Discriminant analysis using near infrared spectra derived from Korean Flue-cured(KF) and American Flue-cured(AF), and also Korean Burley(KB) and American Burley(AB) tobacco was done to classify flue-cured and burley tobacco as either grown in Korea or grown in the USA. Samples were scanned in the wavelength of 400 ~ 2500 nm by near infrared analyzer(NIRSystem Co., model 6500). The discrimination equations for flue-cured and burley tobacco were developed using partial least square 2 method in Infrasoft International NIRS 3 software package. KF samples used for the development of the discrimination equations were higher contents of total sugar, crude ash and chlorine, and higher value of leaf density and brightness, but lower contents of nicotine, total nitrogen and ether extracts, and higher value of redness than those of AF samples. KB samples were higher contents of nicotine, crude ash and chlorine, but lower contents of ether extracts and value of brightness than those of AB samples. On 3 dimensional graph drawn with 3 principal component scores calculated with 3 principal component from KF and KB sample spectra, KF sample spectra were significantly different from AF, and also KB sample spectra were significantly different from AB. The discrimination equations of flue-cured and burley were developed with 3 principal component, respectively. The discrimination equations for flue-cured and burley had a standard error of 0.03 and 0.04, and a R2 of 0.88 and 0.84, respectively. The tobacco samples used for the development of discrimination equation were perfectly classified as KF and AF by flue-cured discrimination equation, and also perfectly classified KB and AB by burley discrimination equation, respectively. The correct classification rates of KF and AF samples not used for the development of discrimination equations were 9S % (828 out of 869 samples) and 98 % (98 out of 100 samples) by flue-cured discrimination equations, and KB and AB samples were 94%(345 out of 368 samples) and 100%(42 out of 42 samples) by burley discrimination equations, respectively.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of forced fermentation on chemical and sensory properties in burley leaf tobacco. Three process steps of burley leaf tobacco(green and redried leaves produced in 2000, and aged leaves in 1998) and four grades(BlT, B2T, C1W and C2W) of leaf for every step were used in this study. The leaves were moistened by 22% moisture content, packed under 200kg/㎥ condition and stored in chamber controlled 6$0^{\circ}C$ and 90% R.H. for 7 days. Nicotine contents in three steps of burley leaf tobacco were significantly decreased by forced fermentation. Except for aged leaf, pH values of green and redried leaves were significantly lowered. Nicotine, tar and CO contents of cigarette smoke showed little difference between cigarettes containing 23%, 26% and 29% of fermented burley leaf and controlled cigarette(containing 19% of aged burley leaf). The cigarette containing 26% of the redried and fermented leaf was significantly better taste and less irritation than controlled cigarette. The results suggest that the forced fermentation may be useful to increase the rate of burley tobacco in leaf blending and to shorten the period of storage for aging.
The grades of burley tobacco stems and scraps were classified followed by the nicotine and nitrate contents by using the cluster analysis. The chemical components of the burley tobacco stems and scraps gathered from 2002 to 2005 were analyzed with auto analyzer. According to the nicotine contents and the nitrate contents, the burley stems and scraps could be classified three groups, respectively. In case of the burley scraps, the AB3T, AB4TR, B1T and B2T grades belonged to the $1^{st}$ a group. The C1W and C2W grades belonged to the $2^{nd}$ group and the CD3W and CD4TR belonged to the $3^{rd}$. In case of the burley stems, the AB3T and AB4TR grades belonged to the $1^{st}$ group. The B1T, B2T, C1W and C2W grades belonged to the $2^{nd}$ group and the CD3W and CD4TR belonged to the $3^{rd}$ group. This classification of raw materials depending on the similarity in the chemical components might be helpful to control the properties of the Reconstituted Tobacco sheet.
