Automation of deburring process using vision sensor and TSK fuzzy model (비젼 센서와 TSK형 퍼지를 이용한 디버링 공정의 자동화)

  • In this paper, we present a new approach for the automation of deburring process. An algorithm for teaching skills of a human expert to a robot manipulator is developed. This approach makes use of TSK fuzzy mode that can wxpress a highly nonlinear functional relation with small number of rules. Burr features such as height, width, area, grinding area are extracted from image processing by use of the vision system. Grinding depth, repetitive number and normal grinding force are chosen as control signals representing actions of the human expert. It is verified that our proposed fuzzy model can accurately express the skills of human experts for the deburring process.

DRAM Package Substrate Using Via Cutting Structure (비아 절단 구조를 사용한 DRAM 패키지 기판)

  • A new via cutting structure in 2-layer DRAM package substrate has been fabricated to lower its power distribution network(PDN) impedance. In new structure, part of the via is cut off vertically and its remaining part is designed to connect directly with the bonding pad on the package substrate. These via structure and substrate design not only provide high routing density but also improve the PDN impedance by shortening effectively the path from bonding pad to VSSQ plane. An additional process is not necessary to fabricate the via cutting structure because its structure is completed at the same time during a process of window area formation. Also, burr occurrence is minimized by filling the via-hole inside with a solder resist. 3-dimensional electromagnetic field simulation and S-parameter measurement are carried out in order to validate the effects of via cutting structure and VDDQ/VSSQ placement on the PDN impedance. New DRAM package substrate has a superior PDN impedance with a wide frequency range. This result shows that via cutting structure and power/ground placement are effective in reducing the PDN impedance.

  • In this paper, we studied the micro tool deflection, micro cutting with low temperature, and deformation of micro ribs caused by cutting forces. First, we performed an integrated machining error compensation method based on captured images of tool deflection shapes in micro cutting process. In micro cutting process, micro tool deflection generates very serious problems in contrast to macro tool deflection. To get the real images of micro tool deflection, it is possible to estimate tool deflection in cutting conditions modeled and to compensate for machining errors using an iterative algorithm correcting tool path. Second, in macro cutting fields, the cryogenic cutting process has been applied to cut the refractory metal but, the serious problem may be generated in micro cutting fields by the cryogenic environment. However, if the proper low temperature is applied to micro cutting area, the cooling effect of cutting heat is expected. Such effect can make the reduction of tool wear and burr formation. For verifying this passibility, the micro cutting experiment at low temperature was performed and SEM images were analyzed. Third, the micro pattern was deformed by the cutting forces and the shape error occurred in the sidewall multi-step cutting process were minimized. As the results, the relationship between the cutting conditions and the deformation of micro-structure during micro cutting process was investigated.

Study on the Pressure Measurement at Parting Surface to Prevent Flashing in Injection Molds (사출금형 버 발생 방지를 위한 형합면압 측정에 관한 연구)

  • The flashing reduces the part quality and the productivity of the molding process. We developed a contact pressure sensor to detect the flashing immediately. The performance of the sensor was analyzed in a simple 2D simulation. The sensor was applied to an automotive bumper mold with cavity pressure sensors. It showed sensitive output signal for the mold response by the cavity pressure change. It was confirmed that the flashing at the gate area occurred in the filling stage by the pressure increase due to growth of the melt flow length. The sensor output was correlated with the cavity pressure sensor output.

Rapidly Calcified Epidural Hematoma in a Neonate

  • We report a very rare case of a rapidly calcified chronic epidural hematoma (EDH) in a neonate. A 26-day-old female infant was referred to us from a regional hospital because of drowsy mentality and a seizure attack. She was delivered through caesarian section because normal spontaneous vaginal delivery was prolonged and failed. At birth, mild scalp swelling was found on the right frontal area. Scalp swelling was spontaneously resolved and she was discharged without any problems. On the 25th day after her birth, the baby presented with drowsiness and hypotonia following a generalized tonic-clonic seizure. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a chronic EDH that had a thick layer of calcification. A small burr-hole trephination was performed and a single silastic drainage catheter was inserted. After the operation, a total of 12 ml of liquefied hematoma was drained, and the patient's mentality improved from drowsiness to alertness. The patient was asymptomatic when discharged.

Endoscopic Management of Cranial Arachnoid Cysts Using Extra-Channel Method

  • Objective : Arachnoid cysts (ACs) can be cured by making the definite and wide communication between the cyst and arachnoid space using endoscopy, but often it is impossible only through the usual working-channel (intra-channel) procedures. We discuss and propose a more valuable endoscopic technique with the presentation of our series of cases. Methods : We treated 9 patients with cortical AC in various locations with extra-channel endoscopic techniques. The patients ranged in age from 3 years to 60 years (mean age, 37.2 yrs). The follow-up period ranged from 12 to 26 months (mean follow-up duration, 17.2 months). All patients had large AC compressing the adjacent brain with clinical symptoms or signs. The authors performed extensive fenestration via single burr hole with the aid of endoscope. Being bypassed the rigid endoscope, through the space between the shaft of endoscope and guiding cannula (extra-channel method), fenestration procedures were done in the dry fields. Results : Eight (88.9%) patients had been treated successfully with endoscope. One patient required shunt procedure. Among the eight patients who were treated with endoscopic procedure, 6 patients (66.7%) showed cyst reduction, and two (22.2%) showed disappearance of cyst. Conclusion : We suggest that extra-channel method will be simple and easy to perform using more valuable instruments with wider working area, and may promise better results compared to the conventional intra-channel endoscopic procedures.

