Four Species of the Family Erebidae (Lepidoptera), New to Korea

  • This paper reports four species of Erebidae from the southern part of Korea: two Boletobiinae, Honeyania ragusana (Freyer, 1845), Enispa masuii Sugi, 1982, one Hermininae, Adrapsa ablualis Walker, 1859, and one Arctiinae, Stictane rectilinea (Snellen, 1879). Honeyania ragusana can be distinguished by the following: a blackish dot on the apex of the forewing with strongly curved medial lines, a long slender uncus and a strongly distally bifurcated valva with a large distally expanded costa and a thumb-shaped process of sacculus on the male genitalia as well as a sclerotized antrum, strongly tapered ductus bursae, and large corpus bursae on the female genitalia. Enispa masuii, a lichen feeder, can be distinguished by the whitish medial lines of the grayish fore- and hindwings, and a pair of rounded ball-shaped lamella antevaginalis, long, sclerotized ductus bursae, and pear-shaped corpus bursae without signum of the female genitalia. Adrapsa ablualis can be distinguished by the whitish medial lines of the fore- and hindwings and large medial process of the costa and dentate distal margin of the valva of the male genitalia. Stictane rectilinea can be distinguished by the broad dark grayish medial band of the forewing and the long knife-shaped valva with a strongly hooked process on the distal part of the sacculus of the male genitalia.

A Microscopic Study of the Bursa Copulatrix of Gonepteryx (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) (Gonepteryx속(인시목: 흰나비과) 교미낭의 미세구조에 관한 비교분석)

  • Bursae copulatrix of six species of Gonepteryx were morphologically compared using a steroscopic microscope and a scaning electron microscope. As other genera of Pieridae, appendix bursae were developed in this genus and the shapes of the bursae copulatrix were different to species. However, shapes of signa were stable and were not distinct to species. On innersurfaces around ribbon-like signa, many folds were developed and most of inner-surface processes were widely distributed on the oppostie side of signa. Most of innersurface processes were spindle-like and basal ridges were developed. G. aspasia and G. taiwana were recognized as the most similar species in Gonepteryx considering shapes of bursae copulatrix and the condition of innersurface processes.

Agonopterix issikii (Lepidoptera: Depressariidae), New to Korea

  • A depressariid moth, Agonopterix issikii Clarke, 1962, feeing on Orixa japonica was newly recorded from Korea. Agonopterix issikii can be characterized by the brownish forewing mottled dark brown and black scales that show a dentate line at the base and three minute blackish dots in triangular at the median, and the basally pale gray hindwing. Agonopterix issikii is similar to A. ocellana Fabricius in external appearance but can be distinguished by the presence of brownish forewing with three blackish triangular dots at the median. The male genitalia of Agonopterix issikii can be characterized by the elliptic gnathos, the triangular socius, the rectangular valva with rather straight cuiller, and the stout phallus with a short basal process and the absence of cornutus. The female genitalia can be characterized by the funnel-shaped ostium bursae, the long ducuts bursae, and the ovate corpus bursae with a rounded patch of signa. To date, 12 species of the genus Agonopterix have been recorded in Korea.

A New Report of Odontosia sieversii (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae) from Korea

  • In Korea, 104 species of Notodontidae have been recorded. The genus Odontosia H$\ddot{u}$bner is characterized by the elongate and serrate margin of its forewing and the prominent harpe of valva and many spinular cornuti on the vesica of the male genitalia and the robust ductus bursae and large, ovate and sclerotized corpus bursae of the female genitalia. Only one species of Odontosia, O. patricia Stichel, 1918, has been reported from Korea. In this paper, Odontosia sieversii ($M\acute{e}n\acute{e}tri\grave{e}s$, 1856) is newly added to the Korean fauna based on three male specimens collected at Mt. Bangtaesan, Gangwon-do, Korea. Diagnosis for the species and photographs of adult and genitalia of the genus Odontosia are provided.