This study was conducted to determine the smoke component concentration and the smoke distribution in the cambridge filter pad and cigarette filter with stalk position and grade of Korean leaf tobaccos. 12 grades of flue-cured and burley leaf tobaccos which were taken from the Kim-cheon and Ock-cheon leaf tobacco processing factory were used for this study. Six kinds of smoke components such as tar, nicotine, water, carbon monoxide(CO), carbon dioxide($CO_2$) puff No. collected in the cambridge filter pad and cigarette filter were analyzed. Also, nicotine/tar, CO/tar ratio were calculated from the analytical data. Puff no., CO, and $CO_2$ concentration of flue-cured and burley tobacco leaves at high stalk position were higher than those of low stalk position, and these components were increased in high grade of leaf tobacco. Compared with flue-cured tobacco, burley tobacco showed a little values of puff no., nicotine, and tar concentration. The pH range of burley tobaccos was broader than that of flue-cured tobaccos, and the ammonia concentration of burley tobaccos was significantly higher than that of flue-cured tobaccos. The pH value and ammonia concentration of burley tobaccos were decreased as stalk position of leaf tobaccos decreased. The distribution of smoke components collected in the cambridge filter pad and cigarette filter was different with a different grade and stalk position of tobacco leaves. In high stalk position of tobacco leaves, the portion of smoke components collected in the cambridge filter pad was also increased. The average nicotine, water, and tar removal efficiency by a cigarette filter in a flue-cured tobacco were 37%, 64%, and 48%, respectively. Compared with flue-cured tobaccos, smoke components of burley tobaccos had high nicotine and low water removal efficiency by a cigarette filter. The average ratio of nicotine/tar and CO/tar of flue-cured tobaccos and burley tobaccos were 0.097, 1.22, 0.094, and 0.97, in order. Nicotine/tar ratio was decreased and CO/tar ratio was increased in low stalk position.
This experiment was tarried out to investigate the effect of plant spacing and amount of side dressing on the yield, quality and protein pattern in burley 21 and KB 101. The results obtained were summarized as follow. 1 Yield and alkaloid content are increased In high plant population and side dressing. 2 . Quality is not affected by plant population and side dressing. 3 . Nitrogen content is decreased by late growing stage. 4. The bands of burley 21 seed are fewer than KB 101 seed bands in protein pattern. 5. In protein pattern, the bands of KB 101s leave are thicker than that of burley21s leave between 18,000∼14,000 of molecular weight.
The quality of burley leaf tobacco was affected by various toasting conditions. In this study, we determined main factor to influence the quality of burley tobacco on toasting and established proper toasting condition to improve the quality of toasted tobacco. Our results indicated that the main factor to influence the quality of burley tobacco was the amount of treatment and 3rd drying zone temperature. We also found that the proper toasting conditions to improve the quality of toasted tobacco and reduce the smoking irritation were moisture content (34 %), amount of treatment (1,520kg/hr), 1st drying zone temperature (135$^{\circ}C$), 2nd zone drying temperature(145$^{\circ}C$) and 3rd zone drying temperature (147$^{\circ}C$).
This experiment was carried out to select the suitable burley varieties for paddy field. Two varieties, two $F_1$ hybrids and three $F_1$ hybrids with pale yellow line which were all early maturing were tested in the paddy field condition. The results were as follows. 1. Va 528 and all $F_1$ hybrids flowered 4-8 days earlier than Burley 21. 2. Leaf maturity among varieties and $F_1$ hybrids were not significantly different at first priming, but significant differences were detected from second to forth primings. (MS Ky 12x JB 7802-30)Fl and (MS Br 21 x L8)$F_1$ hybrids matured 3-5 days earlier than Burley 21. Pale yellow hyorids matured early, yielded high and were favorable in physical properties, but were low in quality. 4. Va 528 and (MS Br 21 x L8) $F_1$ hybrid showed earthy maturing, high yield and good quality compared with Burley 21. So two varieties were considered suitable for paddy field cultivation.
The optimal condition was investigated to make for good quality of Burley tobacco during the toasting. A complete factorial design (3$\times$3) and rotatable central composite design were used in this study. Based on the results obtained, it would be possible that 1) methyl-pyrazine other than pyrazine compounds is assumed to play an important role in the improvement of smoke taste. 2) filling value of Burley 21 leaf can be increased by 5~10 % 3) fragility index can be increased by about 5%. 4) total volatile base can also be reduced by about 10% and 5) the aroma and favorable taste of the Burley tobacco can be Improved by toe optimization the amount of sugar added and the toasting time and temperature.
Volatile aroma components, non-volatile organic acids in lamina and stems of flue-cured(NC 2326) and burley ( Burley 21) were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, respectively. Then compositional differences of these components between lamina and stems were discussed. The contents of volatile components were higher in flue-cured than in burley tobacco, and it was also higher in lamina then in stem. The major aroma components in lamina were neophytadiene , nicotine, solanone and benzyl alcohol but those in stems were palmitic acid, neophytadiene, nicotine, solanone and phenyl ethyl acetate. On the other hand, the contents of non-volatile organic acids were higher in burley than in flue-cured tobacco, and these values of burley tobacco were higher in lamina than in stem but flue-cured tobacco were higher in stem than in lamina. The major acids in all the above four tabacco samples were malic, citric, oxalic and linolenic acid.
