One of the important advantages of multichannel switches is the incorporation of inherent fault tolerance into the switching fabric. For example, if a link which belongs to the multichannel group fails, the remaining links can assume responsibility for some of the traffic on the failed link. On the other hand, if faults occur in the switching elements, it can lead to erroneous routing and sequencing in the multichannel switch. We investigate several fault localization algorithms in multichannel crossbar ATM switches with a view to early fault recovery, The optimal algorithm gives the best performance in terms of time to localization but is computationally complex which makes it difficult to implement. We develop an on-line algorithm which is computationally mote efficient than the optimal algorithm. We evaluate its performance through simulation. The simulation results show that performance of the on line algorithm is only slightly sub-optimal for both random and bursty traffic. Finally a fault recovery algorithm is described which utilizes the information provided by the fault localization algorithm.

System Packet Interface Level 4 Phase(SPI-4.2) is an interface for packet and cell transfer between a physical layer(PHY) device and a link layer device, for aggregate bandwidths of OC-192 ATM and Packet Over Sonet/SDH(POS), as well as 10Gbps Ethernet applications. In this paper, we performs the research for SPI-4.2. Also we analyze the performance of SPI-4.2 interface module after modeling using C programming language. This paper shows that SPI-4.2 interface module with 512-word FIFO depth is able to be adapted for the offered loads to 97% in random uniform traffic and 94% in bursty traffic with bursty length 32. SPI-4.2 interface module can experience an performance degradation due to heavy overhead when it massively receives small size packets less than 14-byte. SPI-4.2 interface module is suited for line cards in gigabit/terabit routers, and optical cross-connect switches, and SONET/SDH-based transmission systems.

ATM Forum has defined a new service class for data applications called Available Bit Rate(ABR) Service, which has highly bursty traffic and unpredictable burst size. It is desirable that we reduce the probability of retrans mission of packets by minimizing the loss of cells because the traffic is much more sensitive to loss than delay. The Forum has also selected the Rate-Based Control for the ABR service and proposed EPRCA as the control mechanism for the service. This paper proposes the combination of EPRCA and the other feedb ack control mechanisms such as BECN and BP. The combined control mechanism control ABR traffic more efficiently and the simulation results show that the network performance can be improved by choosing the appropriate parameters.

An input-output buffering switch operates in either of tow different cell loss modes; Backpressure mode and Queueloss mode. In the previous studies, the Backpressrue mode is more effective at low traffic loads, and the Queueloss mode performs better at high traffic. We propose a new operation mode, called Hybrid mode, which adopts the advantages of he Backpressure and the Queueloss mode. Backpressure and Queueloss modes are distinguished from whether a cell loss occurs at the output buffer or not when output buffer overflows, irrespective of input buffer status. In order to simply combine Backpressure and Queueloss mode, the change of input traffic load must be measured. However, in the Hybrid mode, simply both of the input and output buffer overflow and checked out to determine the cell discard. The performance of the Hybrid mode is compared with those of the Backpressure and the Queueloss mode under random and bursty traffic. This paper show that the Hybrid mode always gives the best performance results for most ranges of load values.

In this paper, we propose a new connection admission control(CAC) algorithm for traffic control in ATM network in which traffic estimation is performed based on user-specified parameters at every moment of connection request or connection release by recursive formula which makes real-time calculation possible. And traffic estimation using cell flow measurement is carried out when the number of connectioned calls does not change during a measurement reflection period. Performance analysis of the proposed method is carried out using several aspects for homogeneous and heterogeneous bursty traffic. The results showed that the proposed CAC method revealed better performance, than conventional CAC method for burst model in both utilization and QoS point of view.
IEEE 802.15.6 standard technology is proposed for low-power wireless communication in, on and around body, where vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure, ECG, and EEG signals are transmitted as a type of data packet. Especially, these vital signs should be delivered in real time, so that the latency from slave node to hub node can be one of the pivotal performance requirements. However, in the case of IEEE 802.15.6 technology data retransmission caused by transmission failure can be done in the next superframe. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose an adaptive polling algorithm for IEEE 802.15.6 technology. The proposing algorithm makes the hub to look for an appropriate time period in order to make data retransmission within the superframe. Through the performance evaluation, the proposing algorithm achieves a 61% and a 73% latency reduction compared to those of IEEE 802.15.6 technology in the environment of 70% traffic offered load with 10ms and 100ms superframe period. In addition, the proposing algorithm prevents bursty traffic transmission condition caused by mixing retransmission traffic with the traffic reserved for transmission. Through the proposing adaptive polling algorithm, it will be possible to transmit time-sensitive vital signs without severe traffic delay.
TCP is ill-suited to real-time multimedia applications. Its bursty transmission, and abrupt and frequent wide rate fluctuations cause high delay jitters and sudden quality degradation of multimedia applications. Deploying non congestion controlled traffic results in extreme unfairness towards competing TCP traffic. Therefore, they need to be enhanced with congestion control schemes that not only am at reducing loss ratios and improve bandwidth utilization but also are fair towards competing TCP connections. This paper proposes a differentiated rate adaptation algorithm based on loss and round trip time. Rate in a sender quickly responds to loss ratio and holds steady state. Additionally, this algorithm reduces loss ratio by loss prediction in a receiver.

We analyze the queueing model for leaky bucket (LB) scheme with dynamic arrivals and token rates. In other words, in our LB scheme the arrivals and token rates are changed according to the buffer occupancy. In telecommunication networks, the LB scheme has been used as a policing function to prevent congestion. By considering bursty and correlated properties of input traffic, the arrivals are assumed to follow a Markov-modulated Poisson process (MMPP). We derive the distribution of system state, and obtain the loss probability and the mean waiting time. The analysis is done by using the embedded Markov chain and supplementary variable method. We also present some numerical examples to show the effect of our proposed model.

ABR uses the extra network resource more efficiently which uses not the guaranteed service in ATM and supports the best effort which the characteristics of application is bursty and maximum transfer rate is high. Switches for using ABR flow control differentiate EFCI switches (which supply only the congestion state information) from ER switches (which supply fair rate to source). This paper analyses the switches operation technique for efficiently managing ABR traffic in case which the network mixes EFCI switches and ER switches in ATM.
The goal of Medical multimedia server is to develop computer hardware and software which would enable electronic access, storage, transmission, and display of patient data and images. Since the current network only provides so called "best-effort" services, it is impossible to satisfy QoS guarantee that is required for real time application services for emergency room, operating room etc. Accordingly, world-wide research is being made for a variety of services to provide QoS. he goal of DiffServ is to offer scalable differentiated service in Internet which are made possible by traffic classification and conditioning only performed at an edge(or a boundary) node. In case DiffServ was deployed in the Medical multimedia network, it is difficult to estimate how the QoS mechanism would affect totally the network performance. Therefore, we need to verify by simulation the design of algorithm which provide a variety of differentiated services. In QoS for Medical multimedia network, a simulator is designed and implemented using OPNET to investigate the performance of DiffServ QoS support mechanism. The developed DiffServ simulator may generate packets according to random, and bursty traffic models in order to incorporate diverse traffic conditions in the Medical multimedia network environment. Based on our simulation results, we confirmed that service differentiation is possible by using the EF(Expedited Forwarding) class in DiffServ networks.