  • A nolid species, Roeselia triangulalis (Leech) is reported for the first time from Korea. Two males were collected from Jeju Island, South Korea. Roeselia triangulalis can be distinguished by the bipectinate male antennae, broad frons, long labial palpi, costally dark brownish spot and the rounded dark brownish postmedial line of forewing. In the male genitalia, the long saccus, the slender valve with distally expanded and spine-like harpe and long spinular cornutus of vesica are distinguishing characters. In the female genitalia, the simple sterigma, the long ductus bursae and the large ovate corpus bursae with a lip-shaped signum are distinguishing characters. Diagnosis and description of the species are given with the figures of the male genitalia.

First Record of Sphingid Moth, Macroglossum corythus (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) from Korea

  • A sphingid species, Macroglossum corythus Walker, 1856 is newly recorded from Korea. Macroglossum corythus can be characterized by grayish or dark greenish fore- and hindwings, blackish basal, ante- and postmedial lines with a blackish discal dot on the forewing and transverse antemedial line, as well as a strongly dentate postmedial line and a thick, dark brownish tinged subterminal line on the hindwing. The male genitalia of Macroglossum corythus can be characterized by the long saccular process of valva and the phallus with one hooked distal process and the large penshaped cornutus and a notched ridge. The female genitalia of Macroglossum corythus can be characterized by the long tubular ductus bursae and the long ovate corpus bursae with multiple stripes and a long triangular patch of minute signa. To date, six species of the genus Macroglossum have been identified in Korea.

  • A sterrhine species, Perixera punctata (Warren) is reported for the first time from Korea. One male and one female were collected from Jeju Island, South Korea. Perixera punctata can be distinguished by the long bipectinate male antennae, the blackish discal dot and a large dark grayish dot on the subcosta of the forewings and a large dark brownish discal dot and blackish undulating postmedial line on the hindwings. In the male genitalia, a long slender valva with two arm-shaped costal processes is a distinguishing character. In the female genitalia, long and medially twisted ductus bursae with a colliculum, and large, ovate corpus bursae with minute dots are distinguishing characters. Diagnosis and description of the species are given with figures of the male and female genitalia.

Condica dolorosa (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), New to Korea

  • A noctuid moth, Condica dolorosa (Walker, 1865) was newly recorded from Korea. Condica dolorosa can be distinguished by the blackish forewing that shows irregular yellowish dots on the ante- and postmedian and a large pale yellowish dot at dorsum, and yellowish white discal dot with renal marking, and the basally whitish hindwing. Externally, Condica dolorosa is similar to C. cyclicoides but can be distinguished by the dark ochreous dots on dorsum of the forewing. The female genitalia of C. dolorosa are similar to those of C. cyclicoides but can be distinguished by the large bowl-shaped ostium bursae with a midventral invagination and the long ductus bursae. To date, five species of the genus Condica have been recorded in Korea.

A New Record of Hadennia nakatanii (Lepidoptera, Erebidae) from Korea

  • One species of the Herminiinae, Hadennia nakatanii Owada is newly recorded from Korea. Hadennia nakatanii can be distinguished by the light blackish forewing with the relatively thick, transverse medial line, a large light yellowish discal dot, the thick blackish slanted band from the apex to the middle part of the dorsum, and the light blackish hindwing, basally suffused with black and medially broadly suffused with black. The female genitalia can be diagnosed by the simple antrum, the long strongly sclerotized ductus bursae, and the large rectangular corpus bursae with a small uplifted signa patch with minute spicules. We provided the figures of adult and the genitalia with short notes on distribution.

New Record of a Hepialid Moth Species, Korscheltellus lupulina (Lepidoptera: Hepialidae) from Korea

  • The hepialid species, Korscheltellus lupulina (Linnaeus) is newly recorded from Korea. A female specimen of K. lupulina was collected on Jeju Island, southern Korea. This species can be distinguished by the whitish linear marking on the postmedian and dorsum of the forewing but these markings are often unseen in females. The female genitalia can be diagnosed by the semi-rounded ninth abdominal tergum, a pair of semi-rounded ninth abdominal sternum with weakly produced, semi-rounded central plate-shaped medial region, a pair of narrow band-shaped subanal plates, the short, thin ductus bursae, and the large, ball-shaped corpus bursae without a signum. Currently, there are four genera and five species of the Hepialidae distributed in Korea.
