To grasp the migration characteristics in the Busan Metropolitan Area (BMA), this study analyzed household characteristics and migration selectivity. The major findings of the study are as follows: first, young (especially 25 to 34 years of age) and single person households have greater propensity to migrate out from BMA, and their home ownership rate is low. These trends are much stronger in households that migrate out towards the Seoul Metropolitan Area from Busan. Second, age and educational selectivity of migration is evident. The characteristics of movers are quite different from those of stayers at Busan. Young people are more likely to migrate out of Busan, and higher levels of education are deeply associated with higher mobility. Through analyzing four high schools in Busan, it is acknowledged that most honor students entered 4-year universities in Seoul. The outflow of highly educated young people may induce the brain drain. Busan is undergoing both population decline and the problems caused by the brain drain.
The research deals with the establishment of transportation areas in the metropolitan cities. The purpose is three-fold ; 1) to review the existing literature : 2) to analyze the commuting (work and school) pattern and interregional movement pattern of passengers and freights ; 3) to establish the metropolitan transportation area based on the above analyses. The transportation area is defined by the analysis of trip pattern to the center city of each metropolitan area. The detailed indices for establishment are selected by the rank-size and time-distance analyses. For the operational purpose, the study defines 3 different transportation areas as follows : the first transportation area means the directly effecting region of the center city ; the second means the region with many reverse trips and development potentials ; and the third means the indirectly effecting region. It can be concluded that the first transportation area includes 10 cities and 5 counties in Seoul metropol tan region, Yangdsan-Gun, Kimhae-Gun and Kimhae-Si in Busan, Dalsung-Gun, Chilgok-Gun and Kyungsan-Gun in Daegu, Hwasung-Gun and Raju-Gun in Kwangju, and Daeduk-Gun in Daejun. These results could be expected to have many implications for the establishment of area-wide public transportation network, the metropolitan transportation decision-making bodies and others.

Temporal and horizontal distributions of surface ozone concentrations covering the Busan metropolitan area were simulated by UAM -V (The Variable grid Urban Airshed Model) that was run with meteorological inputs taken from MM5 for ozone episode day (18 July 1999). UAM-V underestimated the daily maximum ozone con-centration about 14 ppb on average at all monitoring sites within Busan area comparing with observed value. but the correlation between observed and simulated values showed quite significant (R = 0.896, p< 0.01 on average). Higher concentrations of ozone occurred near the city center and industrial areas (western side of city) with high levels of anthropogenic source in the morning, and transport of ozone and its precursors by sea breeze developed in the afternoon contributed to elevated ozone levels in downwind rural areas. Particalarly in slightly downwind area of city center, the highest daily maximum ozone concentration ($\geq$120 ppb) was simulated by UAM-V at 1400 LST. Consequently, local environments including emission distributions and land -sea breeze circulation influenced ozone distributions in the Busan metropolitan area.
We have analysed the observed surface and vertical meteorological data to get atmospheric information over the Busan metropolitan area. For this, we have selected 10 days in all season such as spring, summer I(Jangma season), summer II(hot season), autumn and winter. The result which have performed cluster analysis using atmospheric data represented that these days are included to most frequently appeared synoptic cluster. We have simulated wind field around Busan metropolitan area which is assigned as $1km^2$ using RAMS. The calculated air temperature and the wind speed was similar to the observed the that, and the trends of daily variation showed good agreement. RMSE and IOA also showed reliable value. These results indicated the RAMS is able to simulate and predict detailed atmospheric phenomenon.
The purpose of this study is to highlight the National Classification System related to cleanup the soil contaminated sites and to provide some guidance to address the priority management rank system before the remediation for Busan metropolitan city. Based on the previous soil investigation data, the quantitative classification of vulnerable areas for soil pollution was performed to successfully manage the contaminated sites in Busan. Ten evaluation factors indicating the high soil pollution possibility were used for the priority management ranking system and 10 point was assigned for each factor which was evenly divided by 10 class intervals. For 16 Gu/Guns in Busan, the score of each evaluation factor was assigned according to the ratio of the area (or the number) between in each Gu (or Gun) and in Busan. Ten scores for each Gu (or Gun) was summed up to prioritize the vulnerable Gu or Guns for soil pollution in Busan. Results will be available to determine the most urgent area to cleanup in each Gu (or Gun) and also to assist the municipal government to design a successful and cost-effective site management strategy in Busan.

