter content of soil and influenced the activity of soil microorganisms, both changing of respiration of the soil and physical chemical components in soil. In particular, C/N ratio and the $CO_2$ flux of soil of four regions (Rice paddy, Fallow ground, Salix koreensis community, Phragmites australis community) showed a statistically highly significant correlation (P<0.01) with the presence or absence of feces. $CO_2$ flux of soil affected by the feces was 2-20 times higher than the soil unaffected by the feces. This study has great significance to quantify the extent of the material circulation and its impact to the terrestrial ecosystem and soil zone throughout Korean water deer' feces. Feces of wildlife can affect soil and soil material circulation.

  • The evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal round tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 7.75 mm, and length of 5 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 500 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $-5^{\circ}C$ to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 40 $kW/m^2$. The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. In comparison with teat results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

  • Effects of the spherically shaped Ge and the rod-like carbon-coated Ge on the superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ were investigated. Pure Ge and carbon-coated Ge nano-powders were synthesized under the different amount of $CH_4$ (0 to 5 kPa) by using DC thermal plasma method. When the $CH_4$ was added ~100 nm sized Ge with a spherical shape changed to rod-like morphology with a diameter of ~30-70 nm and a length of ~400-500 nm. Also it was confirmed that thin carbon layers of a few nanometers were formed along the rod length and the agglomerated carbons were found on the edges of rods. Pure spherical Ge and Ge/C rods were mixed and milled with Mg & B precursor to form the doped $MgB_2$ bulk samples by the solid-state reaction method. Almost no change of $T_c$ was noticed for the pure Ge-added $MgB_2$, whereas $T_c$ was found to decrease with the Ge/C-added $MgB_2$ samples. It was found that the pure spherical Ge showed to have a negative effect on the flux pinning of $MgB_2$. However, Ge/C rods can enhance the flux pinning property of $J_c$ due to the coated carbon on Ge rods.

  • This research has been performed to provide fundamental design aspects of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators(PMSGs) for a kilowatt class wind turbine. When it comes to kilowatt class wind turbines, the typical type of generators are Axial Flux Permanent Magnet(AFPM) generators. However, Radial Flux Permanent Magnet(RFPM) generators have been optimally designed to study the output characteristics of a kilowatt class wind turbine in Graduate School of Wind Energy, POSTECH. An existing squirrel-cage rotor has been modified for another newly designed permanent magnet rotor to utilize the commercially existing stator rotor. Electromagnetic analysis utilizing Finite Element Methods tools(ANSYS, MAXWELL 2D) has been applied to analyze the system.

  • This paper describes a control scheme for direct torque and flux control of Induction machines using space vector modulation. The proposed predictive flux control scheme has directly calculated the reference voltage space vector based on Stator flux errors in order to control the torque and flux. This proposed control scheme has not the requirement of a separate current error, thereby improving transient performance and also has the advantage of less torque ripple in steady state with a fixed switching period. The effect of proposed method has been proven by simulations. It is concluded that the proposed control topology produces better results for steady state operation than the classical direct torque control.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the filtration characteristics of membrane modules according to hollow fiber dispersion for direct solid-liquid separation of activated sludge. 2 bundle, 4 bundle, and 10 bundle, and 10 bundle module used in this experiment according to hollow fiber dispersion was manufactured at laboratory and permeate flux and transmembrane pressure(TMP) of each module were observed under a suction pressure of 0.5kgf/c$m^2$. As the hollow fibers were dispersed, permeate flux was increased and TMP was decreased. Permeate flux and TMP of each module was 15.0 $\ell$/$m^2$.h and 31.8 cmHg for 2 bundle, 16.0 $\ell$/$m^2$ .h and 17.4 cmHg for 4 bundle, and 20.4 $\ell$/m2 .h and 31.8 cmHg for 10 bundle. In conclusion, the membrane fouling is expected to be decrease by maintaining lower TMP with hollow fiber dispersion.

  • This article describes effect of post heat treatment on wear characteristics of thermally sprayed Co-based self-flux alloy coating. Co-based self-flux alloy coatings were deposited on steel substrates using a flame spray process. Post heat treatments were carried out at 800, 900, 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$ for 30min in a vacuum chamber. For analysis of effect of post heat treatment on mechanical properties, wear test and hardness test were performed for post heat-treated coating specimen. Microstructures of heat treated coating layer and wear track were examined using SEM and EDS. Wear loss and hardness became lower with increasing post heat treatment temperature.
