  • This study was performed to examine the effects of chaff as a bulking material on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction and salinity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to chaff in reactor of Control, Ch-1. Ch-2, Ch-3 and Ch-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4. respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wasted to chaff resulted in the reaction at higher reaction temperature and the elongation of the high temperature reaction period. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more faster pH increase. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff resulted in the more faster reduction in the weight and the volume of wastes. Salinities were condensed by reaction days. The final salinity of Control and the final range of salinities of chaff mixtures were 2.79%, and 2.18~2.37%. respectively.

  • The objective of this study is to examine the effect of the waste oyster shell powder as the addition agent in bulking sludge thickening of paper manufacturing plant using DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) and gravitational sedimentation. The effect of parameters such as dosage and size distribution of oyster shell were examined. The results showed that the optimum dosage of mixed oyster shell(size range : $\sim250{\mu}m$) was 0.8 g/L. The oyster shell addition of 5.0 g/L in sedimentation process was increased thickening concentration of 3.25 times. When 5.0 g/L of oyster shell was added in DAF process, water content of sludge was decreased from 95.5% to 82.7% in dewatering process using Buchner funnel test device. When size of oyster shell was divided four ranges($\sim53{\mu}m$, $53\sim106{\mu}m$, $106\sim150{\mu}m$, $150\sim250{\mu}m$), optimum size range for the flotation and dewatering was $53\sim106{\mu}m$.

  • The kernel of wastewater treatment by activated sludge is elimination of organic substances and maintenance of well-flocculated sludge sedimentation. By the conventional activated sludge treatment, the optimum F/M ratio of soybean wastewater treatment was 0.24 (kg-BOD/kg-MLVSS day) and sludge bulking was generated at 0.48 (kg-BOD/kg-MLVSS day). To improve the treatment capacity and operation quality in higher loading of soybean wastewater, influent pH was constantly controlled by 9.0 using NaOH as a coagulant agent. In this process, higher loading up to 2.88 (kg-BOD/kg-MLVSS day) was possible and SVI was maintained under 150 without bulking. This was equivalent to 7.2 times higher than maximum permissible load of the conventional activated sludge process.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effects of input ratios of bulking material in aerobic composting of food wastes on variation of colony forming units of heterotrophic bacteria. Wood chips were used as a bulking material. Volume ratios of food wastes to wood chips in reactor of Control, WC-1 and WC-2 were 10/0, 10/5 and 10/10, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1hour stirring by 1rpm and 2 hours of the forced aeration per day. WC-2 reached high temperature range faster than WC-1, and the maximum temperature of WC-2 was higher than that of WC-1. This means that the reaction velocity of composting of WC-2 was faster than that of WC-1. Judging from the profile of pH changes, composting of WC-1 proceeded slowly and continuously. Composting of WC-2 proceeded rapidly in the former half reaction period, and kept steady state of high pH in the latter half reaction period. Namely, composting of WC-2 was nearly completed in the former half reaction period. In the case of WC-1 and WC-2. the maximum temperature was followed by the rapid pH increase in 2-3 days, and this was followed by the maximum Colony Forming Units(CFU) in 3 days. But, these three items of WC-2 always appeared faster and higher than those of WC-1.

  • The study was executed to evaluate the agricultural utilization of phyllite as composting bulking agent in pig manure. The effects of the composted pig manure were verified by adopting the mixture of 10% phyllite and 20% saw dust(PSPC 10) and 20% phyllite and 10% saw dust(PSPC 20). The pig manure mixed with 30% saw dust was used as a control(PSC). However C/N ratio was very decreased because humus was rapidly progressed at PSPC 20 plot during the composting. Also, $NH_4{^+}-N$, $NO_3{^-}-N$, pH and EC were quickly changed from after one week and CEC was the highest as $92cmol_c/kg$. And Total-N was hardly changed during the composting but total carbon was rapidly declined as processing compost. Therefore, the phyllite has positively showed comparing with others in the street as compost bulking agent and go ahead, it is concerned that this material should have to research and investigating, constantly.

  • Three typical biological solid wastes, namely, animal manure, garbage, and sewage sludge, were compared with regard to the composting process and the changes in microbial community structure. The effects of different bulking agents such as rice straw, vermiculite, sawdust, and waste paper were compared in manure compost. The differences in the microbial community were characterized by the quinone profile method. The highest mass reduction was found in garbage composting (56.8%), compared with manure and sludge (25% and 20.2%, respectively). A quinone content of $305.2\;{\mu}mol/kg$ was observed in the late stage of garbage composting, although the diversity index of the quinone profile was 9.7, lower than that in manure composting. The predominant quinone species was found to be MK-7, which corresponds to Gram-positive bacteria with a low G+C content, such as Bacillus. The predominance of MK-7 was especially found in the garbage and sludge composting process, and the increase in quinones with partially saturated long side-chains was shown in the late composting process of manure, which corresponded to the proliferation of Actinobacteria. The effects of different bulking agents on the composting process was much smaller than the effects of different raw materials. High organic matter content in the raw materials resulted in a higher microbial biomass and activity, which was connected to the high mass reduction rate.

  • A series of experiments were performed to study the influence of the following parameters on the physical traits and composition of swine manure compost: (1) addition of magnesium (Mg) at a molar ratio of 1.2 with respect to $PO_4$, and (2) reutilization of compost containing $MgNH_4PO_4{\cdot}6H_2O$ (magnesium ammonium phosphate, MAP). Three independent batch tests were conducted for replication: batch test I-control (C) and Mg added (T), batch test II-C, T and compost recycle ($T_{R1}$), and batch test III-C, T and compost recycle ($T_{R2}$). Magnesium addition and compost reutilization had no adverse effect on the degradation of organic matter. Reuse of the compost, however, had a clear effect on the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) contents in the final compost. Repeated compost reutilization as a bulking material was resulted in composts rich in N and P. Upon adding the Mg supplement to the composting materials, the ortho-phosphate (OP) to TP ratio decreased due to the MAP crystallization reaction. The decrease in the OP/TP ratio and the increase in the TP content of the compost indicate that water-soluble phosphate is converted into a slow-release phosphate by the formation of crystals during composting. X-ray diffraction analysis of the irregular shaped crystals in the compost indicated that they are MAP crystals and that the crystallization of MAP begins immediately after the addition of the Mg supplement. The Mg addition to composting materials and the reutilization of compost as a bulking material would be a practical means to conserve nutrient content.

  • It is not long since treatment of food waste became a social problem. However, it is a fact that there have been a lot of debates on the treatment of food waste since several years ago. At present, two ways of disposing food waste are under great interest in Korea and Japan. One is drying of food waste at high temperature. The other is disappearance type, in which analysis by microorganism takes place with continuous supply of a bulking agent for a certain period of time that was stored in a reactor. In our laboratory, Disappearance type Food Waste Disposer is under interest, and experiments regarding condition establishment for efficient analysis of food waste were conducted. As preceding experimentation, experiments were done with regard to the selection of a substance to be used as a bulking agent, improvement by addition of a substance which maximizes initial growth of microorganism, and a concentration change in rank odors generated by reaction with deodorizer (absorbent). The results turned out to be satisfactory.
