  • A scavenger of superoxide anion radical which causes oxygen toxicity was isolated from Capsella bursa-pastoris, and its physicochemical properties were investigated. The scavenger was isolated and purified by solvent fractionation and liquid column chromatographies (Amberlite XAD-2, Sephadex LH-20, Bio gel P-2, ODS (silica gel with 100% octadecyl silanization)). An active compound of 0.25 g was finally isolated by Fast Protein Liquid chromatography (FPLC) from 100 g ethanol extract of Capsella bursa-pastoris. A 50% decrease of superoxide anion radical was obtained with the scavenger compound of 0.58 g. The compound was assumed to be a phenolic glycoside from its physicochemical properties.

  • We investigated the natural antimicrobial activities of Capsella bursa-pastoris water, methanol, and ethanol extracts. Antimicrobial activities of these extracts and sodium benzoate on Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli were compared. The inhibition zone diameters of the methanol and ethanol extracts of Capsella bursa-pastoris were 13-20 mm and 12-20 mm, respectively, which were larger than those of sodium benzoate (11-15 mm). The minimum inhibitory concentrations of Capsella bursa-pastoris methanol and ethanol extracts were 12.5-20 mg/mL. These results indicate that Capsella bursa-pastoris methanol and ethanol extracts can be used as natural antimicrobial agents.

  • This experiment was carried out to study the germination behavior and the density effect of Capsella bursa-pastoris Medicus on barley yields. Seed dormancy of C. bursa-pastoris was broken on middle of July. No light was required for germination of C. bursa-pastoris seeds. Higher germination showed at $15^{\circ}C$ than at $0^{\circ}C$ or $6^{\circ}C$. Effective temperature for dormancy breakdown of seed was at $5^{\circ}C$ for 30 days rather than at $40^{\circ}C$. Reduction in barley yield showed with increasing the plant density of C. bursa-pastoris.

  • The histological profiles and endocrine cells in the bursa of Fabricius of the duck (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhyncos, Linne) were studied at 23 days of incubation, at hatching, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 5 weeks, 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 9 weeks, 10 weeks and 32 weeks after hatching. Histologically epithelium of bursa Fabricius were pseudostratified columnar and simple columnar epithelium. Numerous lymphatic follicles and well developed plica were observed in this study. The sections were reacted immunohistochemically using antisera specific to bovine chromogranin(BCG), serotonin and somatostatin antisera using immunohistochemical methods. A few number of BCG-immunoreactive cells were detected from 23 days of incubation to 5 weeks after hatching and serotonin-immunoreactive cells were also observed from 23 days of incubation to 3 weeks after hatching. No somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were detected in this study.

  • The main purpose of the present study was to investigate coordinate transformation based on two different systems: one was the World Geodetic System 1984(WGS84) adopted as a reference system for GPS satellite surveying;and another was the current Korean geodetic system based on Bessel ellipsoid. For this purpose, three methods were used to determine 7 parameters as follows: Bursa-Wolf model, Molodensky-Badekas model, and Veis model. The coordinate transformation was carried out using simillity transformation applied the obtained 7 parameters and the precision of transformed coordinate was evaluated. From this results, we found that Bursa-wolf model is more suitable than others for the determination of transformation parameters in Korea.

  • In this study, the effect of steel fiber utilization, boundary conditions, different beam cross-section, and length parameter are investigated on the free vibration behavior of fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete beam on elastic foundation. In the analysis of the beam model recommended by Euler-Bernoulli, a method utilizing Stokes transformations and Fourier Sine series were used. For this purpose, in addition to the control beam containing no fiber, three SCC beam elements were prepared by utilization of steel fiber as 0.6% by volume. The time-dependent fresh properties and some mechanical properties of self-compacting concrete mixtures were investigated. In the modelled beam, four different beam specimens produced with 0.6% by volume of steel fiber reinforced and pure (containing no fiber) SCC were analyzed depending on different boundary conditions, different beam cross-sections, and lengths. For this aim, the effect of elasticity of the foundation, cross-sectional dimensions, beam length, boundary conditions, and steel fiber on natural frequency and frequency parameters were investigated. As a result, it was observed that there is a noticeable effect of fiber reinforcement on the dynamic behavior of the modelled beam.

  • In a project to study the hepatroprotective effect of some plant extracts four plants Ephedra foliate Boiss, Alhagi maurorum Medikus, Capsella bursa-pastoris (L.) Medik. and Hibiscus sabdariffa L. were studied. The ethanol extract of the aerial part of the first three plants and the flowers of H. sabdariffa were subjected to hepatoprotective assays using Wistar albino rats. Liver injury induced in rats using carbon tetrachloride. The biochemical parameters; serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and total bilirubin were estimated as reflection of the liver condition. Based on the good results of the biochemical parameters measurements, histopathological study was performed on the liver of rats treated with E. foliate. The normal appearance of hepatocytes indicated a good protection of the extract from carbon tetrachloride hepatotoxicity. All the results were compared with silymarin, the reference hepatoprotective drug.

  • Light-microscope studies of the coccidial organisms found in the bursa of Fabricius from chickens shelwng some specific signs were carried out, and the etiological agent was estimated as the parasite belonging to the Family Cryptosporiidae. The specific gross Pathological signs were intestinal hemorrhage and atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius and hyperplasia was associated with the presence of organisms attached to the epithelial cells lining the plicae of the bursa of Fabricius in the microscopical findings.

  • A bursa is an obstructive sac filled with synovial fluid and usually occurs in any area of the body exposed to friction. The bursa of the ankle is not a normal anatomical structure and is caused by repetitive trauma, constant friction, or inflammatory disease of the ankle. Bursitis can occur in any bursa in the human body; however it rarely progresses to septic arthritis. We report a rare case of septic ankle arthritis following intractable lateral malleolar bursitis successfully treated with negative-pressure wound therapy.
