  • Ventilation through air vent system in a building envelope is expected to be an effective measure to release solar radiation. An external surface of a wall absorbs solar radiation and transfers it to the air in the cavity. The warmed air gets buoyant force. So when openings are provided at the top and bottom of the cavity, the warmed air is released through the top opening and cooler outside air replaces the space in the cavity. This reduces the further heat transmission into the built environment. This natural ventilation effect seems to be steady and strong. So because of the cavity and the openings, the cooling load reduction by natural ventilation is believed to be considerable.

  • To study the packaging mechanism of the bacteriophage P2-P4 system which is a useful experimental tool for the study of viral capsid assembly, we analyzed the DNA contents of P4 sid- mutant, P4 ash8 sid71's phage particles. Two kind of particles having different density were separated by the CsCl buoyant equilibrium density gradient experiment with fresh made stock of P4 ash8 sid71. The DNA from each particles was prepared and its conformations was analyzed by electrophoresis. Unexpectedly, both particles contain not only dimeric and trimeric but also monomeric P4 DNA.

  • Recently, artificial rocks, instead of buoys, have been placed on the submerged breakwater to indicate its location. The accurate estimation of wave forces on these rocks is deemed necessary for their stability design. Characteristics of the wave force, however, are expected . to be very complicated because of the occurrence of breaking or post-breaking waves. In this regard, wave forces exerted on an artificial rock have been investigated in this paper. The maximum wave force has been found to strongly dependent on the location and shape of the artificial rock that is placed on the submerged breakwater. The plunging breaker occurs near the loading cram edge of a submerged breakwater, which cause impulsive breaking wave force on the rock. Using the Morison equation, with the velocity and acceleration at the front face of the artificial rock and varying water surface level, it is possible to estimate wave forces, even impulsive breaking wave forces, that are acting on the rock installed on a submerged breakwater. The vertical wave force is also found to depend, significantly, on the buoyant force.

  • Control of mixing and transport processes are the key areas that can be benefited by understanding the hydrodynamics in gas-liquid two-phase flows. In particular, the enhanced bubble-induced liquid-phase mixing is known to be a function of void fraction distribution, gas phase velocity and so on. To further our insight on the characteristics of the liquid-phase mixing induced by the bubbles, in the present study, we experimentally investigate the mixing performance of a rectangular bubble column while changing the void fraction from 0.006 to 0.075%. A shadowgraphy technique is used to measure the gas-phase properties such as void fraction and size/velocity of bubbles. On the other hand, we use dye visualization with low diffusive buoyant dye to directly measure the level of mixing. Finally, we confirm that the time taken for full mixing scales with the inverse of volume void fraction.

  • This study has been performed on multiple steady-state natural convection in the upflow region induced by an inclined isothermal plate immersed in pure cold water. The newly found additional steady-state solutions are of considerable practical interest because the heat-transfer rates for a pair of solutions with determining physical parameters and boundary conditions otherwise identical are sometimes vastly different. The results are as follows: First, in the largely upflow region, two solutions exist for 0.15157

  • The various electromagnetic based actuation(EMA) methods have been proposed for actuating microrobot. The advantage of EMA is that it can provide wireless driving to microrobot. In this reason a lot of researchers have been focusing on the EMA driven microrobot. This paper proposed a swimming microrobot driven by external alternating magnet field which is generated by two pairs of Helmholtz coils. The microrobot has a fish-like shape and consists of a buoyant robot body, a permanent magnet, and a fin. The fin is directly linked to the permanent magnet and the magnet is swung by the alternating magnet field, which makes the propulsion and steering power of the robot. In this paper, firstly, we designed the locomotive mechanism of the microrobot boy EMA. Secondly, we set up the control system. Finally, we demonstrated the swimming robot and evaluated the performance of the microrobot by the experiments.

  • In this paper the results of CFD simulations, that were carried out to study the impact pressures acting on a symmetric wedge during water entry under the influence of gravity, are presented. The simulations were done using a solver implementing finite volume discretization and using the VOF scheme to keep track of the free surface during water entry. The parameters such as pressure on impact, displacement, velocity, acceleration and net hydrodynamic forces, etc., which govern the water entry process are monitored during the initial stage of water entry. In addition, the results of the complete water entry process of wedges covering the initial stage where the impact pressure reaches its maximum as well as the late stage that covers the rebound process of the buoyant wedge are presented. The study was conducted for a few touchdown velocities to understand its influence on the water entry phenomenon. The simulation results are compared with the experimental measurements available in the literature with good accuracy. The various computational parameters (e.g., mesh size, time step, solver, etc.) that are necessary for accurate prediction of impact pressures, as well as the entry-exit trajectory, are discussed.

  • Four strains of fowl adenovirus (FAdV) were isolated from 4 flocks of broiler or layer chickens affected by hydropericardium syndrome in Korea. These FAdVs were classified as serotype 4 by restriction fragment length polymorphism patterns of hexon genes and whole genomes. The virus exhibited cytopathic effects consisting of rounding, ballooning and clustering in primary chicken embryo liver cell cultures. In transmission electron microscopy, virus particles in hexagonal shape aggregated exclusively in the nuclei of hepatocytes of the chickens as the typical appearances in adenovirus infections. Buoyant density of the virus in cesium chloride (CsCl) was 1.34 g/mL. The virus was stable to chloroform, ether, 50~70% ethanol, acidic condition at pH 3, 0.25% trypsin (1 : 250), heat at $50^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, but labile to 100% ethanol, heat at $52{\sim}60^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, 1 M $MgCl_2$ at $50^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, 1 : 2,000 formalin (37%). All of the physicochemical properties pertained to the characteristics of adenoviruses. Eight viral polypeptides were determined in CsCl-purified virus by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.

  • This paper aims to discuss the concept of resilience in floating housing, to investigate the resilient features of floating houses & to review the possibility of floating housing as a new form of resilient living, and to suggest some reference ideas for the planning and design of floating housing projects. Resilient features of the floating house can be summarized as the buoyant characteristics for natural disasters, the easy employment & potential use of renewable and nearly self-sufficient energy systems in locations subject to limited energy sources, the movability, mobility, long life, water recycle system, prefabrication and modular construction with the potential for reduced environmental impact. Additional benefits include the potential for a peaceful and comfortable atmosphere due to direct connections with nature, good relationship with neighbors, a solid social spirit of unity, and sense of security. Considering the resilient features of floating house at a time of serious climate change requires a new paradigm, and floating/amphibious/floatable housing has great possibility as a new form of resilient living.
