A Design of a PI Compensator for a Bidirectional DC-DC Converter in a DC Distributed Power System

  • The Voltage Bus Conditioner(VBC) is a bidirectional DC-DC converter for damping the instability and any transients of the bus voltage in a DC Distributed Power System(DPS). In this paper, a PI controller for the VBC has been designed for the frequency domain. The proposed PI controller not only dampens the bus transients, but also keeps the storage voltage level. Simulation by Matlab/Simulink and experimental results are presented for the validity of the proposed control technique.

  • Active AC/DC converters with PWM operation are utilized to regulate rectified DC bus voltage of a permanent magnet synchronous generator in the maritime DC power system. A DC bus voltage regulation strategy that exploits the six-step operation is proposed in this study. Compared with that of the PWM operation, switching loss of the converter can be significantly reduced under the six-step operation. Moreover, conduction loss can also be reduced due to the high modulation index and reduced flux-weakening current of the six-step operation. A controller is used for the proposed DC bus voltage regulation strategy to verify its validity with the simulation and experimental setup. The simulation and the experimental test results showed that the converter loss reduces to a maximum of 70% and 19%, respectively.

  • Distribution networks are operated in radial fashion during the normal state. Loop configuration is also required temporally in case of live load transfer among the adjacent feeders. Voltage angles of each substation buses are very important data in order to calculate power flow of the loop structured distribution feeders. This paper proposes substation bus voltage angle calculation method using voltage angle difference measured at the normally open tie switches. Simulation case studies using Matlab simulink have been performed to establish feasibility of proposed method.

  • Motor bus transfer involves the process of transferring a bus that has several critical motors to an alternate source of power when the main normal power source feeding them is interrupted. Bus transfer is a time-critical application in which the transfer progress depends on various parameters such as the type of motor, load on the motor at the time of transfer, inertia of the motor, and the combined open-circuit time constant of various motors present on the bus at the time of transfer. This paper present the result of modeling and simulation of nuclear power motor bus using ETAP(Electrical Transient Analyzing Program) program for motor and motor bus residual voltage decay characteristics.

A Smooth LVRT Control Strategy for Single-Phase Two-Stage Grid-Connected PV Inverters

  • Based on the inherent relationship between dc-bus voltage and grid feeding active power, two dc-bus voltage regulators with different references are adopted for a grid-connected PV inverter operating in both normal grid voltage mode and low grid voltage mode. In the proposed scheme, an additional dc-bus voltage regulator paralleled with maximum power point tracking controller is used to guarantee the reliability of the low voltage ride-through (LVRT) of the inverter. Unlike conventional LVRT strategies, the proposed strategy does not require detecting grid voltage sag fault in terms of realizing LVRT. Moreover, the developed method does not have switching operations. The proposed technique can also enhance the stability of a power system in case of varying environmental conditions during a low grid voltage period. The operation principle of the presented LVRT control strategy is presented in detail, together with the design guidelines for the key parameters. Finally, a 3 kW prototype is built to validate the feasibility of the proposed LVRT strategy.

  • The load bus voltage is controlled by not only using several control device but also generation bus voltage adjustment. This paper deals with a load bus voltage control problem which used optimization and load flow technique. The usage of proposed control algorithm is verified through the comparison with normal load flow on the IEEE 14 sample system. The proposed control algorithm can be used to optimal decision of position and capacity for voltage control device.

  • This paper presents an analysis of the voltage stability when the contingency is occured in the power system. The evaluation of voltage stability is examined by the system identification based on T/L losses and percent indicator which represents how relatively far-off from the voltage collapse. When contingency happens, the bus voltages can be calculated using the EMTP and then, the time-interval in contingency is linearized between the known operating points in nose curves. For the sample study, the 5-bus and 7-bus systems are selected and, countermeasures for the contingency are established in view of the voltage stability.

Adaptive undervoltage protection scheme for safety bus in nuclear power plants

  • In the event of a short-circuit accident on a 4.16 kV non-safety bus, the voltage is temporarily lowered as backflow occurs on the safety bus. In such cases, the undervoltage relay of the safety bus shall not pick up the undervoltage so as not to interfere with the operation of the safety motors. The aim of this study is to develop an adaptive undervoltage protection scheme for the 4.16 kV safety bus considering the faults on the 13.8 kV and 4.16 kV non-safety buses connected to secondary windings of the three winding transformers, UAT and SAT. The result of this study will be the adaptive undervoltage protection scheme for the safety bus of nuclear power plants satisfying functional requirements of the safety related medium voltage motors. The adaptive undervoltage protection scheme can be implemented into an integrated digital protective relay to make user friendly and reliable protection scheme.

  • The complexity and severe nonlinearity of multi-machine power systems make it difficult to design a control input for voltage regulation using modern control theory. This paper presents a model-based PID control scheme for the regulation of the bus voltage to a desired value. To this end, a fourth-order linear system is constructed using input and output data obtained using the TSAT (Transient Security Assessment Tool); the input is assumed to be applied to the grid through the STATCOM (STATic synchronous COMpensator) and the output from the grid is a bus voltage. On the basis of the model, it is identified as to which open-loop poles of the system make the response to a step input oscillatory. To reduce this oscillatory response effectively, a model-based PID control is designed in such a way that the oscillatory poles are no longer problematic in the closed loop. Simulation results show that the proposed PID control dampens the response effectively.