Deburring Technology Using Ultrasonic Cavitation (초음파 케비테이션을 이용한 디버링 기술)

  • Surface and edge finishing processes are important technological operations of in parts machining. Quality of the finished parts directly affect the performance of the whole product. Especially, edge quality, which depends on burr control, is extremely important. Burrs are undesirable projections of the material beyond the edge of the workpiece. A number of deburring processes have been developed such as barreling, brushing, chemical methods etc. But, there are only few publications in the area of applying ultrasonics to deburring. When ultrasonic vibration propagates in the liquid medium, a large number of bubbles are formed. These bubbles generate an extremely strong force, which can be used to remove burrs. Cavitation is used as a term to describe the erosion of parts caused by the action of cavities in liquid. The object of this study is to analyze the effects of ultrasonic cavitation in the deburring process. For this purpose, we introduce a new ultrasonic cavitation method, which efficiently removes the burrs. Experimental parameters to verify the deburring effects of ultrasonic cavitations are ultrasonic power, amplitude, distant of the transducer from the workpiece, deburring time and abrasive. It has been shown that deburring with ultrasonic cavitation in water is effective to burrs.

Structural Design of a Li-Ion Battery Slitting Machine for the Improved Stability (리튬이온 전지용 슬리터의 구조안정화 설계)

  • Slitting, which is supposed to be one of the most critical processes in Li-Ion battery manufacturing, is supposed to cut off the uncoated parts of the foil, and cut the wide foils into the size of the Li-ion batteries. Vibrations of slitting machines are the most critical factors for uneven cut surface such as surface roughness and burr, which are the main reasons of the tearing of microporous membranes to separate the cathodes and the anodes, and eventually causing explosion of the batteries. In this study, the structure of a slitting machine has been analyzed through computer simulations to figure out the main reasons of the vibrations. The result of the study shows that simple design alterations of the supporting area and roller without modifying the main structure of the machine can suppress the vibrations effectively, and further to prevent the devastating explosion.

Evaluation on Effectiveness for Preventing Post Surgical Adhesion of Sodium Hyaluronate/Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (HA/CMC) Membrane in Rat Cecum/Peritonium Model (쥐 맹장/복벽 찰과상 모델에서 Sodium Hyaluronate/sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose 멤브레인의 수술 후 유착방지에 대한 유효성 평가)

  • We prepared an anti-adhesion membrane made of sodium hyaluronate/sodium carboxymethylcellulose (HA/CMC) and evaluated its effectiveness for adhesion prevention in a rat model. The anti-adhesion membrane was prepared by lyophilizing HA/CMC solution and cross-linking properly with 1-Ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDAC). In a cecum/abdominal wall abrasion model of Sprague-Dawley rat, cecal serosa and abdominal wall were abraded in $1\times2\;(cm^2)$ with a bone burr after peritoneal midline incision and sutured at 3 points around the injured surface. The denuded cecum was covered with HA/CMC membrane (experimental group), or nothing (control group) and apposed to the abdominal wall. Most of the control group represented 3 or more of adhesion grade at POD 7, 14, 21, and 28, whereas $60\~70\%$ of the experimental group was 2 or less of adhesion grade at 14, 21, and 28. It was similar in the adhesion strength. In a general manner, the adhesion grade and strength showed gradual increasing until POD 14, almost same or a little increasing POD 21, but decreasing POD 28. Also the control group was much higher in adhesion grade, strength, and area than the experimental group. It is expected that the anti-adhesion membrane will have a good clinical result in postoperative adhesion prevention.

Exploratory Arthroscopic Treatment to Diagnose and Treat Osteochondritis Dissecans of the Shoulder Joint in a Dog (개의 어깨 관절에서 박리성 골연골염의 진단과 치료를 위한 탐색적 관절내시경의 적용)

  • A 6-month-old, intact male Great Pyrenees (35 kg) was referred with 2 weeks continuous left forelimb lameness to the Chonbuk Animal Medical Center, College of Veterinary medicine, Chonbuk National University. The lameness became worse three days before being referred to the hospital. Upon the physical examination, the patient had pain when the left shoulder joint was palpated, and the lameness was visible in the left forelimb during ambulation on gait examination. There were no remarkable findings on radiological and neurological examination. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) was suspected based on medical history and gait tests. As a definitive diagnosis could not be made, exploratory arthroscopic surgery was performed to examine the inside of the shoulder joint. During the operation, mild bicipital tenosynovitis, synovitis and OCD which was located on the caudal medial area of humeral head were revealed. Arthroscopic procedures were used for the treating OCD, including the removal of the OCD flap and debriding of the subchondral defect until hemorrhaging by use of an electrical burr. The patient was discharged a day after surgery. After 2 weeks, the patient again presented at the hospital due to complications, including inflammation of the surgical lesion because of licking and seroma within the subcutaneous tissue. Antibiotics were administered and an aseptic bandage was applied. And simple surgical operations were performed for the removal of the cyst and seroma. Eleven weeks following arthroscopy, the lameness was completely resolved. Arthroscopy has the advantage of allowing gross examination inside the joint capsule. Due to this advantage, arthroscopy is one of the best advanced options for diagnosis in dogs with undiagnosed joint pain.