The experiment was carried out to examine the effect of planting date on the growth and marketable yield on rain shielding vinyl house in Busan area. Okra cultivars were 'Jukokra', 'Greensod', 'Marumichang', 'Betafive' and 'Akamarumichang'. Planting date were June and July. Plant height, stem length and leaf width were significantly different between various cultivars. Plant height and stem length were best at 'Akamarumichang' among all cultivars tested and the 'Betafive' cultivars showed the lowest plant growth of June treatment. There was no significant difference in planting of July treatment. Marketable yield of okra fruit was affected by planting date. In case of June planting date, 'Betafive' cultivars produced the highest marketable yield (4,286 kg/10a) in green fruit. Marketable yield of green okra fruit was increased at 'Betafive' and 'Greensod' cultivars, whereas 'Marumichang' cultivars was lowerd. Therefore, the optimum planting date was considered June planting in rain shielding culture of okra in Busan area.
We investigated the molecular epidemiological characteristic of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains isolated from stool samples in Busan from 2004 to 2006. Among 142 isolates of S. aureus, 49 isolates (34.5%) were confirmed as MRSA. With the antimicrobial susceptibility tests, 37 isolates (75.5%) showed multiple resistance to more than 10 antibiotics, but all isolates were sensitive to vancomycin. All of MRSA had enterotoxin A in 30.6%, B 4.1%, C 8.3%, D, C/G, A 2.0% and None 51%. PFGE of SmaI-digested chromosomal DNA was performed on 49 sporadic MRSA isolates. Restriction fragment patterns consisted of 8 to 14 fragments ranged in size from 48.5 to 630.5 kbp. We could divided the isolates into 7 groups ($I{\sim}VII$) by analyzing PFGE patterns. Group I subdivided as 2 subgroups and 17 (34.7%) strains belong to the group I. Dendrogram of PFGE patterns showed that MRSA strains in Busan were heterogeneous but we could find out minor homogeneity in hospital.

Background: This study aimed to analyze the prehospital process and reperfusion therapy process of acute ischemic stroke in Busan metropolitan area and examine the impact of living arrangement on the early management and functional outcomes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods: The patients who diagnosed with AIS and received reperfusion therapy at the Busan Regional Cardiovascular Center between September 2020 and May 2023 were selected. We investigated the patients' hospital arrival time (onset to door time) and utilization of 119 emergency ambulance services. Additionally, various time matrices related to reperfusion therapy after hospital were examined, along with the functional outcome at the 90-day after treatment. Results: Among the 753 AIS patients who underwent reperfusion therapy, 166 individuals (22.1%) were living alone. AIS patients living alone experienced significant delays in symptom detection (p<0.05) and hospital arrival compared to AIS patients with cohabitants (370.1 minutes vs. 210.2 minutes, p<0.001). There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of 119 ambulance utilization and time metrics related with the reperfusion therapy. Independent predictors of prognosis in AIS patients were found to be age above 70, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score at admission, tissue plasminogen activator, living alone (odds ratio [OR], 1.785; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.155-2.760) and interhospital transfer (OR, 1.898; 95% CI, 1.152-3.127). Delay in identification of AIS was shown significant correlation (OR, 2.440; 95% CI, 1.070-5.561) at living alone patients. Conclusion: This study revealed that AIS patients living alone in the Busan metropolitan region, requiring endovascular treatment, face challenges in the pre-hospital phase, which significantly impact their prognosis.

In this study, we suggested adequate control technology by analyzing emission process and main chemical of VOC/HAPs generated from four paint factories in Busan area. And we estimated whether Kapok fiber, which is a natural material, can be commercially used for an absorbent by testing adsorption ability. As a result of this sturdy, above 60% of VOC/HAPs was volatilized and dispersed inside the working place without conducting control system of facilities during manufacturing paints. Concentration profile of VOC/HAPs, which is volatile naturally outside the factories, is surveyed above 70% at Toluene, Ethylbenzene, and Xylene. And a result of evaluation of odor attribution level about the component whose Odor Threshold is known, it is estimated that major cause material of A, B, C factories is Toluene and that of D factory is m/p-Xylene. And that result presented design arguments such as facilities specifications, activated carbon filling volume, and replace cycle of activated carbon as control technology. Also, that result presented emission process improvement such as adsorption of central-controlled ventilation device, installation of inlet flenge, and potable cleaning process. The rate of pollutant adsorption of Kapok fiber, which is natural material, is indicated about 91.9%, 66.7%. That result validated the possibility as replacement of activated carbon.

This study investigates the level of elementary school parents' satisfaction and recognition on the education gap between the eastern and western part of the Busan Metropolitan City. The gist of the discussion centers on the equal educational opportunities of the schooling, non-schooling. To accomplish this research, we practice the questionaries about the education development in Busan to 234 parents who reside in the eastern and western part in Busan. The results of survey are as follows. First of all, there is a broad distinction between the two area about parents' attitude towards children. Second, the results of schooling satisfaction are higher in eastern Busan area. Third, the parents of eastern part also show their satisfaction of schooling support. The results indicate that nation and local government must develop the short and long range plan for students from low-income families.
